I think people who are complaining that you have a "fake accent" are the ones who only know how to speak in English. Code switching is very common if you're bilingual. You don't have to explain yourself, Sara! 🤗

I speak and think in 2 languages because my parents spoke to me in both English and my native language. If you don't frequently speak and think in those 5 languages then code switching is likely to happen. BUT AGAIN that doesn't mean it's silly or it's non-existent.

I feel like so many of you are missing the point. It’s not like she’s made up this Indian accent to feel more connected to her roots. That would be weird. If she naturally spoke in a British accent, and then created and put on an Indian accent to feel more Indian (I mean I still wouldn’t judge her but some of you guys’ criticism would atleast make sense) that could still be described as inauthentic. But that’s not what’s happened here. This is an Indian person who lived in India, with parents who spent most of their lives in India, who speaks Marathi at home. It’s the British accent that she put on to fit in to her new circumstances. That’s the mask. Her Indian accent is just her - Sara. So when you say it comes across as a performance, what you’re really saying is that you were comfortable watching her when she spoke in a British accent and now that she’s no longer making the effort, you’re mad.
as someone who has spent most of their life in India and then moved to Hong Kong, I adopted a mixed americanish accent. I don't feel like a different person though, this is just how I've grown. She had her british accent for 10+ years, so there's no way that didn't become her natural accent after this much time. I find this wierd connecting with your culture can be done in more meaningful ways. The point about her being more comfortable and open.in her indian accent doesn't make sense, because again she had her british accent for like at least 7 years.
@@geetika6540 exactly. I’ve actually seen comments from maharastrian people who still live in her region asking why she’s talking like that? As Indians in her region DO NOT have that thick of an accent unless they’re extremely old. She moved to England at 10 years of age. Coincidentally my bf moved from Russia at age 10 as well, he speaks fluent Russian daily on the phone but has a CANADIAN accent. I asked him about this situation. He told me if he just woke up one day using a Russian accent his family, friends and ME would all make fun of him because it’s a conscious decision to suddenly wear an accent like a hat. She’s mocking it without even realizing it and it sounds like a caricature. If I just woke up one day using a Swedish accent I’d get roasted, rightly so! Like you said, there are way more meaningful ways to connect to your culture that don’t include sounding like a cartoon version of said culture

I have a friend who has Singaporean and British parents and when she speaks to her dad or any European person, she naturally has a thick British accent but when she speaks to her mom or other people, her accent is Singaporean. Code switching for accents is a lot more common than you would think

i relate to this so badly 😭😭 i am indian who’d moved to the uk for undergrad and i had adapted my accent to the norm here but i feel like it’s a whole different persona from when i talk to my family versus when i interact with people in my daily life!!
As an American born Pakistani who’s had a similar experience when it comes to “ethnic identity crisis”, I don’t think your accent matters. It’s more how rooted you are to your culture. Do you speak your mother tongue often? Do you listen to South Asian music and watch Hindi films or shows? Do you participate in events relating to your culture’s/country’s holidays? Do you wear ethnic clothing representing your culture/country often? Do you have south asian friends with whom you communicate using your mother tongue? These things all help in getting you closer to your “South Asian” identity rather than having an accent. They not only help you get closer but also teach you about your own identity.
As someone who moved to study, involuntarily adopted the accent I relate to it so much!! I feel like a different person when I am not talking in an Indian accent too!! It's like a ghost in me speaking that way, and I am so aware of myself just like you. More power to you, Sara! Thank you for sharing this!
I'm so happy to see people share their stories with this because I never hear it discussed and linguistic discrimination really effected me as a teenager and I didn't know how to talk about it at the time.
Maybe she picked it up with her parents, like her parents speak english in an accent so she naturally changes her accent to match theirs and it has never been forgotten. But it's not the same case for all immigrants, for example, i only speak in english with british accent or I speak in my native language, no in between.

