I have some perspective on this, having lived the first 24 years of my life in Seattle and then, after living in Chicago and other places, lived in Cambridge for 20 years, before moving back to Seattle a year ago.
The question of which place has worse weather is a very difficult one, as summers have gotten worse in both places while winters in Boston have gotten less bad. I hated dealing with snow in Cambridge because of the difficulty of parking my car in the street; but if you live in greater Boston without a car or have an indoor parking place, then this will not weigh in the balance---though trudging past houses whose owners don't clear the sidewalk in front of them remains a trial. As for the extremity of winter temperatures, I figured out long ago that clothing that would keep me warm in Boston when it was 25 degrees out would leave me shivering in Seattle when it was 40 degrees out: the cold here is that much more damp and penetrating, and some houses have poor thermal insulation (a point on which New Englanders do not mess around).
For beauty of the natural environment, Boston cannot compete with Seattle, but it is no slouch. Speaking as someone who lived for 13 years in Chicago, a city built on a desolate flatland where the sickly pea-green of Lake Michigan passes as scenic, I rate greater Boston very highly for natural beauty. The sight of the city strung along the Charles River as viewed from the T going over the Longfellow Bridge never failed to lift my spirits. As for the attractions of the built environment, I think the two cities are evenly matched.
Noune's video touches only lightly on a point that can make a great difference in some lives: the fact that Boston is within a few hours' journey of New York City, while the only major cities near Seattle, namely Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, B.C., are no greater in size or cultural weight than Seattle itself. There is also a considerable difference in intellectual tone between the two places. Greater Boston is the site of dozens of colleges and universities, Harvard and M.I.T. being only the most famous of the lot, while Seattle can boast only of the University of Washington and a few institutions of purely regional reputation. One way to gauge this difference in tone is to examine the contents of the Little Free Libraries that are scattered around residential neighborhoods. In Cambridge, I used to find many interesting books in them; in Seattle (Queen Anne), I find only children's books, once-bestselling novels, and other trivial products.

Seattle & Boston are very similar cities, probably the most similar cities in the US. I mean both of these cities have a Beacon Hill 😅. (Although Seattle is also very similar to Vancouver BC, Portland & SF). I think it all boils down to preference. For me I like nature, close access to hiking and moderate seasons. The Grey and rain doesn't bother me either since I'm tired of the sun after 3 months lol. Although recently in Seattle it feels like the sun is nonstop from May to October bleh. I know the video mentioned Boston is closer to Europe...which is cool. But Seattle is closer to Canada and Asia. Plus we have ferries to take us to islands all throughout Washington & BC. Plus our flights to Cali and Vegas are shorter and cheaper if we really want a change of climate and sun. I will say the people of Seattle are more passive aggressive and chill vs the "Masshole" stereotypes of Bostonians but generally both cities are nice as whole once you get past the surface level. Beware of the "Seattle Freeze" and the "the Boston East Coast urgency vibe". Also check back in 5 years for public transit and our region will definitely start to compete with Boston. Typically in this battle of Starbucks land vs Dunkin Donuts City I would say visit both in the heart of Winter and make your decision there. Both are great but it's Seattle for me. PNW 💚 💙🌲🏔

    Great video! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
PS The only thing, I think that Seattle has only lake beaches meaning of places where people can swim. Part of summer months is also pretty cool and rainy.
Only somewhere in the middle of July and till, maybe it’s hot real summer. But at some point, the fires start...
I would say that only during winter month Boston area is colder than the Seattle area.

I've resided in Boston (Cambridge, to be precise) for 7 years and started thinking about moving to Seattle, as someone working in tech. Mainly because the housing market in Boston is getting crazy. Search for a 1 bed on zillow and you will see that most options are segmented apartments carved out of old homes from the 1800s. Whereas it seems $2k will get you what is considered a "luxury" apartment in Downtown Seattle.
The coffee and culture scene in Seattle also sounds appealing. In Boston it's rare to find cafes open after 3-6pm, leaving people who enjoy some quiet no place to hang out other than our crusty apartments, unless we frequent the bars.
    Curious to hear your thoughts!

    • @BostonAreaHomes
      @BostonAreaHomes  Рік тому +1

Well, it all depends on your priorities or tastes. I have clients who moved from Seattle to Boston and are very happy about the move. Main complaints about Seattle - constant grey and rainy weather, and all the other things I included in my video Seattle vs Boston. If those things are not that important to you, and Boston winters and prices are your main concerns, you probably will be happier in Seattle. The other thing that people forget about is friends and family. It takes a while to create a new friend group and for some people it is important to stay close to family. Are those important to you?

@@BostonAreaHomes Thank you for your response!
I have yet to live in a place with constant grey and rainy weather - but I don't think it's a deal-breaker for me. Boston prices and housing supply was indeed my main concern.
While I had stayed around Boston mainly because friends were here, I considered leaving as a lot of them are leaving too. And Seattle seemed like a good place for Asian food and tech jobs, on top of which rent seems slightly more worth, in terms of value-for-money.
I did see on some sites that Seattle groceries, dining, and other costs of living might be higher than Boston's, despite lower rent. As well as different sites can't seem to agree whether Seattle jobs pays better than Boston, or vice versa! Which you also mentioned in your video regarding COL.

