    In this video, we discuss our recent survey when we asked, "Should campground (CG) access be determined based on the size of recreational vehicles (RVs)?"
    We give you the responses and discuss how the boat industry does it and would it work for RVs?

    How did I miss this survey? I guess our 27’ Winnebago travel trailer is somewhere in the middle of this debate.
    If I was a campground owner I would like to keep my job as simple as possible. Paying by the foot would just complicate the system. I would charge everyone the same taking into consideration the larger rigs use more resources. The small guy would get the shaft but being the owner I wouldn’t care.
    We belong to a members only campground. Everyone has 30 amp service. There is 50 amp available in a separate locked box. If you need 50 amps they unlock it for a small per day fee.

    • @LifeWithPaulLorena
      @LifeWithPaulLorena  Рік тому

      I guess we snuck it by you Warren! We fall a little on the large side, but use 30amp. You are correct, a few campgrounds are adding fees for 50amp service.

    Paul, I don't like it when some TT parks make me disconnect and park my enclosed trailer in a different place from my Class A, even when I would fit with the trailer. Don

    • @LifeWithPaulLorena
      @LifeWithPaulLorena  Рік тому +1

      Do they say why Don? If you can fit in the spot without tires on the grass, I wouldn't think it would be a problem. We've rarely had to disconnect our tow dolly, but it's obviously a little less noticeable.

    • @CowboyBikerAdventures
      @CowboyBikerAdventures Рік тому

      @LifeWithPaulLorena As it turns out, Paul. Each manager can set their own rules. And usually when they want you to disconnect, not always, they want to charge you per day for your trailer. Also, maybe it's because they don't want people stand there in cargo trailers as their RV, I'm not sure. Don

    Hummmm🤔
    Let’s see, as a work camper I have seen and heard all of the above 🤦🏽‍♀️
    Charges as far as I am in looped with, are set according to to park/parks “management”.
    Accommodating large rigs, medium and small should fall on office staff.
    Even if you place your reservation online “most” campgrounds ask the length of your rig. If you end up in a small space not suitable for that rig, take it up with “management”.
    Premium sites are usually the only sites that are more costly? However no matter how much or many GADGETS a bigger rig has, power is power people!
    Because a rig has three airs it will still use 50amps bc the system for air is rigged (or supposedly) for 50amps!
    Unless the rig is now set up with the 100amp system that is used in more LUXURIOUS rigs (I’m sorry to offend anyone but most of us don’t have those) then that rig will use much more juice and I’m certain they would not be staying at WILDERNESS park.
    Bottom line, quit putting ideas into businesses heads and make it more costly for the average person/family/families.
    Sometimes information being put out there opens eyes and ears and hurts your traveling community.
    Lose Lips Sink Ships
    By the way, love your travels 👍🏽

      You think I was smart enough to come up with this idea!? I appreciate the vote of confidence! 😂
      I'm just being the devil's advocate and stirring things up! I wish campgrounds were better at controlling where certain rigs are parked, but most aren't. Once they have your money they don't care how it goes after that. Not all, but more than should are that way. Certain campground owners need to be more cognizant of what rigs are parked where and not allow the customer dictate where and how they are parked. If you leave it up to the individual they will always do what's best for themselves. Safe travels!

    Paul, interesting subject. I have yet to visit Fort Wilderness, but it is on my bucket list. In your opinion, what site area is best for a 33 ft class pulling an enclosed trailer with total length of 49 ft? It would be nice if I knew more about it when I call for a reservation and they put me in a tiny spot!! Thanks for all of your videos...been watching since you were on the countdown to go full time and were downsizing.

      Class C....

    • @LifeWithPaulLorena
      @LifeWithPaulLorena  Рік тому

      You won't have much of a problem with the 33ft rig. I'm pretty sure the trailer will have to be parked up front in the oversize lot. There is an internal shuttle that gets you around and can take you out to the "Outpost Depot" if you need to get to the trailer. I actually don't know if they charge extra for storing the trailer out there.
      Yes, the campground is tight. Yes, it's harder for larger rigs to get into spots. Yes, it's still better than 95% of the campgrounds out there.

    First off, Wilderness campground is at fault for trying to fit a 10 lb sausage into a 5 lb. space. That's not the campers fault. That is lack, of communication and programming of the reservation department.
    In a campground, I choose to take a large space in a 17 ft, due to shade and offered amenities. I pay by the foot, that space is say, for me $50.
    I'm sure 95% of those big rig owners would not be thrilled, if they pulled in and they are told, they have a space less desired and smaller for $132.00. I'm enjoying my fenced in shaded cement patio, on a huge space and they sit in the baking sun with nothing but electric and water.
    As it stands now, I pay the same as a mega land yacht, if I choose a premium.
    That is like taking the wedding suite when your a party of one. Got the $$$'s have what you desire.
    Really don't think, the idea will fly in the camping world.

