  • Who said you need to spend a lot of money for a working rifle? I've got a centerfire Carcano here that works perfectly well for only $100! I even show you one that I spent $25 on...but it's less than perfect and I'll show you why. Carcano rifles don't have the best reputation among gun enthusiasts but are they really that bad? Well, come see for yourself. We'll also have a look at the different 6.5 ammo available for this bargain bolt action. Thanks for watching and subscribing. Excellent video. Several years ago to found a local dealer with a shipment of Mausers and Nagants for sale at $50 each. I still have 2 of the Mausers and one Nagant carbine. I sold the rest to friends for what I had in them. I can't remember how many that was. Enough to raise my wife's eye brows.....and voice.

You might have what we call a Cooey Carcano up here in Canada. Sold by Sears in 6.5x54 with supposedly lighter loaded ammo. Barrel set back into it's own shank as a stub and re-worked with a set trigger by Cooey. If the barrel shank (when taken out of the stock) has a set-aside in it, there you be. Also famous for splitting through that nice thin wrist lol.
Anyway, another fine video, Sir. Always glad to see you posting a new one.

Thanks for sharing. This is the first overview I've seen on the Carcano. I've had a 6.5 x 55 Swede for about 20 years and that had been the only 6.5 I've had until a recent purchase of the Creedmoor. I'll have to keep my eyes open for a Carcano. I have several variations on Mausers.

Never had one but I have four 6.5x55 rifles one very interesting one is a Argentine model 91 rifle in 6.5 x55 re-barreled from 7.65 X53 .Man does it shoot first time I shot it you could cover five shots with a dime at 100 yards not kidding. We put a dime over it and it covered the group.

Back in the seventies, and maybe even earlier, I was stationed at Fort Bragg. There was a chain department store named "Roses". They used to have a steady supply of used military weapons. Mostly WW2 era. None were more than $100.00 USD. They were all in different operational condition, but all were serviceable. I can't believe I never picked up an original M1 carbine, of which they had quite a few. Plus Garands, Mausers and other rifles from different countries.
My wife and I settled here. The gun laws got stricter, they stopped selling them or the supply ran out. Eventually, the stores closed for good. I'm sure most know that feeling of missing out on a great deal. Even if it was just a wall hanger for display purposes.

I still have mine. My sister found it in a barn when they bought the place. It was pretty ugly so I made a deer rifle out of it. I bought a 340 Savage side mount, had an old Weaver short tube scope to use, and heated up the bolt handle to bend it down. Any useless sheet metal (Folding bayonet hardware) was removed. Shot a doe with it the first time out. Instant deer gun. When I collected Arisakas, I had quite a few Japanese Carcanos in 6.5 Japanese. I am subscribed but no notification???

I can't tell you how grateful I am that someone such as yourself, being so refreshingly articulate and halcyon; is producing content for those of us that want to learn the actual characteristics of a firearm. I find so many gun videos on UA-cam to be juvenile, obnoxious, louder than necessary, and dubbed with corny rock music set to several pointless minutes of "TactiKyle" recording himself firing at something in the next frame that only comes after he's satisfied looking at himself during editing. I love that you focus on the firearm, it's qualities and give a bit of history when it applies. Keep up the great work, and thank you again for not making anyone outside of the gun community cringe at us.

One feature of the carcano few mention is the bolt head dimensions make it ideal for a few interesting conversions. One can rebarrel it for 7.62x39 (or the modern wildcats/target rounds based on that case), or .38 special/.357 magnum/.357 maximum (as a single shot).

There's quite a bit to say about carcanos. The reason they look so primitive is because they are a very early smokeless powder action, they originally came out in 1891, so compared to the contemporary mausers they really don't lack much, and in some ways are more modern. They also have an undeserved reputation for being weak, but at the end of WWII the Germans converted them to 8mm mauser and didn't have a problem with them self destructing. I have one that was converted to .35 remington by someone who was willing to dump as much money into it as a new rifle would have cost, as they went all out with a new monte carlo stock, new barrel and a complete reblue. Feeding however is less than ideal, as the action designed for long skinny bullets doesn't get along with the .35's short fat bullets.

    • @UnitedStatesOfGuns

Most of the carcanos that got converted to another caliber became either .35 rem or 7.62x39 as they have similar enough case head diameter that you don't have to modify the bolt face.

The Carcano works, and I don't understand why they have such a bad reputation for reliability. The fact that the firearm is reliable is demonstrated graphically in the killing of President Kennedy, and in the numerous studies done using the rifle to recreate those tragic shots.
I enjoyed your mentioning the Arisaka as I have a pair of Type 99's myself. One of them has been in my family since 1945, and it has an original monopod and dust cover along with the original muzzle protector. Also, neither of them are sporterized! The Japanese designed the Type 38 and Type 99 Arisaka for the jungle environment, and that makes them some of the toughest firearms ever made in my book.

I’ve heard that a lot of accuracy issues in carcanos come from it’s odd ball bore diameter. I forget the specifics but apparently the Italians used a very strange diameter compared to other 6.5s. Maybe you were using undersized bullets,

Wrong ammo. 60s commercial ammo for the 6.5 Carcino wss the wrong dia. With proper ammo I've found the rifles to be great shooters although the battle sight setting is no good for under 100 yards without some Kentucky windage

Another bolt rifle showed up the other day - bolt handle came off the bolt and the safety flopping around not doing anything. How much more off course can things get I wonder. Rifles used to be one of the few things one could count on. Thanks for the note.