One thing I don't think was mentioned that is a pro for Seattle - is that it has no state income tax, and Boston/Massachusetts taxes you on a lot of stuff! So your take-home pay would be more in Seattle than in Boston. However, Massachusetts also has MassHealth which is very useful in the event you lose a job/income at least the state steps in to help cover all or most of the cost of health insurance, and it offers the longest unemployment period in the country I believe, you get 30 weeks I think. So Massachusetts is great in terms of a safety net for when things hit the fan, which is something especially in a country like the US.

I have been both to Boston and Seattle. I love Boston for how the odd number streets ascend and the even numbers descend, but with too many one way streets. Seattle is fine when going to the other cities within King County, Washington and the buses are on time and go beyond Seattle.

I've lived in Singapore (Home country), Orange County California (Current), Stuttgart Germany (Studies), and Santiago Chile (Work). To be frank, I'm miserable in California. The car culture is so toxic the best thing to ever happen is work from home due to the pandemic. I grew up with Singapore's public transit and studied for years in Germany which has superior public transportation compared to California. Santiago de Chile is so walkable I managed to work there for 2 years without a car using only metro & buses. I also have many friends in Central Europe & Chile so a reduced time zone difference would help if I move to Boston which is why your video caught my eyes. I'm not anti-car per say, I just want the freedom to rest on my way home (driving while tired is dangerous) and not waste 3 hours driving 15km. I'll give both cities a visit before making my move choice now that things are reopening. Thank you for the video :)

Thanks for sharing, @Chicken soup. If you live in Boston proper you can get by without a car, you can strike conversations with strangers, yes! Boston public transport is so much better than most of the West coast. It’s nothing compared to Europe but if you take the T or bus and get used to it, it’s pretty good. People in Boston are conservative, in general, when it comes to friendships

It’s so interesting, I’ve been living in Seattle for about 2 years, but recently started thinking of Boston as my next home. Although I’ve never been to Boston, I visited many cities in Europe, and I also lived 3 years in London, so Boston seems like the closest “Europe” I can get in America.

Watch my other videos about the weather, different neighborhoods and if you want to talk to Alina, who is featured in this video, I can see if that can be arranged. I lived in Boston for almost nine years, then I decided to move to LA for some climate change, etc, man I have never made the dumbest decision in my Lifetime, My wife and I don't like it at all, we are considering moving back to Boston, meanwhile, we don't want to deal the harsh winter, Boston is phenomenal City, I call it the city of opportunities, culture, the best health care system, civilized State absolutely with no doubt, meanwhile we visited Seattle back in October, we loved it so much, and now we are seriously thinking of moving there, I see many job opportunities around, I have a Banking experience for over seven years, my profession is Videography and photography, besides my wife's aunt she's been living there for decades, do you think it would be a wise decision for us moving to Seattle? We are so confused, and it's getting so hard for us to come with a final decision, we need expert advice, plus I have made lots of connections in Boston, however we are scared of dealing with the harsh winter, plus moving is going to be much harder financially, what do you think? We just wanna get out of LA as soon as we can, my elderly parents live with us too, your advice is much appreciated , thank you for making this video, cheers!

Hi @Gary, thanks for sharing. I have several clients who moved from Seattle to Boston and all of them say that they (obviously) like Boston more. The reasons they bring up are 1. More sunlight and less rain makes it less depressing to live in Boston 2. The weather is actually warmer in Boston from April to November (the 3-4 months in the winter Boston is colder, but they like that it is still sunny in the winter a lot) 3. Boston has a much better location for taking weekend trips or day trips to visit other big cities or go to mountains or beaches 4. It's easier and cheaper to fly to Europe (if you have family in Europe makes a huge difference). If none of the above points are important to you, and the winter cold of the 3-4 months is the priority, you should choose Seattle, since it will be less of a shift for you than going to the opposite coast. Hope that helps!

And are there any unemployment benefits? Also can you make video of new York VS Chicago. Me and my husband are confused whether to move to Boston. Seattle. Chicago. New York and los Angeles. We want to find a good and safe place to raise our kids. We want either of these five cities that I mentioned. Can you make a comparison with all of these cities when it comes to living standards. Boston is almost the same size as Seattle.I lived in Boston for over 15 years.Boston has twice the number of police officers than Seattle has.I have lived in Seattle on,and off for over 5 years. The buglary rate, and drug abuse in Seattle is ridiculous!.Who over heard of a city where meth, and herion are legal to have in your possession. As much as i love living in Seattle this city needs to start throwing drug abusers, and thiefs in jail instead of slapping them on the hand, and letting them get away with it.If a cop sees you doing drugs in the open in Boston they will pin your ass to the wall, and throw you in handcuffs without a second thought about it.Seattle needs to fire the city goverment, and replace it with a bunch of New England style law makers! Costs more in Seattle for sure. Everything. We passed Boston years ago on that unfortunately. Massive amounts of work here in every field. Seattle is hands down better all around for outdoors or nature. Both are very liberal now unfortunately. Seattle has more crime and homeless. Downtown in parts will discust you. Seattle freeze is real so good luck making friends. If you do please let us how you did it lol😂😂. You make and pay more in Seattle. 3rd worste roads in nation and traffic is murder. We don't explain miles its in time. Seattle you can buy mansions to shacks but shacks still over 1 million easy. Too many neighborhoods to count in Seattle area. Good luck. We get snow too.
