Sean saying “He’s the guy that said let them eat cake” referring to Winston Churchill, followed by him looking it up and finding out it was actually Marie Antoinette, absolutely sent me😂
she never said that, she was framed by the establishment around her as the fall guy for their fuck awful policies & then she was forever remembered as a heartless airhead
I’m glad this is an ADHD friendly podcast because my brain functions just like theirs, when they go through so many different topics so quickly is when my brain retains the most info
Famously so. On the front lines, his fellow soldiers had run out of bullets. All they had were the cakes they rationed for their journey. When the men asked what they hit their enemies with, Churchill cried “LET THEM EAT CAKE!” and so they pelted their enemies with beautifully decorated confectioneries for weeks. Eventually the enemies got so annoyed they stormed away, awarding them victory.
Sean was not thinking of the context of ANYTHING in the whole podcast, if he stopped for a moment to think of words or context he would have understood 3000% more of what he spoke about
32:53 - the idea is that people will never be forced to feed and house soldiers, and it's because during the revolution they were forced to feed and house british soldiers, and they really didn't like that so they made sure they'd never have to do that for themselves. kinda outdated but welcome to the law. edit: being a history buff and listening to non-history people can cause serious internal pain, be cautious.

He was joking but that’s a real thing here in the US, you can be arrested for feeding homeless people sadly (some cities have ordinances that make it an arrestable offense). So you could in fact get away with feeding homeless people
In Texas, there’s a group called Food Not Bombs that distributes food to ppl that need it and their volunteers are often armed to deter a police response, they also receive fines upon fines for giving food to more than 5 people on public property. I love America ❤🇺🇸 ❤

I know there were literally 365 episodes of Unus Annus, so it's a lot to keep track of in the ADHD brain. (Which I relate to, HARD.) But it blows my mind how many things Ethan did on Unus Annus that he talks about on Brain Leak like he's never done it before. (For those who don't recall or know, Mark took Ethan through the US Citizenship practice test in one episode. I believe he got like a 60% or 70% or so?)
Yeah I think it's just really easy too forget those things. Especially since it's been a few years ago now. I didn't really remember to be honest, but reading your comment now, it does sound really familiar.
It kills me to imagine that while the Nazis were bombing the Brit’s during the blitz that Churchill would on the national broadcast system and go “and let them eat cake” good god you boys this episode was wild
The "let them eat cake" bit was infinitely funny as it is two modern day "royals" not understanding that Marie Antoinette was so oblivious to the ordinary man that she didn't understand why they didn't eat cake when they ran out of bread.
The under god part wasn't even added to the pledge until 1954 and mostly for political reasons. Yet people will froth at the mouth and swear it's what our forefathers wanted.

Talking about nuclear stuff, Kyle Hill has an ongoing series (Half-life History) on his channel that covers the history of nuclear energy, including Chernobyl, the bombs used on Japan, and the Demon Core. He also visited Chernobyl shortly before Russia invaded Ukraine, and his documentary series from that is pretty great.

