It's 10.30pm Tuesday night 12/03/2024 and I've just flicked the T.V. over to Ch 9 in Sydney. They were showing The Raspberries "Go all the Way" I thought "Why are they playing that?" "Is Eric touring soon?" Then I thought "Oh no he hasn't died" "Has he?" My fears were confirmed by the news voice over person. "Eric Carmen was 74" Now I can't stop crying. Yes, he's been gone now for 5 months as I'm just listening to this reaction video. It just breaks my heart. I'm 68 years old now, every time I hear this song my spirit leaps, it's like I'm a teenager again & I feel so alive. Nobody stirred a girls desire like Eric Carmen. RIP.
RIP Eric Carmen. I heard the sad news yesterday. This was a 1972 hit Harry. I was a 10 year old boy then, and loved this song because it rocked. This song was on a K-Tel (compilation)album that I had back then. The Raspberries were four kids from the Cleveland area that broke through and made it big. They were the next generation after the Beatles and greatly influenced the Power Pop genre. The 70s were a great time to grow up and the music was SPECIAL!
The Raspberries and Badfinger were the Beatles' power pop successors in the early-mid 70s. They were recreating the sound of the early period Beatles 1964-66 before the transition into psychedelic art rock with Sgt Pepper.
Yes, the Raspberries and Badfinger, but also Big Star, the Flamin' Groovies, and the Dwight Twilley Band. All of these were carrying on the power pop sounds of the Beatles, the Kinks, the Zombies, and others.
God this brings back good memories. My brothers and I, all in our teens, were just obsessed with this song. A true Beatlesesque banger that I guess appealed to our emerging libidos lol. And Carmen had a successful solo career, with songs like All By Myself and Never Gonna Fall In Love Again. Thanks. for the memories and the joy Brother Harri!
His biggest hit was All by myself, but I liked so much "Never gonna fall in love ag ain", later on he had a comeback with "Hungry Eyes", for Go all the way, I have to ship it from the US to Germany, 3 weeks I was waiting to get this lttle record then...lol.
I am from North Central Ohio, snd and the Raspberries (ftom Cleveland) were considered local heroes. This is one of the greatest power pop anthems of the 70s. I often wonder how big this group could have been had Eric Carmen not left for a solo career.
The analog amps' sound is part of the early 70's charm. It's recorded like that on purpose. Apart from Eric's awesome vocals, and the ripping Guitar riff, I've always been impressed by the sound quality of the Drums. RIP - Eric Carmen
Featuring the great Eric Carmen, also had a great solo hit in the movie "Dirty Dancing" with "Hungry Eyes". His first solo hit "All By Myself" was also a hit for Celine Dion. Two other songs of his were hits by Shaun Cassidy "That's Rock 'n Roll" and "Hey Deanie". Eric's versions were great too.
This song used to be played at our school dances along with Exile Kiss You All Over and Bad Company Feel Like Making Love. Awww...the 70s when you just enjoyed the music!
Great piece of mid-70s power pop by one of the bands that invented the genre. Lead vocalist is Eric Carmen who had a big hit as a solo artist a few years later with the song "All By Myself."
Hi Harri! Thanks for reacting to this! Just want to share this memory with you! My older brother and I used to listen to the radio a lot when we were in our teens and when this first came on the radio my brother got excited at the beginning! He thought it was a new Stones song and then when it went into the softer part he was disgusted! It made me laugh SO much! I personally think it’s great! My brother liked heavier rock music than me! Anyway thanks for this! Peace and Blessings to you and your family from Australia.
This recording the band sent in as a demo. The record execs loved it so much, that they released pretty much as is. That's was why it sounds the way. Fidelity wise there were much better sounding, but not all with that energy and sense of immediacy.
Great pick! Another of those early '70s classics that seemed to seep into my subconscious mind and rewrite my DNA a little bit, to the point where I can't remember a time when I didn't know and love the song.
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Eric Carmen wanted this song mixed the way it was (almost no stereo separation) so it would sound good on the AM radio. Great song!
I love this song. The lead singer Eric Carmen had a successful solo career as well. He was a classically trained pianist and his first hit “All by Myself” was based on the theme of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto #2. That’s why I love that song also, the beautiful piano piece running through it.
I had the 45 and LOVED this record, too. He used Rachmaninoff twice---"Never Gonna Fall In Love Again" was lifted from another piece by Rachmaninoff, which I can't recall now...safe to say he loves those key changes and gorgeous melodies---who can blame him?!
Without a doubt, my all-time favorite band...not only from the 70s, but of all-time! Eric Carmen was America's Paul McCartney... making The Raspberries the American Beatles. This was without a doubt their best song! Thanks for your reaction!!
The "bad quality" of the song is actually built-in compression. The song was heavily compressed by producer Jimmy Ienner, in response to Raspberries' leader Eric Carmen's desire to maximize the "energy" of the sound. The song blasted through old AM radio and juke boxes, in those days before satellite / Internet broadcasts and MP3s. Some newer power pop bands, such as the Arctic Monkeys, still use limiters/compressors in smaller measure to amp up their audio delivery. Some listeners like it, some don't.
