  • Finally after years of waiting for a good Styracosaurus, and holding off on potentials, I have found the one Styracosaurus to add to my lonely Carniegie Collection. Behold the Anthony the PNSO Styracosaurus!
    PNSO really makes good ceratopsians and the detail on this is incredible. It really needs to be seen in hand to fully appreciate. With its attention to anatomy and accuracy, this is a wonderful model for anyone looking to level up their collection with an updated Styracosaurus. It will be a pleasure to match the spikes with the literature too, lots of fun, and also, very satisfying to realise how good this model is.
    I am very happy with PNSO’s rendition of one of the most iconic ceratopsians, and at the same time they’ve really added to the centrosaurines line of dinosaurs. Now for some chasmosaurines!

    I love your reviews man....they make feel l'm in a classroom and the subject is: Centrosaurine anatomy l. All that information and papers you supply and the importance to details of a simple very well made toy take your reviews to another level, trust me man...!!!!...Thanks a lot.

      You're most welcome Luis and I am always happy to meet another viewer who likes my style of content, which may not suit everybody as I understand many people just want to get to the money 😊 But sharing about the science that I learn about is another way I think we can all appreciate our models even more, and hopefully get more people interested in this very fascinating topic.
      I don't dare take the honour of teaching in a classroom. I'm in no way qualified and I do make mistakes. Oh speaking of which if you love the science as well, do check my descriptions because if a viewer points out an error or adds more useful information I will update them in the description.
      Have a great year ahead!

    Putting other dinosaur models next to PNSO's just makes them look like derpy kids toys. PNSO is on another level

      I do think in fairness, that there are many other models that have been on par. The one major thing that lets them all down compared to PNSO is the paint application. CollectA and Safari Ltd have had some excellent models that I feel stand with the PNSOs, _if only_ they had much better paint apps!! 😔

      @@DinosDragons Not just the paint though. It’s the naturalistic sculpts of PNSO that can’t be matched. Ever since 2020 their sculpts have become really remarkable in scientific accuracy and “realism”. They just look like actual animals unlike any other brand.

      Look at papo pentaceratops...painting and details are stunning. At 25usd. Pnso models are great but prices are ridiculous. 2 years ago prices were quite half of nowadays... If you like styracosaurus look at collecta deluxe. Sculpt and details are great. For 20 usd. The painting is not at pnso level but the figure is big and awesome.

    My first Styracosaurus came out of a cereal box in the late 60’s. It was purple, I believe, and one of the Marx dinosaurs. After that, there may have been other Styracosaurus figures but the next one I came across was the Aurora Prehistoric Scenes Spiked Lizard(Styracosaurus) which, although all of the Prehistoric Scenes models were wildly inaccurate, they were a very welcome addition to a young Dino-lovers collection.
    The Styracosaurus was humorously molded with pointy predator teeth.
    Lots of fun stuff.
    So, this PNSO offering is another boon to those of us looking for more up to date, accurate figures.
    I’d always noticed in the more in-depth paleontological references or journals that there were marked differences within the same group of ceratopsians when skull photographs or ink renderings were provided.
    That’s a neat bit of morphological interest making them even more interesting as groups that can be appreciated for moments of individual “charm”.
    This, like the Centrosaurus, will benefit from some color blending and contrasting washes to bring the scale details to life.
    Your continued presentation of science, along with the figure reviews, makes your videos standouts from other generic reviews.
    Please continue.
    🙂

      Thanks Thomas for your sharing and your comment!
      I found it ironic that the longer we've loved dinosaurs, the more the dinosaur toys we grew up, inaccurate as they are, will have a special part in our collections. It's my friends who aren't really interested to a deep level that find it hard to appreciate them. They see _monstrosity_ while we see _genesis_ . I would love to have just one of those old cereal toys I had as a kid now.
      The morphological variety is why I find it hard to get excited by new ceratopsian finds unless of good remains. It just made sense that just like humans there would be variations across different individuals. I got tired of seeing reports of a new find, only to read in the actual journal article how ridiculously sparse it was. My favourite example of this kind of irrational exuberance is the Mercuriceratops.
      This was a pleasure to do. Styracosaurus is just bristling with spikes and I've always wanted to do a review of a Styracosaurus. PNSO's rendition gave me the perfect opportunity! 😁