I actually work at Music & Arts (now owned by Guitar Center), as an instructor. Y'all should go out there and they'll be more than happy to let you fiddle with the instruments!
Hearing Sean saying the tested bombs killed a lot of animals reminded me that’s how the concept of Godzilla was born. It’s a monster resulting from radiation exposure. I’m actually amazed nothing like that has happened or even cases of radiation fish being eaten and then mutating the consumers. Edited just to add that my weird food combo is Parmesan and semi sweet chocolate. I got the craving while pregnant, it’s been 4 years since and I still love it.
It was nice having a different segment on this one. It felt very refreshing. Perhaps having multiple segements for different episodes could be fun. Things like confessions or stuff in that sorta area. either way, love the podcast, stay leaky
Similarly to Ethan's "Wish I could say more to Grandma" when my grandmother was passing, everyone said she would be ok, so when I had to leave, I said "See you later" instead of "I love you" and it still hurts.
the last time i saw my nan before she died i had chicken pox and my parents refused to let me hug her goodbye one last time, i wasnt allowed to touch her or even go near her, i understand how bad it hurts and she knows you wouldve said more, she loves you. if you wanna talk about anything you can talk to me, even though im just a stranger on the internet im here for you.
Y'know I did a lot of history in high school and beginning of college, so I'm not representative of the average person, but man people don't seem to know history at all. Lol. Doesn't matter though if its sean and ethan. They're all good.
By far the best episode imo. Educational, funny and no bad advice. Haven’t really cared for that final segment. Love the question segment in this episode though!
I like that as a requirement. We have too many people in this country who are allowed to vote with like no more knowledge of the constitution than the first and second amendments.
I’m glad I got to start this episode within the hour of it getting posted. It’s the first time I have for their podcast!!! But… it released at 2 am my time😅😅😅
Thank you leaky bois for this podcast. I deal with a lot of heavy subject matter at my job and I also have to concentrate a ton but it's so nice to listen to goofy tangents to unwind. Helps me a ton. Stay leaky
i'm staying up late for my summer Government and Citizenship class homework, and i check my youtube feed, and, Sean? this is too relatable. i took that test yesterday.
As a person who’s worked from home for years, I can say with conviction I don’t wanna go back to an office. The big takeaway here tho is Seán thinking Winston Churchill said “let them eat cake”, bless him. I was laughing way too hard… ❤😂
33:15 the 3rd amendment is rather strange until you look at early US history. Before independence, English soldiers could live in a citizen’s house without consent of the owner, and without paying for rent or food they took. This is why the 3rd amendment is rather important to the early American government, but is more common sense now.
not me getting extremely excited hearing Sean talk about wanting to do MY job, sound design has always been my passion and, while it's not necessarily a 9-to-5, it's so fulfilling. I love hearing people share those passions!!
I actually had an idea to do something similar with my grandma. Except it was to record her reading a book I loved her to read to me when I was little. So I can play it for my kids if I have them someday. But I do like the idea of just asking about her life. Especially with the difference in technology and the things they did before the internet and TV. I don't like to think about the fact that she'll be gone someday but it would be nice to have something to see and hear her once she's gone. Hopefully she'll still be around a while. She'll just be 70 in December and most of her family lived to 90s
First Google result, provided by Wikipedia : “Let them eat cake” - Although the phrase is conventionally attributed to Marie Antoinette, it can actually be traced back to Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Confessions in 1765, 24 years prior to the French Revolution, and when Antoinette was 9 years old and had never been to France.
Context for let them eat cake: French peasants were starving, begging the nobles for food. She basically said (paraphrased) "if they don't have bread, then let them eat cake". Source: Idk bro, I just recoiled when Sean said it was Churchill and my brain just spat out her, and why she said it. Probably some history class or something. Edit: unpaused the video again and Ethan basically says it too. I really should wait before commenting.
When I was in school most teachers didn't care if I or others didn't say the pledge of allegiance. Some did, I remember I was scolded because I was walking in the hallway while someone said it over the announcements and I didn't stop to listen or say it. Then there was the Collin Kaepernick controversy, where a tonne of minority students like myself stopped, and with 2020 events there were even fewer patriotic types to say and stand for it, which is really saying something since I lived in a Republican state at the time. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the current political climate has kept people from saying it. I wouldn't be surprised if some places just did away with it entirely at any point.
"let them eat cake" wasn't a merciful phrase where French royalty was sharing resources, it was an alleged complete dismissal of the plight of those in need by just suggesting they simply purchase something different to eat (that they obviously didn't have money for).
It's especially horrifying to look up all the "broken arrow" incidents that have happened with nukes. I'm from North Carolina and it's kind of a running joke about how the US accidentally almost nuked us...twice lol. I think there may still be a bomb missing off the south east coast of the US.
The reason the constitution and bill of rights has such weird and specific situations is because that’s what the British were doing to them at that time. They were forcing citizens to house soldiers and they were basically acting as watch dogs and/or doing inappropriate/rude stuff while housed.
Ethan and Sean being so supportive of what each other wanted to change about the past and then immediately moving into McDonald's is the epitome of this channel
1:08:14 I thought he was gonna say "You can't keep just saying Unus Annus videos and expect us to do it" because he literally just mentioned something they did there
I always wondered how you practiced for a citizenship test. You'd probably have to learn stuff most natural born citizens don't even have to think about.
My Dad just took his citizenship test, and iirc they pretty much have to give you the test questions as the practice test so you can learn the answers. My family would frequently just sit in the living room and quiz him/each other. And yeah, I can confirm that I probably did way better on that test than most other born-Americans would. It's a lot of stuff about the constitution and I think it's painfully obvious that most of us do NOT know nearly enough about the Constitution when it literally is "the Supreme Law of the Land" and governs our entire country.
On the subject of Oppenheimer and stuff. I grew up not too far from where they tested the first ones made in New Mexico. They still have a testing range there called White Sands.
I recommend the channel Geography Now if you want to know more about your country/another countries. They do videos on them that include the meaning of the flag, history of the country, geography, etc. Super well done videos!
The 'let them eat cake' quote represents the indifference or the lack of awareness the nobility had about the peasants' situation rather than be like 'oh, then let them have what we eat!', specially because brioche (the cake referred to in the original French) is a cake whose main ingredient is freaking bread jdjdjjdjd
I haven't said the pledge of allegiance since I graduated high-school 4 years ago and hearing it again sent me back SO hard in a bad way like jumpscare vibes fr
When I was in school we would refuse to stand or say “under god” during the pledge, not really to make a statement more just because we couldn’t be bothered, but certain teachers would always try and get us in trouble for it, which in hindsight is wild.
My job became work from home since a flood in our office. I'm 7mths in, and I don't wanna return - I love WFH. UA-cam, however, did get tiring by being in the same room all day, every day, gaming leisurely and for videos just blended, so I started doing less and less of recording.
The hiroshima bombing actually did cause radioactive fallout. That radiation is still there to this day, and the entire district is approximately around (if I remember correctly) 4x more radioactive than Chernobyl. And the reason for that is simple, the radiation will fall down over the course of what I believe is 12 - 48 hours. And once it meets the ground, you need to isolate the radioactive material as fast as possible otherwise it could spread very and I mean VERY quickly. So, even if you did bomb it in the air over land... Due to gravity, the radiation would still meet and interact with the ground at some point.
I mean... the answer to "What is the supreme law of the land" is "the Constitution" in Ireland too, Seán. There are 38 amendments. You probably voted on some of them.
I lost my passport on the way into Ireland and the customs agent quite literally said “you look trustworthy” and let me in 😂

