  • You know you have thought about it. It's not that hard to get clay from your own backyard...provided you only need a little.
This video takes you through the steps I used to get clay, throw it on a pottery wheel, and fire it in an electric kiln.
I hope you enjoy. Please like and subscribe for more

For your backyard clay you need to add grog to make it throw better. make a big batch of backyard clay, then roll it out thin and fire it. then crush it into a fine powder and mix it into your next batch. This will dramatically improve the clay and make it throw and fire much better. youll have to mess with the mixture until you have a mix that works best for the clay your working with.

Also, store bought clay is fairly significantly aged. aging your clay adds plasticity and can help make it easier to work. its a lot of work but if you just keep making a bunch of blocks of clay, mix in grog, and let it age you should have something nice to work with eventually. easiest way to age is to just block it up and let it sit around in a thick plastic bag like one of the old ones the store bought clay comes in. every couple of months pull it out, make sure its not completely drying out and if it is getting too dry then work some moisture into it bt spraying it with a spray bottle and kneading the moisture in.

That is very observant of you! You must be a musician! I'm a musician myself, and noticed a difference in pitches as well. I wonder if it has more to do with the sizes of the pots or thicknesses of the walls. Very interesting, regardless.

I, Nephi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father; and having seen many afflictions in the course of my days, nevertheless, having been highly favored of the Lord in all my days; yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God, therefore I make a record of my proceedings in my days. Yea, I make a record in the language of my father, which consists of the learning of the Jews and the language of the Egyptians.
And I know that the record which I make is true; and I make it with mine own hand; and I make it according to my knowledge". 1 Nephi 1-3
Hello friends, I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The verses above are the first three verses in The Book of Mormon. I know this probably isn't the most ideal place to talk about religion but I really do want you to know that God loves you. You may not love Him or care about Him at all, but He still will continue to love you. You are a beloved son or daughter of God. He knows you personally and He truly and deeply desires for your happiness. He loves everyone who has every lived on this earth, with a perfect equal love regardless of their race, gender, ethnicity, faith and values and beliefs. The Lord loves you more than you can think or comprehend. "He inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile" 2 Nephi. He is our loving, caring Heavenly Father. We are literally His children and creations. When we were in the womb, he knew about us" Jerimiah 4:5. He knitted us and we were created in His image.
I testify to you that you and I are not a mistake. He knows the very moment when we stand and when we sit. He is familiar with all our ways and knows us personally who we are. The hairs on our very head are numbered. God loved us so much, He sent His Only Begotten Son for us, that we may be able to return and dwell in the presence of God again. The Lord has not forgotten about us even when it feels like He has. He will never forsake us. When we are happy, He and His angels rejoice alongside us. When we are sad, He heals us and lifts us up from our trials. He has always been there for us. He has always been our loving, compassionate Heavenly Father and God. Will we always be His children and people?
I testify to you that God lives and that Jesus is the Christ. Both love you exceedingly and rejoice when you are happy. They both love you so much. They love you with a love unfeigned. They will never ever stop doing good unto you. I know that The Book of Mormon is true. "And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost". Moroni 10:4 I promise and testify to you, that if you will read The Book of Mormon, ponder on its message and ask God if it is not true, you will come to know of its truthfulness, whether its true or not true.
Remember my friends that God loves you with all his heart, might mind, soul and strength. He wants you to be happy. He knows what you are going through and dealing with right now. He desires for you to return back to Him. Unfortunately, He has been misrepresented and seen as a cruel and angry God who anticipates for us to slip and writes down every mistake we make waiting to punish us by those who do not know or know Him fully.
My friends, God has stored many opportunities and blessings for you. He is incredibly eager and desires with all His heart to bless you abundantly. He wants you to live with Him again. He only wants the best for you and your well being. He wants to experience everlasting joy and indescribable happiness in this life and in the life to come. He wants you to partake of His goodness and come and follow Him. The Lord does not care how early or late you decide to come unto Him. I testify to you that if you have strayed and wondered off the path that there is hope in Jesus Christ, The Savior of the world. The Lord accepts those who come unto Him whether your early, late or just in time who desire to change. The Lord will accept you wholeheartedly and forgive you if you are willing to change. The Lord will welcome you and will always be ready to embrace you with open arms. The Lord will lift us up in our trials and use us to bless the lives of those around us if we are willing to change.
If you desire to learn more, you are always welcome to visit comeuntochrist.org. There you will learn more about The Church of Jesus Christ and our core beliefs and values. If you have taken the time to read The Book of Mormon and this comment, thank you. It takes a huge leap of faith and a lot of courage to muster enough faith to read in the Book of Mormon and to believe in something in a personage that you may never see in this lifetime. Although we may not be able to see God and Jesus Christ in this life, I testify to you that they are real. They do truly exist. I promise you that if you will pray to know of their existence, you will come to know whether they exist or have been made up.
You are my friends. The Lord loves you and despite all our weaknesses, complaining, arguing, and shortcomings, he still loves us and will forgive us if we will humble ourselves before Him and diligently seek correction and do whatever is needed to repent.
Remember that The Lord is always available to talk to through prayer 24/7. No question sounds too silly for Him. James wrote, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him" James 1:5. If you must know whether or not something is true or evil and deceptive, you can always pray to God. He will help you know what the truth is and what is not the truth. He will never be too busy to talk to. He will give you strength you need to overcome your temptations and will give you the strength you need to endure through your trials and afflictions. Paul said that The Lord will not give you temptations that you cannot resist, but that in your temptations, He will provide a way for you to resist and overcome them. He will provide a way. He wants to bless you and reward you abundantly. The Lord knows you and will not forget you. You are loved. You are utterly amazing. You have incredible potential. You are not forgotten or ever will be forsaken. You are special. You are unique. You are one of a kind. You have been reserved for this time and The Lord needs you on His side.
It simply would not be the same without you.
      Thank you for your time.

