I’m actually doing this on my truck now, and can honestly say it would’ve been 1000x’s harder without this video, even with the TSB instructions I printed out from Ford. Only thing is ford calls for 9 hours lol it takes much longer. I took the inter cooler out which I think is a must. Hardest part is actually getting everything off to get to the chain and phasers. And last thing is he doesn’t change the secondary tensioners because they were ok but they come in the kit and mine were showing signs of wear so I swapped them out as well
@@jrolla1858 what kit did you get? I was trying to go Ford OEM all the way if I could just having a hard time finding the parts for things like the guides and Tensioners. BL3Z-6D256-C has several parts in it but not the guides and tensioners. I don't know much about Melling and thought about getting their kit along with the BL3Z-6D256-C kit but that would leave me with two primary chains since both include one. Hey now! aRE YOU me? I have the same truck and so far so good for me too,...I get a rattle about once a month maybe less! but I am watching this getting ready for the worst!
70carlton I had this my 2011 f150 eco boost 1 time which lasted 1-2 sec so I thought I added small can of wynns engine tune up for cleaning lifters and rings to the oil , I was thinking the problem was tensioner either sticky or not enough oil getting to it fast enough . I did add the wynns engine tune up ran the engine for several 15 min intervals left it over night ran again 15 to warm up no noise changed the oil and filter with good quality synthetic 5-30 and 6 oz motor kote no more rattle .
In hind sight , the engine does have 100,000 miles on it and it about that time for a timing chain . Still, there is a lot going on under that cover. Your customer is fortunate to have found you. I can also see why ford wants you to run light weight oil in that engine. Lubrication is a must as well as matiance. You do nice work. Thanks again.
About to do my 11 ecoboost. 226k km Thanks for the video, so well detailed. I already saved the turbos that had seized wastegates. Removed the hot side of the turbo. Removed the wastegate flapper, cleaned everything really well and welded that tab back on for the wastegate actuator. Its been working great, until about two months ago… (when I started having my current issue which is the timing chain)

Thank you for pointing out all the details that most people take for granted what a complicated process for a water pump.do it wrong and the engine will be junk thanks again
Thank you so much for making all these timing chain videos. I have actually used it to show how to get to the oil pump, as mine went bad, and your videos are SO detailed and amazing. Again thank you so much man. I do have one question, what happens when the timing marks don’t line up and I can’t get the cam shaft tool on?
Have you ever found metal shavings in packed in the vct solenoid screens? I'm working on a 2011 3.5 eco, the chain was still intact but the sprockets were worn, all that metal went past the oil pickup, filter and packed up the vct solenoids so i pulled the cam bearing caps. Sure enough the cams and bearing caps were damaged I'm sure the rods and mains are damaged as well. A stretched timing chain has turned into my buddy needing a new engine. 115,000 miles oil changes every 3,000 miles with ford oil and filter. This is a heads up to people doing this job. CHECK those vct solenoids for metal shavings.
At 41:57 the seal that you slide on. In Part 4 you show the same seal and you're putting it in the timing cover plate. I think you have to put this seal in the cover and slide the seal on with the cover plate. That's what I had to do.
Any chance Ford covers this out of warranty? Seems like a total design flaw on their part timing chains should not be stretching enough to cause this at such low mileage.....
Very well made video Thank you !! As for timing cover sealant, I have used Dirko bond (German sealant) b4 on Porsche, Audi, BMW, ect. Seems to work fine and have no issues
I had mine replaced by the dealer at 70,000 Km's. I'm now at 102,000 Km's and it just started with the rattle again!! Why would this happen again?? I thought the last TSB was a permanent fix? Will this just continue to happen if I get it fixed again? It's a 2011 F150 3.5 ecoboost and has always been serviced at the dealer. Thanks for any and all help! Great video! Thank you for taking the time to make it!
Hi, I would ask the dealer if they replaced the van phasers and the secondary chains/ tensioners. If you just go in and replace the main chain it can possible happen again.
What is the book time for this repair? I usually don't work on smaller trucks like these but I have a client who wants it done. How many hours does it take you?
I’m getting ready to do this job and buy the parts. However I’m wondering if there are things “you should” replace. Such as your water pump, oil pump, VCT solenoids.
