  • The UnrollSrf command in Rhino 3-D modeling flattens a surface or polysurface with curvature in one direction to a planar surface. This command is useful for developing trimmed polysurfaces.
To unroll a surface, you can:
    Select surfaces or polysurfaces
    Select curves on the surface
    Enter
Delete the unrolled surface if you don't want it
The UnrollSrf command only works for developable surfaces. Developable surfaces have curvature in one dimension, if they have curvature at all. Some examples of developable surfaces are: Flat plates, Cones, and Cylinders.
Spheres are non-developable surfaces because they have curvature in two dimensions.
Unrolling a surface may cause significant distortion. Non-developable surfaces will be distorted with local stretching and/or shrinking when flattened. Curves on the surface will have different lengths after flattening. The angle between intersecting curves on the surface will change. The area of a selected part of the surface will change.
You can also use the squish command to unroll a surface. However, it won't be dimensionally accurate.
