Railroad Crossing Gates Malfunction Takes Camera Up In The Air

- This is a video I made at a railroad crossing that was malfunctioning. The crossing gates where going up and down every minute. I reported them to the railroad company and waited for over 1 hour for them to come. As I was waiting I placed my camera at the end of the gate around the last flasher light so the gate took my camera up in the air recording then when it came down I removed it. It shows an up in the air view what is like to be at the end of a crossing gate. First of a kind film on youtube.
Thanks for the input. The CSX worker told me that the fan unit stopped working inside the control box causing a over heating. When he opened the box a few minutes later it stopped then he repaired the cooling fan.
LOL I know I am a big idiot but I love it!! That's why some of my movies are funny as He--
Hey, at least you know how to have fun no matter how old you are! Learned that from my family!
I have done some things that rail fanners would think that is illegal or trespassing but I do it a lot with workers present but they don't want to be shown on camera.
LOL He'd probably break it! Better yet, knock the whole signal over! (Yay, another signal to his collection!)
LOL Thanks but I wasn't worried.. It's only a hundred dollar camera and I got a new one since. That old camera is now my stunt camera. LOL
Who does that alan?
I will be 49 December 15th and still act like a teenager. I never want to grow old.
Yes I did and met the guy there. He said the control box was to hot and had to open the doors to cool it down and the gates stopped after 5 minutes.
Your lucky the camera didn't fall off the gate
Yes
Sorry to ask Alan, but what kind of camera do you use? 'Cause I've noticed on some of your videos, that it makes the EXACT same noises and does the exact same things whenever the zoom feature is used, static occurs, etc. like my camera.
Thanks!! I have a video for everyday this week lined up.
Aw, man! That's the exact same camera I have! Cool! I actually got it for Christmas last year, and have since taken a TON of videos and images, though I haven't uploaded any onto UA-cam other than my BNSF one.
You are amazing 🤩
That looks like fun for the camera
Teacher: hey you define gravity
Me: how mam?
Teacher: I dunno you think about it
Me: can I put my camera on railroad crossing gate mam?
Teacher: of your sure ok just ask Mr. Alan Smith to come with you
A day in the life of a railroad crossing gate
Fablewolf lol a day in the life of a railroad crossing gate 🚂🚂🚂🚂
2:18 thank you gate :crossing signal yw! *gate rises* lol
But hey, at least you got something fun to do while waiting for a train!
The one across the street had an e bell. You could not hear it because the traditional bell was louder
Stupid orange: oh melineum force what are you doing?
This did because I took a risk of the gate not comming back down so I could retrieve my camera. LOL
Fantastic stuff here Alan. I stopped in Sanford on 3-29-12. Just a short visit at the historic Lake Monroe Bridge that is now a fishing pier. Take care.
I ahve to ssay that this was a Great idea!! The gate didn't look that high but when it is up there, it is really high up. That was funny at 2:18
This crossing must've been pulling an April fools joke...
You timed it perfect at 5:24! :D
Thanks for posting!!!
It held on by it's strap around the last flashing light at the end of the gate. If the gate didn't come back down there are secret ways of getting them to come back down. LOL
How the heck do you time that thing right!?
Imagine if the gates went back up and shut off so your camera was just stuck up there and you had to tell one of the CSX workers to activate the signal so you can get it back down 😱 That would be embarrassing tbh
Thank you Like I said to a lot of these people need to read the description. A lot of times I have a rail worker around but I cannot put them in my video because of there jobs do not allow them to participate in the films while they are working.
This video was very funny. Cool how you timed the gates going down too lol
Not for my heart... I thought I was going to lose it. LOL
It was a one time thing but everybody takes a risk just that one time for the perfect shot.
Thanks!! I haven't heard from you in awhile?? Going up north in July for a week. Lot's of filming then.
I do this all the time, making the gates come down by placing a metal bar across the two tracks, It turns all the signal lights in the intersection to red and backs up traffic!
I still have fun lowering them with a metal pole drives the public crazy
+Jay P. You can have even more fun when you get caught.