I’m half German, half English. My mums German but speaks poor English, my dad is English but speaks fluent English and German. I have this same thing because I live in England I have an English accent but when I speak to my mum or German family members I switch into a slight accent to make it easier for them to understand as well as speaking German if my family don’t know English words.
Having an "Indian accent" won't make you more connected with your roots I'm also living in an english spoken country I've a good fluent accent and it doesn't make less Indian or who you are so ofc speak the accent you want but this video you made is about you seeking validation and comfort in your favour from the public which is so pitty in my opinion because the only validation that you should be seeking should be from you and speaking in british accent makes you feel that you are a different person then maybe you should seek medical attention about split personality because you can be talking in british accent and still feel and be who you are as an individual a language or accent shouldn't be defining your borders of who you are internally unless you are fully aware and doing it on purpose to look more likeable and accepted which 'influencers' in this case you tend to do so instead of seeking public validation sit down and get things sorted inside of you and your mind so that it helps you in the long run.

I think having the correct pronunciation of a language doesn’t mean the erasure of your identity. Just like how when we learn French we learn it with the French accent rather than French with a British accent.

I’m not even bilingual but as someone who’s been around a lot of people who speak two countries or who came as immigrants this makes complete sense to me. Whenever they’re here surrounded by Americans, their accent decreases a little bit and starts to sound a little bit more American, because they’re not speaking in their native language or surrounded by people who are speaking with an accent from their native country. When they go home, They start speaking in their native tongue and their American accent goes away a little bit and they have a thicker accent of their native tongue when they speak English. It’s not surprising that you would have two different modes, where if you’re thinking about the native language you might start speaking English with a stronger accent because this is the accent you would use when you speak the native language, but if you’re thinking about only speaking English you might speak English with a more American or British accent, which you have learned over the time you have lived in that place.I don’t know why people are over complicating this. And I think if you didn’t make a video like this people would’ve attacked you anyways, you can never make people happy online but just know that not all of us are thinking negatively and to me it makes perfect sense

I’am mixed race, South African/Denmark. Grow up in Denmark, when my sister was born and was sickly, so was sent to South Africa, I was 4-5 years old. Forgot how to speak danish, and only spoke English and africansk.. I don’t have a accent, but I do mix language, especially if I’am nervous..

people be forgetting that people who grow up in a foreign country for majority of their lives have two to three different accents. one is their own language, english in their hometown accent and the accent they pick up with people around them. I think its no surprise u have two accents.

This is me in Nigeria even though I grew up in Nigeria. Now I’m schooling in the UK but it’s obv not home. I have a Nigerian accent, a British accent and sometimes an American accent pops up 😂 so I love hearing you switch and the people saying you’re faking, forget about them, they seem to live in a bubble

As an African American my experience isn’t as bad as yours but code switching is absolutely annoying. AAVE is definitely a thing and I found myself trying to turn into this Cali valley girl. “Mane I aint doing dat.” “What you on?” Vs “I’m not doing that.” “Are you okay?” Because the first one is considered “ghetto.” I don’t to this day think AAVE is studied enough. Watch a rapper name Dee 1 do interviews he is literally one of the most intelligent men I have ever seen and he doesn’t code switch no matter one he sticks ferm to his Louisiana accent. The CEO of my old company did not hire this black man because he said “Ax and not Ask.” The man was still qualified and capable. It’s honestly sad that code switching has to be a thing. BUT as of recently I have been able to just be me and the most accepting has been my YT church family! But most importantly me mot caring anymore. Staying true to me has gotten me so much favor with highter ups. That same CEO would come to my desk and great me every morning and when I had Covid he called and checked on me

Had many English friends and developed an English accent even mostly living in Kuwait. Apparently I tried very hard to lose the accent upon returning to America at 5-6 (I have no memory of this, only my mother’s stories). When I was a teen I decided to pick it back up and the accent came back very quickly. But, my mother always criticized it saying “you’re in America now” and telling me people would judge me big time and think I was “stuck up” and if they acted like my accent was ok or cool they would just be pretending to be polite about it. (This is not the only issue in my relationship with my mother!) This created a situation where I’m basically secretly bi-dialectal. like your accents there is no real middle ground between them. I would be most comfortable swapping between American and English 50/50 but people have no idea of this. I’m terrified Americans would think I’m being fake, or worse, Brits would think I’m being dumb or having a go at them. The only person I’m comfortable speaking English in front of is my own daughter. She speaks mostly American but has some English, it was so funny the other day she kept accidentally saying “pahk” and had to continually force-correct herself to “parrrk” 😅

I’ve been in Ireland since I was a kid and my accent is mostly Irish, I’m not putting it on purposefully. I can’t do an Indian accent, even if I try. Maybe because I came to Ireland when I was young? And I knew English before we moved to Ireland? Idk. I pick up accents easy, I guess if I lived in India I’d pick up the accent?

