    i never thought that a 10min oil change job which i done billions of time can ever turn into a nightmare like on saturday. so to you diy and even mechanics dont leave it to chance. its a good investment.

    this tool saved my life. i gotta tell ya. i bought a 05 durango for my wife to drive and tried to perform a oil change on it. WELL . my luck the filter was on sooo tight the filter wrench i had destroyed the filter cutting it in half. i spent 9hrs last Saturday trying to get it off. watching me suffer and curse lol. the wife found this video on youtube and i didn't waste any time buying the tool. once i got the tool it only took 10mins to remove the broken pc still on the block. AWESOME.

    First, I had already tried multiple methods to remove the oil filter, and in the process, I had damaged it beyond recognition. The "can" was crushed, and no conventional method would work... The Talon was my last hope so I ordered it on New Year's Eve 2015.
    When I first opened the Talon oil filter tool, I thought "no way is this going to work." It's not going to fit the oil filter on my lawn tractor... so I put it away -- for 6 weeks.
    Today, I gave it a try. Adjusted the tool to only use two prongs (screws). I had to use a drill to increase the size of the holes in the oil filter plate (used a Cobalt drill bit). Used a hammer to tap the Talon onto the filter, grabbed my trusty torque wrench, and I gave it a couple of pulls, and...
    The thing worked! I cannot tell you how happy I am. It saved me time and money.
    Great tool, and for me it was worth every penny.
    Thanks!
    Greg

    For 1 year my 1965 El Camino underwent a body restoration. The body shop had the oil and filter changed before I picked it up.
    The mechanic cranked the filter did not lube the ring and cranked it on too hard. I tried the old screw driver through the filter trick and the filter tore apart leaving only the filter base. After a couple of hours of hammer and chisel I gave up and went on line. I found Bogert Aviation's video and ordered the oil filter removal tool. It arrived 3 days later, it took awhile to get the 3 legs to fit the filter base holes. But it only took a minute or two to remove the filter base. Yeah it's fifty dollars, but how much to tow it to a shop and have them remove it? It's a great tool that saved me time and money. That is why I use the K & N filters with the 13/16 nut.

    This is a great idea, great design, and a great tool! Having tried all of my filter wrenches, the old screwdriver trick and the hammer/chisel combo, I ordered this tool since I had made a mess, destroyed the filter, and still couldn't get it off my truck. This was the only thing that allowed me to get enough torque on what remained of the filter at the correct angle and in the tight space to remove it. Many thanks to Bogert Aviation for a quality product that made my day!

    Even the shops have problems with stuck filters from time to time. I spent 30 years working as an aircraft mechanic and I can tell you that we were very careful to torque filters to the low end of the spec. and even then, we would occasionally get a stuck filter. Having a tool like this one was a real time saver.

He was was getting pissed off, not at us though. He said he was going to have a long chat with that mechanic. He felt a huge relief when we finally got it off and put the new one on. We even showed the customer that it was hand tied and not super tight.

It works the same way but is quite a bit stronger than those from just a short time ago.In fact it's twice as strong. They have also come out with a new TALON oil filter tool that will take 150% of the torque that this tool can handle. That's more than 1500 lbs. inches of torque. Just take care that the links are in a trailing position.

    Brybo86, I agree that this is a messy way to remove a filter and it isn't anyone's first choice. This is the tool that gets the job done when the other tools have crushed the filter can or the screw driver has torn the can open. The wrench you suggest is probably a good tool most of the time. When it isn't, use this one to get the job done.

  • @Compwhiz128

    I own a 1989 Honda Civic FWD. The oil filter is located underneath the intake manifold so you must reach it from the underside (talk about lack of clearance). My dad told Bogert over the phone that the holes on oil filters differ. Bogert Aviation was willing to butcher a fram oil filter just to machine special removal studs for us. We received the tool the very next day, and with a little muscle, IT CAME OFF! I would recommend stronger fittings that grip the holes as these became a bit bent.

    I would never drill a hole or otherwise render a filter totally unusable thereby turning a troublesome situation into a possible calamity if the removal fails. While the filter is intact, the motor can operate. What's interesting in the video, is the filter actually tightens @.42. So the device is shown to work on a filter which is not solidly jammed. This raises the question of whether the device could remove the filter base if it were solidly jammed.

    • @jeffro221
      @jeffro221 5 місяців тому

      You would if you wanted it off and everything else failed. Or just leave the filter on forever. You think maybe what you noted about the filter not being solidly jammed might be because this was a demonstration? Lots of reviews claim it got them out of a jam. I know, they're all made up reviews.

