The most common complaint I hear from people is that most DJs mix too aggresively and don't let each song play long enough. Constantly mixing tracks after just a few bars, using crazy transitions and drop swapping every track isn't necessary. The crowd is there for the music, not to watch you show off your DJ skills!

First thing I learned when I started playing out live. I went to DJ school and wanted to show off my skills and how amazing I was at mixing, tricks, etc. Because no one knew who I was no-one gave a shit. People just want tracks they can dance and sing to. Simpler DJing is the best way and then drop in a sick trick every 8 or so songs just so the people who ARE paying attention realise you're a pro.
#1 DJ mistake: not enjoying the night/gig. Whether you messed something up, you're nervous or you're not really feeling it for any reason. Remember to have fun, in the end its all about the vibe you put down.

Excellent advice! as a open Format DJ who's been around I can honestly tell you Music selection is the key! No one cares how expensive your equipment is. With that said Know your equipment Inside out... Know how to Read your audience..Last but not least practice!!! Those are 4 Basic fundamental I've used back in the days.✌🏾🙏

As a hobby DJ doing a few house parties a year these are things I suggest:
1. If you've never DJed before, start with buying just a dj controller (like DDJ-400). If you already own any type of speakers, use those and find good quality sources to rip. This is to check if you truely like DJing or if it's just one of those sort term things you'll waste way too much money on.
2. If you like it, buy better speakers (preferably studio monitors). You can either upgrade your song quality by getting a subscription to a DJ pool, or you buy audio enhancing/analyzing software like Platinum Notes 4 and Mixed in Key (this is what I did). Remember to use good quality rip sources otherwise take a subscription.
3. If you enjoy DJing even more now and you want to try small parties/venues, decide whether you want to use the same speakers or upgrade to PA speakers (monitors are better for close range small groups and PA to really go LOUD!). I upgraded to a big PA and subwoofer combo for parties. I also bought a bluetooth adapter in case I don't want to DJ.
Even if you're a bit of an audiophile like me, you'll never hear the difference between quality rips and the official sources unless you use insanely expensive speakers. A one-time purchase of audio enhancing software in combination with being able to rip anything on the internet was worth way more to me than getting a DJ pool subscription that does not include everything I search for.

This is helpful. I'm getting back into DJing after a 10 year break. I was always frustratingly terrible at self promotion and social media, to the point where more than one girlfriend in my life insisted on taking it over for me, so there's a few takeaways for me in here.
I did alright though. I was usually called upon for doing warm up sets for touring trance and prog house internationals and right now I'm getting called upon for vinyl only and classics nights, so I must be doing something right!
I'm still working on other gigs though, I never wanted to be one of those DJs who only ever played tunes from their era. I always wanted to be moving forward.

i make sure everytyhing I DL off YT is in 320kbps, but I have to use another website to DL it. I filmed 1 of my bedroom sets, and watching it back has def helped me perfect my craft. it's not perfect, but i think its important to leave trails of how bad you are at things when you first start, just for comparison. this was good info :)

I can agree with the poor quality download being an issue as I provide rental sound systems and do a sound test with good quality tracks then when the DJ comes and plays you can hear the difference. Sometimes the DJ complains and I have to correct them.

I’ve been practicing DJing for almost a month now I picked up my uncle’s old NS7 he got when I was a kid. Is it as fancy as the new Rane’s and Pioneers? No but I can still learn what sounds good together do I have to speed it up or down or maybe I can add a scratch in here to give some effect to the track. On a 15 year old mixer and it still gives me Serato DJ Pro
Not reading the crowd I believe depends on the environment and party type. Obviously if you're a new DJ and taking gigs here and there you gotta know what type of environment or music genre club. But if you're well known or known to play a certain style. People will know and expect you to play what you preferred genre or known for.
Hi there nice video thx for these tips I just started and I have never player for a crowd My uncle gave me his old dj gear its a numark mixdeck express and I'm fully learning how to dj but I don't have any fx buttens on it do you think this is a problem bc every tutorial I watch even beginner one's I see people using something as simple as a high pass or low pass filter and I don't have that so every small mistake can't be covert It stresses me out . I've only been DJing as a hobbyist for a year and a half now, and I tend to not use sync unless I cannot get the exact bpm matched up with that of a different deck. It has to be a stupid kind of number though, like 125.13. I can manually get 125.09, or 124.98, but because I can't fine tune to get the exact figure, then I'll hit the sync button. Otherwise, it's manual. Manually adjusting the bpm is good practice in general, but I find that sync is always useful in a pinch and I think that's what it should be used for.
Totally! It's there to be used as a tool, and it's a great tool as long as you've got the skills to use it and not use it!

Sync or not who cares ? If you line up and mix clean and keep the croud happy on the dance floor. No one would judge you if using sync.

