Charles was faster; Jamelle had the vision, the instincts, and he was slippery as hell. If Holieway doesn't tear up his knee, OU wins at least one more national championship. He was the best QB to ever run the wishbone for my money.
The Labyrinthine Jar.... I have to agree with you.. . I also believe if Jamelle doesn't tear up his knee Oklahoma wins another national championship he was already a master at running the bone.... but before he got hurt and when he came back his passing went to another level, he was dropping Dimes. His touch on the ball was beautiful
Enjoyed watching that. I remember Switzer telling a story about Jamelle where Charles asked the coach, how does he know to pitch it. Switzer's reply was "That's why he starts."
Royal3ok also sent Troy Aikman to UCLA. That is how impressively he ran the wishbone . No way Troy was getting his job back after his injury . National champ! Basically a HOF QB was the odd man out. Classy of Barry Switzer to help Troy land in LA a pass happy offense . Ironically to coach him in Dallas .....Funny! Lived in Norman during the days of the King . Back when The Boz and Keith Jackson were tearing it up.
@@timallen609 yes it was real classy of Barry Switzer to hook Troy Aikman up with UCLA a lot of people did not know that..... they just figured Troy left on his own without any help from Switzer
@@johnmanning4097 yeah it was . He knew Troy deserved to play but hard to bench a QB just led you to a national championship in Jamelle Holieway . Not sure why Aikmen went to OU in the first place although the Sooners did have All American Keith Jackson not really a pass happy attack . That triple option was a thing of beauty with the lightning quick Holieway you really couldn't cheat and defend the lateral because he would tuck it and cut inside .
Love the video! He was my guy growing up as a Sooner. For all of the great runs on this video, he was also tremendous on when to pitch. He was also a vastly underrated passer. Great video!
I grew up during the glory days of the OU wishbone, watching Jck Mildren and Steve Davis and JC Watts, etc. Nobody ever ran the wishbone better than Holieway. All the more amazing that he ran the wishbone to perfection and a national title as a true freshman. I mean just making the jump to college is hard enough, let alone running the OU wishbone.
belaghoulashi I can’t fault you but I am partial to JC Watts. With a good tight end to throw too and Sims to pitch too, he was a true balanced option QB.
I'm a USC fan. And remember him running the option so beautifully. He was the greatest option qb IMHO. I'm convinced, when the option has the right players, it's perhaps one the best offensive schemes. Especially when teams get tired.
Jamelle was not a typical wishbone quarterback. He was like Barry Sanders under center before he blew out his knee. He didn’t utilize the pitch man very often as he was usually the best option even when he was defended.
i freakin love jamelle...when he was at the helm ..he was in total command of the baddest wishbone option i have ever seen! thanks jamelle.! you are awesome!!
This Husker fan always had a lot of respect for Jamelle. Question -- aren't these highlights past his True Fr season? I thought I saw both the home and away jerseys on at least Mizzou.
AS I STATED IN OTHER POSTS,SOONERS BEAT MOST EVERY TEAM IN THE MID AND LATE 1980s EXCEPT THE THUGGISH MIAMI CANES!...THEY JUST COULDN'T PASS WELL ENOUGH TO GO WITH THEIR GREAT RUNNING GAME...THE CANES WOULD JUST CLOG THE LINE AND WITH THE SPEED THEY HAD ON DEFENSE,ESPECIALLY ON THE CORNERS,THEY WOULD ALMOST COMPLETELY SHUT SOONERS RUN GAME DOWN!...IF TROY AIKMAN HAD NOT BROKE LEG AND THEN TRANSFERRED,THEY COULD HAVE BEATEN THEM THUGGISH CANES IN 85,86 AND 88!
He’s from Carson California and played for Banning High School. This dude was a beast in pop warner football, high school, and college. One of the best players ever out of Del Amo.

I am a Texas alum but Holieway was maybe the best option quarterback ever. Btw does anyone know who he replaced? Troy Aikman who broke his leg then transferred to UCLA and the rest is history.
Yes Charles was faster. But Holieway just had the instincts. Believe me it hurts me to say this as life long UT fan. He gave me nightmares before our annual game in Dallas. Unfortunately many of his highlights tend to have UT symbols on the back of their jerseys as they were chasing him.
So funny he sent Troy Aikman packing to UCLA........lol . National champ and all. The writing was on the wall for Troy. Not sure why he chose OU anyway from Henrietta. Wishbone offense wasn't for him. Worked out well for Troy so good for all involved! Great players
Troy broke his leg... ironically so, they both lost their positions due to injury.. the only reason Hollieway got back in is because Charles Thompson broke his leg. Id say, Aikman, although a risky move, he made out the best. This OU team was innovative, their speed options killed all defenses. No one had an answer for it for about 3 years.
