Train Plowing Dirt and Grading Work - Rare Track work equipment along the Withrow Sub-

- In order to keep the tracks and right of way in good order, railroads will sometimes use a Jordan Spreader to reprofile the ballast and dirt along the tracks. This plows, and pushes, the ballast to the sides so the tracks drain properly so the track stays in better shape longer. Seeing this type of operation is pretty rare!
We first see them working near 37th Ave NE in Minneapolis at the top of Shoreham Hill. This was the Soo Line's main back in the day, and was once double tracked. Pushing the Soo spreader is a Canadian Pacific SD30C-ECO. The spreader itself is powered by a Detroit Diesel, and has a distinct sound to it. After making a few passes, we'll head down the line to Johnson St NE. We'll get to see it up close, and make a few passes. Additionally, the drone will provide us with a birds eye view, and we can see its massive hydraulic arms extended as it passes. The sheer power it takes to dig into the ground, push, and profile the ROW is amazing... One REALLY cool result of this was seeing where ties of the second main used to be. It looks like they just tore out main track two....although that's been gone for over 30 years!

I love the sound of the Detroit diesel ripping away to power the hydraulics.
You have to love the sound of a Detroit Diesel screaming at full RPM providing the hydraulic power for the Jordan Spreader.
No you don’t. Worst sound on the planet.
Around here when you see one of theses working it usually means they are trying to make a line look good for a sale. Good video!
I have never seen this before. Thank you for showing this!
Gotta keep that water away from the ties even though they are coated. Proper drainage is a very important thing on railroads
Glad that you enjoyed it! This was a first for me as well, and had work ran late, I would have missed seeing this! It was sheer luck that I came across it when I saw a track block on ATCS show up, and checked it out.
shows how much power just 1 engine has
Nailed it!! It takes a lot of power to move all that dirt. Thank you for the comment, and watching!
Awesome Work on the Intstate Lets Do More
Neat stuff! It's more rare to catch a Jordan Spreader playing in the dirt than it is play in the snow. And as another one of your commenters said, it was originally designed as a dirt mover and trencher. That SD30C-ECO sure looks cool too. Not a unit I get to see here in Arizona. And that horn at the end, sounds like an old single chime Leslie, is my guess. Like I said at the beginning, neat stuff!
I have never seen this kind of a thing in my life. Many thanks for sharing this.
This is one the coolest train videos that I have even seen!
May 2-stroke diesels live forever!!!
That’s a rare catch!
Absolutely the best video of this type of operation I have seen !!! Great action of a spreader working hard. Thanks. James.
Wow that’s amazing.. that’s spreads the rock so much
Nice Overhead views. Thanks
Glad you liked it, and thanks for watching!
@@SD457500 Question...where was this footage taken?
@@general5104 All locations are listed in each scene, and in the start of this video. This was shot in NE Mpls, MN on the CP Withrow Sub, at various crossings.
ooh i wanna look for that plow this winter 🥶❄️😀😁
You and me both! I want to get drone video of a train busting through snow drifts; that would be a sight!
Wow you shot some great footage both on the tripod and with your drone. It was smart to put your bug on the bottom of the screen too and I also appreciate the location lower third. I like to know where these get shot. I've never seen this type of spreading or re-profiling before. Thanks.
I love these work trains M. O. W . I have something similar to this Bachmann Spectrum has a M.O.W. not SOO LINE but CP RAIL. Excellent video.👋👋👋👋👋👍✅👍 Another 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🎥
I had never seen or known that Rare Track work equipment!!, thank you for sharing it with us👌😉
Kind regards from Mexico.
Nice! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching, and its great to hear you enjoyed it!
amazing machines tremendous power to push dirt like that
THAT WAS A GREAT VIDEO. THANKS FOR ALL THE TIME AND EFFORT.........
never knew it was more than a snow remover! Thats awesome I wonder why this is not used more often it seems like it works so well ive seen many places near me that would drain so much better after a pass with this machine.
Great point, and question with this! I bet it takes a lot of planning, and labor, to make happen. Its a pretty versatile machine!
Impressive and very interesting, thanks for sharing this.
Awesome catch. 👍
Wow, that was awesome!
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed seeing this neat operation!
Are you the upper or lower jaw tooth?
This is an awesome railroad video .
I know where that is.. That was cool. thanks for sharing
Interesting to see it plowing something other than snow. Love those flared radiators on the ECO also!
Same here, and it was so neat to watch! Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for the comment.
More TC&W Videos please! That railroad has so much video potential west of glencoe!
Thanks for the comment! All in time, I hope to get out that way sometime soon.
awesome video, keep them coming.
WOW what a machine
Using a snow plow for gravel. Nice.