Sadly, it is the consumer who drives the industry to make guns cheaper. If people want plastic stocks then the industry will give it to them. If they don't care about more then if the gun goes bang then the industry will make such guns. On the flip side of that coin is that if the consumer wants guns that are more like fine furniture the industry will provide those too.

"Patsy" Oswald had a Carcanos in the depository. I never believed Oswald was guilty, there's pretty convincing evidence which leads me to believe he was, or, thought he was, working undercover, and he was most likely tricked into taking the position as preface to protect Kennedy as opposed to take him out with the stock Carcanos he had, which never could have made that shot - his elevated position and a moving target.
I believe, based on eye witness accounts, that there were multiple shooter from the rear on a rooftop and one shooter was in an underground sewer which the kill shot may have come from through the sidewalk vent at close range. Also, there was another shooter, James Files who confessed to the assassination while serving a lengthy sentence for murder.
He is very believable in my opinion, knowing specific details not released to the public as insurance against false confessions. The one detail nobody I've ever heard about knew was he left the bullet casing which he had intentionally bit down and left behind as 100% proof he was there!
Files says he was instructed to only take a shot if the assassins directly behind the car on the roof, or top floor missed, and they did miss.
Files says he was upset with himself because he had aimed at Kennedy's right eyes and missed slightly high and wide to the left!!

Hope the channel is ok with this sort of off topic comment, which came to my mind seeing the rifle here.
The stock run of the mill Carcanos were a very cheap inaccurate rifle, and the bullet didn't match the gun, which is a detail we don't hear in the official narrative!

Hello Jack - That's an interesting video. Many viewers sent me information on the assassination. So many things seem improbable or impossible; on the other hand, history shows that many improbable/impossible things happen. I visited Dealey Plaza a few years ago - it is or was (at the time of my visit) - surprisingly unchanged from the footage of the tragedy. The road - Elm St. was busy and there were people going about their business as well as people clearly visiting the place due to what happened there. I walked all around and saw what I could. I'm still thinking about what I saw. Thanks for being here and sharing your thoughts and the link.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns Thank you brother. There's an awful lot of theories and opinions as to what went down that fateful day.
I firmly believe it was a combination of LBJ who by all accounts was an absolute monster as a child, then as a youth, which people who were closest to him such as his mistress, he was a violent arrogant real racist and along with George Bush Sr who absolutely hated the Kennedys.
Bush Sr was caught on film outside the depository on the day of the murder, and denied being there all his life.
I believe LBJ was helped by the C.I.A. - leadership of the secret service, who incredibly called off Kennedy's car agent just before the car had to slow down to enter the curve where the shots started.
Watch the film you can see the agent throwing his arms in the air when he was ordered twice to stand down! Then, of course, the mob who felt cheated after helping him win the election and were very happy to help him "lose" the position!
Jackie later stated that she knew it was LBJ even as she stood beside LBJ and his wife as he took the oath of office on the airplane. Jackie still had the blood stained cloths on, and said she intentionally kept it on through the ceremony to let LBJ and the world know that she knew exactly was responsible!
That was one strong, classy woman!
So it was part inside and part contract help!
We may never know the details, but right now would be a great time for all of us to calm down, take a deep collective breath and contemplate that horrific day and how America lost her innocence in a single day.
      Take care brother

Many years ago, a guy came into my gunsmithing shop with a Carcano rifle. It had a "sewer-pipe" barrel. I told him it was too far gone to clean up, and it would cost less to just rebarrel it. He didn't want to spend that much money on what was then a $40 rifle. So, I gave him $20 for it, and rebarreled it for myself, in 7.62x39. It's truly a sweet shooter. I scoped it using a side-mount intended for a Savage model 340, which fit the receiver contour perfectly. So now, I have a sweet little brush gun with nearly zero recoil, but can still take Deer-sized game.

Well, not EVERYBODY is familiar with 6.5mm rounds. I've never even fired one. Despite having shot a variety of firearms, I haven't come close to seeing or shooting all the calibers that are out there. I have extensive ballistic tables for most rounds ever made, but I would only claim familiarity with those I've actually shot, and that's a minority of the just the rounds you can still find ammo for. I just never had a wild hair to buy any of the 6.5s out there, and the ammo seems neither readily available nor cheap. None of my shooting buddies has a 6.5. One of the cool things about channels like yours is that they can familiarize and inform without the need to find and fire every variety of ammo (and the guns to fire it) out there, which is prohibitively expensive for most of us.

In the 2011 Civil War in Lybia (an Italian colony till 1947) about 10% of the local rebel-forces (those that weren’t getting modern assault rifles from foreign actors) were using pre-WW2 Carcano rifles. In many families those rifles had been used for hunting and such over decades by different generations. After WW2 the Carcanos were laying around everywhere, left by Italian troops that operated in the region during the war. And then there were all the guns that were left by the many thousands of Italian colonials who had to leave in a hurry when Lybia became a fully independent Kingdom in 1951.
In one particular mountain region where the conditions are quite harsh and the locals are avid hunters who knew the terrain well, most of the rebels were carrying their own old hunting rifle. And decimated the well-equipped troops one by one, shot by shot. That’s all it takes. Don’t forget that.

It took a great president getting killed to run up the sales on these mutt rifles....Just my opinion. I took in 3 Carcanos on a truck deal, just not a big fan, and I traded them off quickly. Any of the German or Spanish Mausers, Russian Nagant, 1903-A3, or even a cheap used Savage Axis or cheap used spray painted Mossberg Patriot/Remington 783 seem built better than a Carcano. Strictly opinion. If you’ve got a Carcano and like it, disregard. Continue forth. 2 eachyzone...😞