I think it’s so strange when people say “I didn’t feel British enough or Indian enough” like the people around them care. I think once you accept that your are not the main character you will realize that most people have an understanding that we live in a big world and no one is the same and no one cares how you talk or how you look or what you eat drink or wear. It’s like someone who is high and so Paranoid that everyone knows…nobody knows and most importantly nobody cares.
I recently saw comments fighting left and right saying u faked ur accent and stuff But ive been watching ur vids since a long time, and i vaguely recall how u said u moved when u were a kid, which justifies everything bcs i am an Indian myself, and i can vouch on how english accents are pretty much influenced by what we hear everyday, and it differs from place to place with that too. honestly even in india itself my hindi accent changed from how it was in my early childhood to now...i had UP hindi accent, to mumbai hindi accent, to punjabi hindi accent then haryanvi and now its messed up🤣🤣🤣🤣 (I don't know if its sccent or dialect so pardon me for that)....but yaa totally relatable, as now I live in southern america and I hv started using their slang and my english accent still hv that indian thing to it but sometimes it does not.

My love, this is the diaspora. Diaspora will never feel enough to be either one of their two identities, the way I found a good way to settle in my identity was accepting that I am diaspora. I’m Ethiopian but I was born and raised in the states, in Ethiopia I wasn’t Ethiopian I was American, but in America I was African and never fully American so describing myself as diaspora became the easiest way to show myself. This happens to immigrants as well, when they stay in a different place from their native home for too long they develop into a diaspora. I think it’s this beautiful point of intersectionality that only diasporas can understand each other regardless of where they are from. I’m so glad you’re embracing both your identities, and choosing what’s best for you and no one else!
i have literally the same experience. i was born in bosnia and moved to germany when i was 10. it is easier because i dont look different from the typical german, bosnia is still in europe. Its just hard cause i cant speak perfect german nor bosnian. i feel quite embarrassed when making mistakes. im not really german but i feel like im missing out on a lot of bosnian culture. i found very good friends who accept me though so im very greatful
At the end of the day speak in the accent you feel most comfortable in, nothing wrong with that. Not every immigrant will relate to this though, because some of us moved to London at a super young age, and we naturally grew up speaking english or forgot our accent, if we even had one. But there's other ways to express your south asian identity, for me my accent is the only british thing about me, but from my taste in food, clothes, places i go to, activities i partake in, I am always a south asian, accent doesn't change anything.

I would love to hear you speak Marathi! I speak English, and I live in Wales and I was born in Wales, I am proud to be Welsh and I feel like I just don't have the Welsh accent at all... it's only that the town that I live in is too close to England and I guess it might've influenced my accent. To be honest, I think "dear God, I really don't sound Welsh, so how could I possibly conceive the notion that I am Welsh if my accent is weird in Welsh and English". Welsh is my (sort of) second language, and my accent is *dreadful* in it.
Tbh I have a Yorkshire accent due to living in the uk for a very long time, but at the same time won’t speak English with my Asian accent. It just doesn’t come naturally. But my accent will change when I speak Tamil, not with an English accent. So I don’t understand switching the language to a different accent when you can speak perfectly fine in both!

you know what's even more interesting is that I was born and brought up in india and I am from pune too, so I have an indian accent through and through, but even here, I unknowingly have switched up my english accent when I am speaking with someone from south bombay (a comparatively richer area) vs when I am speaking with someone from pune or from north bombay. I switch up my Hindi accent when I speak with someone from the north of India(a predominantly hindi speaking area) vs when I am speaking to someone who isn't from a hindi speaking background. accent switching is a very human thing to do, especially if you're multilingual. and it's a lot harder if you're deliberately doing so. so if you ever hear someone code-switching while speaking, know that most likely it's not deliberate and just a matter of habit.

