True story. While stationed at Scott AFB, IL in 1983 myself and a couple friends went to see Yellowman at a small venue in St Louis ...Performance was top notch, but more impressive was him inviting us backstage after the show, sat and talked with us and offered us fruits to eat.Mind you he was arguably the biggest dancehall performer at this time. The man was the most humble person I ever met.Quiet and reserved...nothing like his on stage persona, but he had a natural sense of humor.Didnt drink or smoke ( at least not in front of us) and seem more interested in us being in the USAF....and he was the star!!.We hung out for about 30 minutes. Can't remember if we took pics ( back then you actually had to have a camera on hand...Kodak instamatic...lol), but it was something I will never forget. All praises due forever and always to King Yellowman #1 showman! Also respect to Eek-A-Mouse aka Smitty ( New Jack City) for passing the mic...I knew there was a reason " Mouse" was always one of my favorites.

I'm a white man, and grew up with Africans primarily Ethiopians, and some Jamaicans, went to many many sound clashes, some places I would never dare to go now lol
And 99.9% of the time I was the ONLY white guy there. I would always get tested and called white boy (lots of fights), I thought they would be pleased that I really enjoyed the music. Some would look at me up and down, thinking how crazy is this white kid coming up in this place.
It really put a chip on my shoulder.
We are all ONE race different shades, the Human race. All created in the image of God. I felt for yellowman and def relate.

I was a punk in Britain in the 70s and I was extremely lucky to have lots of Jamaican friends and while "my" music has crashed and burned the Jamaican music of the time has evolved into some of the greatest music in the world. For me the person who takes me back to my youth is King Yellowman he to me is the rawest most pure talent to come from the island . He life has been struggle and maybe that's why his music has still as raw today as it was in 1980. Bless up Yellowman and respect. What a man, what a legend!

For those who where there, we know the seventies was the best decade of music ever.
A few comments laughing at your comment that Punk crashed and burned. They weren't there. It did. There is still punk around the world but it isn't the punk of 76/77.
Jamaican music filled the void, it was wonderful, more soul, more rhythm. Two Tone took off and introduced a whole new British generation to Trojan.

Such a sharp mind. Able to freestyle any time, memorise, repeat the lyrics later, still has a full encyclopedia of all the DJs and sound systems he respects in his head, incredible mind and heart. I've heard some of his freestyles. He will get on a roll and just not stop for 5-6 minutes, and it will be full of respect and telling all how to do it right and proper and be upstanding, delivered in the most wicked rhythmic rhyming way, seemingly stepping it up another level... not many like him. I think some sound systems would not have him on because he would show them up... so formidable on the mic
