An aircraft carrier is typically the heart of any modern naval fleet. Though the world is most familiar with American-style supercarriers, there are in fact a variety of aircraft carriers with varying missions in service around the world. Today we’ll look at the tiniest, in this episode of The Infographics Show- The World’s Smallest Aircraft Carrier, the Chakri Naruebet.

After watching this video and our video about supercarriers (ua-cam.com/video/6Rf-y5d_tlo/v-deo.html) - which is your carrier of choice?
the US spends too much on defense and too much per plane for carriers, would be better off with 15 new smaller carriers then "10" minus of the over budget "ford" class.
The light one then carry it with F-35B stealth jets this is what the Japanese did to their Izumo class possibly the South Korean Dokdo
@@EpicThe112 isn't Japan prohibited from making aircraft carriers?
You should make a video about project habakuk. I don't know if I'm spelling it correctly. The facts on that "ship" will blow your mind
If it comes down to which is best, I would go with the Ford-class. But lets say, if I was leading a military, I would go with the Queen Elizabeth (when its fully equipped).

and had a couple of Field trips on her (The HTMS Chakri Naruebet).
Yes she is very small and outdated.
And even though she is the only Aircraft carrier we have, But we're very proud of her.
She is the best in Disaster relieve mission. (And that's what she can only do T_T.)

As Half Russian Thai I would say something... She is the only one Carrier that the entire South East Asia Navy ever had... XDD
What ship to select and how to design her is mission oriented. For Thailand's needs this sounds like a great ship, especially for the money. It's not a world beater and not meant to be. It serves as a rescue, relief and coastal defense platform. As the son of the man who designed (in the larger sense) and signed off on ships of offensive and defensive capability and all their different weapons and radar systems up until the Aegis cruisers for the U.S. Navy I think this little wonder is perfect for the Thai.

HTMS Chakri Naruebet was not a ship to honor the royal family, but was a ship approved when the royal family was in power to manage Thailand at that time. But the name Chakri Naruebet was taken from the word Chakri, which is the name of the current royal family of Thailand. At that time, the Prime Minister but named Chakri Naruebet according to the wishes of King Bhumibol Adulyadej which is the most loved by Thai people
you realize carriers don't go to sea alone right? I mean you understand that a Carrier is a fleet ship. Thailand also isn't a blue water navy as such isn't a ship designed to operate like an American Carrier.
So such a carrier is for regional use. Would normally travel in a small fleet that includes extra offensive and defensive capabilities.
Even though she couldn't match with any superpower carriers but she've been serving our nation's mission so well and yes.... we proud of her .
Having an aircraft carrier is still considered a privilege beee proud of ittt not many countries have one

Actually, the Harriers have been retired since 2006, with it only using helicopters now. It even says so on the Wikipedia page. You guys are also pronouncing the name wrong. The main use of the carrier was for disaster relief, with it also being used in joint military exercises and as a show of force against Cambodia that one time. The ship was purchased after a Typhoon hit Thailand, and that was when the military realised that their rescue ships are not up for the task of rescuing people. The royal family barely uses it.
J4CK_ I think this channel has been going down hill for quite some time
J4Ck its ok if your jealous that America is better and you guys aren't
Yeah we retired Harrier since 2006 cuz there is no spare parts left to use. And Chakri Naruebet is in fact a helicopter carrier right when it was built. Harriers are just an optional feature.

It’s a good stepping stone to larger designs. The real value however is being able to train new aircrews, pilots, & sailors, it takes years of training to effectively conduct carrier operations. The Thai CV is the big fish in a little pond: The Gulf of Thailand. It doesn't have to rule the world, just The Gulf of Thailand. And, the only two other countries are Cambodia and Vietnam. Think of it like a Coast Guard ship in the USA. Its job is search and rescue, anti-terrorism, anti-smuggling (drugs), and anti-piracy.

