- You can sit with us anytime here at Breakfast All Day, but especially when we're reviewing "Mean Girls." It's the movie version of the musical version of the 2004 movie, and while it hits the beats you know and features all the famous lines, it loses something in translation. Angourie Rice steps into the Lindsay Lohan role as Cady Heron, a homeschooled teenager who switches to a public high school and falls in with the popular clique, led by queen bee Regina George (Reneé Rapp). Directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. Written by Tina Fey, who also reprises her role from the original film. Co-starring Auli'i Cravalho, Jaquel Spivey, Avantika, Bebe Wood, Christopher Briney, Jenna Fischer and Tim Meadows. In theaters now.

Its wild when people say they are making something for a new generation when the original still exists, as if watching something that came out more than 15 years ago will cause this generation to burst into flames.
That's what I was thinking: the built-in audience consists of (mostly) girls and women of all ages who like the original movie. Not many have seen the stage musical.
The musical numbers are great though
A lot has changed in 20 years and I think this new movie reflects some of those changes and I’m sure if you’re a younger person this movie will mean to you what mean girls 2004 meant to those teenagers of the time. :)
I really like Angourie Rice. And musicals. That said, Rachel McAdams, Lindsay Lohan, Lizzy Caplan, and Amanda Seyfried just cannot be beat…
She's super cute in the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies! And she was good in The Nice Guys.
Indeed, Angourie is a beautiful and talented young Aussie lady. She really stood out in both “The Nice Guys” and the “Home” Spider-Man films…
Alonso nails it "it doesn't have the load bearing structure for a musical."
As a fan of the Broadway musical, the music is a million times better in the stage show. The new arrangements for the music suck the life out of the songs. They made catchy tunes sound very bland by toning down the orchestrations to make them sound like current pop hits like Billie Ellish would release.
As a fan of the stage musical, there were several songs that got cut that I wish they’d included. I left feeling like there wasn’t enough music and my friend who I went with felt like there was too much. So, different strokes I guess
I thought this was just flat out bad. I didn't think any of the songs were particularly catchy or presented in a fun way. So then all you're left with is a lazy copy of the original movie, that hits all the same plot points and recycles scenes and even dialogue, only with a lot fewer laughs and a less charismatic cast.
Walmart brought back Mean Girls more successfully than this film

Different interpretation
In Tampa Florida. Went to my local, very nice Dolby theater and i also had the same issue with the sound mix. Couldn’t make out the lyrics probably 40% of the time. Loved the movie regardless.
Why does this exist? An otherwise successful and critically acclaimed musical on Broadway, ultimately killed by the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. Why they didn't re-launch it on Broadway, I do not know, but generally they'll make a feature film musical out of literally any Broadway musical if it draws enough money.
I agree that the film's biggest flaw, is the musical numbers are unremarkable and simply not memorable. Even after listening to the motion picture soundtrack, nothing really sticks out musically.
Grace Randolph thinks it was interesting to update it for a social media time.
Christy and Alonso, great job! Liked and subscribed ✅ I do a quick shorts review from a celebrate recovery 12-step perspective. So really enjoy watching reviews and getting more information. Thought the theme of bullying might resonate with a lot of high school students but also adults. Keep up the great work 🥳👍
I loved the 2024 film… we had so much fun watching it! Loved the call backs and the new stuff they sprinkled in!
6:35 Yes, but this would have been a correct usage of the word! Now more than ever, it's essential for people who actually know this word's meaning to demonstrate its proper usage.
So are Waitress & Color Purple the best of all these musicals that have been released in Theatres?
It sounds like the material has taken a journey from being anti-bullying to Bullies are Fun! Bullying is just another way of expressing oneself! Bullies get all the best songs and costumes! At least the original movie had a clear stance in this regard. Rachel McAdams committed to being unlikeable (while still human and vulnerable), but judging from the trailer and this review it seems like Renee Rapp somehow sees this character as inspiring and empowering. Not sure if I want to support a movie that portrays bullies as misunderstood performance artists in the same year that we’re going to put a certain bully back in the White House….