Hi Justin - I'm down here in So CA and recently I started this same experiment! I'm a new potter, but I've had this idea of making ware from hometown mud for a long time, so finding this video is awesome. I would like to compare notes.
Around here the soil hardens to semi-dense clods, so I thought it would be worth a try. I slaked a bucket full in water and screened it to 40 mesh, then dried it out on Hardibacker and wedged. I yielded about 20 lbs of a rather sandy and short clay body after letting it sit for a week. After playing with it for a couple of days I decided I could improve it by screening it through an 80 mesh sieve. This dropped the sand by 5 lbs and increased plasticity significantly. After aging a week I threw a 4x3 tumbler. Like you I found the native clay to be pudding-soft and temperamental, but it did not sag! Also, I noticed it seemed like it absorbed all the water I threw at it. I let it age another week, threw a 5x3 mug shape ~1/4" thick, and found the texture somewhat better to work, kind of sandy, and a little less short. I managed to get a handle attached but it was an exercise in patience due to the clay not wanting to bend. I made a couple of tiles for testing, and I have yet to fire this clay body. I did do a SxS dry shrink test with my ^10 B-mix and the native clay body shrinks a little bit more. So that is what I'm working with so far. I want to improve my clay body and am truly curious about combining earthenware with stoneware. I have found very little practical info online anywhere. Except for you!
So many questions... Was yours a 50:50 B-Mix/Native? Is your B-Mix ^5 or ^10? How is the ^6 glaze fitting with your mix? Are you planning any more experiments with your native clay, either as a clay body or glaze? More please.

Hi David. I'm from york, uk and I've been putting for about 3 years. I've always wanted to use local clay, for eco reasons and because 15 years ago, before I became a potter, I dug my lawn up and was amazed to maybe 200lbs in a very small area of solid moist clay! At the time I cursed as it weighed a ton and was a pain to get rid of. I then laid a patio over the soil! Omg under my patio is clay! I so wish I'd not laid the patio now.
Anyway, a neighbour has just been digging his garden up and 4 feet down he found clay...so hes got me 2 wheelbarrow loads.
I've never done this before but have read just a little bit about it...so wondered a) are you still digging your own clay and b) if so, do you fancy sharing ideas and information as we go through the process of learning how to do it?...
I'm on instagram as @crookedtailceramics if you want to send me a direct message on there.
It's all new to me so it would be good to pool knowledge as I'm experimenting with my local clay. He only brought me a teensy lump round yesterday but I chucked it on the wheel without any sieving at all and threw a tiny pot...it has 3 tiny stones in it but other than that was really really smooth and easy to throw.
But I think it's a bit "short" as I did the "coil test" and it was cracking.
      Any who, good luck!

