Hey, Mr. and Mrs.! Red Sonja is a Marvel Comics creation that transplanted one of Robert E. Howard's historical fiction creations into the Hyborian Age of Conan. The actual Red Sonya of Rogatino character Howard crafted was a Polish-Ukrainian mercenary who fought the Ottoman Turks during the Siege of Vienna in 1529 in the story "The Shadow of the Vulture".
Red Sonja was not a character in the original Robert E. Howard Conan stories but was a character in his short historical story The Shadow of the Vulture which takes place when the Turks laid siege to Vienna. She was not associated with Conan until the Marvel Comics adaptation in the 70s.
In "The Shadow of the Vulture" the character was named Red Sonya. So the Marvel character was the "it's a different character" while still being basically the same character adapted.
