I think it indicates where the "main melody" is and the way it gets continued in different instruments. It's a composition technique called "Klangfarbenmelodie". At least that is what it looks/sounds like to me.
I am hoping to do as much Francaix wind chamber music as possible! Unfortunately, I don't have scores of a lot of his pieces though, including the quartet... but I will do the quintets very soon.