I feel like so many of you are missing the point. It’s not like she’s made up this Indian accent to feel more connected to her roots. That would be weird. If she naturally spoke in a British accent, and then created and put on an Indian accent to feel more Indian (I mean I still wouldn’t judge her but some of you guys’ criticism would atleast make sense) that could still be described as inauthentic.
But that’s not what’s happened here. This is an Indian person who lived in India, with parents who spent most of their lives in India, who speaks Marathi at home. It’s the British accent that she put on to fit in to her new circumstances. That’s the mask. Her Indian accent is just her - Sara.
So when you say it comes across as a performance, what you’re really saying is that you were comfortable watching her when she spoke in a British accent and now that she’s no longer making the effort, you’re mad.

as someone who has spent most of their life in India and then moved to Hong Kong, I adopted a mixed americanish accent. I don't feel like a different person though, this is just how I've grown. She had her british accent for 10+ years, so there's no way that didn't become her natural accent after this much time. I find this wierd connecting with your culture can be done in more meaningful ways. The point about her being more comfortable and open.in her indian accent doesn't make sense, because again she had her british accent for like at least 7 years.

As Indians in her region DO NOT have that thick of an accent unless they’re extremely old. She moved to England at 10 years of age. Coincidentally my bf moved from Russia at age 10 as well, he speaks fluent Russian daily on the phone but has a CANADIAN accent. I asked him about this situation. He told me if he just woke up one day using a Russian accent his family, friends and ME would all make fun of him because it’s a conscious decision to suddenly wear an accent like a hat. She’s mocking it without even realizing it and it sounds like a caricature. If I just woke up one day using a Swedish accent I’d get roasted, rightly so! Like you said, there are way more meaningful ways to connect to your culture that don’t include sounding like a cartoon version of said culture

I have a friend who has Singaporean and British parents and when she speaks to her dad or any European person, she naturally has a thick British accent but when she speaks to her mom or other people, her accent is Singaporean. Code switching for accents is a lot more common than you would think

I've a dominant English accent when I speak English but I also have the Indian accent when I speak Hindi, and I'd been through so much of shit in 12th grade because of this. As an American born Pakistani who’s had a similar experience when it comes to “ethnic identity crisis”, I don’t think your accent matters. It’s more how rooted you are to your culture. Do you speak your mother tongue often? Do you listen to South Asian music and watch Hindi films or shows? Do you participate in events relating to your culture’s/country’s holidays? Do you wear ethnic clothing representing your culture/country often? Do you have south asian friends with whom you communicate using your mother tongue? These things all help in getting you closer to your “South Asian” identity rather than having an accent. They not only help you get closer but also teach you about your own identity.

I am Indian, living in the USA, but I grew up around A LOT of Indian influence, almost as much as American, I have a big family that is old fashioned and a little stricter.

I’m half German, half English. My mums German but speaks poor English, my dad is English but speaks fluent English and German. I have this same thing because I live in England I have an English accent but when I speak to my mum or German family members I switch into a slight accent to make it easier for them to understand as well as speaking German if my family don’t know English words.

I’m not even bilingual but as someone who’s been around a lot of people who speak two countries or who came as immigrants this makes complete sense to me. Whenever they’re here surrounded by Americans, their accent decreases a little bit and starts to sound a little bit more American, because they’re not speaking in their native language or surrounded by people who are speaking with an accent from their native country. When they go home, They start speaking in their native tongue and their American accent goes away a little bit and they have a thicker accent of their native tongue when they speak English. It’s not surprising that you would have two different modes, where if you’re thinking about the native language you might start speaking English with a stronger accent because this is the accent you would use when you speak the native language, but if you’re thinking about only speaking English you might speak English with a more American or British accent, which you have learned over the time you have lived in that place.I don’t know why people are over complicating this. And I think if you didn’t make a video like this people would’ve attacked you anyways, you can never make people happy online but just know that not all of us are thinking negatively and to me it makes perfect sense

people be forgetting that people who grow up in a foreign country for majority of their lives have two to three different accents. one is their own language, english in their hometown accent and the accent they pick up with people around them. I think its no surprise u have two accents.

I am American but raised overseas age 2-5. Had many English friends and developed an English accent even mostly living in Kuwait. Apparently I tried very hard to lose the accent upon returning to America at 5-6 (I have no memory of this, only my mother’s stories).
When I was a teen I decided to pick it back up and the accent came back very quickly. But, my mother always criticized it saying “you’re in America now” and telling me people would judge me big time and think I was “stuck up” and if they acted like my accent was ok or cool they would just be pretending to be polite about it. (This is not the only issue in my relationship with my mother!)
This created a situation where I’m basically secretly bi-dialectal. like your accents there is no real middle ground between them.
I would be most comfortable swapping between American and English 50/50 but people have no idea of this. I’m terrified Americans would think I’m being fake, or worse, Brits would think I’m being dumb or having a go at them.
The only person I’m comfortable speaking English in front of is my own daughter. She speaks mostly American but has some English, it was so funny the other day she kept accidentally saying “pahk” and had to continually force-correct herself to “parrrk” 😅

I’ve been in Ireland since I was a kid and my accent is mostly Irish, I’m not putting it on purposefully. I can’t do an Indian accent, even if I try. Maybe because I came to Ireland when I was young? And I knew English before we moved to Ireland? Idk. I pick up accents easy, I guess if I lived in India I’d pick up the accent?

