I think people need to stop calling out this torture using the name Big Lick. For non competitive horse people, they don't understand this is done under the title "padded performance horses." By educating what type of horse shows support this, people can protest even if they're not in the industry.
Their front legs are terribly abused but watching their poor back legs is just as horrendous. Thank you for educating people and speaking out for poor horses.
You're absolutely correct about the back legs and hips. By the time these horses are "retired" they probably just get shot and dropped right there at the farm and buried so there's no evidence. Possibly, if they can still walk and be loaded on a trailer, they will go to slaughter auctions. Either way, they never had a chance. How these judges, trainers, and riders can sleep at night or look at themselves in a mirror is beyond me.
To anybody who is wondering if it is just a pad or anything else on the foot well obviously it is chemicals on the arm and chains may cook it into skin but also it’s not just a pad on the hoof. It’s actually a shoe filled with nails, and every time they punch the ground, it just goes deeper and deeper in until the whole entire hoof has tons of very deep holes in it😢
@@Fenn_The_Foxthey do not put nails into the horse's feet. That would cause them to become lame and unrideable. Trainers apply caustic chemicals to the animals’ ankles and cover them with plastic wrap to “cook” the chemicals into the horses’ sensitive skin. They lay the chains on while it cooks in to make it worse. Fitted with heavy, stacked shoes, the horses stand in stalls with their legs wrapped for several days. During training, metal chains are placed around the horses’ ankles, further irritating the injured areas and making each step so excruciating that the animals step higher in an effort to escape the pain. The shoes weight 8lb each.

Owners and trainers need to wear chains on their hands and legs plus wear 10lb stilt shoes with 2 feet heels and be walked around these horse tracks 5 rounds, pay to have their poor horses rehabbed and all chains, heavy horse shoes removed, pay vet fees to nurse their abused horses to good health, then, banned and prohibited from ever owning even one horse for a lifetime. People who participate in any horrific animal torture/ abuse must be severely punished to deter others from continuing animal cruelty. I am a huge animal lover and could not even watch the entire video, I was sickened and furious at all those despicable people involved in this needless horse torture. 😭😭😭
This makes me physically sick to my stomach watching all those tendons over exerting. Many of these horses are very young...they will be destroyed by the time they are 5-10 years old. These people should feel nothing but shame. That Grey horse that was bleeding had a split right on the top of the hoof by the coronet band. Very very sad.
The grey is not going to last much longer. It's already falling apart. And when it does: off to the auction, off to the kill buyers, off to the slautherhouse. It's a terrible life with a terrible fate.
They start at the age of 2, then they have the lighter weigths (still too heavy) addind a layer every time they think the horse can handle. The ones with the huge stacks are like 4 years old, as after that, they wont last much longer. So very sad, their torture starts already as foal. There is or was a video on YT about how they are trained, its way more disgusting than this involving lots of beating and torture.
@@AnnaMaria-zm8cv Billygoboy has posted videos of 2 year old classes with full stacks. And the horses aren't even 2 yet! No horse should ever be ridden that young much less tortured this way.

