  • After 55 years of passenger service, the R32s have been temporarily removed from operation on the NYC Subway for conductor health and safety reasons during the COVID pandemic. These legendary NYC Subway cars were expertly built by the Budd company and were well known for being some of the best operating cars in New York City. They have been replaced by the R179 cars after operating well beyond their expected service life. Enjoy these clips of the R32s in their final weeks of operation before their temporary removal from service.

    The BEST cars to operate! I loved 'em - slam-fast acceleration from a stop, brakes that made point perfect placement in the stations. We (my school car class) were trained to operate very aggressively, often holding power until 2/3 the way into a station. When necessary, I used to pump the brakes like on a car, to bring a train to a halt in a very short distance. Hope everybody was hanging on ! That didn't work with the R-46's crappy brake system.

    Too bad they had to retire during a pandemic, I kinda saw it coming and I decided to ride one March 18th (also the last time I rode the subways at all) on the (C). I noticed that day that it was difficult to find even just one train at all on the (A) or (C). Will never forget the good rides I got on the cars all my life, on the (N) and (R) especially. I remember looking out the RFW of an R32 (F) train with a friend of mine on our way back his house after a fun time at Coney Island getting on rides and stuff when we were little kids, how they sped like crazy on QBL express. So many more memories it’s too long to list it all! The train that used to be quite literally everywhere you go in the B division. RIP R32s, and RIP to one long survivor.

      @@lol-ug2ry I almost agree. They were awesome on the (G) and the (R), and should have stayed there instead of taking the R46 away from the (E) after getting overhauled. That was when, despite the advantages for us rail enthusiasts, the Queens Blvd. Express experience started declining, with everyone wanting the (F) because it kept the R46. The (V) was a good addition, but executed in a suspiciously bad way... almost like the MTA intentionally gave the middle finger to those using Lex and 53rd via Express coming from Queens. I heard a lot of the riders explaining how the route plans were so illogical, in the exact same way.

    As an operator, I always loved these trains. The workhorse. T/O's loved them, conductors hated them. But they are the most simplistic to operate, troubleshoot and prepare. When overhauled by 207th or Coney Island, these trains performed. Fast, brake well. I for one loved operating standing up in these 32s. You get a feel of going faster then you actually were. The one dislike........ the rattling in the cab. Everything made a noise.

    I'm a retired Conductor With 30yrs. When I started in 1983 the R-32 had no a/c just fans ;it wasn't until year's later they were renovated and a-c was installed. They were the work horse of the B division; that's the lettered lines. The newest trains at the time were R-44 which were on the A line and R-46 which were on E and F lines. The R- 32 out lived the 44s. In the summer time we would lock back the end doors to cool down, you could also watch out for bad guys of which there was many.

    Thank you so much for this video of the R-32 trains. I did get to ride on these trains and capture some video and still shots on my own when I visited New York last year. I liked the information about them at the start of the show. I don't know if I'll ever get to participate in any last ceremonial rides on this class of cars, but I do hope the city recovers from this pandemic sometime this summer. I felt bad about missing the last run of the R-42 trains back in February. I'm so sorry to hear about the many transit workers who lost their lives during the pandemic. They did their best to keep this city going. Prayers to their families, their friends and anyone associated with the MTA. Thank you all for your service.

    I still associate the R-32s with the N. In fact, I still consider them BMT cars. That's where they started their careers. My very first subway ride was on a shiny new R-32 N train from 36th St-4th Ave. to 34th St-Herald Square on July 21, 1965. Their blue doors and green backlit side signs made an immediate impression. Plus they seemed to glide effortlessly. When they came over to the D right after Chrystie St., they made the CPW express dash look easy.

    This was a fascinating video! I loved it. I thought the Lackawanna MU electrics set a record with 54 years of service, but the R32s beat that. However, Lackawanna electrics never benefited from a major rebuild.These trains seem to be running just fine and are completely serviceable. Why not simply keep using them? It would save a lot of taxpayer money. I wonder if riders have any idea of the historical significance of what they're riding? After 55 years these trains might be the only NY subway cars some people ever rode in. What do the spring loaded gate-like things do on the ends of each car?

    • @amtrak706
      @amtrak706 4 роки тому +1

      g bridgman Keeping these in service would definitely not save taxpayer money. These cars are very old and thus very expensive to operate. Every single part on them is beyond obsolete and has to be custom made by NYCT shops. The company that built them, the company that rebuilt them, and most of the companies that made their major components have all been out of business for decades. The MDBF of these cars is 5 to 10 times worse than the modern fleet and gets worse with each passing day. I too loved these cars, riding them my entire life on my local line here in NYC, but unfortunately their retirement was long overdue. I will miss them (and the RFW).

      @@1940limited Absolutely, Budd was a very important company in railroad history and was the source of many modern innovations we now take for granted (stainless steel shotwelding, "TGV-style" articulated trucks, etc). It's a shame they and so many others are no longer around.
      As far as the 32s though, have you ridden them in the past 20 years? They most certainly do not run "quite nicely." Again, I am a huge fan of them and would love it if they ran forever, but their day really has passed. They sound like they are ready to fall apart and are the roughest ride I have ever experienced on any train. They smash into each other when braking and accelerating, and it seems like half of the cam controller steps are permanently out of service, as the resistor banks cutting in and out are quite violent. They are also slow, loud and are notorious for excruciating brake screeching. I have no doubt they were smooth when newer though, and their sluggishness is also not their fault as field shunting was removed in the late 1990s.

In this video the R32s seemed to be running fine and looked good inside. I'm in awe of the infrastructure and how it all works and keeps working. I appreciate DJ Hammers' videos. I have no idea if or when I'll ride the NYC subways again but I love watching the videos and appreciate your responses. It's nice to know there's people around who do more than just ride the trains. Anyway my last subway ride before staying home due to the virus was actually on one of these, going home on the A train a month ago. Hopefully a few of these will be preserved but I’m not sure since there are already 4 R32s stored for the transit museum from the first attempt at retirement in 2010, and unfortunately I don’t think they will be able to specifically save cars from this extended service life batch. Jose Javi Lowered service levels (even with the C line restoration), plus the A has an excess fleet of R46s since the R179s entered service. Currently the Pitkin Yard fleet has 354 R46 cars and 130 R179s. Since the A needs around 30 or so trains during the rush hour (I don’t remember the number really well), the 130 R179s (13 trains), plus 136 R46 cars would make up the entire A fleet needs, and 12 R46 cars would make the entire Rockaway Park Shuttle fleet. 354-(136+12)=206 cars (Note: some R46 cars are in married pairs). Now the C needs around 18 trains for the full service. 88 R179s in 4-car consists (two 4-car trains make an 8 car train) make 11 trains. To make up the 7-train gap, 56 R46 cars will be rotated with the C route (8x7=56 cars). So that drops the total to 150 cars. This leaves 150 cars for a spare factor for all lines).

      The Xbox Gamer The original plan called for all of the R32 and R42s to be retired by the R160s. However due to structural issues on the R44 cars running on the expansive subway lines, those cars were retired and 222 R32s and 50 R42s were saved. The 272 cars were now meant to be replaced by the R179s.
      In the mid-2010s, plans were further changed to keep 164 cars to 2019, then 110 cars to 2020, before the rest of the fleet was to be replaced by the R211s, all for the L train work, but the plans for the tunnel work have been revised.
