THIS is Elk Hunting! FLINTLOCK Catch and Cook

  • I love bow hunting elk. But as hard as I try, I can't always notch my elk tag during the September archery season. Luckily I've got the option to get back in the mountains in November for a late season muzzleloader cow hunt. I like bugling bulls as much as the next guy but THIS is elk hunting! The country is big and the elk, plenty. The problem is getting within flintlock range of these big herds without being spotted. Let's see if we can put together a little elk hunting catch and cook! In this video I'm hunting with my old 50cal Kentucky rifle. I built this one sometime in my early 20s. We're hot tent camping in my buddies wall tent with a wood stove. That thing sure makes cold weather winter camping much more enjoyable.
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bow hunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!

Lots of folks have been asking about the rifle and load I was shooting so here ya go! This is a custom kit rifle I put together 20 years ago. Unfortunately I don't recall where it came from or who the manufacturer is. As for loads, I was shooting 90 grains of FFFg behind a 275 grain Maxi-Hunter conical bullet. I've killed several elk with patched round balls but this rifle shoots much tighter groups (3" at 100 yards) with the conical bullets. I've got it sighted to 3" high at 50 yards and it's about 3" low at 100.

Hello Clay! Hope this finds you well. I had a quick question, I am building a osage bow, going off your book, the Bowyers handbook, great info! Anyway the stave i have does not have a sapwood layer, it's just rock hard right at the start, is this normal? If so do I need to still take it down to a single ring,?? as it looks like the it had a good first ring right under the bark. Sorry hope that's not confusing 😄

Nice rifle & load. My huntin' rifle likes the Lyman plains bullets a little better over 80gr 3f & a felt wad. I'm old enough now I "cheat" with a Williams peep sight for anything over 30 yards but in my TN woods that's about as far as I can shoot thru the heavy brush. Nice to see someone else who knows 3f won't "blow up" a 50 or 54 cal rifle(I like my 54). And anyone who can shoot that well with a flintlock can shoot pretty much anything well.
I've seen other videos where you talk about the value of wool & wanted to ask if you have any experience with Weatherwool? They're expensive but if their claim are true I may decide I need to try them.

Angela, comments like yours help me realize how fortunate I've been to grow up hunting and have been for 45+ years. There's nothing like it. It's not easy, which makes everything that much more rewarding, kill or no kill. I wouldn't have it any other way. On a side note, besides restaurants, I haven't bought beef in 29 years, since my daughter was born, which I love! 😉
As mentioned, don't be overwhelmed, but start with the basics of hunter safety and go from there.

Yeah starting is the most important step, and Hunters ED is the best place to start, learn how to hunt safely and then start with something small that you can hunt close to home, if you need a place to hunt look for public hunting land near you and start with that. I would suggest just getting out in the woods and try to hunt something small and work you way up from there

Being a hunter myself it requires days and days of tracking the game.

Absolutely amazing video when you crept over the ridge and the elk were right there, I actually ducked down in my chair.Lol For years that is how I muzzle loader hunted deer in Western Iowa hill country albeit a different scale. Wait for the coldest windiest snowiest day, find a ridge, glass ,walk, creep up and look over the ridge and repeat. That's when you know you're living your best life.

That was awesome..great job.. people just can't realize what an accomplishment that was..I got a Pa black bear with my long rifle a few weeks ago..all the time I spent building it from scratch produced a genuine proud moment when I walked up to that downed bruin...only went 50yrds with a round ball..never tried a connicle..gonna try it..thx brother

Good video, great stock and nice shot, you had them cold turkey. brought back lots of memories of my good friend and I who after many years of center fire hunting , we switched to muzzle loader hunting, we both had TC stocks with Green mountain barrels, in flint and percussion 54 cal flint and 58 cal percussion in Round ball twist. After a couple hundred pounds of lead we cast balls out of and shooting every chance we could , we were very confident anything inside of 125 yards was in our wheel house. My best harvest was a large cow elk on the trot at 75ish yards, the big 58 round ball hit behind the shoulder and stuck in the hide oposit side, she collapsed on her chin in three strides and it was over. we were lucky enough to harvest deer as well as a couple with the flint locks, it is a humbling way to hunt with Black powder muzzle loaders, I had more fails than success but the big win was the experiance.

Then you loaded it back up pushed it again but this time YOU had a great ride down with your prize. Oh hell yeah the feeling you had I'm sure was so satisfying when you got back to the truck with the elk. Great job
