Do the math on how much area is in a 34.5 mile radius circle versus a 36.8 mile radius circle, and keep in mind this search will be conducted while a squadron of angry Hornets is trying to splash the searcher.

Geography also has something to do with it, U.S. bordered only 2 countries by land. There are advantages and disadvantages of being bordered by two oceans and only few neighboring countries. The advantages are that it helps insulated the country against large-scale invasions and provide two major trading routes. The disadvantage is that you need ships to get anywhere outside North America (it is possible to drive to South America, but it's not cost-effective).

The USS enterprise was the first Nuke carrier ever, and when building it congress didn't like its cost, and so they sarcastically went all out and gave it 1 reactor for every boiler a standard carrier would have, 8. Now a nuke carrier only actually needs 2... so... yeah the Enterprise could literally go so fast it would fall apart, during speed tests they actually had structure issues because it was reaching 40 knots and still had a lot more to go.

I'm looking forward to the new enterprise cvn-80 frankly, CVN65 was just decommisioned and was longer than the ford, faster (It was able to out run the escort ships) , ran on 8 reactors (though it didn't need them) and it seems to make sense to hold back on on some advancements to keep with tradition of having the most advanced toys on a recurring namesake like the enterprise.

    • @domoncar6782

Difference of opinion. Not everyone designs their navy the same way.
US has supercarriers because it intends to fight battles far far away. The Russian (Chinese are way too new to the carrier game) Navy doesn't operate on the same principle. Their navy is designed to counter & deter US Navy. They win if US is unable to deploy a CBG into an area. So they went for STOVL/STOBAR ships. Cheaper and effective in the short range.
Soviet Union didn't even care for Carriers, for there principle was to fight a land war Europe and the Navy's job was deny US Navy and merchant fleet access to Europe. So submarines, frigates, missile boars & ASW ships for Soviet Navy.
US Navy had the job of fighting 1000s of miles from their home and keeping lanes clean. So Carriers , ASW helos, destroyers , & submarines for USN.

The Nimitz went way over budget as well when she was developed. The Nimitz had many major technological advancements over the Enterprise (CVN 65) and the previous class of carrier which included the Kitty Hawk and the Kennedy. (CV63 and CV67). These overruns allowed us to be able to produce a much better carrier in future models (CVN69 and up) and with each carrier built we were able to refine the design a bit more every time. I have served onboard 2 of the carriers and sailed 3 all together and there were differences in each one. All 3 were also sequential (CVN73, 74, 75) but improvements were made to each one. If I were a guessing man here I would say we are going to see a similar evolution with the Ford Class. BTW there will be at least 3 in the class as of right now. The Ford has been running sea trials, The Kennedy and Enterprise (CVN 79 and 80 respectively) have been awarded and the Kennedy is about 50% complete.

There are more than a few errors in this video. For example the USS Ford has the dual-band radar (DBR) system consisting of the X band AN/SPY-3 multifunction radar with the AN/SPY-4 S band Volume Search Radar (VSR) emitters. They are sensors not electronic warfare systems. Both the Nimitz class and the USS Ford will be equipped with AN/SLQ-32(v)4 electronic warfare system. The Nimitz Class has SPS-48E, SPS-49(V)5 and the SPQ-9B radars fused into a single picture that is integrated with the Shipboard Self Defense System and the Cooperative Engagement System. You copied from Wikipedia that the Nimitz class is armed with "16-24 RIM 7 missiles." What they actually have is three or four NATO RIM-7 Sea Sparrow missile launchers each carrying 8 missiles. The Ford carries initially 2 x RIM-162 ESSM launchers (Mk 29 launcher), 2 x RIM-116 RAM launchers (Mk 144 launcher 42 missiles) & 2 x PHALANX 20mm Close In Weapon Systems (CIWS) (not four). The Ford one day may have laser defensive weapons as may the Nimitz's. Some of the Nimitz Class ships have the Surface Ship Torpedo Defense System (SSTDS) as presumably does the Ford. Both ships have various thickness the high-strength low-alloy steel (HSLA-100) amour and some Nimitz has additional Kevlar as does the Ford. The Ford and Nimitz Class will essentially carry the same type aircraft at the same time. The Nimitz quoted rate is one aircraft launched every 20 seconds,. The Ford is said to be able to launch aircraft faster and for a more sustained time. The French only have one aircraft carrier and it does indeed have steam catapults. You'd think you'd show some pictures of the other aircraft carriers as you discussed them. The Russians do have a super carrier as do the Chinese (an old converted Russian carrier). This video reminds me of someone that read the Wikipedia article and nothing more.

One of the biggest benefits to the automated features is that the Ford class can launch and maintain far more aircraft in flight, with less crew, because they can arm them much faster. Given how carriers fight, this is a huge benefit--having planes in the sky is essential for defense against the biggest threats currently to carriers (Missiles and Subs)--as planes allow for better coordination with escort ships.

btw all of the planes mentioned can be carried by both, although F4s and F14s are retired. The F35c is almost finished developing , it just still needs more testing on the landing gear for on the carriers.

Each carrier is like a small city. They are so beautiful. I fell in love with navy warships when my family went to the USS Alabama in Mobile, AL. A beautiful ship and also got to see the USS Drum. Since then I’ve been to as many ships as possible. I want to tour a modern nuclear submarine. I’ve been in a Los Angles class sub and a Seawolf. I would like to tour an Ohio class sub, but they aren’t very keen on letting people on those.

