The importance of civics lessons

  • Since civics was dropped from school curriculums, awareness of our constitutional government (and our participation in it) has gone downhill. (Only about 25% of Americans can name the three branches of government, and 10% think that Judge Judy is on the Supreme Court,) Mo Rocca talks with Supreme Court Associate Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Neil Gorsuch about promoting civics education. Rocca also talks with Eric Liu, who created Citizen University to help cultivate the values of good citizenship; and with Chicago social studies teacher Mary Ellen Daneels, who uses what passes for politics these days as object lessons in how NOT to be a good citizen.

    These classes are very important. I have only missed voting 3 times in my llife - I was born in Cuba, communist country. Having a vote is a wonderful right.

    WTF!!??? What is the purpose of education if not to make sure every citizen of our nation is aware of how things get done? This must include government, economics, environment, health, relationships, etc. etc. etc.! I'm sorry, I had no idea things had gotten this bad. My daughter graduated in 2005 with an excellent and comprehensive education in all of these areas.

    I dislike almost everything about Justice Gorsuch's politics, his legal views, and his social agenda. Except Civics. Mo conducted an interview which emphasized how much Justices Sotomayor and Gorsuch respect the rule of law, the separation of powers, and the value of informed debate. I have a new respect for Justice Gorsuch from this interview. I also believe we need to be teaching Civics as a mandatory class nowadays, even if it kicks an elective off the schedule for Juniors.

      And I feel the same about Sotamayor. I think her legal views and partisan votes are repugnant. I have found new interest in her want for civics class.

      So it's especially galling to hear Gorsuch talk about civics and then engage in the most reprehensible, corrupt, unconstitutional and partisan conduct as part of the right-wing majority currently legislating from the bench. He and the so-called "conservative" majority have been undoing established precedent, seeking every opportunity to impose their social and political agenda on the country, undermining fundamental rights and even granting virtually unlimited immunity to a US president in a way that is totally contrary to the Constitution and the intentions of the founders. All this with the pretense of being originalist or textualists--a dishonest scam they use to legislate instead of objectively and fairly interpreting the Constitution and law.

    IMO, this is why Civics went away. Understanding “how” government is structured and “how” the systems work is tedious in the extreme. Understanding “why” government and governmental systems are structured the way they are is critical. It’s in the “why” that people are exposed to human behavior, history, corruption, and trade-offs...as they relate to government. That is what citizens need to understand.

    Why were civics classes ever removed from the schools? The functions of our intricate government were given much thought and argument by the founders of our country and are extremely important today. Voting is also very important. If I could go and stand in line to vote while in labor, giving birth 3 hours later then anyone can do it and should. Voter ID laws are deliberate attempts to discourage voting and that is a danger to our lives.

    In high school my favorite subject was history. We had world history freshman year, European history sophomore year, American history junior year, and I took AP government and politics.
    AP government taught the constitution, the 3 branches of gov , the executive administration and role of Congress. Since there was only 1 25 person class for 500 some students you had to be accepted. Sadly, they had another government class not as in depth but since it wasn't required to graduate most didn't take it bc they wanted an early dismissal.

    If you want to increase voter turnout and lower voter apathy then we need to reform ballot access laws and support nationwide ranked choice voting.
    This would allow for more third party and independent participation and offer a more diverse field of options for the voter.
    The two party system is one major factor in the decline of the quality of people we gave serving us in the halls of power.

      Schools have now focused education around the STEM programs (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Technology is advancing and the job force is now adding hundreds of brand new jobs each year that revolve around STEM. Sadly, this focus has pushed the once heavily focused civics and democracy classes to secondary subjects while classes like Algebra, Statistics, Engineering, and Arts classes are classes that are required in order to graduate. My high school required a single semester of government, which is even more than some schools have required their students to take.

      Other countries do it with mixed results. Brazil has compulsory voting; they just elected someone arguably worse than Trump. On the other hand, Australia has compulsory voting, it hasn't been too bad for them

    • @cdgh99
      @cdgh99 5 років тому

      @@asphyxiafeeling Yes it doesn't necessarily give you better politicians but it is more democratic. The politicians have to work for everyone not just those who are likely to vote for them. Younger and poorer people are more likely not to vote. The political conversation in America would unquestionably be different if the politicians were working to win those poorer, younger voters.

      I tend to believe that it would only make things worse. If you are not informed enough to make a decision then you really should not take that away from those that do. Rather, I think that we should encourage everyone to be engaged and point out that politics can be very interesting.