Wow, very good video. I didn’t know they used the snow plows for that to
What a wonderfulllll horn on the jordan😭
Worked a jorden spreader in Indiana after the blizzard of 78
So. If this wasn't for improving drainage, I'd say this was union busy work.
Merhaba çok güzel bir tasarım olmus. Güzel bir. İşçilik. Yapıyorsunuz. Harikasınız.
8:00 all the 3rd shifters are awake now hehehe.
Ha ha ha ha, pretty much! I guess they had to make sure the crossing was clear. :p
Very interesting
Are they going to lay a second track alongside or is it just to keep the track side neat and tidy? It looks to be very wide on one side compared to the other and I guess new stone has been positioned by an earlier train at great expense. I have never seen this being done in any of the many countries I have travelled to and worked in. They just let the side be and spray weedkiller and chop back overhanging branches. Thank you for uploading this.
Beyond awesome. One Subscribe button smashed
Glad that you enjoyed the video! Thanks for the sub, and watching!
Very Nice video..👏👏👏👌
Old 2 stroke just talkin 👍
A good old Detroit Diesel at that!
Jordon Spreader? 🤔 Probably it's about this Special vehicle connected to this EMD SD45 Locomotive.
I hope somebody help me. Anyway, it's a very nice video, definitely.
If you guys think this is cool, I need to find you some footage of our Aussie track machines.
SOO 300289 attached to 5042 Canadian Pacific
Amazing what a little duct tape can do!
I've never seen one of them that's cool
Keeps popping up, so it is watched many times …
I hope you enjoyed it! Thank you for the comment!
Excepcional guerreiro!!
Thank you very much! This was really neat to see, and quite the sight.
Wonder how long it's been since that plow has been used for it's origional purpose? Many places that used to need those things routinely in winter really haven't in years. But that looks like a great alternate use. Faster than a road grader it seems.
Funny enough its the other way around. Jordan spreaders were originally built to grade right of ways and clear drainage ditches, eventually transitioning to putting a plow on the front to make it a dual purpose machine for grading and plowing snow.
Excelente, ^^
Probably needs the weight with those 4 guys in the cab.
Right of way?!? They plowed a wide enough swath to put in a complete secondary line. Why?
This used to be a double tracked main; they were grading for better drainage, and to improve the ROW. Thanks for watching!
Interesting... But the area on which the engine is working appears quite large with respect to the single track, about twice as large as what is needed in the EU...
I used to live in the area and it was awesome to all the activity. This use to be double tracked
Soo Line? My Grand Dad worked there.
What's the purpose of that? Besides clearing shrubs weeds and other debris?
In this case it was for better drainage, and it can also be used to help profile the ballast around the tracks. Thanks for watching!
Nossa que legal muito bom
Could someone explain the purpose of keeping a gap so wide both sides of the track clear please. Are there to be more tracks laid?
Thank you for the comment, and watching! This used to be double tracked until 1986, thus why the right of way is so wide. They are pushing the rock/dirt so far back for better drainage, and allowing ample room for the water to flow away.
@@SD457500 Thanks for response. Ive never seen them so wide before. Guess you live and learn a little more each day 🙂. Thanks.
YA CP 5042. I have seen you around.
This state is doing great!!!
Cars waiting at the crossing where somewhat dismayed.
That is accurate! There was a lady in the car right behind me who was asking how long they were going to be there for. Thanks for the comment, and watching.
🚂😃 all aboard everyone!!
Im somewhat of a novice but Could this be a sign that they are prepping to put a second rail line in on this section or is there much more in depth preparation for that and this is just for distributing ballast and keeping ROW clear? Very cool video never the less I've never seen this happen before!
Thank you for watching, and the comment! This work was mainly being done for improved drainage along the right of way. As far as I know, there are no plans to put the second main back in.
Maria Virgínia
Nossa que legal bacana viu amei viu
7:48 his horn reminds me of Fozzie Bear........"Waka Waka"
Why did they plow the tracks
They did this to allow for better drainage, and profile the right of way. Thanks for watching!
👍👍👍
Одлична машина!
blasting their horn, , the traffic been sitting there swearing at it for five minutes
If they had a clue what they are doing they could be reclaiming it instead of throwing it in the weeds 20ft away.
They were doing this for better drainage, not reclamation in this instance. Thanks for watching!
Great to see CP keeping up the Right of way... and really neat to see a Jordan spreader in action !!
Hello jo bot
How are you doing hun
Thank you for the kind comment! It was really cool to see, and amazing how easily it moved so much Earth!
This is the best Jordon Spreader video by far on UA-cam!
Thank you for the kind words, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!! :D
From the UK. Would love to spend a month in the US Rail fanning and chasing equipment like this. Fantastic footage, many thanks Sir,
What's wild about Jordan Spreaders was that they were originally designed to do this, MOW work especially with ballest. It wasn't until Jim Jordan on the Espee who figured they would be really useful with snow in the Sierras and thus what we get today.