It's kind of mind blowing how a nuclear powered ship only needs refueling every 20 years.... WHAT?!
Yeah, but refueling takes about 3 years.
Murican tech
Danklord 69 not really the first to do it was the soviets
The United States has since then far surpassed any other nation in terms of naval capabilities in general, I'd assume that's what he meant. Because the first nuclear powered ship was a Soviet icebreaker or something I believe.
What's so surprising? Nuclear energy is actually considered one of the most efficient and abundant sources of modern energy on Earth. It's the reason why so many developed nation use them especially Japan. Huge source of energy in a small package.
yostar: take notes fast that aircraft carrier can be a LOLI!
Thailand : I have aircraft carrier it's the biggest in South East Asia.
USA : I have aircraft carrier that biggest in the world.
When you realize the amount of money the USA spends to stay ahead of everyone
@snipe69 Your comment sounds extremely relatable today
Well, Thailand or any SEA nation doesn't need an AC that can sink modern AC anyway, except for purposes of humanitarian, offshore patrol, combat support, ...
Her main purpose isn't to carry the Royal family or defend the coast of Thailand, but her main purpose is to conduct rescue and other humanitarian aid around the country and probably help other countries as well. So, we would probably bought a new ship if we have threat coming to Thailand,un like US,China,UK,Russia,Japan,Korea etc. That needs a large and advance carrier to protect and attack. Hell, even when the Thai government bought subs from China the people of Thailand strongly disagree with the idea of that. I understand that some of the information you find might be inaccurate.
Humanitarian aid would be better suited for a hospital ship not a warship and prestige is fairly common since back in the day any nation that could did build Battleships for just that reason. Not trying to insult you but isn't every nation around China gearing up for war against china a Carrier no matter the size can still be useful
seth Thomas but those ship can’t endure the high sea state like the Chakri Naruebet do.
Highly agreed, the information in this video is inaccurate about being use to carry Royal family, it is an armed floating hospital and rescue ship not a yatch

this carrier is so cute..
Well it does not stack up well against super carriers but compared to Thailand's neighbors it would compare more favorably so I think it has a strategic purpose.
Blech, I hate the 'nuclear ships range is effectively unlimited' hyperbole, because that is what it is. A Nuclear powered ships range is NOT in fact unlimited. Some things to consider:
1) Normal Maintenance: Nuclear powered vessels require about 30 - 40% more maintenance on top of Diesel or gas turbine vessels. Not only that but because of the specialist nature of that maintenance it is more expensive. As a result Nuclear powered vessels HAVE to spend more time tied up undergoing normal maintenance. This maintenance HAS to be done, the least thing you want is for your ships reactor to start running away on you because you have not adequately maintained it. Very good way to lose the ship and potentially its entire crew.
2) Nuclear carriers DO in fact require fuel: The ships themselves may only require refueling every 2 decades, but their AIRCRAFT need something other than Unicorn farts and Angels tears in order to take to the skies. As a result the ship still has to take aboard fuel. The same goes for supplies, and I mean everything, from replenishing ammunition to food for the crew. It all still needs to be supplied to the ship. Now while the USN is very good at underway replenishment, this still leads to another issue.
3) Crew rotation: You have to get crew on and off the vessel, they still have to be given shore leave, etc etc. Best time to do this, is while in dock, you know, resupplying....
4) Ever seen what happens to the hull of a ship that stays at sea for too long? Fouls up like you wouldnt believe, even modern anti fouling techniques will not work for ever as they degrade over time. As a result all ships will require their bottoms be scraped free of barnacles and the like, and those anti fouling measures being replaced. And yes, this IS important, depending on the hull it can knock off 5 - 10 knots from maximum speed.
The 'nuclear ships range is effectively unlimited' is the kind of trash you expect from people who know very little about what maintaining a warship entails. Fuel is only a small part of the overall picture, and not even the most important part when it comes to deployment times.
In the future when depicting an Aircraft Carrier please remember to put the superstructure on the Starboard (right) side of the ship.

Wow shocker, the ship designed for saving lives from natural disasters isn't as potent as a massive American warship
She used to carry Harrier jump jet fighters . They wore out.
In 2005 when the earthquake and resulting tsunami struck Sumatra and Thialand the US Navy immediately sent a Nimitz Class to aid in disaster relief. Some way (French iirc) responded "what are the going to do, bomb them". It was then explained to him just how much fresh water a day the ship could put out. Just how useful the task forces choppers would be. And just how many rations they carried on board.
How is the massive American warship potent? Didn’t they lose against a bunch of rice farmers?
That and they always seem to be colliding with things and catching fire... or being snuck up on by Chinese or Swedish submarines.
Bartonovich52 haha true
Now Chakri Naruebet has no aircraft. But Sea hawk helicopteres are on duty.
Thing is even in the event of a war with another carrier bearing enemy, the ship wouldn't be as vulnerable as they say, as usually these ships navigate with an escort of many other ships which could be the ones to defend It from threats from the Air.
Incorrect, it is the smallest carrier in service, the smallest carrier ever (to my knowledge) would be the Bogue class light-carrier at 496 feet or 151 meters.
Correction: The Long Island class would be the smallest at 404 feet or 123 meters.