Same here. I'm not into history that much but it pains me to see that even Americans don't know our own history without having to Google everything

The 'let them eat cake' quote represents the indifference or the lack of awareness the nobility had about the peasants' situation rather than be like 'oh, then let them have what we eat!', specially because brioche (the cake referred to in the original French) is a cake whose main ingredient is freaking bread jdjdjjdjd
winston churchill quotes are lovely
Bro I love listening to you guys, you both match each others energy so it’s just so entertaining 😂
I haven't said the pledge of allegiance since I graduated high-school 4 years ago and hearing it again sent me back SO hard in a bad way like jumpscare vibes fr
Dude let them eat cake?? How did jack comfuse churchhill with Marie Antoinette??? 😂🤣
That might be worse than his lack of knowledge about Irish history
She never said it anyway.
When I was in school we would refuse to stand or say “under god” during the pledge, not really to make a statement more just because we couldn’t be bothered, but certain teachers would always try and get us in trouble for it, which in hindsight is wild.
so early theres no thumbnail yet lol
and no sound
and the fullscreen mode is wonky!
1:06:46 to 1:07:08 Was feeling mentally off today, but this part made my day XD
45:13 this is one of the most relatable exchanges they've ever had 😂
Jack not knowing anything about Irish history is painful
and history in general 😂
@@apexinstinct also true but I specified Irish history because, well, I'm Irish believe it or not lol
Not me spitting out my mashed potatoes as I'm caught off guard when Sean said "Ooh, do I enjoy a weird food combo? Peanutbutter on feet?" 😂😂
Last podcast on the left Manhattan project series. So good.

I mean... the answer to "What is the supreme law of the land" is "the Constitution" in Ireland too, Seán. There are 38 amendments. You probably voted on some of them.