    • @tammymdotson4604
      @tammymdotson4604 Рік тому +1

      And I think you hit the nail on the head, what rig you are in doesn't matter, some sites are better than others and if you choose to pay for the premium site that is longer with the paved patio and shade and just better, then what rig you are in doesn't matter you pay for the quality of the site.
      The problem at Disney is that the "Premium Sites" are for the sites closer to the boat and the lake... and those are the tightest sections... so the more you pay the less room you get... It's confusing because you think you are paying for a bigger site set up for "big rigs" and you really are paying more to try to fit in the site.. they should do a better job explaining that in their descriptions and those doing reservations have absolutely no clue, but the one thing is they will go out of their way to let you change sites if you ask and if there is anything available.

    • @LifeWithPaulLorena
      @LifeWithPaulLorena  Рік тому

      Some campgrounds, like Fort Wilderness, only have a certain amount of space because it's how they are built and I think it would be a nightmare for them to track who is parked where. I also think it would result in unused spots if they were to have sites setup for only big rigs or only small rigs. I agree with you when you say, "if you CHOOSE to PAY for the premium space" that's what you get.
      Appreciate your comment Annie!

    • @LifeWithPaulLorena
      @LifeWithPaulLorena  Рік тому +1

      Yeah, my daughter ran into that with their 5th wheel. They got into the 100 or 200 loop expecting to be closer to Settlement and could barely fit! They have a unique situation having being built the way it was back in 1971.
      State parks usually have "site length" in the reservation system, but you still get into situations were tiny rigs take up large sites and then large rigs can't fit into tiny sites. Once that happens, they're toast.

    All Rvs should have access at the same price. However, I wish CGs would separate the sites themselves by size. I.e., no 20 ft rigs in sites made for big rigs. Make it a range, for example 24 ft or less, 25-35 ft, 35 ft plus. Simple.

    • @LifeWithPaulLorena
      @LifeWithPaulLorena  Рік тому

      Yeah, we experienced that in the state park in Hot Springs Arkansas. There were quite a few shorter sites available, but most of the long sites were taken up by shorter rigs that could have parked anywhere. Of course, most of the long, LEVEL, sites were along the river and everyone wanted to park there.

      that would have an effect on people traveling together though too. I grew up caravanning with my parent's friends we had a travel trailer, two had tent trailers, and some only tents, we all wanted and did camp in sites next to each other, moved picnic tables around cooked together ect. So those kinds of rules would make that impossible

    Really... You just want a war... LOL... so no not like a Marina, you are comparing apples to oranges as far as why marinas charge because of linear length on the marina, and while arguably the bigger unit may pay more in a marina it is because there is less room for other units and their cost is based on how many boats fit. But as far as for RV's being that we have a larger rig. I can tell you from experience that we do typically pay more, because most of the campgrounds we go to that have sites that our 45' Super C and now towing a 24' trailer we need premium sites for the extra room and we do pay more for that and I think that is a reasonable expectation. However as far as utilities I would argue that although we have 3 A/C's etc. etc. we probably don't use much more power or services than the 18' travel trailer with one A/C - simply because we are much much better insulated... and I say that because we have a friend with a single A/C on 30 Amp and have parked near them and we usually turn on 2 A/C's rarely 3.. and parking next to our friends there A/C never stops and their rig is still hot and ours cycle's on and off, I will say now with the W/D we probably do use more water when we use that, but other than that our utilities are probably comparable. I think driving a larger rig requires more RV space so yes the cost is a bit higher and I expect that and am OK with that. I think it is reasonable to expect if you have a large rig some places you aren't going to fit, and I am perfectly fine with that it's a choice and every part of RV ownership is compromise, you know our reason for the Super C and it is primarily FOR US we feel that our rig is safer going up and down mountains with better brakes and not being blown around when semi's pass. I absolutely don't think there is a right or wrong choice in a rig. I think it has to be what works for you. I think if I was building a park I would have some sites for large rigs (premium sites) and then other different size sites. But then their is the question if you go to a first come first serve site... if you have an 18' rig should you be banned from picking the 60' site and if you chose that should you not pay more... and then Disney.. since we have been there many times I can tell you that yes there are some brutally tight sites and we have had a couple of them, and they were no fun to park in but as you know Vic is pretty competent and really we have never had a problem with blocking the road for more than a few minutes and have never been sticking out in the road blocking others with the jeep, but we have been behind the 18' travel trailer that took 30 minutes to park, or the 18' travel trailer that was parked next to us and pulled out one morning and forgot to put in his awning ripping it off on the tree right by our Jeep. .... really I think that is more a question of driving ability and paying attention and common courtesy as how you park more than length of rig. So, what's next should dog's be permitted at RV Parks or banned???? lol -- Ok and on that one you can guess my opinion.