Im sorry but your generalisation with the ramp design is wrong, harriers can take off vertically, so a ramp would help if full fuelled and loaded,
also the carrier in this example is 16 knots but HMS Ark Royal and Illustrious can go up to speeds of 30 knots, the new QE class of AC for the royal navy has travel at speeds of 25 and over (Tsecret),

Chaiyo ! From Thailand
As a Thai person, I'm sad that our military is so puny compared to other countries XD
Only Thailand has an aircraft carrier in the South East Asia. That's why their neighbor countries are envy about this.
Lol trust me nobody is envious of that.
Aircraft carriers are vulnerable to supersonic or hypersonic anti ship missile, so newly industrialized countries would see them as a waste of money instead. Light carriers such as these, however, are good for disaster relief and counter insurgency though.
Marvin Banzuela, the US Navy knows how vulnerable carriers are too. Of course "missile spam" can sink any surface vessel if the defense systems are overwhelmed (e.g. Falklands War), they've "lost" carriers in exercises as well to submarines and to small attack boats on suicide runs. The latter exercise being the highly controversial "Millennium Challenge 2002".
But for the foreseeable future the carrier is here to stay until someone is dumb enough to sink one and bring the might of the US down upon them.
@@marvinbanzuela6336 "super sonic or hypersonic" not if the kill chain is broken, the missile will have track the carrier, keep the carrier locked, avoid getting shot down by escort ships or carrier aircraft, defeat electronic warfare measures from multiple ships, and physical counter measures,
It's not very easy, just keeping the missile locked on target will be challenging as multiple destroyers, cruisers and the carrier itself try spoofing the missile, and if that fails the Cruisers and Destroyers will emit signals to make it's signature larger to cause the missile to be confused and redirect to a non carrier vessel
Nah, it can still be overwhelmed. The point of having aircraft carriers now is having enough of it. So the enemy knows even if they managed to sink one, five will make their way down and starting raining airstrikes on the country. Now that is something nobody in the right mind wants.
If you only have one carrier and you build your entire navy around it, then good luck to you no matter how good it is.
But can it fly in the air and be invisible like in the avenger movie?
it's so small, that might be doable. lol.
Oooh how cute... I want one!

Im glad you talk about chakri Naruebet thank you
Drink every time he says Chakri Naruebet
i think Chakri Naruebet should have decommission or sold off, here why
1. She pretty much obsolete now with lagging electronic warfare, no longer have Harrier Jet and costly maintenance making her a money sinkhole in Royal Thai Navy
2. A newer LHD could do the same job (Disaster Rescuing mission, Air-support and Stationing in Gulf of Thailand) with less cost and fitting the need of Thailand main strategy which is Defensive.
3. the Airbase around the southern part and eastern part are able to cover the objective area with F-16 and newly JAS 39 Gripen whether to support our Navy or maintain air-superiority in our owned territory. And we don't really need such a offensive power from CV
4. if we can sold Chakri Naruebet( or salvage and sold), Royal Thai Navy could have more fund to focus on their newly Frigate and Submarine from Korea and China or even afford a new LHD.
5. again today she just an expensive vessel of thai's royal family, a symbol of their power and wealth and military propaganda.
0:02 Thailand in future, submarines are heart of naval fleet (mean 3 such submarines made in China lol)

Someone said this is not aircraft carrier because there is no aircraft land on this ship but you're wrong because there are many helicopters land on this ship. The purpose of this aircraft carrier is not use in war but join in disaster relieve mission like Tsunami. If there is war, this aircraft carrier still usefully. Soldiers transport, supplies and air support(Helicopters support) is what this ship use for.
I think most countries wants to have an air carrier to project their air power for air defence but very few countries could afford to do so financially. So it is impressive that Thailand owns one.👍
Pride of my country
Given this seems to merely be an excuse for making utterly irrelevant comparisons with 100,000 tonne supercarriers, what are the respective costs?

Because of the importance of the Indian & Pacific Ocean Trade, it makes perfect sense for Thailand to have an Aircraft Carrier for its ‘Coast Guard’. Its better to be Prepared for something rather than nothing & I wouldn’t mind sharing tech modern enough for defense, not offense.
