  • If you have ever felt like you were a bit of a fraud, or embarrassed to charge a client for a service provided well, then like many people you might suffer a bit of imposter syndrome. That's the feeling that you are not quite the 'real deal' even though you may have done years of training with plenty of qualifications to prove it - and have plenty of experience!
In this video I seek to address this issue using the example of a famous conman - Ferdinand Waldo Demara Jr.. Despite his notoriety as a conman (Demara is also known as 'The Great Imposter'), I'll explain why there is a lot we can learn from his beliefs on power vacuums and entitlement - and why an underdeveloped sense of entitlement can spoil things for ourselves and those we could potentially be helping.

This is useful and interesting even for those of us who aren't therapists. Thank you.

Thank you Mark. This hit home on several points. Guilty as charged. I'll now be on the look-out for the vacuum, for my niches. Yes, there are several. You've thrown down the gauntlet, and I accept the challenge.

Absolutely love it. The best motivational message I've heard in years and just perfectly landed where I most needed it to validate my own feelings. In the world that only seems to value lifelong experience in evidence based treatments there is little room for creativity and innovation especially if you don't hold several PhDs noone would take you seriously. But then the knowledge base gets stale. Good to be reminded that there is still enough vacuum for finding own niche in.

Very deep. I’ve unfortunately knowing a couple common quite well and you are spot on. It’s nice to know that those characteristics can be used for a good and what exactly they are. Thank you so much.

How can I not be so influenced by the thoughts and opinions of others around me? Because I hear many opinions and ideas that carry dislike and belittling others, and this matter bothers me, but it happens almost daily, and I feel affected by them overtime.
    Thank you

Consider opinions just from people you trust or those you know that have your best interest in mind. Limit those opinions to a max of 4 and then go with the one that your instincts incline towards.

Thank you soooo much for all your videos. And this one today was outstanding!!! I was especially awed and enchanted by this one because it helped me understand something very odd that’s been happening to me during my sessions with my clients. For the last 2 months I’ve been “entering” a state where not only I have the perfect verbal response for my client but also I’m aware of a beautiful bodily state as if I am “channeling” an entity full of love, compassion, and an intelligence I was not aware of. This has left me feeling stunned even during the days that I don’t see clients. I love the feeling but I’m not even interested in socializing outside of my immediate family. I was just telling my husband a few days ago about it and telling him I wish that for him in his work and then I saw your video. I also do a lot of training with the The Milton Erickson Foundation and am attending an online workshop presently. Much love to you and everyone and everything you love!

    Neither over nor under entitled👍
    Reminds me of:
“Exaggeration is a standard peculiarity of man. To deprecate is often a form of exaggeration which people do not notice, because it appears to be its opposite.”