      Thank you! And I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I discovered too late that my camera problems surfaced again, so there is a very slight green tint that wasn't captured. Granted mine has less green than my friend's or some of the photos I've seen on the Chinese forums too. If you do get this, whether with the very faint green that I have or the much deeper greens other collectors found in theirs, be pleasantly surprised! (Unless you don't like green 😁)

      Unfortunately I've started experiencing problems with my camera, so there are some things it doesn't capture. In this case there is a very subtle tint of green to the flanks that wasn't captured adequately, and if you liked this from what you've seen, I have no doubt you'll be pleasantly surprised when you receive yours. My friend's model, and indeed some I've seen on the Chinese forums, are a lot greener than mine, which I actually would prefer, so I think yours will show more of that complexity you'd like 😁

    Its a truly beautiful sculpt, they really nailed the horn ornamentation on this one. Though i agree with the posing on the figures, every single one is walking so it would be nice to see more behaviours on the models. I recently made a terminocavus sculpt in two feet using the front to scratch its nose, it isnt something so dymamic but would give fresh air to the new dinos for coming

      That's something I would actually like to see more models of - animals caught in the midst of doing everyday things that aren't usually depicted. These are animals, not monsters, and it would be great to see more of this. You should put photos or videos up. I fully respect and admire paleosculptors who work on a subject that isn't mainstream but a passion project 🙏

    One of the nicest Styracosaurus figures I've ever seen. Because there are not many Styracosaurus figures out there, this gets the first place easily. Hopefully I will get this in the future, but until then I want to enjoy your review and enjoy the beauty of this figure. And it would be nice if they gave a dark coloration to the back of the frill and to the nails. They always miss the nails 😔 I do have a Styracosaurus figure (I don't know the manufacturer) and in that figure, the horns are different from one another. And it looks so natural. Because even in present-day animals we don't see perfect horns. Some are short, some are different from the others. And I personally think there were Styracosaurus with that kind of horns. This is just my idea and I hope we may find some fossil evidence to prove that in the future. Until then we can enjoy these beautiful, near perfect horns. Thank you so much my dear Sir for this amazing review. Please keep up the good work. Wish you all the best ❤

      Thank you for your kind words as always Rajitha! I think we have enough evidence to suggest great variability in the morphology for the epoccipitals, such that except for extremely ridiculous cases, we can stil enjoy most of the other figures out there because there's no 'model answer' so to speak!
      No absolutes of rights and wrongs. In people and animals, as you say. Think about the short tusked elephants now. We couldn't point to them and say their tusks are too short. Likewise walruses with differently proportioned tusks.
      As long as the more obvious anatomical features like the hands and feet, and overall centrosaurine form are done properly, artists have more freedom for creativity in the horns and other keratinous features!

    • @MrRajithasandaruwan

    I reviewed the collecta deluxe Styracosaurus, which is a very nice model but is just TOO large when scaled up with the other ceratopsians, and a lazy job was done on its patterning. Anthony here is brilliant and I can't wait to scale him up with these new PNSO ceratopsians! And they really need to include a Chasmosaurus!

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 роки тому +2

      The arms and legs on that looked a little off to me, but even then I might have gotten it had it been so big. I think what irritates me is when companies declare a scale, and then make a model so egregiously off that it just throws things off for whoever was faithful to that line. In the case of the CollectA Styraco deluxe it's way too big, and the CollectA Paracertherium it's way too small!

    Another great review! The close-up shots (around 4:00, 10:00) help showcase the detail more than usual, and the breakdown on epioccipital, epiparietal and episquamosal development was wonderful. I never knew how ceratopsian spikes and frills developed and differed from each other.
    Appreciate the scale comparisons too! Am considering expanding my 1:35 collection with Collecta's Borealopelta - your review's playing a big part in that (:
    Looking forward to your next review, as always!

      Thank you Quiversaurus for your support of my style of content! 😊 The ceratopsians have always fascinated me; indeed after the sauropods, they are probably my second favourite group of dinosaurs. The ornamentation plays a big part in that fascination of course!
      CollectA's Borealopelta is still one of the best I've seen. In fact, AFAIK it's also the only other option besides the PNSO, which is surprising given how famous and complete this dinosaur is. I think you will enjoy it, especially for the ludicrously low price!

