Despite their happy smiles and party image, Van Halen was anything but when the album '1984' was released and 'Jump' became a #1 single... Guitarist Eddie Van Halen wanted to play more keyboards and wrote the music for 'Jump' in 1981 but singer David Lee Roth hated it and refused to sing on it... Finally in 1983, Eddie Van Halen put his foot down - 'Jump' was going on the album and so was another keyboard heavy song "I'll wait"... This was Van Halen going into pop music and the '1984' album was a huge hit on MTV and radio. It sold 10 million copies in the US... It was also the final studio album by the original Van Halen. Touring into 1985, it was clear that singer David Lee Roth was not a happy camper... While Eddie Van Halen started writing new music, Roth decided to release an EP of cover songs solo - 'Crazy from the heat' in '85, hoping that it would be made into a movie w/ him as the star. Frustrated by his lack of interest in the next Van Halen album, the band parted ways w/ David Lee Roth and soon got veteran rocker Sammy Hagar to work on the new tracks... Hagar signed on to become the singer of Van Halen in 1986 and their next album '5150' became their first #1 charting record in the US. David Lee Roth launched his solo career in 1986 w/ the album "Eat 'em and smile"... which sold platinum w/ the singles - 'Yankee Rose' ... "Goin' crazy"... but Roth's career floundered by the 90's.
This song really does something to me. I was 25 when it came out. It's so interesting to see younger people react so positively to it. I think it has this nostalgic aura to it that no matter what your age, it hits you in the feels. There's something about the 80's...definitely one of the funnest decades for music. I WANT MY MTV!!
I have the same argument with some friends for decades. For me, no David Lee Roth, no Van Halen. Now they're touring without Eddie or David - what a joke.
@@MarioCrosby I agree. He wasn't the strongest vocally, but for a front man he was one of the best. One heck of an entertainer. He's still in great shape for his age.
I love Diamond Daves vocals and believe he’s had a rough deal with criticism of his voice over the years. He was the perfect contrast to Eddie’s highly technical wizardry with his rough, bluesy vocals and crazy swagger. And yes, athleticism matched by none in the rock world at the time
Such a uplifting bombastic classic song, seeing EVH do a guitar solo and keyboard solo is incredible. Miss you Ed RIP you are the Mozart of my generation. Thank you for sharing.
IMO this song should always be played with the title track, "1984." It's a keyboard instrumental, something like a minute long, and it leads right in on the album.
Eddie Van Halen, for me, it´s the best guitarist of all time. By the way, those jumps by David Lee Roth (the vocalist), are so well performed due to he´s a martial arts expert.
Roth’s message is very simple: Women should take a chance (“Jump”) and get to know a guy even though he’s not the best looking she’s ever seen. “Peek in” to the guy’s personality “to get to what’s real, instead of just superficial looks.
David Lee Roth is such an attraction. Eddie Van Halen was one of the best guitarist. And Angela, you are so much fun! I want to go dancing with you sometime. 😊❤
Saw them 3 times live at their peek of there career in Montréal ❤it was an excellent show ❤ defenetly one of my best songs EVER i love that song never get tired of it with PANAMA you REALLY should react to that song also
I am so thankful to have been a very young teenager in the early 80's when Van Halen became the heavy metal gods they were and am still alive in my 50's when their end came about. I was able to witness every aspect of that bands being! RIP. Eddie. You were the greatest!
I remember! What a time that was. I remember collecting some type of 8.5x11 posters of various players that year, some kind of promo deal that year. It's been forever, so the details have faded, but I remember the posters!
The band looks like they are having so much fun with this one! This song came out about the same time as Jump by the Pointer Sisters. No disrespect to the sisters, but this one was an instant classic.
Glad you are reacting to this video! It might interest you to know I went to see Van Halen in concert in 1984 in Albuquerque, NM and they performed this song almost identical to this video live on stage, kicks & splits included! It was a fantstic concert, one of the best I have ever seen. Came away with a whole new respect for Eddie's prowess on the guitar. Understand I was always a Van Halen fan, had all their albums, but man seeing them live was a whole new experience! Best part was my older brother paid for the tickets as his teenage daughter & her friend wanted to go see the concert & he did not want them going alone so I was their chaperone. Once they discovered I was a bigger Van Halen fan then they were they did not mind going with me. My niece just thought her uncle was pretty cool! I never was a big Sammy Hagar fan and I thought their early stuff with DLR was much better. Yeah Dave has kind of lost his voice and he is an egotistical jerk but it is what it is, they were much better with Dave on vocals!