Nice video and explanation of the timing repair. i have learned to do my own 2018 Transit 150 v6 3.7 timing.. Glad you made this video. ... does it matter if the crankshaft and pistons are in TDC position and if so whats that setting? cheers
Thank you so much for the awesome videos Fordtechmakuloco!! I’ve got mine down to the chain removal and have an issue with the timing. The cams are lined with the indicators matching yours up and locked into place with the plates. I removed the chain and the crank is no lined up where you showed. The indicator is at 8 o clock or so. Should I just spin it to set it to the chain markings? Thanks!
Great video!!!! Very helpful. I was wondering where to get a complete oem timing chain kit(camphasers, water pump, chain, guides, etc.)? Or product that is equivalent. Thank you
I have a 2015 Lincoln Navigator 3.5 ecoboost. Will the listed parts apply to my engine too? Thanks a million! I’ve been watching your videos for years! You helped me with my 2005 F150 5.4 3v!!!
Can you tell me if there is a complete kit that includes timing chain and phasers seal etc ... or do I have to purchase separately .... Awesome video .. Thank you
If you are rebuilding the timing chain on this engine, I highly recommend to change the water pump, because if that crap fail ( which is often) you can go back and take the whole engine apart and if lucky, you might be able to save it
I love your videos! I am preparing to tear apart a 2017 Ford mustang 5.0 and I was wondering if you have any links or help with a guide on the proper timing procedure?
Is it worthwhile to pull the condenser and radiator so you can sit on a stool facing the motor to do all the timing chaing work? You're 2 hours into this and my back is aching just watching it! and you know exactly what you're doing!!
Well I have 320k miles all original miles. Water pump failed so I decided to dive behind it and do this job too. I currently waiting on additional parts. Phaser chains had worn the tensioners, crank pulley had a slight grove from the seal. I replaced the oil pump with a melling while I was right there. Crank sprocket showed wear as well. Timing chain guides looked ok but cheap enough to replace. A few other various wear parts I thought would be smart to replace as well. Thanks for a well made video. Some how I had it 180 degrees out when I pulled it all off. Had to move the crank to clearance position and set the cams. Oops.
How much does this job cost. I need my 3.5 done I'm just worried about it not getting done and cleaned up right. Were the mechanic trying to skip doing something because they're lazy and then charging me for it I've actually had that done to me before.
I put the chain back on exactly how it was to rotate it several times to see if I could get it lined up properly. The dimple on the crank is always off ~180 degrees when the cams are in the correct position. Do you have any advice? Thanks!
Your the best. God is really using you with your amazing gift of teaching. Jesus Loves you, and I pray for blessings over your business in Jesus's name.
Thank you for the video. I have a bad water pump on a 2012 MKT its been 5 months nobody wants to work on it. not even the dealer they offered me a new engine for $9k instead...I'm at the point where I want to fix it myself. but the engine locked up when water pump went out because it was running on highway when it happened. can i still change it the water pump even though the engine locked up or was any other critical damage?... Thank you in advance for any experienced input.
Great video series. I have a 2011 F150 with an intermittent start up noise on my 3.5. I was quoted $1,800 to $2,200 to complete this job. Does this sound reasonable? It’s a big job, A service advisor said Ford allows 10 to 12 hours of labor to complete it.
Nathan Johnston I had the same chain rattle I added small can of wynns engine tune up for lifters and stuck rings my reasoning was that the tensioners might be sticking or the oil lines to the tensioner was clogging any way I ran it for 15 min in park let it sit overnight started the next day ran for 15 min , started it again let it sit for a few days restarted ran in park 15 -20 min No noise . Changed oil and filter added 6 oz of motor kote and 5-30 synthetic oil and new premium oil filter no noise since , I am working on the truck and won’t get on the road till spring as I just welded in cab corners rockers with my welder and prepped primed and covered with bed liner but the weather here in Ontario Canada has turned to cold to do much else outside and I need to get front vac hubs ,differential clutches ,brakes ,touch up paint and get 2 new tires then safety check at local shop
Good day Sr, I got a question for you I have a 2013 Ford 150 3.5 ecoobost with bad engine I’m home I have and 2009 ford edge for a customer….. never come back long story .. the edge have on it a 3.5 engine that’s same engine ?