I wrote my state Senator about soring, stacks, and cutting a muscle in horse tails. I told him this was a subject I felt very strongly about and that I wanted to see horses liberated forever from these abuses. I got a cordial email back from him, with a government letterhead on it, saying that he was glad to know about this, shared my desire to protect animals in general, and would keep my letter in mind when these things came up in Congress. Since then, I noticed that he has added animal welfare to his list of topics that he spends time on. Thank you for your work on this subject. I pray we can end this form of abusive entertainment. Exchanging ruined horses health and lives for blue ribbons and shiny cups just isn't a fair or equitable exchange.
This is torture for these horses pls stop this practise of cruelty. People in Britain will be shocked and sickened by this cruelty. They also will boycott the states that support this until it's banned and compromised.
You forgot to mention, that they manipulate the horses tales by cutting muscles! That’s why the horses cannot hold their tales regularly. Thank you for constantly making awareness of this terrible practice and horse abuse!!
I was just looking for this comment! Raleigh Link also has a video about this, too! I swear tho, this video plus hers you could make a good informational documentary about it….
My daughter grew up seeing dressage, eventing, hunters and western horses. One day when I had moved to Georgia, I saw the sign for a walker show. After she had seen them perform I asked what she thought. Her answer was"It's like a bad car accident, you're horrified but you can't look away.". My feelings exactly.
I never knew what big lick was. After seeing this I’m sickened!! That’s horrible!! That gait looks SO ridiculous. It’s not beautiful. It made me feel kind of sick. I used to own horses. That’s NOT the way they’re supposed to move. Thank you for bringing awareness to this sick practice.
Thanks for making this video. So disturbing. Seeing those back legs bend outward... everything about the movements the horses make just looks so uncomfortable and unnatural.
This video brings me to tears. My grandma loves horses, everything about them. The fact that they abuse these horses, they are beautiful creatures and I just can't believe people would do this. I despise these people who abuse these amazing horses. I hope this will fully become illegal and that the abusers can rot in jail. We need to write a bill to the government or something! Who's with me? ❤
Cruelty, plain and simple. Some "traditions" need to end and the Big Lick is one of them. Horses' bodies are not meant to move in such an exaggerated fashion...the stress on both the front and back legs...it boggles the mind. In one of the two open show classes I rode in, a Tennessee Walker was entered. He had chains around his front legs and I can remember hearing the clinking of them as he went by me. Can't recall if he had stacks on, but I'm sure he had been sored. As for the riders, looks like all they do is sit on the horse's back...no equitation skills at all.
I was highly disturbed seeing the recent footage that they would accompany the cruelty to horses with 'carousel' music. I thought there were laws that already prevented this type of abuse; but obviously these evil animal abusers have found a way around it? This has to stop!!
Tenerife Cats yes! They look so artificial- like carousel horses indeed. It’s like judges rewarding pugs with shorter & shorter snouts until they have impeded breathing & chronic headaches from compressed brains.
My great grandfather use to breed, raise and show Tennessee Walkers. I never got to see them because he was gone before I was born. My mother did see them, I showed her how they treat these horses, she was disgusted by this. She told me my great grandfather would be rolling his grave if he knew what they did to these horses. He never did this to his horses, he showed them with their natural gate. I settled me to know that my family never did this to these wonderful horses.
They used to cut the sinues under their tales so they would carry them higher but I think that is outlawed. I saw a video like this a few yrs ago, don't want to see it again. It unsettled me for weeks after.
Thanks for sharing this video with us all, I can not travel to places to watch this personally so you are doing a great service to the animals by sharing this abuse with the world to see.
i have a bare footed Tennessee walker and his natural gait is beautiful and so relaxed I can't belive that people would do this to such a kind and gentle horse.
If it were not so harmful to the horses, I would say it is just a clown show. I just don't understand how you could own such a beautiful horse and treat it so poorly.
THANK YOU FOR SHOWING THIS. Horses like any creature should be treated with kindness. The only animals I see are those LOSERS doing this to their horses. SHAME ON YOU
Having a horse is a huge privilege... one that many people don't have. These people take that privilege and turn it to dirt, right in front of the people that care. Being an equestrian isn't just about riding a horse, it's about loving a horse. If these people cannot understand that, then they're not equestrians. It's sickening to watch these big lick supporters take something beautiful... something that is important to so many people, and ruin it.
Until I watched your videos, I had no idea to what extent of pain and torture these beautiful creatures are subjected to. I’ve always felt so sorry for a horse that was subjected to a “large” rider, but this is nothing but total animal cruelty. I truly hope your efforts, to stop this horrific torture, are successful .