The crack is because hand dug clay tends to shrink ALOT because it has small particle sizes. I found it is best to powder half and fire the powder. Mix that pre-fired grog in with the clay. You can get a super smooth consistency while lowering the shrink rate. It happens because the purification steps remove much of the silica out of the clay and it behaves like super fine porcelain.

What is the difference between terra-cotta clay and porcelain?

    • @Cate7451
      @Cate7451 5 років тому +29

Terra cotta is low fire and red from iron, or fires that way. Things should be made thicker, items often chip instead of cracking. Like garden pots. Porcelain is more higher tech, white and translucent. Cups could be thrown thinner and used for formal 'China'. Stains show up very well, it's harder and cracks when it breaks. Porcelain was discovered in China when an additive was added to clay. It is a bit harder to work with and you have to clean your studio and equipment before using as stoneware makes it lose its transparency. It is fired to higher temps. This is just a generalization and there are always variables. I work with stoneware as that seems to work for me.

Porcelain I believe is aluminum oxide clay, and terra cotta is from the much more common iron rich red clay. Kaolin is the raw material for both porcelain & aluminum.

    • @granmabern5283
      @granmabern5283 4 роки тому +10

terra cotta clay has sand particles in it as well, to make it workable, Porcelain is whiter clay with powdered bones added to it. When it is fired, the bone burns away leaving the item extremely light and translucent. You can make a kind of porcelain by adding paper or Cotten fibres to clau. This makes extremely versatile clay that you can make thin pieces with, it stays elastic, is resistant to cracking. And because the paper wicks moisture out, there is rarely breakage during firing. It fires high like porcelain

Kudos to you for going through the effort of making your own clay. I would guess why it didn't throw well though is that you didn't let it age or "cheat" the aging by adding in some microbes. You know the old Japanese master let their clay age for generations so the clay they made they never even used themselves....it was passed down through the family. But you can sort of "cheat" the time (I'm sure it would never compare to this well aged Japanese clay lol! How I'd love to try that clay out!) by turning the clay into a slip, adding beer, and then let it sit until enough water evaporates that you can start to work with it.

    • @stringventure
      @stringventure 4 роки тому +6

@@TheEDGAVE so first, my disclaimer is that I am not scientist. I know this info because I took a pottery class in college and threw a bunch of pots that were really just practice and didn't want to fire them and have to buy more clay. So one of the grad students told me that if you let it dry, break it down into dust and then let it sit in a bucket of water it will become clay again and he mentioned the only problem would be that without aging it would lack the elasticity that good clay has. That's when he went into telling me about the old Japanese masters that would make clay and let it age for several generations before it would get used and he would be using clay made by his ancestors several generations before him. He told me that the beer would help to add microbes/elasticity without it needing to age. I want to say he mentioned something about moldy clay being good......I don't know scientifically if mold and microbes are the same.....I might be mis-useing the term microbes. But I do know the beer trick worked well. I think he also mentioned that they would make the clay and then store it somewhere cool and, obviously moist, where it would be harvest years later. That is as much as I know. If you find more info about it I'd love to see what resources you looked at because it is an interesting topic.

The crack on the bottom looked like it was right next to a quite large piece of pure studio clay; maybe the two types of clay shrink differently when you burn them, causing tensions in the pot when the mixture isn't homogeneous, and eventually leading to a crack at that place where I can imagine the tension became higher than on other places.

Your description of the clay on the wheel indicates that it’s either “bad” clay or, more likely, that too much silt was left in the mix. The strainer just isn’t fine enough to remove the silt. That leaves two options: a fiber mesh or thinning out the slurry more and pouring off more times in an attempt to float out the clay and leave silt in the bottom of the bucket.