LOL me too it's funny to see the cars stop for no reason, that and I just think it's fun for some reason
ITT: dickheads.
Because it's so hot sometimes the boards in the box get so hot because the fans sometimes go out
Wow. That's cool I picked a crossing that's 70 miles away from my home and you live on that street. Yes I would call it in.
That was an old camera of mine but the new one does not do that that I don't notice. It's a Samsung HD 5X paid $59.00 at Best Buy but I don't think they make that brand anymore.
Imagine they stopped!! OH NO!! Time to get the copper pipe or jumper cables out!! LOL LOL LOL
I was worried about your camera, to haha.
Funny when you timed the gates going down! XD
I'm going to California and Arizona by Friday! Glad my step-dad is able to use his vacation time finally (being military and all).
I noticed that the one gate you put the camera on looks like the one down the street from my house. That crossing is all safe tran. It has an M bell on it which I never noticed before. I know there is an E bell then next street over. I think I didn't realize that there was an M bell on that crossing down the street because I don't think it works. I can hardly hear the E bell from my house if I were to be outside. But I never recall hearing the M bell. So I was wondering if I should call it in?
You have powers to move the crossing gate
LOL Yes I have done this. Also I used speaker wire. Touched each rail and it worked
Why wasn't the camera stable?
Because it was only hanging on by its strap
Oh. I heard it somewhere but I should try what you said LOL. Thanks for the info.
Those poor people who loved around that crossing having to hear it go off every mineuts
Great panorama, Alan
at least it had classic belltones ,not those fake annoying digital dings :P those would drive me crazy going off all day
Thanks!! LOL I know I do the silliest things just to make people laugh.
if that camera wasn't strapped it'll be like cannonball
Haha nce! It's good you reported it to the railroad it helps them out a ton, it does take a while sometimes though
Well, he wasn't trespassing, nor was he damaging equipment now, was he?
view was great
You do need to re read my comment, first off, I didnt say he was trespassing, I said most railfans do, and I also did not say he damaged anything, I said he tampered with it, by putting the camera on it,I mean this user no disrespect, and infact he has great videos, one of which I have put in my favorites. Point is, when I see something wrong, I am going to say something, cause I dont want the railfan hobby to be made illegal due to railfans abusing our hobby.
Wow' that is a serious problem' i'm sure you notefied CSX of this dangerous malfuntion. Imagine if the gates and/or the signal did not respond to an on coming train and stayed raised up...Scary thought.
??????? Activation box?? That's on small model railroads. Not on these big trains. Just place a wire or pipe connecting both tracks and it will send them down. Where Ever You Heard That Is Not True. It has to do with current.
Lol 3:21 bye bye!!!! Love it hahaha
It's ok none taken. LOL LOL LOL I am used to it because I love doing comic stuff.
I was lucky buddy and I took a chance!!
How did the gate hold the camera without it falling off? Man if I did that, and the gates started working again and they never came back down, well, that would just suck for my camera. Still cool idea. Funny too.
I put in on the end and the stap got stuck and it took it up 3 times before I could retrieve it.
How did you get that camera to stay on the gates i thought it was gonna fall off right away i was like dont do it lol!!
LOL... yeah, I volunteer at the Painesville Depot in Painesville Ohio, he cant say anything to us over there because the gates is nearly 1/4 mile away and he will be on our property to bitch at us. it would get interesting to say the least.
Sounds like that guy didn't get sex from the wife. I would have kicked his ass. LOL
I always report when equipment goes all loopy. I have NS & CSX contact info on my phone, just for this case, and to report trespassers.
Why do you have NS and CSX contact info on your phone? I've never heard of anybody having railroad companies contact information. Plus there's literally a plaque at every railroad crossing that has the contact information
April Fools -from CSX.
Yes, it was on April fools day.
LOL I am going up to Jersey next month to chase trains and ride rollercoasters
LMFAO LOL LOL LOL Way To Go!!!
I know Everyone does something stupid and it's not going to stop me. LOL LOL LOL
bugs in the system??? i remember seeing the same thing years ago ,and it was caused from a big dead juicy bug causing a short circuit
totally agreed. he had a rhaspy voice from drinking it sounded.
