Installing Side Bunk Panel Windows On A Mercedes Sprinter Van - Van Life Build Series Ep 4
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- The fourth episode of our van build/conversion is all about our bunk windows! We chose to install bunk panel windows for two reasons. One, plenty of ventilation when we are sleeping to help us stay cool at night and two, additional light the windows let in allowing the space to feel bigger.
Here’s the step by step process to installing back bunk panel windows to your sprinter van.

So you laid the butyl tape onto that "foam" section? Also. Thank you for your videos! I have watched a ton, and y'all are great at mapping things out. I feel ready to tackle this now!
Caroline Dianne thank you! And that’s correct but looking back I don’t think you need the butyl tape. We just didn’t want to take any risk. If I were to start the van over I probably wouldn’t use the butyl tape and test it out (spray water over it and check for leaks) if I get leaks then I’d apply butyl tape. If you do get it go with black butyl tape!
@@MathersOnTheMap thanks for pointing that out! VWD recommends no other products needed for the CRL clamp ring windows. Best to install bare and do a spray test like you said! 🤙
@@thisspotrules3631 what do you recommand if the window leaks ? I did follow all the good practice and it leaks with foam only....help !!

DYNAFLEX ULTRA 10.1 oz. Black Advanced Exterior Window, Door and Siding Sealant... Had to use on my CRL. So far, so good! 🤞