  • @luissegura1580
    @luissegura1580 2 роки тому

    Very precise point: We need more different poses for Ceratopsians, PNSO is a great company and they must improve more dinamism to their models. Very good point.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 роки тому

      Their Spinops and Sinoceratops shows they could easily do this if they wanted to. Even sublte body shifts and head tilts like the Pachyrhinosaurus adds interest. So hopefully PNSO will introduce this little tweak for future offerings. The _hard_ part, improving the detail of their sculpting, has already done, so this should be easy! 😊

  • @thomasmonroe7947
    @thomasmonroe7947 2 роки тому +1

    Upon closer examination, this will definitely be getting a repaint. There is so much scale and skin fold detail that is just washed out with almost no contrasting background color.
    A dark wash with successively lighter dry brushing….maybe but I’m thinking of just a complete dark base-coating then layered dry brushing, details, like stripping or frill ornamentation, to be provided, later.
    I will probably reverse the stripping, if I decide to include any, by using lighter tones for markings. The horn fade is a keeper but I may try to add texture for the frill horns to match the nasal horn.
    Still, this is one very well done sculpt.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 роки тому

      Thomas, I'm sure your repaint will be awesome!
      I have to say in fairness, that my camera has given me issues lately and I'm in the midst of getting it fixed. There is a very subtle layer of green that is only captured minimally on this video. That said, mine is actually a lot less green than my friend's and some other people on the Chinese forums. So you might actually be pleasantly surprised to receive yours (provided you like a green tint to yout Styraco). I for one would have gladly exchanged mine for my friend's because I like having more green!
      Reversing the striping is going to be visually very interesting! Given that most PNSO has dark stripes on light, I think having light stripes on dark is going to look fantastic. You should post your repaints on your channel!

    Great review, yet again! This was initially a skip for me since I already have more Styracosaurus models than I know what to with (and I'm eyeing the BotM one too), but I'm beginning to warm up to it. PNSO please I need to eat 😭 I hope they bring us more Dinosaur Park Formation fauna later on. I'm itching for a new Gorgosaurus, and that Edmontonia they teased well over a year ago 😫 And I hope they'll expand into the rest of Campanian Laramidia: a Bistahieversor, Hypacrosaurus or Maiasaura would be perfect. Still can't believe we've not gotten any Maiasaura toys since the terrific Battat and Carnegie models 20 years ago, despite its importance. Also, I got a scale of 1:33.3 for the Safari Pachyrhinosaurus, so I think you could scale the two, if you have both.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks O Great Allosaurus! 😁 Fortunately I don't have your problem as the only Styracosaurus I ever had was the old Carnegie Collection one. I was really tempted to buy the CollectA deluxe when that came out, but the weird legs and the ridiculously huge-for-the-claimed-1:40 size put me off.
      For the Dinossaur Park Formation, I'm hoping for a Daspletosaurus, Edmontonia, Euplocephalus, and of course Chasmosaurus. If there's any company I have hopes will fulfil our desires eventually it would be PNSO given how much they are producing and of such high quality.
      As for Maisasaura, unfortunately I think it will be rare to have any 'boring' dinosaurs without crests or other feature. I'd really like an Edmontosaurus annectens myself. Come to think of it, they could add interest ot a Maiasaura by adding a clutch of eggs, but hopefully they won't increase the price too much!

    • @swaggasaurus_rex
      @swaggasaurus_rex 2 роки тому

      @@DinosDragons 🤣 I think Alright Allosaurus would be a better moniker for me, come to think of it. Most of my Styracosaurs are gifts from friends and family. The others are the CollectA Deluxe and the Papo one. Like you, I was not convinced by the "1/40" scale that CollectA stated it was in, but I saw it in a store and could not help myself. Decent toy, but the Palaeoloxodon size if it's "1/40" is a bit bothersome. The Papo is quite nice, though with some corners cut with the proportions.
      Likewise. Plus, PNSO often produces creatures of the same formations. Hell Creek, Morrison Formation, Yixian, to name just a few. And the Dinosaur Park Formation has quite a few famous faces long overdue for a figure. The Safari Daspletosaurus is quite good though, if you don't already have it. A PNSO Daspletosaurus would be near perfect though, you are right.
      Tis the sad truth. Many of them are long overdue for a figure. Camptosaurus, Tenontosaurus, Maiasaura, etc. Companies that produce living animals often produce antelope and deer and other animals we'd consider boring, so why dinosaurs aren't given that same treatment is a mystery and a pity. I'd also like an annectens, we already have quite a few regalis toys. That's a great idea! And it's not impossible. After all, PNSO added a baby Stegosaurus and Triceratops skull with their Stegosaurus and Triceratops models. Then again, like those models, a Maiasaura with a nest would be in the infernally expensive Dinosaur Museum line, though if it is, I wouldn't mind forking over a few extra bucks.

