My Boy is 5. A couple of weeks back he declared to me skating is his favourite thing ever. Tomorrow he leaves his training skates and we are heading to our local skate shop to pick up some of the Kaltik Juniors. He’s buzzing.

I'm 42 and skated in the heyday around 95-2000.
As of 3 weeks ago my son (age 11) and I are regulars at the new Blackpool outdoor skatepark.

@@TomMoyse originally I had been skateboarding since I was 8 or 9 and I kinda just started getting bored of it and the scene, blading caught my eye when an ex gf wanted me to start roller skating with her so she bought me a pair of aggressives. Tom, you are such a huge part of what makes blading on the up and up again. The youth will creep up faster than we'll all realize as long as the current demographic doesn't stop pushing and encouraging the sport in a truly mature and inclusive way, with or without the wrinkles and absent cartiledge ;)

@@TomMoyse Im in like 6 braces RN.
Skating 3 days a week for the last month. Im doing casual skateboarding to slowly build up my ankle strength and balance on my off days because the skates turn my legs into spaghetti.
But i wont stop, I got 3 pairs of skates and I am learning freestyle slalom, artistic and speed. Once I feel strong ima pick up a pair of aggressive inlines and wizards are on the shopping list.
I got a figure skating background, I wasnt into rollerblading at the peak. But ice time is expensive as all heck, I had to quit in 2008 due to being like 50k in debt from my house.
Once I saw PIC frames, artistic, freestyle slalom - I knew I had to get into rollerblading. I am in full training mode for the first time in nearly 15 years and im in so much pain and having a blast. Street skating dont cost be 9 bills a month and have me freeze my nuts off.

Thanks so much for this. I really just thought this was gonna be pure speculation as to the future situation of blading. But to dedicate such a huge part of it to pointing out younger bladers who are absolute powerhouses really makes me happy. As a Younger blader myself it can feel discouraging only ever seeing older skaters, additionally thanks for all their social media handles. I'm gonna follow all of them. Love this culture, to see kids like myself getting into it and learning it is so encouraging for me. Additionally, it feels so cool to be able to support great companies like Them who support younger riders all the skates I own and will buy are pro skates for young riders like Marius Gaile. I also think you're on to something about the teaching kids to rollerblade needs to be more important I've been trying to teach my sister and it's a proper ruck trying to break it down for her.

It’s good that you have peers around your age to look to and inspire you. Plus I’m sure if other kids see you it will inspire them. It’s positive to see brands supporting the youth as they are the future of rollerblading. Hopefully there is more resources soon on how to teach. 🙌🏻🙌🏻

I turn 42 this month, I'm definitely one of those out of shape back to blading guys since last July. My oldest kid is 9 and him getting interested in skating got me back into it. My 6yo skateboards too. Both of them do ninja warrior and parkour classes, which help. I'm so happy to see the resurgence, and you're right that it can't last with just us OGs. Bringing it to the kids and getting people trained is what we need to keep it alive and kicking. It has to be accessible to more than just the kids of us back to blading people too. Let's be honest about our skills, if we were that good we would have been pro when the money was there, so we need more pros turning teacher and coaching the rest of us. I'm hoping we can also keep the community positive and avoid the toxicity we had in the late 90s. Also, we need to be careful on that line between taking the piss and actual insults. That becomes negative really fast. Thanks for the list of skaters to watch, keep up the good work.

I feel like "back to bladers" can at least inspire kids at the local skatepark(though I'd argue with enough time at the park, research on tricks, and health regimen, anyone can get pretty good).
A new park opened up in my small town in Ireland last month and I've been repping the blades, I'm 25 so I guess just about in the 25-35 age group. Anyway I just hope I can pull off some cool tricks with enough style to get the local kids eying up some pairs of skates online. I was 12 when I used to skate and I can only imagine where I'd be now if I hadn't stopped. Oh well at least I seem to have retained my balance and some muscle memory for what to do when I fall!
A side note. 12 year olds on scooters are getting in the way a lot, so every kid off a scooter and into some skates is a win in my eyes. A lot harder to not pay attention to what others are doing in the park when you can't hop off and land on your feet after all ;P

I always enjoy having older people at the park and a wholesome range of ages interacting in a chill and equal way is rare. I hope this vibe isnt what skating devolves into.

I'm the only inline skater at my local skatepark. Admittedly I'm an older guy who left the sport because of reasons and recently returned, but as penance I've successfully converted 2 of the local scooter kids into bladers this week after letting them try my skates and they've blagged their parents into buying them their first skates. I'm hoping there's a knock-on effect and I see more of the local kids getting in on it.
I don't particularly regret stopping skating as I had gotten as much out of it as I could at the time ('96 - '04) but coming back to it after 18 years has been an interesting experience. I doubt I'll become as "defined" by skating as I once was. My whole approach to skating is so much more laid back and more about fun and expression than dropping hammers every session. Maybe that's an age thing?
There's a deep feeling of nostalgia attached to skating for me, but also a tangible sense of evolution and of looking forward. Something about skating feels pioneering and fresh despite how long it's been around and i'm sure I can sense momentum slowly building around it.
I hope a bright future is ahead for the sport.

I actually think less of a focus on hammer skating will serve agressive skating better. People seeing more variety will bring more people in as it offers them more avenues. People want a breathe of freshness and creativity in almost every sport, but imo those big risky hammers are some of the most adrenaline pumping and to some people, motivational content. I remember being like 12 years old and watching old profiles of pros (Briscow, Aragon, Nick, Montre, etc etc) and thinking to myself "man I want to go out there and jump huge gaps and ledges" because I was motivated by seeing them do it.