I was stationed on the Nimitz. That thing has a very busy workspace. Living with an airport a few decks above your head made it a little hard to sleep at times. And yes it was crowded. We spent most of the year out to sea and worked 12 hr days 7 days a week while out to sea. Lots of drills. The food out at sea was very good though. Lots of steaks and shrimp and the like. You could even have chow at night. The biggest issue I had a problem with was the racism that was rampant onboard. Lots of gang activity too. I hope that's not the way things are now.

      1. Literal cheating assuming the US Navy would allow a "cruise ship" to sail through an exclusion zone, much less within eight miles of a carrier during an active war.
      2. Accurate. Unless the entire strike group is consistently banging active radar, modern Diesel-Electric submarines can effectively move undetected through CSG's without submarine escorts.
      3. Presumably ditto, but relatively few details were released as to why the CSG's ASW exercises didn't work.
      4. I can only find one and most accept the idea was to deny the soviets proper understanding of American ASW protocol, and thus force the Soviets to adopt incorrect submarine doctrines that would better protect CSG's during wartime.
      5. This one is total bullshit that gets cited way more often than it should. Gen. Riper didn't use unorthodox tactics to win in Millennium Challenge 02, he outright cheated; doing crazy shit like *firing more exocets than existed at the time* to down vessels in the opening brawl, or not using radio communications at all because he can totally communicate with his hundred vessel combat group using flashing light morse code messages and motorcycle deliverymen alone.

we are discussing about supercarriers when in a few years we can launch a nuclear warhead using a railgun at mach 5 speed with unmatched precision and sink theese ships from land. also only high altitude stealth bombers will be useful against a real war with a superpower. in wartime we will probably have also a "orbital space war" where every nation tries to destroy the comm-sat of their enemies. orbital weapons will also be developed in no time.

I found it funny when he trie d to insinuate that the Chinese are developing supercarriers, when their only "aircraft carrier" is something they jerry rigged out of an out of date Soviet ship they bought for scrap metal. The Nimitz was the best in the world from the 70's until now and the Us is already building something much bigger and better, while the Chinese are using something they get third hand from the Ukraine, who got it from the USSR.

The Ford Class is an awesome ship, and will likely go on to be the ultimate in Carrier technology.
But I did have a few small issues with the Video.
    1) The Queen Elizabeth Class have been designed to accept a catapult Launch system, which may be deployed on the ship (or both) at a later date. But given the fact both vessels were designed specifically for STOL operations, more specifically the F35B a catapult system was deemed not currently worthwhile. The Capability was designed into the ship however.
    2) While the F35 is a predominantly US led development it is not entirely US designed. The UK is a major contributer in Tech and design personell to the aircraft. I know for a fact that many aspects of the aircrafts electronics and life support systems were taken from developments pioneered during the Eurofighter programme... how do I know this? My brother was one of the lead engineers on Eurofighter and has been working on F35 for years... and no, I do not know specifics, little thing called the Official Secrets act. This is not to say the UK is *the* major contributor, it is not, but it *has* made several valid and valuable contributions to the programme. Current estimation is that around 15% of every F35 is British designed.... not a lot admittedly, but designing and building 5th Generation aircraft is not a cheap thing, and hell, given the US's tech lead 15% is a pretty good ratio.
    3) One Gerald D Ford Class has thus far cost more than both the development and the Hull and Equipment cost of the Queen Elizabeth Class, with plenty of change, hell one Ford is going to cost more than both QE class [lus their Air Wings! Probably not an issue for the US Navy... but definately one for the Royal Navy :)
    4) 4300 crew? Pah... Queen Elizabeth has a sailing crew of 700.... Air crew and the like will add more but from the figures less than a thousand. But then the Royal Navy dont have the numbers of the USN! That is one *highly* automated ship. Worries me actually, because low crew numbers are great in peace time but I do wonder if the damage control and the like will be adequate in war time.... only time will tell (though hopefully not!).
The TL;DR version is really, dont try to compare US Carriers with anyone elses, because no one else can *afford* US style Super Carriers! Despite being a proud Brit I know the Queen Elizabeth will not be as effective a platform as a Nimitz, let alone the GDF.... but she will be (for the moment) better than anyone elses *except* the US!

    So basically:
This is a ship the size the weight of a skyscraper, with so much armor the US government had to classify it(at least 8 inches, could be all the way up to 12 AND, 2 and a half extra inches of Kevlar over vital spaces), it has a nuclear reactor so strong it generates the same energy as 1/2 a lighting bolt constantly, it has the most modern radar of any aircraft carrier, it can carry up to 75 F-35s(bruh) and it uses f*cking magnetic fields to boost the fighter jet's takeoffs.
And you’d think a ship the size of 3 blocks and 100.000 tons wouldn’t move so quickly, right?
Well this thing moves at the very lest 35 miles per hour(56 kilometers per hour) and it could easily reach 40 miles per hour or possibly more (64+ kilometers per hour)if you pushed the reactor to it's limit.

The US does not have 19 carriers. Including the Ford there are 11.
No, amphibious assault ships are not aircraft carriers. Their aircraft only support ground troops. Aircraft on carriers also engage in air superiority, deep strike, ASW and command & control.
If you want to argue that LHDs like the USS Wasp are carriers, then nearly every ship in the Navy is a carrier. Nearly all could have an F-35b or an AV-8 stationed on them.

    • @Poctyk

They need the size (40k tons) to carry over 1800 Marines, a full regiment, plus all their gear and landing craft.

Technically true. They are carriers. They launch planes. They are not sea tenders. They are bigger than some countries actually Aircraft Carriers. And their air complement is nothing to scoff at (and better than one AC).
Seriously, their current air complement is more potent than US fleet carriers in WW2 (not jeep carriers, but actual fleet carriers) and are about the same size.
Any other country will call it an Aircaft Carrier.