      Dinosaurs are so special not just because they _are_ special, but for many people it's a strong link to their childhood when things were all innocent and happy. They invoke a great sense of nostalgia because of that, and personally brings back many happy memories when my parents would buy me a dinosaur book, or take me to a new dinosaur exhibition. I think that's one reason many of us collect them still as adults!

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 роки тому +1

      I have my own source in China.
      Actually, when PNSO decided on worldwide release, you got them about the same time. In fact there have been a few cases, for example the PNSO Stegosaurus and Yutyrannus, the other people who ordered from Amazon US got them even earlier than I did. I assumed that to facilitate a worldwide release, PNSO would have shipped to the West earlier than release in the East, which is why we should all get them about the same time. That's what happened for a while until recently.
      The reason you are getting them this late is because of the current pandemic situation. This has affected not just the shipping, but also the handling when it reaches you (I'm assuming you live in the States), because of port pileups. Hopefully this situation will clear up in the coming months, unless PNSO now decides to ship to you like maybe _two months_ ahead of release in Asia. Supple chain issues are affected all aspects of business too.
      Meanwhile I guess there's nothing to be done until the situation clears up. I guess someone crazy and rich enough could arrange to have new releases shipped FedEx, but really there's no hurry as the quality of the paint apps usually stay consistent for the first three months at least.

    i really start appreciating this figure more lately....i was wondering if for 1:35 it could work as an abnormally big individual like in elephants where males are in average about 7 tons but the largest male ever found actually was 10 tons or in sperm whales where the average mature whale is 16 meters long but 2 of the largest males ever found were 20 and the other 24 meters long

      I think it's very possible! Look for a post by @kalevipoeg on my Rebor Kiss review commentary section for one detailed and informed possibility. Even simpler argument, we have found a tiny % of all the animals that have ever existed of each genus. What are the chances are _just happened_ to find the biggest/ smallest example that ever lived? There is plenty of variation possible here!
      I always use a scale that is based on average consensus by reputable workers if possible, but really there is always leeway for almost anything, which is why I really like this area of study. I wish more people could use this opportunity for friendly speculation instead of angry division.

      I agree. It would be nice to have a.) perhaps a set of smaller dinosaurs sold in the 1/35 range to scale up with the majority of the PNSO figures and/or b.) some dino figures scaled up to a consistent 1/20 or 1/10 scale keeping their size (and cost) a little closer to what PNSOs figures seem to currently hit.
      Just a thought.
      Maybe even a set of 1/35 juveniles to complement their existing figures without the out of this world price tag…..

      @A Pan with No Plan: Yes the maniraptorans especially the popular ones are glaringly absent. I imagine they would not make those 1:35, since they'd want to give it the full workover with texture, detail and colour (hopefully 🤞) They are making so many that I'm sure they'll get to that eventually. Perhaps they wanted to refine their processes further till they could do them justice. I suppose these would be bestsellers so it's worth their while to do so.

      @Thomas Monroe: I'm pretty sure they won't be doing 1:35 for the popular ones like Velociraptor since they want to maximize that animal. But I do hope that smaller ones like Protoceratops can stay near 1:35 so we at least get a sense of scale, if not actually using same ones.
      Also, you definitely have a point about less expensive small 1:35 figures. It would certainly give collectors variety not just in size but price!

    Why the pnso hasn't made any raptors or pterosaurs yet

      I'm sure they're getting to it! There's no way they would not make crowd pleasers like the raptors, but they are so popular now that they can work on more variety, and I'm actually happy for that. I would be happy for them to continue improving their processes too because then I know when I finally get the raptors, they will be super amazing.

    Should indeed be smaller, smaller than the centrosaurus. I'll leave it for later, maybe. We'll see.

      It definitely is too big for 1:35 by any stretch of the imagination, especially using the Trike as a gauge. The consolation is all that realistic scale detail which can be afforded. But I hate breaking up the pattern!