@fordtechmakuloco I just had my 2012 3.5 done.. all vcts, phasers, guides chains were you replaced. after a short drive home 30 miles from the shop it jumped timing..we dont see clear conclusive evidence that is hit a rod but we do see tiny mark that it may have hit a rod on the piston but my question to you is why did it jump timing, did one of the new components fail?
I know this is an old video, but hopefully you will reply. Why didn't you replace the 2 small upper chains that go on the phasers? Wouldn't they age the same as the main chain?
Seems like a very good time to clean the intake valves and install a catch can. My truck just started making this noise. It isn't terrible yet. Any guess how long before it becomes a serious problem?
I have the duratech 3.5 Taurus. I am taking the right-side phasers off in order to replace that upper chain guide. This secondary tensioner pushes down fairly easily. I noticed, just while checking things out that the left side secondary tensioner won't push down at all🤔. Does this mean that tensioner is shot? I wasn't planning to do anything to that side.
My flats are not lining up all together for the holding tool. I have turned the engine over a dozen times and not only is each side of the engine no lining up with each other but both cams on each side don't line up also. Is there a video to fix this?
Did I miss it, or is there not a link to the cookie wheel for cleaning the gasket surface? I have also looked on Amazon, but so far not finding any like yours yet. Also, thanks for the videos.
Just wondering if the tensioner for the secondary chains are supposed to be so tight one had to use the career killing end of a hockey stick to get them to budge? After that they worked loose.
Great videos, I followed these to the t and installed new solenoids phasers and a complete timing set. I now am getting intermittent p0016 and p0017 codes. My actual versus desired on both exhaust cams is exactly 5° all the time and holds a very steady. Did I set the timing wrong?
Thank you so much for doing these videos you've literally saved me a ton of money! I love how detailed and precise you are on your break downs. The extra side tips are awesome too. Hands down your videos are a God send. I only have 1 question, I'm in the process of doing this exact same procedure on my 2011 Ford F150 ecoboost and I noticed after removing the phasers that the little nubs on the camshafts do not align 12 and 3 12 and 9 they are slightly off from that. Does this mean my camshafts are out of alignment and if so how do I correct this?
I look at it as its the standard procedure at 100K to change water pump on a Honda when you change the timing belt, in total that's about a 1200 procedure at Dealer. The 3.5 water pump on a Ford is difficult, and expensive to change at the dealer, about 1800, some garges remove the engine. I thought while you have water pump removed, why not change it?
The water pump is external, it just bolts onto the front cover at the top of the engine very simple repair in the future if it ever leaks. If it was internal like on other versions of this engine then yes definitely but this one is external.
Thanks Eric for the clarification, the water pump is definitely a hot topic of discussion for this video lol. Impressed with the level of detail in your clean up and prep of cover and components prior to reassembly The water pump mode of failure is usually the shaft seal, that wouldn't be revealed on inspection. coolant changes are crucial esp on other 3.5 versions,
How tight are the bolts? I am working on one and I'm worried about breaking the bolts or camshafts. Breaker bar and wrench on the camshaft but don't wanna budge
ok i know this is an old video but please i need help, my timing chain slipped and i have no idea where i should line the crank timing mark and the cam timing marks before i install a new chain, Does it matter as long as the chain marks line up with the gear marks?
My 3.5 finally started rattling after all the torture I put it under and 260 thousand miles later 😂 only issue I've had with my truck other than vavle cover gaskets redone my whole timing assembly every guide chain and all 3 tensioners for less than 1,200
Replacing the water pump. I am trying to align my camshaft pulleys and crankshaft sprocket to the proper position. My left camshaft pulley is close to being in the correct position, my right is way off. Now I can't turn the crankshaft any further. I am in a bind because now I feel like I have completely messed up my engine timing and the crankshaft bolt won't turn anymore, and I am afraid to force it in fear of breaking the bolt. Do you have any guidance on how to remedy this.
What I found out on the secondary chain tensioner, on the the left side of the engine, I seen that it wasn't pushing up on the chain, could you verify this process for replacing them. I took the one that I felt it was bad, I began to compress it about 3 times, and it released to full tension. My concern was I put both left and right tensioner new and once I pulled the plastic tab out they didn't spring up to full tension. I am hoping that I can remove the valve covers and plunge them down and get them to release to full tension. Was wondering if you have seen this problem?

