  • A laptop came into the shop after the customer's son spilled tea into it. He didn't initially report the spill; he tried to handle it himself. Eventually, however, the laptop began to malfunction: it would only stay on if you press the space bar at least every two seconds.
Before bringing the laptop to me, the customer tried putting it into a bag of rice and setting it on the radiator to dry it out.
Prior to the work shown in this video, I disassembled the laptop to see if any liquid remained inside or if anything major was damaged. During that process, I only found a small amount of tea (one spot near the right speaker, another spot near the cooling fan, and some of the dust in the cooling duct had become a solid mass) and a lot of rice and rice-related dust.
I cleaned it out and put it back together, but the malfunction remained. The keyboard appears to have been damaged by the liquid and needed to be replaced. The good news is that the keyboard contained nearly all of the liquid, likely preventing much more serious damage to the computer.
On this computer, the keyboard is bonded to the top plate / palm rest assembly with numerous plastic rivet-like things, which are actually just plastic bosses that have been melted after the keyboard was put in place.
While it is possible to cut off those plastic bosses, put a new keyboard in place, and then try to re-melt what remains of the bosses to attach the new keyboard, I was not comfortable with that sort of destructive repair. Instead, I recommended replacing the entire top plate / keyboard assembly. This video shows that process.

Hi! Can you tell me where can I buy new keyboard for this notebook? And is is it necessery to change the whole keyboard, when I have just two or three buttons with mulfunction? Thanks for your answer.

I bought the palm rest and keyboard assembly on eBay. I did see people selling just the keyboard, but replacing only the keyboard would require the (rather difficult) procedure of cutting or melting the plastic 'rivets' that hold the keyboard to the palm rest and then re-melting or gluing the new keyboard back on. I have not yet successfully done a replacement like that.
It looks like it may be possible to replace individual keys. Have you seen this video from PC Monkey? ua-cam.com/video/nLTXPeaJbaQ/v-deo.html

Can i replace my Acer Swift 3 Sf314-54G no backlit keyboard (factory new) with the backlit one?

I'm not certain, but I suspect the answer is yes. Someone commented on this video about a mystery ribbon cable socket on his motherboard that didn't have anything attached. I suspect that is for the keyboard backlight, which *should* mean that the motherboard will have the keyboard backlight power socket regardless of whether or not your laptop originally came with a backlit keyboard.

Yes. Once you've removed the battery, the trackpad should be easy to replace.

Hello sir , Great vid! I have the same issue and tried to fix it by drying it without much success. The computer is still functionning fine but the keyboard is a mess . how were you able to get the replacement part ?

Thanks! I found this one (new) on eBay. It was much more expensive than buying the keyboard alone, but it felt much less risky than the destructive procedure required to replace just the keyboard.

@@ComputerHelpNI Yeah I chose to just replace the keyboard, and it was not a good process. Because you have to pry apart the keyboard from the top housing, the little plastic pegs brake off and now the keyboard goes into the chassis when you press it.

@@mutasimrahman6833 Yes, that is a difficult repair. I've done this using a grinder to remove the old keyboard and hot glue to attach the new keyboard in-place. See this video: ua-cam.com/video/ePtpZOWIlAc/v-deo.html

@@ComputerHelpNI Wow what a coincidence! I used hot glue as well before seeing this comment, and it actually works pretty good. I would still rather spend an extra $40-$80 more to get a palm rest that already comes pre-attached with the keyboard, as there are still some parts of the keyboard that are slightly lower (not by much tho), but the hot glue diffenetly does the trick.

I'm not certain, but it might be for the fingerprint reader, which was optional and was installed on this laptop. Here is another video showing an Acer Swift 3 that has nothing connected to that socket: ua-cam.com/video/rOE8Wa5BeDY/v-deo.html

@@ComputerHelpNI thanks! i've disassembled my swift 3 few days ago due to faulty keyboard (i assumed it was the problem since i really cant have it checked due to covid restrictions here, but overview of problem was the laptop wont turn on without pressing and holding down any other key besides the power button. so i have to press and hold any key then press the power key). i've found a different socket for the fingerprint scanner, and i still cant figure out what that other socket is for. i was thinking maybe i could use it for some upgrade of sorts

@@illumi1011 Wow. Well now I wish I had that laptop in my shop so I could tell you what that port is really used for! I couldn’t find a service manual or motherboard schematic for that laptop, so I’m not sure I’ll ever know.

@@illumi1011 The full model number for this laptop was "Acer Swift 3 SF314 54 34R2." It had a fingerprint reader, SD card reader, and backlit keyboard. Could it be for any of those?

    • @ComputerHelpNI

They are probably very similar, but I can't say whether the keyboard and palm rest are identical. Usually if the model number varies, there will be some differences.

Replacing the keyboard alone would require cutting all those small plastic rivets holding the keyboard to the palm rest, and then you would need to either re-melt the plastic or use hot glue to recreate those rivets to hold the new keyboard to the palm rest. That's a difficult job, but cheaper than replacing the whole palm rest and keyboard together.