    816rob1, Yes a screw driver punched through the filter can does work sometimes. This tool is for all those times that it doesn't work or when( as in this example) there isn't room to make that approach work. There are lots of times that a pair of channel locks can not be used because there is no room at the base of the filter. You can see in this example that there would be no way to get pliers around the base of the filter. This method works. You may not always have room to use the hole saw like they show but if you can get the filter cartridge out, you can remove the filter. You might watch "Difficult Oil Filter Removal"

  • @Bogibar

  • @Bogibar
    @Bogibar 11 років тому

    Grassroot, The hole saw is only one way of getting to the filter cartridge. Most people try stabbing the filter first in an effort to pry the filter off. With a little ripping you should be able to tear the bottom of the filter can off. You don't have to be gentle about it. You just need to get the cartridge out. Once the guts of the filter are out of the way, the filter tool can be inserted to remove the filter.

    I broke and shredded my hands for over two days trying to remove the overtightened oil filter on my Ram 1500. I drove over 200KM to pick one up to free my truck from its oil-less state. It took more time to calibrate the tool to fit my Fram (crap) oil filter than I spent finally removing the oil filter from the deep crevasses of the truck. 20ish minutes later (and cutting open a brand new Fram oil filter to perfectly fit from the inside of the filter) I snagged the tool on to the mangled oil filter and VOILA, it came off.

    The tool I received is not the same as on the website. The pins on the tool are two zinc screws which screwed on with nuts. The pins on the website are welded on the tool and look like the same metal as the body of the tool. The problem with the screws as the pin is that the screws are too soft to do the job. They are bended at the very first try. I have to get the replacement of the screw with stronger screw. The screws are 10-32 1”. After replace the screws; the tool works fine.

    Yeah, I know the main issue is removing the filter,
    but getting the bottom off would be the hard part as
    no tool are small enough to fit in to do it. I always try
    to avoid piercing it as then you can't run the engine.
    Main thing is not to tighten so that it is a problem.
    This is why I prefer to do my own changing. Some
    shops tighten things so much I begin to think it's a
    trick they do.

      gatorftbllvr just an FYI. u can buy a replacement oil filter adapter for motors. they are attachments made for the block and can be replaced.

    • @gatorftbllvr
      @gatorftbllvr 7 років тому

      We had to order the entire top plate with not so much as a "We're sorry" from the manufacturer. Just a "oh well, you need to buy a whole new motor." So with no help from them we found a website with replacement parts and saw we could buy just the top plate. It runs like brand new. Thx!

    Why don't you just drill holes in the filter casing to fit the tool into?

    • @richardbogert7675
      @richardbogert7675 9 років тому +3

      Blacktiger, The filter can material is so flimsy that the small pins just tear the can apart. If the filter is truly stuck, it will take more torque than the can material can handle.

    No doubt a brass punch would work in some cases where you had room to get an angle on it. The best solution is to properly lube the gasket and not to over tighten the filter in the first place but when a stuck filter does happen, The Bogert Tool will be one solution with a good track record.

  • @Bogibar

    It might work if you started out that way in the beginning but no one wants to make that kind of mess on a regular basis. Once the can is crushed, it looses a lot of strength and I doubt it would work.

    OMG...Buy a K&N Oil Filter with the built in Nut. Otherwise use a oil filter wrench or wrap a leather belt around it and give it a firm tug. Always put a film of oil on the rubber gasket before putting on a new filter.

    • @richardbogert7675
      @richardbogert7675 6 років тому

      Martin, Usually, your solutions do the trick. This tool is what you use when the other methods have destroyed the filter can or mashed it so bad that it's hard to get a hold of. This tool is not for the normal oil change. In addition, this video is of the first version of this tool and the TALON is much better but does the same job.

  • @jsmcguireIII
    @jsmcguireIII 6 років тому

    I was ready to make fun of this but it actually is a good solution. I have used channel locks on the worst ones and they work with some effort but this method would let me get my breaker bar into the action and you get a purchase on solid metal. The problem is often one of access due to flanges and other things - especially on motorcycles. Accessing from the end like this defeats those problems. But the real question is: Why do people insist on over-tightening oil filters???? STOP DOING THAT PLEASE.