Christy, I thought the same thing after I heard “Angourie” pronounced in interviews haha. And I believe I first heard her name when you guys reviewed THE NICE GUYS, so I’ve been saying it wrong, too!
It’s our fault, sorry! 😄
Haha, no worries! Keep up the great reviews@@BreakfastAllDay
Big fan of the Tina Fey-verse. Saw the Mean Girls musical back in March 2018. Loved it. Saw this tonight. Overall really enjoyed this. They kept my favorite joke from the stage version about what Regina would be called if she were a boy. The one disappointment for me, and this is kind of big, were the songs. Normally musical adaptations have a really beefed up orchestration because a 50 person orchestra is prohibitively expensive live but feasible for a film score. These felt really hollow and canned. There was a really cool opportunity to lean into the EDM and pop orchestrations, especially with something like Sexy, but I found the final product disappointing. Still a fun and funny experience.
That boy-name joke was a good one, especially because she delivered it in such a deadpan way. Thanks for re-joining us, Jack!
I had a good time. I remember seeing Mean Girls opening night at 16, and it was an immediate teen classic to everyone around me. I like that the film isn't afraid to be a musical and goes for it. Side Note: my cousin used to play and do musicals with Renne Rapp in Charlotte years ago before she hit broadway :)
It’s fine if people want to remake stuff for a newer generation.
I enjoy this one, but the original was much better. I really want to see the Broadway musical version, but I heard this is a blend of the movie and the musical.
Really like Janis and Damian; they have the singing chops. Cady is on the weaker end, similar to what people said about Timothee in Wonka.
Are there any spoilers in this review?
There are not.
The audio problem are not the movie, when I watch it there was no audio problem
Same here. I was at a Dolby screening too and the sound was great
I didn't like this movie. I thought the movie don't think the musical aspect mixed well with the story. Why doesn't mean girls also understand that Janis was also the villian in the movie who also manipulated Cady for her own selfish purpose
Christy understood the assignment in wearing pink 🩷
That's beige.
somebody is colorblind! 😂😂😂
I really dislike "cursive singing" in musicals (a type of singing where you can't understand most of the words).
I saw this a couple of days after seeing Matilda, and damn, I was spoiled by Matilda. This movie seemed more of a poor rehash of the original movie with songs, as opposed to an inspired musical of the movie. The songs just didn't wow me much.
Finally saw this on Paramount+, and boy, was the direction flat. This could've been a much different (better) movie with directors with musical experience. The bits that showed the toxicity of social media were effective, tho.
I like this movie a lot more than you guys but this review was fetch! Thank you so much.
We will make fetch happen here at Breakfast All Day.
It was a theater issue. The singing was clear on my end
Good to know!
Oh my... Christy with her hair back slayin that and lookin young. Nice review guys. Big fan of the first one.
I thought the movie was great. I'm not one of those people in love with the original tho. I seen it years ago but it's not something I'm in love with.
I'm not particularly a fan of either the film or music genre, but I think a good k-pop adaptation of _Mean Girls_ would make a billion dollars 🤔
Revisiting the original film for the first time since childhood (nothing crazy but I see the appeal) in the same day as this remake really hammers home how little Tina Fey actually added to her first script. I almost have to respect the audacity and commitment to this level of laziness.
no
How did I have to look through 7 videos to get to the reviewers I actually subscribe to for this movie review? Do better, algorithm
Aww, sorry to hear that. Clicking on the little bell at the top right will give you notifications when we have a new video out, if that helps :)
Forgot about that as it gets spammy but the bell is uniquely useful for you, thanks for heads up!
Nope, won't see it, the original was mediocre at best as well, wanted to be Clueless very badly.
Tina Fey needs to move on. It's been 20 years as she's making various versions of the same story. It's like Galifinakis making a between the fernes movie 15 years after the sketches. Creative bankrupcy.