I think you have a coarse clay there. To get it more throwable i would suggest that you add some 10 to 20% bentonite ( i use clumping cat litter for this) and or a little paper pulp.
Another treatment that may improve plasticity is to add small amounts of sugar or flour and a even smaller ammount of nitrates or protein and roll it into a ball and store it for a week or two to allow some bacterial growth to ocour. It makes the clay smell a bit like the bottom of a river but ot seems to improve its handling dramatically sometimes.

I've read about adding vinegar, beer, wine, mold, urea, wood ash, milk, kero syrup, sugar, etc as a clay deflocculant or as something to speed aging (although some warn that dangerous molds or harmful bacteria might grow with some of the additives). I've also heard of adding small amounts of things which are used as fluxes like table salt, Epsom salt, borax, with varying opinions and warnings about not using too much as these do flux the clay and some warning about the flux type additives causing kiln damage but I'm not sure it would be any worse than some glazes (or the damage that forges get from forge welding flux getting on the firebricks).

I've heard of people using it as an alternative to slip for score and slipping, since it binds the two parts together.

Curious, what color did these turn when bone dry? My stuff is a similar dark grey when wet, but when bone dry turns a light tan/sandy color.

The natural clay from my back garden was a mid-grey, when fired to bisque it has come out a vibrant orangey-red brown as in this video. I suspect it will be dark brown when I've vitrified it.

Do you think it would have helped adding some straw, sand or something like it to the first version, maybe keeping it together better, making it more firm? Really great video. Im 100% gonna do this!

I was thinking the same thing, actually-if he ever added a temper, he did so offscreen and/or didn’t mention it. If he didn’t add any, then I suspect that’s where the crack on the bottom of the marbled one came from (because presumably there are materials already mixed into studio clay that would temper it).
I haven’t tried this myself yet, but like you, I super-duper want to, so I’ve been watching a lot of videos on the subject! It actually took a while to come across other videos that mentioned adding temper (usually in the form of ground-up rocks or shells, or “grog” which is clay that has been fired and then ground back into dust), but I eventually found them, and they say it’s to keep it from cracking. The added dry material would probably also make it a lot easier to work with.

I have an interest in this clay business. Have even as a kid going back to visiting the site of a very old kiln near my hometown in the midwest. I discovered the remains of an old kiln north of here many years ago, including some old marked bricks (LABC and SIMON) and some pieces of wrought iron grill work from something like an oven or furnace. Anyway, I finally got around to looking into videos on how to locate clay deposits, this video being the first that I've actually looked at. This recent interest was prompted by a stroll two days ago where I found a few old bricks cast along a street curb, one of which was marked ACME. Why that brick was here is curious because I think the ACME company was actually in Texas and started making bricks there around 1891. We are more than a thousand miles from Texas. At any rate, in actuality I have essentially zero interest in using clay and making things from it, unlike the guy in this video. However, finding clay deposits, and brickmaking in general, is interesting to me. It turns out that the main interest of people in the midwest was not in bricks, necessarily, but in finding clay deposits that could be used in forming dams for farm ponds. I guess because of the fineness of the particles, clay was excellent for stopping the pond water from leaking away on the dam side of the pond. It happens now that I believe I have a yard totally made of some kind of clay (adobe?) as is much of the soil in this general area (SoCal). Thus, it was the primary building material for early cabins, churches/missions, walls, etc here. I know that digging a hole in my yard is nearly impossible without a pick and shovel, or even some kind of hydraulic chisel/jackhammer. The soil has baked over the years into something akin to sewer tile.

Interesting with regards to the Midwest.
Can you tell me whereabouts? I know Wisc. & Michigan soils hold mainly sand, so are you talking Illinois, Iowa or Nebraska? Maybe Kansas?
I know the Southeastern states hold plenty such as Georgia and the Carolinas, esp. South Carolina that's for sure, but haven't seen much in the Midwest... TY in advance! :)