I totally agree with everything you said. I'm a muscle therapist for horses and had to do my college internship at a saddle seat facility and was horrified at how they treated the horses...needless to say i quit and went into muscle therapy to help these horses...the men riding those tortured horses are way too heavy for some of those horses..a riders foot is NOT to drop past the elbow or belly of the horse...if it does they are too big for the animal...I'm in Massachusetts and see this at shows up here too...just horrible! Bustles and chains and sticks of ginger up their fannies to make them hold their tails higher....the abuse is rampant....! I am a riding instructor and have nothing to do with this industry anymore just for this reason...i have a heavy draft that I ride not heavy pull( he was abused at pulling cinder blocks too) and a PMU mare that's thoroughbred/ percheron that I do endurance trail with.. EXCELLENT video to educate people as to what is going on! I'm sending this to everyone I know! I saw this crap up close many years ago at the Ohio State Fair. I hope they don't do those classes anymore. You should send this video to every congressman!
The sad part is that, with some training, you could get a beautiful gait that looks almost like what they're aiming for... without the pads, pain, chains, torture, or abuse the horses are suffering.
I didn't realize that the horses were tortured to make them walk that way. That is just terrible! It makes me want to cry. Horses to me are caring creatures. I had a horse that helped me through some pretty hard times. Thank you for making us aware of the pain these horses are in. I will never go watch them again! 😥😡😡😠. Unbelievable, the horses suffering like this. There needs to be laws put into place and enforced to protect these horses and all animals. Thank you for you for showing us, and trying to help the horses plus.
You get to pick up after them after the damage is done! Thank you for what you do. Those people need to pay you for cleaning up their mess. There is no love for horses there!
excellent overview. these horses need help and protection from this abuse. as a teen in the 60s I visited barns that "trained" gaited horses. it made me mad then and it needs to stop.
Curious. Were the gaited horses Big Lick Tennesse Walkers, or otherwise (American Saddlebreds, Tennessee Walkers who do the running walk, Rocky Mountain Horse, etc.)? I consider the Big Lick an abomination, but I thought most gaited horses, Tennessee Walkers included, have their gaits inborn. (Again, excluding the artificial Big Lick.)
This is CLEARLY serious abuse and should be a punishable offence. The question I ask is "Why isn't it!?" 😔 Those involved should be ashamed of themselves!
Thank you for this excellent video I have been aware of it most of my life and I’ve always hated these people. I remember seeing it as a kid and just thinking what the heck is this? I’m not a big fan of the super long shod saddlebred’s either but the Tennessee walkers are the worst. There’s so many ways to train horses that are not cruel, why do these people torture their horses just for such an artificial ridiculous looking gait? Nothing about it is beautiful the horses are in pain. Just look at the legs like you showed them completely hyper extending or putting so much pressure on their joints on the back end. This is the worst practice in the United States I’ve ever seen with horses and probably in the world in most cases. So gross thank you for the work that you guys are doing I’m trying to get this out there and more people to sign petitions and get this outlawed. Please share it on your Facebook post and wherever else you can
I can’t understand why they want that look it’s hideous. The natural gait is so much better it blows my mind that this is a thing. Those poor animals watching their back legs knocked me sick no wonder you find so many of them crippled at auction 🥺
Keep raising the awareness! These horses are so kind and fun to ride in their natural state. How did people become so jaded and cruel. Your video is so well done. It presents the facts without the hysteria of so many animal activists.
I'm from Missouri and never knew this was happening not too far away. I hope these shows end and the horses go to better places that won't do anything like this to them again.
This makes me mad. For these people inBig Lick should be charged for animal cruelty. These horses are hurting because of this. Something needs to be done NOW.
Watching this makes me feel physically nauseas. You can see the pain in their eyes with every step- the whites of their eyes showing and their eyes rolling around. You have to ask yourself what kind of human enjoys abusing horses as a hobby?
Shame, shame, shame. These people should be band from even owning a horse. This level of abuse is no different than beating or starving an animal. Same thing.
People, please pay heed to what Jason said about the judges. If there is no rewards or ribbons for this horrible abuse, then it will become obsolete. The exhibitors are competing for the win, so only judges can make it truly stop. Find out the names of the judges and share it on social media, send them public and private messages.....turn on the pressure!
@@deemalmstrom1515 I do agree with your statement; but how are we to find this out. I mean these events could show-up in any town or city in the mid-west or eastern states for that matter. I'd never heard of 'big lick' horses before watching your other videos. My god, that is horrific. I don't know how anyone who cares about horses can watch that and think that's okay.
I was member of the TWHBEA for some years and their magazine showed those big lickers, and in this time there was no internet yet. But when I got access to internet I was looking it up, because I knew people who had TWH and I wanted to have one too (a flatshot one really) then I started to see reality, and see them move instead of just a static picture. Then I instantly cancelled my membership as it felt so wrong to support this. I moved over to a sound horse foundation who fought hard to make the TWH known for the awesome horses they are. And luckily most of them are bred very well and most breeders are fiercely against big lick, but they suffer the image the breed has thanks to this horrific big lick business. It really shouldnt have a part in our world. People should know that in lesser content, this also happens with Saddlebreds and Morgan horses. Not as extreme as in this breed, but its not confined to just TWH horses. All horses of all breeds should be ridden with only their natural abilities. If you cant bring the best out of your horse on a show, you probably arent a match or dont understand it, but every horse can show impressive if in its natural power.