Wait if this was shot April 1 it was a joke set up by the rail company
Well all you have to do is walk down the tracks and step on the activation box or pile bricks on it so the gates stay down. Too bad it's illegal or I would do that as a prank every day. LOL!
Yeah, just ignore them! I just can't deal with people like him, therefore it's hard for me to do so! =P
Run after a train in a diaper GOO GOO CHOO CHOO Coming soon
I only did it with a worker present fixing the crossing
What was wrong with the crossing
Daniel b malfunctions
Daniel b a fan failed and the Florida climate overheated the relay shed, causing a malfunction each minute 🚂🚂
Hope your trip goes well. Call me. Let's do the bridge again. Do you know where the owner of the property lives?
Bingo I go there tonight
Cool!
Tomorrow Its The Amtrak Train Stopping At That Crossing With Flares
How do they keep railroad crossing on and off?
When a train crosses over the detector circuit it activates the signals and I believe that if the train stops moving the detector circuits will eventually time out the signals causing them to deactivate in case the train hasn't reached the crossing yet so that cars can keep going until the signals are activated again
As long as the train continues to cross the detector circuits the signals will stay activated unless they malfunction or something but they're not supposed to do that
your a 49 year old train chaser today!
You're*
Did you call CSX?
+Millenniumforce what would you do if you lost your camera
+Bo Platt buy anotyher one but i would just make the gates come back down by touching a jumper cable on each rail
+Millenniumforce Tampering with crossing signals is illegal, not to mention downright stupid. Suppose you did that and the line is signaled. The system could assume the track is occupied and halt all rail traffic nearby. And why? Because someone had to attach their camera to a lowered crossing gate on a malfunctioning signal and use jumper cables to get it back.
+Joe I like how all you people think I do illegal shit when I don't. how people jump to conclusions by watching the video without asking. There was a worker there trying to fix the crossing and I asked if I could put the camera on the end of the gate to get a birds eye view of what it is like and he said as long as I did not put him on camera I could do it. So nothing was illegal here.
Millenniumforce I think you misunderstood what my point was. First, I want you to know I love your videos, especially the ones with the studio audience laughter. You are extremely creative. I don't believe putting your camera on the gate was a problem. Someone asked you what you would do if the gate did not come back down and you were not able to retrieve your camera. You answered that you would activate the crossing signals by using jumper cables. That is what I wrote was illegal and did not care for. Whether you were joking about the jumper cables or not,
older railfans like us have to set an example for the rest and even the suggestion of tampering with crossing signals was/is unwise. I don't believe my criticism is unreasonable in that regard.
+Joe OK sorry about that. but I was only kidding about the jumper cables. I might have done that when I was a teenager but not now at 51. lol
Were you ever hugged as a child, or know what the word "fun" means?
LOL Yes I did
BINGO!
Jumper cables :)
Lol. Neat, but also illegal. Just be careful. I have had malfunctions in N fl occur while railfanning,
what’s wrong with the crossing?
What's wrong with the crossing gate
Man, what will you do next? XD!
Wow, glad the line was dead, or else you would've been screwed!
*This is my fuckin camera now*
yes to both, but I also respect the rules of the railroad, cause I do not want to give a bad name to railfans. Most railfans like to tresspass and do things that they are not supposed to, and I am going to correct it when I see it, cause I love my hobby and respect the rail rules cause one day a railfan if going to go to far and make it a crime to railfan again.
Hahaha I bet that’s a prank since their doing it on April fools. I think there just playing with the control box making the gates go up and down
LOL LOL LOL
I hope you got insurance on your camcorder.
LOL You just stated that he wasn't doing anything wrong, yet he "did" anyway? What's with your logic here?! How is he making the hobby illegal? And you know, railfans like me consider the "hobby" as more of a "passion" than anything! Sorry for sounding off-topic here, but I've been in-love with trains since I was about 2 or 3 years old! (I'm 17 now, soon to be 18 here in December.)
WEEEEE!
How do you make gates go down with Magic
It's gate malfuction