    • @richardbogert7675
      @richardbogert7675 6 років тому

      santacruzer, we have improved the tool a number of times since we made this first video on the OFT. The NEW TALON tool is much stronger. I made my first one more than 30 years ago while working as an aircraft mechanic. The filter was stuck. There was no access except from the top in this case. I realize that we shouldn't have to do this but it happens pretty often even on new vehicles at their first oil change.

    • @richardbogert7675
      @richardbogert7675 9 років тому +3

      ShaDoWhUnTeR ellis That's good! We get calls all the time from people that are at their whits end. They have already crushed the filter can with Channel Locks or driven screw drivers through it to twist it off to no avail. The tool that is seen in the video has undergone many changes and the two prong tool isn't available any longer. There were too many times when the torque required to break a filter loose was enough to shear the screws. We couldn't go to bigger screws because they need to fit the internal holes in the filter. By going to three prongs, we were able to dramatically increase the amount of torque we could place on the tool.

    • @richardbogert7675
      @richardbogert7675 8 років тому +1

      Dustin,
      When I was working on aircraft, we had filters that had the nut on the bottom. This was to allow a person to torque the filter to a specified torque and then safety wire. Even so, I have run across filters that we not coming off that way and even tore the nut off the bottom of the filter. Most of the time, the nut is a good feature and the filter would come off. Our tool is for the times when normal doesn't work.

    I’ve had to remove some oil filters from some shops that had to have been installed with a impact with blue loctite 🤣🤣.. never once have I had to resort to cutting a filter off.. I’ve always managed with oil filter pliers and not being weak 🤷🏼‍♂️

  • @scubadivingsince2006
    @scubadivingsince2006 7 років тому

    Look at the oil that came out of the filter, it still had several Hrs/Miles left on it. If you gave some of the room you had there to remove that filter to half the people in the comment section the world would be a better place lolz, just joking, cool tool does it come with the whole saw because I don't have that either. :) you know I could weld the same thing up with a piece of flat steel 2/3 pins and a 3/4 nut right ? :)

    • @DerWaffel
      @DerWaffel 6 років тому

      It's a demo filter. It is obviously a mockup for demonstration purposes. The saw tightens the damn thing when it's being cut open.
      Note that I do not support this ridiculous piece of metal. There's a number of ways to remove a filter that don't involve a special tool, power drill, or metal-cutting hole saw blades. If you have an engine designed by a mental case, and the filter is surrounded by a pointless metal fairing like the video? wipe the excess oil off the thing and use some thin leather like you're opening a jar. It's actually stuck? try a screwdriver through the side.
      This thing is garbage, purpose-built clutter that has no place clogging up a toolkit. if you can't turn a stuck filter, maybe get someone who doesn't have dainty ladylike hands to do it for you. If you can tighten it you can damn well find the leverage to remove it.

  • @thegreatga
    @thegreatga 12 років тому

    At first I thought this should be another fake tool. however after a little thought I've decided that this is actually a very clever tool, and a last case scenario. But, metal shavings like this are fatal to an engine, I wouldn't use a hole saw, but a special oil filter sheer tool to remove the end without all the shavings. Just one shaving reintroduced into system is total devastation, bogartaviation should include a tool to remove the end like a can opener. Excellent worst case tool

    • @richardbogert7675
      @richardbogert7675 4 роки тому

      Meroh, the filter in this video was a prop for the video and not an actual stuck filter. I can tell you that if the filter was actually stuck like so many of our customers have, the drill by itself would not do it. The video is the first one we did and the tool has improved as we got better ways to build them and make them stronger.

  • @royalsimpson
    @royalsimpson 11 років тому

    Some of you must not understand how "STUCK" an oil filter can get. Suggersting a simple "cap, socket, strap wrench" or other obvious tools to use is not good advice to give to someone who has to resort to watching this video. The rubber seals on most filters are about 1 centimeter thick, which turns into a very strong glue due to engine heat if no lube is applied prior to the installation of the new filter.

    Title should read, "Most messy, dirty and longest way to remove a stubborn oil filter." How about a gripping tool that squeezes the outside of the filter? Google "Universal Oil Filter Wrench" looks like 3 jaws that ratchet and grip the edges tightly.

    • @richardbogert7675
      @richardbogert7675 9 років тому +2

      Nobody said this was going to be clean but if you drain the filter and let it drip for a while, it's a lot less of a mess. The method of opening the filter isn't an important part of this. The hole saw is just one method and not always the best. It depends on your situation. That is spelled out in the instructions.