Nice! This was the sound track when I was a junior in high school. "Panama" and "Hot for Teacher" were the head banger favorites, and "I'll Wait" was the sneak up on you with its greatness track.
I have heard that Roth was not excited about this song and that this was part of the arguments in the band at that time. Basically Roth told Eddie "you're a guitar player" and didn't like the fact that Eddie wanted to do more keyboards. Eddie was right, he is Eddie. RIP Eddie. I think "Right Now" is the best VH song EVER IMO. The live version from 1995 Molsen amphitheater might be the best performance of Right Now.
Here's something a little different. I really like Alex Van Halen playing the drums on this track. Speaking of drummers, I cam across The Mad Drummer awhile back. He's part of a band called Rick K. And The All-Nighters. They do largely 60's, but also 70's and 80's music. Their drummer, Steve Moore, is absolutely crazy. He is an outstanding drummer doing all this crazy stuff, and never misses a beat. You have to see it to believe it.: ua-cam.com/video/0ethgCtw9ao/v-deo.html
I remember one of the major networks putting out a video with this song attached to an NBA highlight reel. I know there are several of them out now, but this version predates all of them. I just can't find it.
When this video first time was shown on MTV it divided the hard rock fans into two camps! First one was the old school or maybe ortodox. Anyway they freaked out when the saw their guitar hero or in som circles guitar god Eddie van Halen playing on a Synth! Now why would that be so bad one might wonder? Back in the '80s at least in Europe in general you either listened to hard rock or synth/electronic music. Needless to say there was some real hate from both groups. Ok back to EVH and the Jump video so the ortodox fans were outraged while the other more like moderate thought it was cool. They thought like EVH is still an amazing guitarist this changes nothing and besides that Synth riff works for the song.
Hey, sorry to bother, but I would love to see your reaction to Sina's cover of this song. She was very young. Please check out Sina Drums. Thanks, God Bless
You don't know the definition of a hair band. Just because members of a band have long hair doesn't make them a hair band. Van Halen started in the 70's, way before the term hair band existed.
I remember not liking it when Van Halen started sounding more commercialized after their first two albums. But,I like this song, and a few others from their later albums🎸
Great band and song. Nice reaction. Van Halen isn't a hair band, however they inspired many of the hair bands that'll probably be on this guilty pleasure list.
I’m not a massive VH fan, though i’ve always enjoyed them over the years, but Van Halen are not a hair band/hairmetal, which would be in the Glam category. Long hair does not = hair band. The More You Know… 💫
Van Halen was not a hair band. That term came about for the late 80’s metal bands. Van Halen’s debut album was 1978, a long time before the term hair band came to be. They were hugely popular in the late 70’s through the mid 80’s with David Lee Roth. Even after Sammy Hagar joined in ‘85 they were still not a hair band. They were never a metal band and certainly never a hair band. Important distinctions when it comes to 80’s music.
An old dog: this album sucked. I would rather hear, "Jump" by Loverboy before this. Early VanHalen was phenomenal...then this? Ruined my senior year in high school.
Once again, no such thing as a hair band. its called Glam, and Van Halen doesn't qualify. wrong once again. Just because a musician in the 80's has long hair doesn't make them Glam (fake hair band)
As a Van Halen fan who saw them in concert 11 times over the years, both versions (even though there were three) I hated this lame ass song!!! Too much organ and not representative of who they really were.... EVH the goat of all times!
Not only one of the best Van Halen tracks, but also that of the entire MTV 1980s.
The Van Halen bros and David Lee roth were pure dynamite!
Despite their happy smiles and party image, Van Halen was anything but when the album '1984' was released and 'Jump' became a #1 single... David looking like a lion, but Barry Gibb had already done that look.
This song really does something to me. I was 25 when it came out. It's so interesting to see
younger people react so positively to it. I think it has this nostalgic aura to it that no matter what your age, it hits you in the feels. There's something about the 80's...definitely one of the funnest decades
for music. I WANT MY MTV!!
Van Halen has always been awesome. But can we, for a moment, acknowledge David Lee Roth's vocals, pure athleticism and entertainment value?
I have the same argument with some friends for decades. For me, no David Lee Roth, no Van Halen. Now they're touring without Eddie or David - what a joke.
Vocals? Good at best. Sammy runs circles around him vocally. Athleticism and entertainment absolutely, not too many better than Dave.
Dave just had that “It” factor. Saw both versions live. Dave era had that magic!
@@MarioCrosby I agree. He wasn't the strongest vocally, but for a front man he was one of the best. One heck of an entertainer. He's still in great shape for his age.