Will this just continue to happen if I get it fixed again? It's a 2011 F150 3.5 ecoboost and has always been serviced at the dealer. Thanks for any and all help! Great video! Thank you for taking the time to make it!
Hi, I would ask the dealer if they replaced the van phasers and the secondary chains/ tensioners. If you just go in and replace the main chain it can possible happen again.
Any update on this?
Outstanding!! Great info for us DYI Mechs. Thanks!
This video is very professional EXCELLENT !
Thanks!
ahhhh the ford ecoboost....saving you $300 in gas and only costing you an extra $3000 in repairs in 100k miles.
I've got 218k mls on mine and its just now needing to be replaced thankfully. It was one of the repairs I had planned on quite a while ago.
@@robertlalum1461same mileage for me except on an explorer non-eb. Wish I had just done these when I had it open for the water pump 5k miles ago.
I have 229k first major an oil pump
Mine failed at 50K, and dealer cost is now $4900.
This is by far the hardest repair I've ever done
Remember the old cork valve cover gaskets? ;-)
Not since my military days.
Brian must do these jobs in his sleep now! Great job at explanation!!
Hey Brian. Are the cam phasers a necessary replacement when doing this job? Thanks.
Great video thank you do you have Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Installer information?
Ford I miss the old style engines
132turista demexico the old style that were workout at 90k? And had less power than today's engine's
Jondavid Bristow so I guess my old 302 in my explorer with 257,000 miles is "worn out" not hardly there jabronie!
@@jondavidbristow9819 there is a reason fox body's are as popular as they are.
chad harmon your 302 didn’t boast over 100 horse power per liter.
You helped me with my 2005 F150 5.4 3v!!!
hey i'm about to tackle this job. are we not upgrading the oil pump at this time. 2013 f150 3.5 eco boost
Can you tell me if there is a complete kit that includes timing chain and phasers seal etc ... or do I have to purchase separately .... Awesome video .. Thank you
Camera work is nice
If you are rebuilding the timing chain on this engine, I highly recommend to change the water pump, because if that crap fail ( which is often) you can go back and take the whole engine apart and if lucky, you might be able to save it
Would you happen to recall what oil that was running and mileage on motor? Looks pretty good inside.. Thanks.
Nice to know I'm not the only one that talks to myself
Do the phaser chains need replacing too?
I don’t
Oops.
Btw mineral spirits melts that silicone gasket. Soaked it and plastic brush took it right off
How much does this job cost.
Thanks!
You are the best. Which you were here in Warner Robins GA. How much does it cost to replace this timing chain.
Timing Jobs run $3,500 to $4k.
Your the best. God is really using you with your amazing gift of teaching. Jesus Loves you, and I pray for blessings over your business in Jesus's name.
GREETINGS! AND THANKS FOR THE VIDEOS. IS THIS PROCEDURE THE SAME FOR 3.7L f-150 year 2012?
Thank you for the video. I have a bad water pump on a 2012 MKT its been 5 months nobody wants to work on it. not even the dealer they offered me a new engine for $9k instead...I'm at the point where I want to fix it myself. but the engine locked up when water pump went out because it was running on highway when it happened. can i still change it the water pump even though the engine locked up or was any other critical damage?... Thank you in advance for any experienced input.
Questions the sprocket need move together with the can because when I move the sprocket the can take little to move thanks hope u can help with that 😉
Yuo one best very help i fix my own truck thanks to yuo .
Great video series. I have a 2011 F150 with an intermittent start up noise on my 3.5. I was quoted $1,800 to $2,200 to complete this job. Does this sound reasonable? It’s a big job, A service advisor said Ford allows 10 to 12 hours of labor to complete it.
Those prices are dirt cheap.
Do you have a link to purchase that tool to replace the crankshaft seal?? I will be fixing my ecoboost soon and that is the only tool I don’t have
Good day Sr, I got a question for you I have a 2013 Ford 150 3.5 ecoobost with bad engine I’m home I have and 2009 ford edge for a customer….. never come back long story .. the edge have on it a 3.5 engine that’s same engine ?
@fordtechmakuloco
I just had my 2012 3.5 done.. all vcts, phasers, guides chains were you replaced. after a short drive home 30 miles from the shop it jumped timing..we dont see clear conclusive evidence that is hit a rod but we do see tiny mark that it may have hit a rod on the piston but my question to you is why did it jump timing, did one of the new components fail?
