Size of my bedroom dictates where my gear goes 😂 Still get your point , would be nice having everything all communicating and ready to go, searching for a power adaptor in the middle of a jam is a bit of a buzzkill!
Of course you could design your studio so that you have to move more. I've been chunking on the pounds as I get older so more movement is not a bad thing.
I go through this process whenever major pieces of equipment come to my studio - and it's that time again. Having the least amount of patching, moving, and fiddling between projects allows for the joy of making music to flow and ultimately makes the process more fun. Thanks for your video!!!
Looking clean as usual... This topic is very at the front of my mind currently because I'm building studio desk number 2 for the new much more permanent studio space (owning, no longer renting). So making sure I plan this build to be the most efficient and nothing left out... Very important.
great video as always Colt! i'm doing exactly the same in my studio, though it's more of a in the box studio at the moment, with a LOT of inputs for recording gear and instruments as I work as a composer. Though I find this extremely useful and do this a lot I would like to hear you talk about the other side of productivity. For instance, i know im prone to a bad back and as a composer im forever sat at the keyboard, piano or desk. That's not good for mental health or physical aches. So i tend to not only include the "how to make my workflow streamline stuff", but i'll also include the, "how to make my workflow force me to move when i'm recording, editing etc. For me this looks like having 3 desks that all serve different purposes, my studio desk is a standing desk for editing and I actively put things away when i'm done with them if they have a place to live so that i have to force myself to get up. I think your approach to that stuff would really benefit a lot of people here as I can see some things you have designed into your setup that fill that purpose, but maybe some might not. this kind of stuff can be speed stuff too though, so we aren't working for as long... but ill stop rambling now! :P
Hey Colt! Big fan! I'm a huge proponent of optimizing physical workflow in studios. My question to you is, how do you, as a working pro with time = money, know when a process is good enough? I mean I could spend more time changing stuff around the studio than actually getting the work done.
Always love you videos, lots of valuable information! Now seeing the Trace Audio cables (which i think is a phenomenal idea) could you do a video about power management/connections on the studio? Thanks
AudioScape do such a good job of recreating units and the price for this is unbelievable!!! They will be filling up my rack specs very soon. Streamlining anything you do professionally or even as a hobby is always important. I do deliveries on a electric bike for extra money and that is constantly being streamlined. There’s so much equipment designed these days just for streamlining your workflow. Units are constantly adding new features to better your workflow. DAW updating to better your workflow… Even if everything physical was set, you’d constantly still have to be organising files and how they are saved to streamline workflow. As your Plugin library grows, a better way of folderering them so you don’t just get brain fog every time you click on the Plugin tab. The keyboard shortcuts or stream deck shortcuts constantly evolving. The way you share files constantly needs streamlining and even the way you communicate with clients. And all this should be part of the fun of being professional. I personally really love the FlockAudio patch bays for streamlining equipment. The fact you can supply 48v phantom power means you can connect absolutely everything and connect anything to anything in whatever order you want. I see the XT being a no brainier £10,000 investment even to a small studio. I kind of wish they did a bigger one than the XT 😂 The thing is ideas of creativity need to be jumped on becoming it’s so easy to lose the idea, especially when there’s so many of them. Going strait to something and using it is so important. Then this action is so important for time saving also which is money saving in the long run. A great investment for me was a dusk collector 😂… saves a lot of spring cleans
Colt, How do you hook up your mic pre-amps and the mic-preamps in your interface? If there are combo jacks on your interface how can you hook them up to a patch bay because they are combo jacks you can only use them as a mic pre-amp or a line input? What about phantom power going up into your patch bay? I really appreciate you helping me out with this. I looked everywhere for these answers on UA-cam and nothing really addresses this situation fully.... Happy New Year to you and your family.
Jeez Colt, that’s a lot of cables! Did you you consider switching to something like Dante or AVB? UAD maybe will come out with one soon. Focusrite got some great stuff, apogee, rme
As clean as your studio seems to always be, I'm a little shocked you haven't looked into Flock Audio digital patch bay. Love the way your studio is set up. I've been planning my mix space for when I get back to the states and have the room I want. All the way to actually building my own desk. When I was planning mine, with hardware, I was really looking into the Flock Audio. It's such a streamline making piece of gear. It's ability to save patching setups makes it a very fast in getting ready for whatever you are getting ready to do.
I think they are a very cool idea! Unfortunately, they fall under the software controlled hardware debate that I have spoken on several times. And they cost a fortune to just bypass the process of plugging in patch cables. Which takes me about 30 seconds worth of time per day. Thanks for watching!
@@ColtCapperrune Since I am on the road in Mexico right now, and working only in the box, I've decided to stay in the box except for just a few things, so I found a way around the cost. I've become very happy with the new plugins quality and can't seem to bring myself to go with a lot of out board gear now. Looking to spend more on a controller instead, wish sweetwater would carry the iCon products. I'm old school in wanting faders more than anything else at this point and getting off the keyboard and mouse.
Hey colt where did you get your monitor and what type of computer do you have?I was thinking about upgrading to a refurbished i9 Mac but i might want to look into just getting a new monitor and the computer like you got fam…Dope video as usual btw🥇
Great video. Work flow is often overlooked until a producer/ engineer has to refine their's to be more productive with less and less time available in their schedule.I hate arm rests on an audio desk chair. As a guitarist/bassist. I would ditch those so you can play more freely in the chair. But to each their own. It's all about the work flow. What matters to me might be useless to you.
That cable is basically the same thing that is happening inside of a furman: one inlet to multiple outputs. As long as you don’t exceed 15amps on the circuit breaker, and you don’t exceed 13amps per triple IEC, it’s as safe as any other cable you use in a studio.
moving equipment around again awakens my audio geek chakras
The AudioScape 260 is next on my list!
I've had people tell me my room is set up backwards...then they remember I'm a lefty. Great video.
I never leave any room for keyboard/mouse/tea - the most important things in the studio
yeah, this is often overlooked. good job pointing this out!

Thanks Colt!! Love your studio wish I had half the gear you got lol!! I will get there eventually though. a True Mentor for sure!!
You will if you stick with it! This is a result of 20 years of saving and spending. Thanks for watching!
I just got those Trace Audio power cables too. They are awesome. Having enough outlets is a constant struggle.
I think you’ve officially outgrown that room. Tell Sweetwater to build you a live room for tracking that you can “borrow” 😅
Thanks Colt gelreat video and its nice to know I'm not crazy for re-evaluating my set up
Great advice!
Thanks homie!

brilliant
Always great information ideas, and advice. Don't it make ya want to go make a record !?

Colt what’s that battery backup? APC??
Do they make a left handed keyboard stand?

I'm sorry Colt, but my STDIO workflow doesn't need an update...
People misspell stuff on purpose trolling for comments these days. It’s a common algorithm hack. Drives me crazy.

I give it 4 months before the TT patchbay video
Or needs updating? Wait no i forgot how the algorithm works for a sec my b
Don’t yell at me!
Sorry bro!!! Haha
Itb. Just need a new b.
Your video title needs updatING. Cool video though!
That has got to be a fire hazard…I wouldnt trust that kind of cable
Just go to the link at Trace audio and do your own research. These cables are very safe

@@traceaudio5797 interesting. If I ever get a lot of outboard gear that would be cool.
I'm poor, I don't have this problem.