Cool to see you rocking out..Soon as I hear the keyboard it brings me right back to 13 year old me . Such a special time.
Hi Ms. D., Great group including Alex on drums.. (I could be repeating myself) David Lee is a very good rock climber.. ♠Mr.G..
David Lee Roth is such an attraction. Eddie Van Halen was one of the best guitarist. And Angela, you are so much fun! I want to go dancing with you sometime. 😊❤
First heard this walking back from class to my dorm, and someone in an adjacent dorm had "Jump" blasting out their window!
Look at that drum set wow
Saw them 3 times live at their peek of there career in Montréal ❤it was an excellent show ❤ defenetly one of my best songs EVER i love that song never get tired of it with PANAMA you REALLY should react to that song also

Eddie Van Halen is BETTER than Slash😎🥳🙂
Get it girl.
Van Halen was a great band but for me their best song was "Right Now" with Sammy Hagar on lead vocals.
This song always reminds me of the 1984 Chicago Cubs and their playoff run….they played this song on WGN-TV before every game!
I remember! What a time that was. I remember collecting some type of 8.5x11 posters of various players that year, some kind of promo deal that year. It's been forever, so the details have faded, but I remember the posters!
I was gonna say the same thing.
What a good era of music followed by the grunge era...wish we can go back to that
You are 100% correct -- this song IS iconic.
Some fans panned it. Too "pop"-py ?
Get outta here with that poop.
never get tired of hearing this...the perfect pop rock song....excellent video to boot
Great music, cool times. A real contrast to today's bland and dead boring music and style.
I totally agree with you
As I see it David Lee gets enough attention, the guy who I feel gets short shrift is amazing drummer Alex Van Halen!
The band looks like they are having so much fun with this one! This song came out about the same time as Jump by the Pointer Sisters. No disrespect to the sisters, but this one was an instant classic.
Love your singing along with the song Angela❤
Had this recorded on vhs when it was new
Ice 🍨 cream man by them 🤪
You'll enjoy it 👍
Take Care ✌️😘💗

I have two songs you should react to: What I'm Doing Here - Lake Street Drive & Woke Up - XG
Music was FUN back then...😊👍

One of the best albums ("1984") put out and one of the best album covers ever done.
Omg😂. My teen years. 16 in 84. 😂. 😢
Love your reaction ! .... they look so happy in the video, crazy that they split up the year after ! :(
React to The Cult,Long version- She Sells Sanctuary
one of my favourite childhood songs!! thanks for your reaction to this!
Awesome cool jam, seen them live in concert once, awesome show 😎👍🎤🎸
Wow beautiful moves dance, you'll fit right in to a concert show 🤘😀👌
The song title "Jump ", I equate with Van Halen but also with the Pointer Sister's "Jump(For My Love)". Both are on my play list.
Mine too
Spectacular!!! 😅
Great song, but I liked them a whole lot better with Sammy. Hagar did this song live that made me appreciate it all the more.

What a performance! The band did alright too

A classic, one of the best of this genre. Eddie Van Halen is one of the best-Colin Ward

Hey, sorry to bother, but I would love to see your reaction to Sina's cover of this song. She was very young. Please check out Sina Drums. Thanks, God Bless
Epic song
This was when life was carefree, and all the guys wanted the 928 Porche in Scarface. lol
I love this song
Everyone I hung around loved this song
Looks like you got scooped up! I see a rock on that finger 😎
She's engaged to some white dude!!
When a song plasters your face with Permagrin like are host. How can anyone go wrong?
Not a hair band.
Written by Van Halen. Produced by Ted Templeman. 40 years 🎂. Great 👍
Such a great song. I had the album. Played the hell out it
Suede Saturday Night???

Oh my goodness! I won't write anything! See you next time!
I remember not liking it when Van Halen started sounding more commercialized after their first two albums. But,I like this song, and a few others from their later albums🎸
Great song. Who cares if they're a hairband or not
Love watching you dance
Let me know and I can give you some dance lessons.
Great band and song. Nice reaction. Van Halen isn't a hair band, however they inspired many of the hair bands that'll probably be on this guilty pleasure list.
They're the first hair band. You can tell by the hair.
Like it but I prefer Hot for teacher or Panama ........
One of my favourite bike ride songs it pushes me harder through the corners 😊
You are so beautiful.
❤🎉

HAIR BAND???????
Angela you are so beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
💥🤘🏼💥🤘🏼💥🤘🏼💥
Only thing is Van Halen was never a hair band
❤
Not a hair band.
Van Halen wasn't a hair band thou.
Not a hair band!!!!!
VH is not a hair band.
Yet another song with a deceptively upbeat tune, but the lyrics tell a bleaker story.
Not a hair band

You need to stop referring to Van Halen as a hair band. It’s getting ridiculous already.