@@letemwalkon3621 yes I will agree with you on that point. Jason, you did an amazing job with this video. When you slow down the video, especially on that last horse that won, you can see the horror. Those horse's back legs are ridiculous. I have watched you guys rescue TWH at the auctions and one literally could not walk straight. This needs to stop now. I put this video on my Facebook page and begged everyone to share this. I also have posted on many singer and entertainer's pages for help. I protested last year at Woodbury and Shelbyville. I hope to do that again this year. Keep up the good work guys.
I am glad you posted this. I wish you would have shown more of the back legs when they were doing the big lick to show how awful it really ends up being. Plus cutting the tendon in the tails is cruel all by itself. Yes the don't all have them cut but still it is abuse. This should not be tolerated at all!
It is not just the Tennessee Walker show people - look into the whole Saddlebred industry! I used to do prep work at the barn of a local breeder/trainer/show-woman, where I went to the stall, groomed and fly-sprayed, then tacked up one of the lady’s six Saddlebreds, then passed them to her where she did the chains and booting herself before they went to the indoor arena. She spent about 15 minutes racking the horse (what they called that high-stepping gait) as I was in the stall prepping the next horse. She’d come out of the arena, dismount and I’d trade her horses with barely enough time to untack and brush down the tired and sweaty horse, gently remove the boots and chains (each horse was different, had their own ‘gear’), daub salve and hoof ointment where needed, turn it into an outdoor paddock and do it all over again until the lady had worked all six of her current show animals in less than 3 hours. It was GRUELING. This was three afternoons a week - the weekends were for shows, most out of town, even out of state. I love horses, but it killed me to see, to be involved with, the pain and discomfort of these tall, beautiful horses in this assembly-line fashion. So I quit. But I’ve never forgotten the ‘ugly’ reality behind the ‘magic’ of a saddlebred prancing in the show ring…😢🥺

The amount of times people caught their farriers beating their horses is ridiculous.

I don't know anything about horses, I just read about this on wikipedia and could not believe it. As a human who has had joint paints I can't imagine how horrible this makes the horses feel!! Thank you for bringing attention to these poor horses and the horrible practices of those keepers 😢
Right?? The hyperextension looks soo painful. I'm sick and achy right now and I can feel their pain 😭.
The owners should have to endure everything they put their horses through.
As well as the trainers who ride these horses for the owners, and they get paid to abuse these Horses

Why do humans treat animals in this way, you are right to say it’s heartbreaking
Will you share the info so we can all write to him and reinforce what you said!
Thank you for speaking up for these horses. Please keep the pressure on the people in power that can make change 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
This is torture for these horses pls stop this practise of cruelty. People in Britain will be shocked and sickened by this cruelty. They also will boycott the states that support this until it's banned and compromised.
I have been fighting against this abuse for over 50 years. So time for it to end.
Thank you!
The people who do that should be ashamed of themselves and need to go to jail for that. That is unnecessary to do that to horses.
They INSIST it is not painful or abusive!

Pester PITA

I Agree! This horror to these beautiful horses must Stop NOW! SHAME ON THESE CRUEL PEOPLE. WHY? Do this? HORRIBLE
Anything but normal 🤬
The slo-mo really lets us see how much pressure is out on the hind legs and how much they bow out unnaturally. It looks so awkward and painful.
I shared this video on my Facebook account. I hope Facebook does not take it down. I appreciate Horse Shelter Heroes staff!
Thank you for exposing the stupidity of this horrible abuse !! It does look ridiculous and these horses are suffering ! Great coverage !!
Right !!! My thoughts exactly they don’t give a shit
Until I watched your videos, I had no idea to what extent of pain and torture these beautiful creatures are subjected to. Bustles and chains and sticks of ginger up their fannies to make them hold their tails higher....the abuse is rampant....! excellent overview. these horses need help and protection from this abuse. as a teen in the 60s I visited barns that "trained" gaited horses. it made me mad then and it needs to stop.
Curious. Were the gaited horses Big Lick Tennesse Walkers, or otherwise (American Saddlebreds, Tennessee Walkers who do the running walk, Rocky Mountain Horse, etc.)?
I consider the Big Lick an abomination, but I thought most gaited horses, Tennessee Walkers
included, have their gaits inborn. (Again, excluding the artificial Big Lick.)
Thank you for making this. We need more people to see this.
This is CLEARLY serious abuse and should be a punishable offence. The question I ask is "Why isn't it!?" 😔 Those involved should be ashamed of themselves!

Thank you for your work! In Germany there's horse abuse too, but this is so cruel. Heartbreaking.

@@letemwalkon3621 thats total bull and you know full well that just because these horses manage to scrape thru inspections that some seriously dodgy stuff goes on behind the scenes. You can not get the horse to walk like that naturally. It needs stacks chains, tie downs, and sore pasterns.
@@letemwalkon3621 yes I will agree with you on that point. There will also be the odd case of abuse in other disciplines, but NEVER where they alter a horses way of going and have it endure soring and stacks chains. I'm glad that you showed all the difference "classes" I only thought the "big lick" was the only sort of show they do. Glad there is at least one non-abusive class. I've also never had someone talk about how the big lick makes the horse's back end so shitty due to weight change. This one video was more informative then all the other vids I've ever seen about the big lick (over 40). Thank you for sharing!
I never knew I love horses, and I do not want to see them abused
