The western allies of Ukraine have refused to provide long range weapons to Ukraine. But if Putin really will treat a Ukrainian offensive to liberate ”annexed” territories like an attack on Moscow, that will undermine the rationale for denying the long range weapons.
Except it doesn't. Putin may have cowed his generals and the opposition, but the best hope of getting out of this mess in one piece is to drive a wedge in Russian society and make is rot from within. Providing confirmation of the proposition notion that this is a defensive war is counter-productive. If Putin really manages to convince the Russian public that this war is a hill worth dying on it will be a disaster for everyone. Long range missile systems aren't even that big a deal anyway. The big deal in fact is that Ukraine cannot fight an extended war reliant on its Soviet era inventory. Tanks and artillery cannot sustain high intensity warfare forever. Western politicians love to big up high profile systems like HIMARS, but there comes a point when the meat and potatoes of their force will need to be replaced. American equipment is designed to provide a ridiculous revenue stream to the military industrial complex that created it, and require deep pockets and the most extravagant logistics enjoyed by any army on the face of the earth. European systems, though more appropriate are not available in sufficient quantities. The day is fast approaching when Ukraine cannot be sustained with a handful of sexy systems the public just love to lap up, and whatever garbage NATO finds down the back of the sofa. If Putin can get his replacements into the field and extend this war well into next year, the cracks will start to appear in the West's half-baked support, and Putin could still end up winning.
It wasn't a threat to strike first...it was a threat to defend if these longe range weapons are used against Russian territory. Which these regions will be, October 1st. So, keep pushing. The Cuban missile crisis was nothing compared to the situation were in, currently. Seems many just don't care. Too many think it's a game.

Make sure you have water filter system and a good generator also plastic to cover your windows if something happens. Staying inside long enough in a nuclear event can and will save your life. That thing where dozens of Russian officials, mayors and oligarchs, the people Putin depends upon to maintain his power structure, are calling for his resignation? That sounds to me like they think he's already lost control. Because Putin has a track record of having people who undermine him pushed out of high windows, I would not expect so many to speak against him unless they thought he was unable to punish them for it.

Providing confirmation of the proposition notion that this is a defensive war is counter-productive. If Putin really manages to convince the Russian public that this war is a hill worth dying on it will be a disaster for everyone. Long range missile systems aren't even that big a deal anyway. The big deal in fact is that Ukraine cannot fight an extended war reliant on its Soviet era inventory. Tanks and artillery cannot sustain high intensity warfare forever. Western politicians love to big up high profile systems like HIMARS, but there comes a point when the meat and potatoes of their force will need to be replaced. American equipment is designed to provide a ridiculous revenue stream to the military industrial complex that created it, and require deep pockets and the most extravagant logistics enjoyed by any army on the face of the earth. European systems, though more appropriate are not available in sufficient quantities. The day is fast approaching when Ukraine cannot be sustained with a handful of sexy systems the public just love to lap up, and whatever garbage NATO finds down the back of the sofa. If Putin can get his replacements into the field and extend this war well into next year, the cracks will start to appear in the West's half-baked support, and Putin could still end up winning.
It wasn't a threat to strike first...it was a threat to defend if these longe range weapons are used against Russian territory. Which these regions will be, October 1st.
