Send it to Giro mate - they give you a discount on a new one, and pretty sure they analyse them to better understand impacts and how to improve helmet design!
Giro Synth MIPS is a phenomenal helmet it prevented me from having any head injuries after a 30mph/48kph crash in a road race this February. I was out riding again 2 days later when I returned home and I truly believe this helmet saved my life as I landed directly on my head and rolled my neck while being hit by several other riders. I believe you can pick these up for around 110 GBP.
Scabs are pretty gruesome, but you already look much better! Not sure what the right helmet choice is, but I'd be tempted to take another Giro at a steep discount since it looks good and did the job.
I just got the Protone (red/white), i was a bit unsure as have a bit of a peahead and thought it may look strange but I love it to pieces and had a few comments about it. Having said that, the first two options (Bontrager and Met) look sweet indeed!
Specialized evade, specialized prevail 2, Kask protone, poc octal. I can recommend the first two personally. From a medical perspective I would recommend a mips helmet, purely because it prevents concussions and thus neurological problems when you are older. The only reason why I don't have mips is because I can get specialized helmets from my uncle with a 50% discount.
All the best for your recovery! Even just a week later you're looking a lot better. Guess you're maybe not feeling too much better yet? I use a Bell Gage but I have a small head. Seems to avoid the 1-Up mushroom head look.
Try them on, fit and comfort are also pretty important. The shape of your head (for example round or oval) can point you to different brands and/or narrow down the number of choices. The Bell Zephir / Stratus MIPS helmets may also be ones to consider. If I had to choose, Giro Cinder MIPS. As for MIPS, the theory behind it seems logical but I still have to see the hard evidence. Brands like Giro, Bell, Scott, Lazer and more don't publish the testing results with differences between MIPS and non-MIPS models. One of the reasons is probably that there is no standardized testing method (EN1078) for rotational acceleration. Also, helmet manufacturers want to join the hype train.
I just bought a Poc Octal a few days ago. It sits a bit lower on the temples which is nice and feels pretty secure. The look sure isn't for everyone though
As you mentioned is the case in the EU, it's also the case in the US - all bike helmets regardless of price must meet the same crash standard. As far as MIPS, I have two MIPS helmets, but as I understand it the "jury" is still out on whether MIPS provides significant improvement in head injury protection beyond a non-MIPS helmet. I'd go with which ever helmet fits best and has decent ventilation.
Giro have a reduced price crash replacement offer. So unless you were unhappy with your now damaged helmet, it might make financial sense to get a new synthe through that scheme.
R8 cal. good to see your doing good now. don't get Chinese as safety standards may lack. I've got the met manta which I would recommend you try b4 you buy for size. I found it a bit smaller than the kask range, also what about Limar Ultralight + 175 grams for a medium.. I'm happy with the met manta
I have 4 Helmets in total, Kask Mojito x 2 and a Kask Protone but my fav helmet is POC Aero Octal. Covers your head better than the Kask's and is roughly the same price as the Protone. Then again the Giro Rapha helmet is currently 30% off, never seen it but heard its a good helmet
My team is using lazer helmets, they have pretty similar inner part as giro so if you go with it, you wouldn't feel to much of the difference. They are also great looking. Z1 all the way :-)
I have the ballista and quite like it. I chose not to get mips though because I don't think it's necessary and it felt uncomfortable. However have you considered the POC Octal? I think that's the coolest looking helmet out of all of them
Bike Radar does a great analysis review on some great aero road helmets. I have a Bontrager Ballista and it's great, MIPS is added bonus. Good ventilation as well. Also reasonably priced.
I don't really have a specific helmet to recommend, but have a look at Merlin Cycles near Preston/Chorley. Almost everything is below rrp and they have a good selection........ I have no connections to them I'm just a regular customer....
Now that you know first hand what a helmet is supposed to do I would suggest trying on as many as you can. The fit is everything. FWIW, I have a huge head as well and the Bell Gage fits me great.
Lol, I just said I have a small head and the Bell Gage fits me well. Obviously we have different sizes but they must be getting their sizing right :) Lots of ventilation too
When I crashed and broke my helmet I sent Giro a thank you note for the quality of the helmet and keeping me from cracking my skull. They thanked me for the E-mail and sent me a coupon for 30% off a new helmet. Loyal customer now. Reply
I think if you send the helmet back most manufacturers will give you a discount on a new one, because you crashed. previous experience with met was very good
Blake Willemer this is the best allround helmet, good for when it is cold, when it warms up it can be opened, plus some aero, my go to helmet most of the year.
Dude, you've had first hand experience - stick with the helmet you've got / had (albeit a new one!) It's psychological, you may not feel as comfortable in another one, don't question it unless you weren't happy with it in the first place! Personally I've got a Kask mojito, on very good offer when bought. I also have a cheap Giro for MTB rides but that is serious mushroom!!! Stick with your previous brand!!
+Jacob McGowan sorry man 😔 been really struggling for the last few weeks, got back on the bike last week and starting to feel better now. Will hopefully have something up soon 😊
www(dot).bhsi(dot)org/testbycost.htm - worth a look at some research six helmets tested three $150+ three under $20 - impact forces pretty much the same on all. in other words you will be paying for comfort to a degree and for looks (probably more for the looks....)

