- In this video, we look at two of your questions relating to personal essays and transition & linking words and phrases.
We begin by looking at how to plan for and write a personal essay to apply to academic programs. This is especially useful if you are applying for university through the common app and need some ideas.
We work through the steps, from research and brainstorming all the way to a final draft.
The second part looks at transition/linking words & expressions. These are used to connect ideas, sentences, paragraphs, and so on. These expressions have functions. For example:
Add: in addition, moreover, furthermore, another, etc.
Show similarity: likewise, in the same way,

Thesis statements and argumentative essays.
I share almost all the same ideas for personal statements with my students. Too many freeze on the intro so I frequently recommend getting into the body first and finishing with intro and conclusion. I tell them I expect to see proper nouns in their essays, the more the merrier, as they indicate some specific tangible detail.
I appreciate the brainstorming part of your video. Do you have any vids or thoughts on planning and outlining a 5 paragraph analysis essay?
