- It's no secret that the Sprinter has some shortcomings when used for serious off road usage. As many owners are discovering, a heavily loaded van driven hard off road can stress the factory components beyond their original design parameters. From rutted Alpine 2-tracks, to the box canyons of Death Valley, to the rugged coast of Baja, owners are taking these vans to places Mercedes never really intended.
The Baja Bracket Rear Shock mount kit is a solution Van Compass has developed to eliminate one of the glaring shortcomings in the Sprinter's rear suspension setup: a single shear upper shock bolt. A single shear bolt has its benefits mostly in cost and ease of packaging, and for a delivery van on the street with frequent fleet service checks, this isn't a problem. Without reinforcement on both sides of the upper shock bushing, this puts a large amount of cyclical stress on the factory shock bolt. Over time, the bolts can stretch or come loose after long miles of washboards, and the bolt eventually yields at the worst possible location: right where it enters the threaded bung on the chassis. For our customers, exploring remote backcountry terrain the shock is a critical part of safe travel ensuring that the weight of the vehicle is kept safely under control in all conditions.
Our Baja Bracket is a sturdy, precision engineered solution to capture both sides of the upper shock bushing and eliminate the dangerous fulcrum effect that causes a bolt to eventually shear. The part is laser cut and CNC bent from 3/16" formed steel, fixture welded to ensure accuracy, then powder coated for good looks and longevity. A complete hardware kit and slotted holes ensure perfect fit and alignment on all vans, while a machined tubular brace dissipates the load of the shock safely throughout the frame rail. I’m driving the Dempster Highway today (coming to you via Starlink) and saw a van pulled off to the side of the road. The driver came up to my van and asked, “Do you have Baja Brackets? I don’t, and my shock broke exactly how they said it would.”
Luckily I do have them, and this experience gave me a new found confidence in this product.
It's not horrible but I'd recommend you guys need to invest into a 4k camera, camera tripod or gimbal stabilizer. Oh, I'm liking the product. An un finished option might be cool too then I could get it powder coated to match the color of my undercarriage.

ROB: I know a little late to this and not to undrestimate your engineering knowledge BUT :) I have a maybe MAX case in that I have a Sprinter 2500 170 EXT and plan to add a Tommy Gate cantlever lift to the back creating a LOT of leverage. I wonder if extending this bracket down and around under the frame rail in a "J" channel type shape along the full length and capturing the through bolts on the inside of the frame rail also wouldnt give it even more support from leverage forces.
Question for the Van Compass guys. I actually had a bolt come loose and fly off and my shock extended and was hitting the underside of the floor of the van until I noticed it following a trip to Moab. I was able to reinstall a bolt and was good to go and secure. However, since then I’ve been getting intermittent ESP light coming on and the van goes into limp mode. Any relation here you think? I am gonna go ahead and purchase the kit featured here to mitigate it moving forward either way. Just curious if anybody else has reported this issue?
I’ve installed 3 of the 2.3 kits so far. One thing I always struggle with is getting the bottom shock bolt started since the shock comes fully extended and needs to be compressed to get the bottom bolt started. Would have been great to see you do that in this video, but you skipped that step;( Can u post a quick video to show how u compress the shock enough to get the bottom bolt started?
We use a transmission jack if the van is up on the lift or a floor jack to compress the lower shock eyelet into the axle mount.
@@VanCompass I’ve tried that, but the issue is #1 when u jack up the shock to compress it, the jack hits other parts of the van. And #2, since the shock mounts on an angle, the jack causes the shock to misalign and it’s impossible to get it aligned with the bottom mount. Not to mention keeping the sp2 circuit from unwinding. The only success I’ve had is throwing a ratchet strap on the shock and compressing it that way. But that’s not ideal either. Anyway, you’d be doing me a favor to show me a step by step on the rear shock. The fronts as well if possible. But the rears withe SP2 setting are a bit more tricky. Thx!
@@Wino33 We use a center punch or screwdriver to line up the eyelet in the shock mount once the jack gets it close. Our jack gets the hole just about right. @@Wino33 Note the SP2 wont change setting once the shock is compressed slightly. It can only be adjusted when the shock is fully extended.
@@VanCompass Thanks for the video reference! For the front shock, there really is no such thing as pulling down on the front shock to get the top bolt to line up with the VC bracket. The only way i have found to compress the shock for the install is to ratchet strap it. For the front shock, it would be better if the shock arrived compressed, ziptied, like most replacement shocks, and then you can install the lower bolt and then cut the ziptie and the shock would then extend up into position. Just thinking of ways to save myself some grief;)

dude stop telling people it shouldn't take four hours. Untill you have to scrape and remove foam wire and plumbing to keep from drilling holes you don't want, you are going to give RV owners false Idea.