Agree with everything you said but damn I hate song requests! The thing is that I don't have much of experience and my mixing skills are not very high, it's difficult for me to mix different genres on the fly, that's why I practice a lot before I go somewhere. I love house, techno, trance and all the subgenres but never rap, r'n'b and hip-hop, so I prepare a 2 hour set of house music, practice it, make it perfect and go to the party. When someone is asking me to put hip-hop song during my house party (you know people are different and their music tastes are different, even if they know it's a house party, there's always someone asking you to pull out some hip-hop song) first of all I don't have it in my library, because it's just not my kind of music, I'm not ready for it and I didn't practice it.... that's why I hate song requests. Usually I ask the security guy (or one of my friends, a big guy, because the bigger is better in this kinda situation) to stand next to me and keep me away from song requesters lol!)))

DJs are human playlist filters. Our job is to listen to the input and filter out what we know to be bad ideas. However, hearing a good idea can literally change the game.
I played many times in a small club, there were 3 days of house music, when I played. Every single time there was one funny drunken gypsy who wanted to hear Barry White... later it beacame to a running gag between us and we were both smiling and laughing while he asked😅

I use a downloader to grab tracks for performing artists who do not have access to their own releases from time to time. To your point, audio files could sound bad if you do not use a downloader that provide the option to select the desired bitrate. Usually the desktop versions of these downloaders are more robust than web versions and provide that ability. After checking each file in a studio setting for sonic analysis, I can say the highest quality version of these downloads does not introduce any artifacts . In a live scenario, these same files add no noticeable degradation on professional sound systems that a fan or audiophile would hear. So I would not group all UA-cam downloaders in one heap category of providing less than stellar quality. But I understand as an authoritative source, Crossfader would not want to engage in activities that could be misconstrued as endorsement of illegal procurement of copyrighted material. Cheers!

Very informative content. Why would I waste my time aligning musical beat grids manually while there is a one tap Sync button on my Deck?
Because even though you use beat sync and your beat grid is on point, your songs will either be early or late, which also goes with timing as well. It's always good to beat match and learn since beat sync sometimes isn't reliable

Drake and House music are two different genres and bpm. I'm not just going to stop and play whatever request, first hand personal experience, I've cleared the whole room. So no I will not take any requests unless I'm in that specific bpm/genre
Taking requests is good and can be the difference between people dancing or not. However I’ve noticed when it’s busy and it can start to be overwhelming with people coming up to me every few minutes
Lol i not agree i call them laptop Djs. Most real club and underground Djs dont take requests and we play from USB sticks. I would never take a gig if i was told what to play and had to svow up with a laptop to Dj 😅
To keep from that happening I usually wait until the party is drawing down. Due to how it is where I live we will let people know were stopping that way they expect the night to be over. I cant have a crowd left cheering and nothing after. that's when we usually ask if anyone has any request and we play the pretty much the best ones if we cant do them all.
1st gen 128kbs is still fine, Re-codes and below starts to suck...

messy mixes (mixing vocals on top of vocals or melody on top of melody) , trying to do all this stuff james hype is doing but ineffective ..changing genre too fast, talking to the mic too much, scratching too much, using too much effects, not mixing in key (it works sometimes only) ,not knowing your tracks collection, being rude to requests, don't try to improve, leave the whole track playing trough, be late on gigs, have lunch in the middle of the gig 😂
Stop accepting gigs that only pay you $150 for four to five hour gigs. You’re worth more than that especially you are an experienced dj
One major one you're missing - not organizing your music. Organizing your music properly is a major priority to make sure that your performances are above average. If you want a successful DJ career, don't skip one of the most basic and important assets - Your music library!!!

11. Never let any of your audience have a go on your decks or play a request that the person asking likes, but the rest of the room would go "WTF?" and the vibe instantly dies.
12. Don't let drunk people lean over your decks, while holding their drink.

all rippers i have seen are 320 or 256. my feeling is if you are djing for money, you need to pay for your records. music is so much cheaper now so no excuse. i remember paying a tenner for vinyls back in the 90s. was expensive!

100%. Platinum notes will give you amazing results to keep your music library up to date. Using that, along with mixed in key, is a game changing combo that is going to amplify your entire libraries musical capalbilities. I'm actually thinking about doing a video on how vital both are.
I have mixed feelings about this video. For start, probably very few experienced DJs will watch such content, if they are a long time in this field, probably for the reason, probably they doing it right. Going forward, for new DJs it's kinda brutal to buy all the songs they play. It cost a lot. As a beginner DJ, you barely make any money from it at all. Also, as a beginner DJ, I still trying to my path, and what kind of music I would like to mix. Not everyone is able to afford that. I'm not encouraging piracy, as soon as you start making enough as a DJ, you need to buy the tracks you play- that's my motto. Also, yt rips can be good quality as well. Reading the crowd. This is probably so much important only for people who mix all that pop stuff, all the hits. I kinda strongly believe that for other genre music, this appeals is not that strong. Not saying that you can just focus on your controller, but if someone comes to a techno club, and you mix techno music, you need to have a really shitty taste to make your crowd upset about your choice of music. And last but not least, if you are a wedding DJ than yea probably you should pay attention to someone's requests, but if you play let's say jungle set in that kind of club and some random requests drake- you will upset your crowd that came for the jungle. Just stick to your music, and play what you love, because if you will do what you love to do, you will do it much better than you would do just because someone wants you to do so. Same story with any job. No offence, not even trying to be smart ass rude dude here, just sharing my own experience as a beginner in this field. And I totally agree with other tips in this video. I will film my next set :)
I recently started out DJing and bought a record pool subscription (unlimited downloads for about 30 eur for the full month). Ended up with a lot of songs for like a cent each.
Still not much money going to the producers but at least it's a legitimate and cheap way to build a nice collection (also good quality!)