Nailed it! Many people don't know that, and its neat to see all of the uses that this piece of has. Thanks for watching!
I worked for Pandrol Jackson in 1999,which was bought out by Harsco Corp in 2000. The shop in Syracuse N.Y . was building a Plow /Ballast Spreader for the Alaskan Rail Road . The shop was using prints from one of the original plows they had built in the 40s . From what I remember I was told Pandrol Jackson use to be Jackson -Jordon at one time . I believe the Plow was one of the last projects that was done at the Syracuse shop , before they closed .
Great footage of the spreader in action. Really enjoyed it!!
Thank you for the kind words, and I'm glad that you enjoyed it. While I've heard of them doing this before, this was my first encounter, and it was neat.
I'm completely against vandalism, but it would be really funny if across the front someone put ""
I have never seen a machine like that. What a deal, great video. I suppose it works well in the winter as well.
Definitely a 2-stroke Detroit Diesel powering the spreader hydraulics.
Oh yeah! I could listen to that all day long!
I was thinking it was a Detroit power the hydraulics, but wasn't sure. It sounded GOOD. :D Thanks for the comment, and watching!
Nothing else sounds like a 2 stroke Detroit, same can be said of the EMD 567,645 and 710 all GM 2 stroke as well.
Love how that old Jordan Spreader still has some Soo Line markings! Great footage btw!
Glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for the comment! I heard it's former Milwaukee Road too, so think of where it's been over the years.
A lot of RR equipment is so identified for business or tax reasons. That's why you see NYC and PRR equipment on the NS and CSX.
Very therapeutic to watch! Nicely filmed as usual.
Glad you enjoyed it, and I appreciate the kind words! This was so neat to see in person, and a fairly rare catch too!
I like your skill, keeping your drone out of the trees and the power lines! Excellent footage
Does your handle show that you like SD45's?, or is that just a coincidence? Have you worked on them or ran them, or just a Rail Fan that knows what he likes...?
Nice to hear that Jimmy sing it’s song 😃
That's an excellent video! I really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing these actions. ;)
Yup saw the stains in the ballast of the old second track coming back to the surface.
The greatest country in the world and this is our hi tech train system. Other countries have 300 mph trains.
Thank you for the comment, and watching. While this isn't high tech equipment, you need to realize this is a freight route, and not for high speed rail. Even along high speed routes, these use machines just like this to perform the same work such as grading.
Did you know this kind of work was going to take place, or were just lucky enough to be around when it was underway? Interesting video -- I've never seen that kind of work done with a winter plow.
I happened to come across them doing this, and had all of my camera gear on me. They had worked a portion of the track earlier in the week, and I was hoping they might do more. Everything came together perfectly by chance. Thanks for the comment, and watching!
Thanks for the video! As far as you know, is it the same Jordan Spreader that they use on snow, or is it a different type used for plowing?
The same equipment is used for clearing snow.
Thanks for the comment! They do indeed use this for both applications, but this is the first time I've seen it used for grading work.
@@SD457500 As a locomotive engineer, I've been on work trains using a spreader in all seasons. They're a very effective tool for ditching as well.
@@thomasdupee1440 Must be a neat experience to be running with one of those!
@@SD457500 My entire career was a neat experience.
I lived across the street from the New York Central Yard in Detroit, and they would run a scary flame thrower that burned up the weeds along the track.
Seriously on of the coolest videos i have ever seen!!!!!Thanks for posting!!!!!
Glad to hear that you enjoyed it, and thank you for the kind words! :D It was a really neat operation to witness.
I'm absolutely amazed by this. I had to hit pause so I could grab a drink and some pretzels so I could sit back and watch this. I'm a bulldozer operator so I wanted to see if I could pick up some more tips
Glad you enjoyed the video! The video hardly does it justice; it was SO cool to watch in person.
Nice video. I managed to watch the WC 315 do some ditching work some 30 years ago, well before I go my video camera.
thats quite a plow wagon there.sounds like an old 2 stroke detroit powering the hydrolic pump.
Boy I love jordan spreaders. Saw one in south dakota that sat in watertown. It had a build date of 09/1923
Every new thing I learn about railroads is cooler than the last. I mean, look at that thing!
Great video, by the way!
The NYS&W once used a Jordan spreader to push trees and weeds away from a long dormant main line. They were bringing the line back into service. This was back in the late 1980s.
I now know what I need to get a smooth driveway and be able to plow the snow quicker.🤣
Great catch!
I mean, imagine how FAST that would plow a driveway and all the snow it could move. Thanks for the comment, and watching!
Super cool video. Dont get to see much of this work done.
Canada does it Best "Santa's Sled", Their the True North
I bet that spreader has skinned lots of cables in it's life.
Hi from NZ,
