Yup, a custom wooden box pot is probably the way to go for this big boy, it will allow you to bury it a bit deeper to develop fine surface roots. Given one or two seasons to gain energy and develop more feeder roots, you'll be able to cut most ugly roots and the result should be incredible hahaha. Good job and video as always!
Thank you! I honestly couldn't believe what a deal I found that day. A lot of people who I showed pictures to were just appalled that I hacked it way down like that, lol. But that's bonsai for ya. Sometimes you gotta break some hearts.
Hi from Indiana. This video was amazing. Sure am enjoying watching the process of this tree 🌴. I remember how huge it was when you took out of your 🚙. I was stunned that you cut it all up !!! This will be interesting watching it grow ❤
Be nice to follow this. Not sure how I would tackle it myself but if I was daring I would try to thin out the potatoe roots and I agree with you that it is probably best to take it tad easy and do it step by step in a longer perspective.
It was a beast of a project! I think I started this about 2 or 3 weeks ago. It's just now starting to push out some new growth, so that's good. I was slightly nervous at first, thinking I may have over done it.
This tree needs a lot of space so you can do drastic cuts every two years or so. Don't buy a to small pot for it, it will really slow down the regrowth. You could have also used your repot tub or your washing tub for now.
I like that black pot. That’s a lot of crazy roots underneath it😮. I’ve been busy getting set up around the nursery . I got alot of new stuff for sale this year, and others to grow out for next year. I totally want to start some bonsais soon. I’ve got the itch for it lol. Yah there was a lot of thick potatoe roots in there. That’s a cool project looking forward to seeing the progression.
nice work mike! this one is cool.. i have a hard time finding pots too. i cut those black growers pots in half sometimes. made a few wood pots also. they work well. big clay or mica bonsai training pots are pricey
Thanks Mike! I'm kicking around .asking a custom pot from cement. I've done a few so far. One turned out great! One shattered instantly, and the third is cracked here and there and barely hanging on. So a big custom pot might be a lot of time and effort for nothing, depending on how it turns out. But if it turns out good, might save me a few hundred $$$!
@@BonsaiBoise More letting you know about things I just learned. When doing trunk splits or fusion of ficus (my ficus is growing!) have you tried vet tape? Sticks to itself, gives, and breathes. I broke a finger and the doc gave me some.
@@stevevaughn2040 no, haven't tried The vet tape yet but lately the Teflon tape has been working pretty good for me. Especially if I wrap a little wire around that and keep my eye on it. The wire will still cut into the bark even with the Teflon tape on there so got to be a little careful

Thanks Mary! I'll do some updates on it in the near to mid future to show how it's coming along. So far so good though. New growth coming out already.
@@BonsaiBoise wow that’s fantastic. New growth means you did it RIGHT ❤️
@@maryperrysmith5815 Thank goodness. For a minute there I was slightly nervous that I did all that work and spent $100 for nothing, lol.
I actually quite like the way the potato roots look in this pot. Hope this tree survives this repotting!
So far so good! It's just now starting to push out some new growth so I think I'm in the clear. I was a bit nervous for a minute.

Man, I'd be so tempted to cut off several of the crossing and potato roots.....its looking good so far...👍👍
Thanks! And yeah I was tempted to do the same, both for looks and to get it to fit inside a pot!

I would take the big roots and repot and have a big new tree
In the end it'll probably be something between a bonsai and a house plant.

You could get a half barrel to plant it in
I'm leaning towards making a custom pot from cement
This is gonna be fun to watch you turn this into a bonsai. Very imaginative.
It's bouncing back real well! It's shooting out new branches all over the place
Wow mantap hadir yimak👍👍👍

Cough cough oil pan
I can't remember if I tried that or not. I only have like 20 of them, would t hurt trying.