Cassette tapes were known for very trebly and tinny sound if they did not use Dolby noise reduction. Odds are good this song is a 25th generation re-recording and most versions were not dubbed with Dolby
This was recorded in 1972 at Abbey Road Studios on Capitol Records and went to #5. The 45 I have sounds the same as what you heard but I agree with you about the quality. Eric Carmen went on to have a solid solo career. Songs like "All By Myself", "Hungry Eyes", "She Did It", "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again" and more. Thanks for the reaction Harri. 👍
Jim Bonifanti, the drummer, when interviewed years later couldn't recall recording "Go All The Way" at Abbey Road Studios. He wasn't sure which tracks were done at The Record Plant in NY and which were recorded in London. Man, he must have been smoking some strong stuff. LOL.
I always loved this song and this band had many great hits, definitely takes me back to my teenage years! These 70’s songs had so many sexual innuendos and we probably listened to it on AM radio which was terrible sound
OMG, sir! This is one of my 5 fave pop/rock songs! You're right, sir - the girls LOVED it, not least because the lead singer is the GORGEOUS Mr. Eric Carmen. A couple of his solo efforts you may want to check out, sir: "Hungry Eyes" & "All By Myself". He always seemed like he was singing to his listener PERSONALLY. Now, for the ULTIMATE "go all the way song", sir, you MUST check out "Paradise By The Dashboard Light", by Meatloaf, Official Music Video. It's a real TREAT for the ears AND eyes! Thank you, sir, for taking me back to those "Tiger Beat" mag years!
As per my comment below I think this song appealed to teenage boys more than girls for sure. As for the sound quality, to me it sounds great because back in the 70s all we had were 45s and other crappy recordings. What a pleasure to listen to this in headphones, I think it sounds great!
In the early 70's, The Raspberries (from Cleveland Ohio) and Badfinger (from England & Wales) defined what Power Pop was all about. And both would acknowledge that their mentors were The Beatles. Raspberries front man and lead singer Eric Carmen, had the McCartney looks and mannerisms down pat. And I absolutely loved them, starting with this hit song from 72. Great observation about the song's production, Harri for it always got panned by many people. But whatever the producer Jimmy Ienner had intended, the song came out sounding great in a mono portable radio. Some radio stations would put a bit of reverb and echo, as well. And that opening.......I still say it stands right up there with the beginning of Layla as a bright, energetic opening for any rock/pop song ever recorded!
Great American Power Pop. This single was mixed for AM radio. Mono stacked tracks. Capitol Records wanted this single to be their first hit single. Very AM radio friendly at the time.
I think you're thinking more of Badfinger. I don't think the Raspberries had anything directly to do with the Beatles. I vaguely recall some comment by John about this song, saying "it's the best thing Paul's done in years," but I may just be imagining it.
This was just a small talented band from Cleveland Ohio. Eric Carmen, Wally Bryson, Jim Bonfanti (great drummer), and David Smalley. They would play the Hullabaloo club in my town ... but I was too young. They had 4 songs, I believe, that charted. Here's a clearer sounding version. ua-cam.com/video/byFGKHVt59A/v-deo.html
Anyone want to know "The Bible" of power-pop? This song is IT! The legendary (from Cleveland) Eric Carmen and friends! Brilliant structure to this song. Obviously Beatles- and Brian Wilson-influenced.
Late 70s in college there was a radio station that played full albums at midnight on fridays or Saturdays. Only break was to flip it over. Recorded several, poor college kids couldn't buy them all. Did buy a few like Yes, but it doesn't have late night dj telling use we were close to the edge, going to fall off. No not quite
Harri ... this is a young Eric Carmen, the Dude that gave us 'All By Myself' And there are better versions of this😎 Do yourself a favor and listen to his 'I wanna be with you' ... another great tune👍
Song sounds best in mono-a fuller sound-summer of 72 I remember well. It was one of those cruisin songs you turn up if you heard it on the radio driving around. Sounds like a song that your beau would play while you are making out with him in his car. Back then you better be home before your parents found out what you were up to.
Personally, I prefer Let's Pretend (1967), but they had a trilogy of hits with that, this one (1972) and I Wanna Be With You (1972)...You can find them remastered, but the sound quality will still be close to the same...Let's Pretend is a much cleaner song even though it is 5 years older and doesn't have the radical riffs in it. Viva la K-tel!
Yes! Classic Rock from my Generation....Great Song....from 1972!!!
1972. The key ingredient is the great voice of Eric Carmen who in 1975 had the solo hit ALL BY MYSELF.
I love the Raspberries
This song got a freaking TON of airplay back in the early 70's, and we were happy little campers as a result!
Song was from 1970...and they recorded their music very raw. Best power pop rock ever. These guys were just as great live !
The Raspberries and Badfinger were the Beatles' power pop successors in the early-mid 70s. They were recreating the sound of the early period Beatles 1964-66 before the transition into psychedelic art rock with Sgt Pepper.
Yeah, I especially love Badfinger's songs catchy, Beatles-esque fun!
Yes, the Raspberries and Badfinger, but also Big Star, the Flamin' Groovies, and the Dwight Twilley Band. All of these were carrying on the power pop sounds of the Beatles, the Kinks, the Zombies, and others.