youtube rips aren’t good quality
'UA-cam rips can be good quality' - 100% incorrect. You cannot get a good youtube RIP, it's simply not possible and the fact you believe that means you don't know what you're talking about.
UA-cam already compresses the audio it uploads, so the high end and low end is cut. When you RIP it via a converter, no matter how 'high quality' the ripper says it is, it'll compress the audio even more. Ultimately this results in music with no sub bass and muddy high end. When played on a big system you won't have that thump and crispness from a high-quality track.
If you're dj'ing at a friend's party on small speakers probably no one will notice that much, but as soon as you play on a tuned system people will notice. It's not a good look.

Got some good relevant points there, but I AM going to disagree with the good quality YT downloads. I have a small bunch (about twenty or so) of YT rips that are just 'ok' on a laptop, but when I tried pumping them through proper Monitors, they sounded absolutely shit. No question. Beginners can always try free trials from places like Beatport (and not least because they have a funky online controller thing going on too - so you can mix with previews and stuff, pretty neat), get ideas or new inspiration from Soundcloud and so on and so forth, there's loads of options and plenty to find out there if you go looking for it.

Where can Arab DJs get high quality songs from? Is it acceptable if we download it in 320k format and not 128k?
320k is acceptable if comes from a quality original source and sounds good on high fidelity equipment.
They make it seem that ur not a real Dj if you're not using an Apple laptop or if you're not using or if you're not using serato.... just the things that they just put in people's minds to make it seem that u need to become a good dj,🤦
Well, if I may throw my hat in the ring here:
After 20 years of DJing, I can say this. The software and hardware DO NOT make the entertainer. HOWEVER, those two examples are industry standard for a reason. They are reliable! With that said, anybody can learn to DJ with less expensive options and get great results. You just have to know your budget, the spec requirements and the musical knowledge to perform at it's peak.

Here’s my thing with requests and I know this is gonna sound illogical. If only one person is asking for a track, to me that just makes it seem like they’re the only people who wanna hear it and nobody else does. I feel like you really need to gauge what they wanna hear

Great question - I was there at one point. The best advice, have an adult that you trust, whether a parent or guardian, help you find work. In order to make people take you seriously, you need serious representation AND enough content and work to showcase your talents. Go ahead and make sure you have a MINIMUM of 3 - 30 minute mixes that showcase your DJ talents. If you want more advice, go ahead and shoot me a DM. I'd be happy to give you some advice.

Not all songs are available on record pool or iTunes, some local African artists have their songs only on YT. Record pool works best only with western music. Djs from west or who mostly perform western musics don’t understand this. Thanks

Sync dousnt always work. Watch the waveforms and by ear.
Watching waveforms is the biggest mistake you can make! Use your ears. If you really need visuals you can see the grooves on the record. Records are the best sound 🌈
Like they talked about music quality...and then showed 320kbs, standart mp3... instead of flac or wav with better frequency performance. Specially when you've good performance speakers...yea, sure...nobody will tell a difference between 320 and 1440.
320K can sound great if the source file that was converted is great. 320K can sound crappy if the source file is crappy. Bad leveling (clipping because it's too loud) or over compression will make a WAV file sound bad. In the end, test the music in a high quality system.
This is more about social skills rather than musically skills. Djing is not difficult at all. Its just a fact. Fun, but easy.

if I download a deadmau5 song, it’s going to be perfect, in my mind. its already mixed, mastered, i am listening to the mp3 that deadmau5 signed off on to play at venues. Is this incorrect?

Dude. I am a tuesday club dj. I can't afford to buy good tracks or have a record pool. I get paid $100 a night split between 2 to 4 people. Dj pool and buying tracks is too expensive for a tuesday night like that, and nobody tips. Even though we have request cards and qr codes on them.

I'm a new DJ looking for gigs, but for the love of god don't accept everything. Don't accept someone trying to be cheap for their wedding when you are new. Do you really want to screw up someone's wedding? Maybe if I knew them and they were super chill, no problem. I got asked to do 2 weddings and I said no. I got asked to do a birthday party but focused on mexican music. I don't listen to much of that. I listen more to colombian and cuban spanish music. So I further asked what she was looking for and I had to decline. I also got asked to DJ for kid's birthdays but I don't focus on acquiring clean versions of music
Maybe I could learn and aquire more of that music, but beginning to DJ you still have to have some essence of comfortability and most importantly still HAVE FUN! Don't sell your soul just to get a gig, but be open minded and discuss any gig opportunity with the person if possible to see what they really want