Thanks for sharing this 👌 greetlings from the Netherlands 👋
2nd time watching this video. Getting ready to install similar windows. I got the bottom swing out windows. Excellent job 👏 on the window install and the video. The 2 of you make a good team.
Always a thumbs up 👍.
Excellent job
Really enjoying the build👍🏽🚐
Appreciate it, George! More episodes to come!
Thanks for the advice! Installing our windows tomorrow .. feeling a lot more confident. Safe travels :)
You got it! Best of luck with the install!
love your videos they are very detailed which is great
Thank you!!
Thanks for this, super helpful today! We put a set on our Promaster today. Tomorrow morning we'll give it the spray test. Being a novice it took some trial and error screwing in the frame. It worked much better starting on the bottom and working towards the split in the top. Hope you're enjoying your van!
Glad the video helped and thanks for watching! Those screws are such a pain!! Our vans still coming along, slow and steady. Best of luck with the water test!
@@MathersOnTheMap Yes it was a two person job for us. Pushing on the frame the first round and then pushing from the outside the second round. That did the trick and they look great (and passed the water test!)
@@andrews57217 glad to hear! best of luck with the rest of your build!
GREAT JOB
Thank you!!
Looks good keep up the good work
Thank you!!!
Good job guys, very helpful, thanks.
Pneumatic Metal Shears are the best tool to cut sheet metal. Precise and no shaving, clean edge. Not too expensive as well
I know I heard they’re great, good for frp bird as well
Great Intro!!!
Next time you install windows use the black take most glass installer use I drive a peterbilt truck and had windshield install the double sided roll of tape looks a rope comes in a roll and won't leak 😊
I’m still scared 😬... to cut the hole ..jk .. but you both did a great job on the instructions and 10/10 on the quality of the presentation editing is perfect thank you Geoff Australia 🇦🇺
Thanks Geoff! Really appreciate it! Best of luck with your cuts!
Hey Guys.. Plz put episode no. In title at start so these vedios come and can be auto played in series. Thanks for shraing these anyway.
Seems you bought the van used. How many miles and what price? Is it awd or fwd?. 4 cylinder right? How did you find a van in Michigan , seems you are based in NJ? I need to get a van first. Appreciate your answers. Thanks.
Bought used $35k 15k miles off cargurus maybe? From the MD dealer. Flew one way ticket to it sight unseen. This was 2019 though before the crazy spike in demand with covid 👌🏻
@@MathersOnTheMap regarding insurance, no issues insuring the van? Who insured yours? Comprehensive?
Great video! Did you guys use any putty?
hey Ben! just butly tape, but i don't know if you really need it
Hello! Love yalls videos. We just installed ours in yesterday and tried the water test today, and had a small leak where the slider is…any recommendations on how to fix this? No other leaks around the outside of the window just the middle part:/ any ideas appreciated!
hey Staci, so the leak is coming through the window itself, not where the perimeter of the window meets the van wall? If so I am not really sure other than playing around with the weathering gasket on the window slider
@@MathersOnTheMap correct! It is from the middle of the window where the slider is. We are trying to decide if maybe some type of sealant could seal off any damaged weathering but wanted to look up options first! Thanks!
why did you cut it from the outside?
Hi. Thanks for the video. I've been following your video and waiting for my window to arrive.ar. I'm just worried when you mentioned (4:49 min) on your video to cut the rib not the skin or it it will cause a serious damage to the van. Do you mean van will be totaled if accidentally cut the skin? Thanks and stay safe. .
Nope! I meant you’d have a big hole! Haha
So you guys used the butyl tape in addition to the existing butyl that came on the window frame. I noticed that in your succession videos you didn't use the butyl(on your other window install). Did you find out something different as you were going along to not use additional butyl?
We called CRL and they said we could use butyl tape for the side panel windows, since we saw that was required for the windows from RB components.
However looking back I think you could get away without it. If I could do it over again, I would still use butyl tape for these windows, but a very thin layer and I’d also ensure it’s a black color. The gray butyl tape sticks out so we spent a good amount of time removing the excess.
For our side door t-vent window, the weather proofing strip is much thicker then the side panels so you definitely do not need butyl tape. Hope this helps!
I am getting ready to install my CRL windows and I am a bit confused. Some people say to use a sealant or butyl tape, others say you need neither. Some people seem to have a lot of difficulty getting the screws in and other people, like you, don't even mention the screws like it was no big deal. What did you do that made it work for you?
Butyl tape isn’t mandatory but I had taylor push on the window from outside while I screwed in on the inside
@@MathersOnTheMap Thanks! It sounds like a certain amount of strength is needed to get the screw in. I am debating pre-drilling or not and working on getting the courage up to tackle this project next!
@@libertybell144 definitely predrill. just installed 2 CRL windows into my sprinter van
@@jackiewah448 Hi Jackie. I completed this project several months ago - and I did predrill. I love my windows! Congratulations on installing yours!
I'm getting ready to order my bunk windows. What size are those? I know they come in different sizes
do you sacrifice the integrity of the metal structure by cutting the ribs and installing a window?
I doubt it the passenger van has windows throughout the entire side
When you add a wall how are you going to finish it with the window already mounted?
Good question, I’m actually working on the furring strips now, something I should have done earlier I think. But I am going to frame out the windows using 1x8 poplar and 1x2 poplar. Hopefully I’ll have this in the next video
Hey! Did you guys have missing holes for the screws?
Hey Brittney - I don’t believe so or else we would have called it out in the video. I think we actually had extra cause of the longer screws for the screens
@@MathersOnTheMap Brittney asked if you were missing holes, not screws - lol! I noticed because I am wondering the same thing.
So after traveling in the van for a while now, do you think the bunk windows were worth putting in? 😅
1000000000000% critical in hot weather
Hi. I notice y'all like to use an aerosol window cleaner to clean everything. Can you tell me the brand please? Thanks
Unfortunately I no longer have it but it’s just a typica glass cleaner you get at an autozone or hardware store
@@MathersOnTheMap thanks. My wife and I are enjoying your new videos of y'all traveling. Thanks for sharing them. We are just starting out with our build.
Does Left and Right side windows matter? Or can you use Right side on both sides or vice versa? Can only find right side available at the moment is why I ask. Thanks!
I think you can use the same for each side. I don’t recall marking a left vs a right
Good deal. Thanks for the response and thanks for sharing good knowledge. Cheers!
@@nathancarr2890 you got it Nathan thanks for watching and good luck with your build!
The website where I got the CRL windows did not say to use a butyl tape for the install. Wonder if that's actually necessary?
I agree David I thought I pinned a previous comment where I said that...if I were to do it again I probably wouldn’t use it. But it certainly doesn’t hurt (we haven’t had any leaks at all)
@@MathersOnTheMap yeah I’ve actually added lap sealant after we’ve had some leak issues. I don’t trust CRL’s rubber seal, even if it would work well in the beginning, i don’t think it’ll pass the test of time.
@@daddouuuu exactly my thoughts, with anything water/window related I rather do overkill and never have to worry about it
How did it cost for one bunk window?! 🤔
Was this a contour or non-contour window?
I believe non-contour window??? It’s the universal one from CRL