Yes great song. The distortion in the sound was popular in the Era. Nice guitar riffs. Eric Carmen had a very good voice.
Best opening riff ever?! I don't know, I just know I love it
Overnight Sensation is one of my favorites with beautiful harmonies ..
It was the Beatles and the Raspberries that inspired me to play music and grow my hair. Thanks for the song man.
They had another song in the same vein (but not as good) called “I Wanna be with You”. This one is iconic because of the riff.
The analog amps' sound is part of the early 70's charm.
It's recorded like that on purpose.
Apart from Eric's awesome vocals, and the ripping Guitar riff, I've always been impressed by the sound quality of the Drums.

Power Pop at its finest!! Try The Babys for more power pop.

Catchy, catchy hook. I’ve always been surprised this song made it past the early 1970s radio censors.
Great memory. Love this song. Great vocals. Thanks Harri and Imadrummin.
Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
The Raspberries were also popular with the College Crowd dude.

Got it on a CD back in 84. Crystal clear.
Then again, I had it on 45 back in the day. Pops scratches, jumps and all.

was in my late teens when this came out. and never knew how much the lead singer looked like Alan Clarke of the Hollies
Harri, it was also a big hit among the guys, rockin' guitar, and every young boys dream girl.

@@sharontesta6566 We had the crappy KTel album but it was all kinds of fun and we drove our mother crazy. Bonus! 😂

I remember hearing this on AM radio in the back seat of the car on family trips.
I met my first boyfreind at tower records buying this 45.Eric Carmen went solo and had a few hits.
The pride of Lyndhurst Ohio ,the chicks around here all really dug him

Eric Carmen was a big Beatles fan and you can see why. very Beatley.
I feel all tingly
Great riffs in their songs. They were inspired by The Beatles/Beach Boys & The Who...
This was played a lot on AM radio and a lot of us were getting into FM and less poppy songs.
Definitely a banger. Sounds fine here. You probably know his solo hit 'All By Myself', built around that Rachmaninoff piano lift.
Love ERIC CARMEN and this song with the Raspberries!❤❤❤

I was 15, living on Long Island--the perfect target audience as a guy. I was transitioning from "crush" to "date". So fine hearing it again.
you may have heard of their lead singer, Eric Carmen
Good music out of Philly area, Shondells, TODD.
