Hi Everyone,
In this tutorial I’m showing 4 simple exercises to practice mixing on paper, what to avoide and how. I am showing a few typical mistakes and what you need to do avoid them. I am explaining the altimate water to paint ratio for mixing on paper and what to do if the mixture is thicker and the mixing is not happening on its own. I’m answering questions: why you and how to mix watercolours. There are a number of example to take it further than just to do a swatch.
I am also refering to a number of full demos on PATREON to practice watercolor mixing further. Here is one of them www.patreon.co...
Hope you enjoyed it. If so, please like and subscribe!
Have fun painting!

Thank you so much Victor!!!
Wow... this is awesome. It sure looks easy, though I know it isn't!
I joined your patreon - you teach so many things I know I need to learn and understand. It’s not easy, but I am hoping I will begin to develop a better understanding of light and dark. Color mixing is definitely challenging.
This is awesome! I would recommend when you're watching have a piece of scrap paper handy and try to repeat color values, hues, brush marks, etc and after that do the whole painting. This is a good technique to develop muscle memory. Thanks for telling me about color mixing, I've recorded another video about mixing greys, doing a color chart and talking about that two opposites don't always make a neutral grey. I was hesitant to post it, as I already have two videos about mixing greys. You comment reminded me that every bit of information can be useful 👍
You are one of my favourite You Tubers at the moment as you tackle subjects I really need showing techniques and theory behind the use of watercolours. Thx u r the best.
Thank you!
Thx for your work
This was so informative and incredibly helpful. Thank you :)

Thank you Nina! There are so many things that I have never thought about!!! I'm trying to remember all that you say! I will have to watch this video 3 more times to get it! Thank you so much!!!
I ordered the paint and paper! I used your code! I hope this will help you in someway!!!👍👍👍
Thank you Marvin, I got a little percentage from sales, but I truly believe it's a good product, I would not recommend if I didn't. So far all my viewers happy with it. I'm so glad our opinions match ☺️👍 hope you like it too when you receive it
It's a pleasure! Do you think it's too much in one video, I'm trying to make it useful but not overwhelming with info, especially for beginners?
My dear friend I don't think it is to much!!! I want to learn as much as I can! So I will review your information multiple times until I get! And so will all the rest that really want to learn!!! I thank you so much for all your in depth information!!! I can see that your heart is into it! I hope you are monetize at this point by UA-cam!!!🙂🙃🙂👍
Great. Thank you.
Nice tutorial.
Thanks regards.
Thank you!
Thank you so much❤
Great video Nina! I've resolved to fill one practice sheet every day no matter what. This gave me ideas for sure. I like the idea of experimenting with different pigments a lot. Obviously we should devote a lot of mileage to getting to know them.
Thank you Justin! You can't bit daily exercises, well done!!! Yes, true about the mileage, eventually you see real life in this mixes 🤣
Just wow!
Thank you!
Amazing!
Great ideas for practice and mixing colors....thank you so much!
Спасибо большое, Нина!
Love the techniques❤ truly appropriate for water colour...
Am learning a LOT from your channel. Thank you ❤
I'm so glad! Thank you Suhita!
I'll try that paper too. Just ordered some with your code. I'll use it for my daily practice from now on. It's a little cheaper than what I have been using but looks just as good.
Hi Justin, have you received it? How do you like it?
Hey! Yes I did! I love it and have been using it for my daily practice. It's better than the paper I had been using. I haven't tried the pigments yet but I plan to this week@@nvfineartstudio7296
Hi Nina. Fantastic tips for wet on wet. Your brushwork is so amazing. Did you add white highlights to the birds on the right painting. And to the outlines of the people on the left painting, at the end of the last 2 paintings? As they look really quite white in the final shot. Or is this just unpainted paper? Thank you for your excellent classes and recommendations. Gayle
Once again thanks. You are a great inspiration ❤
I'm so glad! Thank you!!!
Oh I really like your video Nice beautiful paintings Thank you 😊
I'm so glad! Thank you!
Thank you so much for your lesson
It's a pleasure!
Hi Nina I have got my Meeden pack the paper is beautiful the water bowl is great the brushes are soft really like the flat brushes could do with a bigger round brush the paints are good quite bright I mainly used Daniel smith and winsor and Newton paints but for playing with they are great I never got the cute green leaf to seperate the paper but for the price they are good
I'm so glad you're happy with the purchase! And thank you for sharing this with me! I completely agree it's a good product, especially for the price. I contacted Meeden and they said they are in the process of adding a large round brush, can't wait to see it ☺️ I also like that the brushes are light in weight. I took them with me on plein air on the weekend instead of my typical case with brushes and it made such a difference.
Inspiring as usual..👍
Thanks a lot 😊
Thank you, your teaching style will encourage me to have a go, relax and try. Experiment. But I wanted to know - what type of brush/brand are you using in the first demo's where you're using your traditional palette? I have some faux squirrel round brushes. Would that be a good substitute if you're using real sable or real kolinsky?
I'm so glad! It Escoda Petit Gris mop and Escoda Perla round. Yes, definitely mixed bristles will work. You need to reload often to use different colors here, so you do not need much mixture to go long way.
very good
I'm so glad! Thank you!
Inspirational
Thank you! I'm so glad!
Hi Nina, great lesson but while I agree am just curious why you think colour charts are useless LOL
Hi David, great question! You do them onece, on one little square, with one possible outcome of mixing two colors... Firstly, there is a spectrum of possibilities, secondly you never tend to comeback to them, and lastly you need to know the results by heart, there is no time to think when you paint...but practicing doing little washes gives you the skill of mixing, identifying hues temperature and value, and creating clean washes and color transitions. Hope this helps 👍
Charts like a dictionary in learning language, you look up the word, but useless for speaking fluently, you need practice using words to speak fluently.
You've been doing this for a long time, haven't you?