I think it’s so strange when people say “I didn’t feel British enough or Indian enough” like the people around them care. But ive been watching ur vids since a long time, and i vaguely recall how u said u moved when u were a kid, which justifies everything bcs i am an Indian myself, and i can vouch on how english accents are pretty much influenced by what we hear everyday, and it differs from place to place with that too. It's ridiculous to see people fight over stuff that U are most aware of, but i guess that's the internet for u. My love, this is the diaspora. Diaspora will never feel enough to be either one of their two identities, the way I found a good way to settle in my identity was accepting that I am diaspora. I’m Ethiopian but I was born and raised in the states, in Ethiopia I wasn’t Ethiopian I was American, but in America I was African and never fully American so describing myself as diaspora became the easiest way to show myself. This happens to immigrants as well, when they stay in a different place from their native home for too long they develop into a diaspora. I think it’s this beautiful point of intersectionality that only diasporas can understand each other regardless of where they are from. I’m so glad you’re embracing both your identities, and choosing what’s best for you and no one else!
i have literally the same experience. i was born in bosnia and moved to germany when i was 10. it is easier because i dont look different from the typical german, bosnia is still in europe. Its just hard cause i cant speak perfect german nor bosnian. i feel quite embarrassed when making mistakes. im not really german but i feel like im missing out on a lot of bosnian culture. i found very good friends who accept me though so im very greatful

At the end of the day speak in the accent you feel most comfortable in, nothing wrong with that. Not every immigrant will relate to this though, because some of us moved to London at a super young age, and we naturally grew up speaking english or forgot our accent, if we even had one. But there's other ways to express your south asian identity, for me my accent is the only british thing about me, but from my taste in food, clothes, places i go to, activities i partake in, I am always a south asian, accent doesn't change anything.

It's really nice to meet the Indian accent Sara! Also, all this time, everybody was shipping you and Louis, not realising you were already together was a nice twist. You both are so cute together. I'm partial but I love your Indian accent. You sound closer to me if that makes sense? As in, the accent makes me feel like you're one of my friends because that's what we sound like.

I speak English, and I live in Wales and I was born in Wales, I am proud to be Welsh and I feel like I just don't have the Welsh accent at all... it's only that the town that I live in is too close to England and I guess it might've influenced my accent. To be honest, I think "dear God, I really don't sound Welsh, so how could I possibly conceive the notion that I am Welsh if my accent is weird in Welsh and English". Welsh is my (sort of) second language, and my accent is *dreadful* in it.
Tbh I have a Yorkshire accent due to living in the uk for a very long time, but at the same time won’t speak English with my Asian accent. It just doesn’t come naturally. But my accent will change when I speak Tamil, not with an English accent. So I don’t understand switching the language to a different accent when you can speak perfectly fine in both!
I felt the same way when I moved from the Caribbean to England. I felt like I was a different person trying to get people to understand me so I changed my accent. I sooo get it.
Hi Sarah.. I just need to get this off my chest. I have watched one of your videos a few months ago. You remind me of someone who passed away two years ago. She and I both from Pune.
you know what's even more interesting is that I was born and brought up in india and I am from pune too, so I have an indian accent through and through, but even here, I unknowingly have switched up my english accent when I am speaking with someone from south bombay (a comparatively richer area) vs when I am speaking with someone from pune or from north bombay. I switch up my Hindi accent when I speak with someone from the north of India(a predominantly hindi speaking area) vs when I am speaking to someone who isn't from a hindi speaking background. accent switching is a very human thing to do, especially if you're multilingual. and it's a lot harder if you're deliberately doing so. so if you ever hear someone code-switching while speaking, know that most likely it's not deliberate and just a matter of habit.
