I came from a very abusive home with a mother who always told me she never wanted me, beat me with a board with nails in it, lock me in a cold dark basement with no windows and a dirt floor and wasn't feed but every 2 or 3 days. My older sisters would listen to Cat Stevens all the time so I would ask God at the age of for to help me be a good girl so I wouldn't get punish (just for existing) and at night thank God that I made it through another day. While I was in the basement I would hear my sisters listening to Cat Stevens and his voice would calm me and I would pretend I was in a warm place listening to Cat Stevens. His music helped me to understand God's plan for me and why I had to go through my childhood, to help others who are young and going through all the things I survived in my life, there isn't one thing that all these young women have been going through that I didn't. When I told them I would go through them all over again they are shocked but if I didn't I wouldn't know how to help them, now I have so many young girls that call me mom and my favorite mama. Even today I still listen to Cat Stevens when I feel stressed, or just want to relax, his voice and music is great therapy.
To be clear, he didn't write Morning Has Broken - that was written by Eleanor Farjeon in 1931 and the music was a traditional melody and I believe Eleanor Farjeon based it on a translation of a poem by St Francis of Assisi - what Cat Stevens did was his own arrangement - so it's more a cover. He DID do a great job, but let's give credit where it should go.

Just a beautiful, spiritual man with a good soul and superb musicality. I once read that the story behind this is that he was raised in the city of London, theater district where the streets were full of light at night. As a young man on his first journey for a gig, he found himself out one clear night in the countryside and, for the first time, the light of the moon cast his shadow. And so this song was born of that experience. Another good song from him is Father and son. He sings this beautiful song in two voices to reveal the powerful emotions of a boy coming of age and the guidance of his father.
. . . . T R A N C E . . . Best darl-garn Folk Singer . . . Ever!!! 😍 💘 🤗 🤗 Been listening to this angelic and wise, smart sound for a half-century. Peace and tranquility, to all!
He does have a magical voice. Him and Eddie (Vedder) both hit me that way! The whole concert video is awesome I watch it a few times a year. He has so many great song... I think Love My Dog probably relates more at this time than any.
One RARE Sunday (bad on me) at church they said turn to page whatever and it was Morning Has Broken. I sang that baby!!!!! I had no idea it was in the Hymnal.
I saw him live in Toronto (Massey Hall) in the 70's. It was an amazing concert and even though it was a medium sized venue he made the evening almost intimate. He really connected with the audience.
Most people who listen to Yusuf Islam’s songs for the first time are utterly captivated by his melodic and resonating voice. But in the same light the craftsmanship of his lyrics are brilliant. The lyrics are not on topical but universal themes we can all relate to. This gives his songs a timeless quality that make them as relevant today as when they were published fifty years ago.
When I moved from Wichita, Kansas to Everett, Washington 32 years ago we had 3 cassette tapes and a tape player.. One of the tapes was Cat Stevens greatest hits. I already loved his work but that tape sustained me driving across country. When DVD's first came out, one of the first I bought was his live DVD.. I cant remember the name but it is a great documentation of the tour... and he does all of 'those' songs on the DVD... worth every second..

I want his song Oh Very Young played at my funeral. I Can't Keep It In is another good song. His voice is soothing and his songs are inspirational. I was stuck on the couch, after surgery on my feet when I was a kid, and Mom would put Cat Stevens on the stereo to help ease my pain. And, believe it or not it helped.
Oh Very Young is second only to Amazing Grace (Nana Mouskouri) on my funeral music list, Lance. Ty, if you read this, I'd love to hear your reaction to Oh Very Young.
Cat Stevens had a unique voice and delivery and this song proves it. More of his greatness in songs like Peace Train, my favorite, along with Another Saturday Night, Father and Son and Morning Has Broken. Keep up the great work Renaissance Man with these timeless classics. Cat Stevens was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 along with Hall and Oates and Kiss.
It’s so funny that I just saw your video. I’ve been learning how to play this song on guitar this past week. I was quite young when these songs came out. His voice and his words give a sense of feeling home, safety and comfort. I felt this as a four year old. There’s a sincerity and integrity in his songs. That is why he became so incredibly popular. He was the voice of an era. Then he left us for a long time to seek out his own life and it’s meaning. He’s back now and playing again. Again...we should be listening to him as he shares his joy and wisdom with us at a time we all need to learn and have a great need to be comforted and reminded of things that we truly already know. ❤️ How’s that for some hippie crap! LOL
Great songwriter. Was a big Cat Stevens fan in the 70s. Check out his song...Father and Son...a conversation between a father and his son. Beautiful song! 🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦
I grew up in the seventies. I had a wonderful uncle who played this for me on his guitar when I was a child. It wasn’t until years later that I realized he wasn’t the one who wrote it. Rip Uncle Tommy.
He is a legend. I remembering listening and singing to my brother Paul’s album of Tea For The Tillerman at the age of 12 and loving every single song. I have been a fan ever since then and the day I fell in love with my late wife many years ago, I sang this song at a talent show on a freshman sophomore weekend trip in upstate New York.👍🏻❤️☮️✌🏻
I enjoyed his voice when I was a youngster. Thought his music was deep. Then, I went to a concert. He started performing and suddenly walked off the stage. The crowd went nuts yelling and cheering for him to come back out, which he finally did. He was still Cat Steven's then, maybe he was already questioning the purpose of his life and music. Only time I ever saw a performer of that caliber just walk off the stage. I was very young and worked hard to get the money for that ticket from my parents. Now that I'm older, I can appreciate the peace his music offers. I 'm not ticked off anymore...lol
Cat Stevens has made some fabulous music in his time and has a superb back catalogue . Never get fed up with listening to this lovely song .Glad you enjoyed it.
Yusuf Islam aka cat Stevens is one of my favourite musicians I've been lucky enough to see him perform twice now. Not many musicians come to little old Adelaide South Australia they skip our state so I'm happy

Love Cat Stevens. No shortage of his music in my house. This was one of Mom's favorites. Mine is Peace Train. Thank you for the wonderful memories of Mom.❤️
I've loved Cat Stevens since I was a child. His music and voice made this ADHD troubled kid of the 70's to calm my ass down and reflect. He left the music business many years ago but has returned with new music and its quite good. It's sad what the media has done to him. It's best to visit his website and look under "Chinese Whiskers - Mr. Ho Ho" where he answers even the most trivial of questions just to set the record straight. Let's climb aboard the Peace Train...
Cat Stevens has been one of my favorite singer songwriters for decades. You might want to play and comment on "Where do the children play," "Foreigner Suite" and "Ruby Love." Before I forget you will probably get a kick out of listening to "If you want to sing out" also. (I really love that fun song.)
@@lelleithmurray235 I didn't say it right but Peace Train is my favorite Cat Stevens tune. Whittaker's version is my favorite of Moon Shadow. Always liked Whittaker for smooth easy listening.
Can you imagine a song like this being played on Top 40 radio today? It was, in 1972. By the way, the thing about his voice that you're trying to describe is a large part of the magic of Yusef Cat Stevens.
Finally some Cat Stevens! It is about time. He has so many wonderful songs. Father and Son to make you nearly cry. Morning Has Broken to make you appreciate the day! You should really listen to a lot of his stuff. He left music for a while to focus on Islam, changed his name to Yusef. He has come back in recent years, still singing some of the songs of the past as well as others.