Another great video Callum, you seem to be healing well. Can't wait to see the next one. 👍

I love the Kask Protone! Have been using mine for a year now and it sits well on my large head.
Lazer z1, you can use the aero shell or not with this helmet, i recommend it massively
I just bought a Poc Octal a few days ago. It sits a bit lower on the temples which is nice and feels pretty secure. The look sure isn't for everyone though
I've recently got a protone and I'm pretty happy with it. Kinda wished I went with the prevail 2, it sits well on everyone's head I've seen
I bought a giro air attack shield a while ago, I'm really enjoying it and it just looks absolutely awesome.
As you mentioned is the case in the EU, it's also the case in the US - all bike helmets regardless of price must meet the same crash standard. Hi' Have you considered a lazer. they are nice fitting also you can buy a aero shell for the colder days which go over the helmet. Thanks dom
Giro have a reduced price crash replacement offer. So unless you were unhappy with your now damaged helmet, it might make financial sense to get a new synthe through that scheme.
MET Manta! It's amazing!!! Looks sexy af, no mushroom look etc. Aero but well ventilated and very comfy! :)
Also MET are releasing a new helmet on the 3rd July. Think it's going to be worn by Dimension Data in the Tdf this year :)
Really like the Lazer Z1, best helmet I've had yet. And I got a Synthe as well...
+Jon Olsson think the z1 might be the most popular one in these comments, will be taking a serious look at it! Cheers 😊
I'm a Giro fan so that gets my vote. I'd see if they have crash replacement which should get you a discount on a new helmet.
R8 cal. good to see your doing good now. don't get Chinese as safety standards may lack. I've got the met manta which I would recommend you try b4 you buy for size. I found it a bit smaller than the kask range, also what about Limar Ultralight + 175 grams for a medium.. I'm happy with the met manta
I got the Cinder MIPS recently off Chain Reaction and really like it so far.
good to see your helmet..... and your face did it's job ;) looking a lot better now mate :) send giro a tweet with a picture of your helmet
Of the four, I'd say Bontrager but I'd say my favorite looking helmet is the Scott Cadence
You're healing fast. Nice to be young..
I like the look of the lazer z1 ? Available with mips or without and can have a hard shell added for minor aero gains and keep the bad weather out ?
My team is using lazer helmets, they have pretty similar inner part as giro so if you go with it, you wouldn't feel to much of the difference. They are also great looking. Z1 all the way :-)

+Shawn Murphy thanks Shawn I'll take a look at bike radar. Good to know the bontrager is good 👍😃
The giro helmet you have did it's job and probably saved your life so I would stay with that brand. also try tweeks cycles. great offers.
Kask Protone looks good!
Giro Cender, looks like your Giro but just à little bit cheap I very love it. sorry i'm french
Lazer Bullet looks nice but not out until October.
I don't really have a specific helmet to recommend, but have a look at Merlin Cycles near Preston/Chorley. Almost everything is below rrp and they have a good selection........
I have no connections to them I'm just a regular customer....
Specialized evade.. tho when puting ur head down not so good.. but great aero dinamics
Now that you know first hand what a helmet is supposed to do I would suggest trying on as many as you can. The fit is everything. FWIW, I have a huge head as well and the Bell Gage fits me great.
Lol, I just said I have a small head and the Bell Gage fits me well. Obviously we have different sizes but they must be getting their sizing right :)
Lots of ventilation too
looking better already, mate!
KASK infinty, areo and helps with heat and cold :)
12 mph drop test I believe is the standard test. Yes 12mph. Protone is very comfy, I wear a large and currently have 3 of em.
When I crashed and broke my helmet I sent Giro a thank you note for the quality of the helmet and keeping me from cracking my skull. They thanked me for the E-mail and sent me a coupon for 30% off a new helmet. Loyal customer now.

+Float Uphill maybe i should make a 'This Giro Helmet SAVED MY LIFE' video and see what they will do for me then 😂
Worth a try
Pretty certain Giro do a crash replacement service on helmets. Recover well.
I'm a fan of my poc octal.
Although it's abit of a marmite look
imo the POC octal only looks good if you're also wearing POC shades.
you look much better than other video...... hope you get well soon......
id get a bontrager ballista, good quality and free crash replacement for a year
Specialized Evade is worth a look too, love myn 😎
Big Mitch no replacement or discount if you crash, also no MIPS. For that price they should do at least one of those three
I think if you send the helmet back most manufacturers will give you a discount on a new one, because you crashed. previous experience with met was very good
Im having my eyes on the Scott cadence plus MIPS?
I would recommend the Poc Coron so you dont get anymore damage to your face.
JK man but any helmet is really fine as long as they are certified.
Poc raceday perhaps ? That's what I wear works rather well with my big mellon.
the one that the vegan cyclist uses is pritty cool. I use the carnac aero, only 25 I like it kept me safe when I crashed
How are you doing now? Are you riding? Hope you're well.
What about the Giro Savant?
where are u man? Come back
BONTRAGER BALLISTA MIPS, if you crash they give you a free replacement
Kask protone or balista bontrager

Blake Willemer this is the best allround helmet, good for when it is cold, when it warms up it can be opened, plus some aero, my go to helmet most of the year.