I know this is an old video, but hopefully you will reply. Why didn't you replace the 2 small upper chains that go on the phasers? Wouldn't they age the same as the main chain?
Do you have a part number for the timing chain guides and the secondary/primary chain that the link are still working. Much appreciated
Do you have any videos on doing the exhaust cam on bank 1?
Can you please give us the part number and where to buy the front crankcase seal driver tool?
Great video, wonder why these fail though. The chain looks pretty robust. Specially compared to earlier 3.5s.
Did I miss it, or is there not a link to the cookie wheel for cleaning the gasket surface? I have also looked on Amazon, but so far not finding any like yours yet. Also, thanks for the videos.
Haven't had to do one yet. I think it would be just a simple to remove the engine? Or lift the body? Thank for the videos!
Just wondering if the tensioner for the secondary chains are supposed to be so tight one had to use the career killing end of a hockey stick to get them to budge? After that they worked loose.
yes
Great videos, I followed these to the t and installed new solenoids phasers and a complete timing set. I now am getting intermittent p0016 and p0017 codes. My actual versus desired on both exhaust cams is exactly 5° all the time and holds a very steady. Did I set the timing wrong?
Did you figure out what happened?
amazing this stuff works at all
Thank you so much for doing these videos you've literally saved me a ton of money! Does this mean my camshafts are out of alignment and if so how do I correct this?
how did you end up correcting?
@@jacobstover1949 I bought a used motor lol, my repairs didn't work!
@@danlawrence6571 what part of the repair didn't work Dan?
I think toyotas sealant, FIPG, Is one of the best sealants ive used. You should check it out if you havent heard of it. i use the black one
Brian you planning on changing the water pump when you put it back together?
no, why?
Impressed with the level of detail in your clean up and prep of cover and components prior to reassembly The water pump mode of failure is usually the shaft seal, that wouldn't be revealed on inspection. coolant changes are crucial esp on other 3.5 versions,
What kind of grease were you referring to when adding back in the seal and also on the ignition tube seals?
I use trans gel
Year of Truck?
Miles on engine?
Will a code ever get thrown for excessive slake?
How tight are the bolts? I am working on one and I'm worried about breaking the bolts or camshafts. Breaker bar and wrench on the camshaft but don't wanna budge
I have mine stuck as well! How did you crank it out ?
Brian! What would you say the difficulty is for the same procedure, but on the 5.0 V8? About the same, easier, harder?
Honestly the only time I had to time a 5.0 is when it was on the ground for a short block swap.
Thank you sir, you're the best!
ok i know this is an old video but please i need help, my timing chain slipped and i have no idea where i should line the crank timing mark and the cam timing marks before i install a new chain, Does it matter as long as the chain marks line up with the gear marks?
My 3.5 finally started rattling after all the torture I put it under and 260 thousand miles later 😂 only issue I've had with my truck other than vavle cover gaskets redone my whole timing assembly every guide chain and all 3 tensioners for less than 1,200
Is now a good time to replace the thermostat? Is that a part thats prone to fail?
Replacing the water pump. I am trying to align my camshaft pulleys and crankshaft sprocket to the proper position. My left camshaft pulley is close to being in the correct position, my right is way off. Now I can't turn the crankshaft any further. I am in a bind because now I feel like I have completely messed up my engine timing and the crankshaft bolt won't turn anymore, and I am afraid to force it in fear of breaking the bolt. Do you have any guidance on how to remedy this.
Are you planning to do anymore videos on your Ecodiesel?
Shooting my review tomorrow actually.
Can i rub a little bit of engine oil on the valve cover spark plug rings instead of grease ?
Is there any benefit/reason to clean the oil out of the inside of the CAC while you have everything torn apart?
Only if you are going to install a catch can after this.
Why were the colored links of the chain not on the timing marks when you had the cam tools in place?
Forgive me if I missed it, but you stated the HPFP bolts are torque to yield. I don't seem them in the list of parts to get.
Is it worth doing the auxiliary pump, PN BR3Z8501D while you’re in there? The truck has 216k miles on it?
Would this work as a general guideline for the 2017 model? Asking for a friend...
