He says it. One time. Which is about as many times as he says 'Uncle!' It's like they knew he had to say those two things, so they made him say each once to get it out of the way.
@@theredandblueyakuzahe mostly doesn't. And he especially doesn't in THAT WAY. You know, with THAT inflection? Not even once. The one time he does say it, he pauses right before, as if saying 'are you ready, people? Here it comes!' You can hear the ellipses. It's really cheesy lol
It was a complaint about the show forever is Zuko talking about his honor, kinda like how Katara talked about her mother every. Time. Talking about it and dealing with the trauma after some time with progression makes up for the flaws of the original
oh my gosh he never says it?!?!? Episode one was so bad, mostly all in the dialouge department, that I'm not motivated to watch any more... :( That sucks!!
I didn't like how Aang just went for a late night flight on Appa. In the original he was actually running away when he got caught in the storm. And later he struggles with the guilt, which helps in his character development
Specifically running away from the reality of being the avatar.. One of my favorite episodes is when katana and sokka get sick and aang has to wrestle with the guilt. In doing so, accidentally helping zuko out... Could have been cool to see his guilt expanded upon, but instead he just "went out for a fly" like come on!
This is exactly how I felt with multiple scenes in the show, like when Aang is able to fully pull himself out of the Avatar state when he discovers the destruction of the air temple. All he has to do is think back to his mentor and he can suppress his rage. In the original show, his rage consumes him and physically pushes Katara back. Katara talks to him about her own experiences with loss and talks him down enough for Aang to be approachable once more, where she takes his hand and fully takes him out of the Avatar state, showing that Aang has no full control over his true power and needs the help of friends to guide and ground him (plus the determination of Katara to get back up and try again to help him etc.). But nah, Aang is a genius monk able to do it all himself... what a joke or a script lol
THIS!!! Especially because everyone seems to be trying to guilt trip him in the Netflix show for being trapped in ice, which would make more sense if it happen like in the original show with him running away.
@@Conquereddid we watch the same show or not? Aang was about to throw sokka and katara off the cliff. It was katara yelling out to him in pain, that he realized he needed to be there for his friends and stopped. He didn't want to hurt them
@@mewtwomotherfuka You must be watching the wrong show. It was Aang remembering Gyatso's words that allowed him to snap oit of the Avatar state in the Netflix show. You do know that we're talking about the Netflix show, right?
That might be the thing that bugged me the most in the first episode. It felt like they stripped all the character out of Gran Gran and just had her be exposition. Yeah, she was wise and clever in the original, but she wasn’t omniscient. I could not think of anything that would justify her knowing that Aang is the Avatar.
I guess it could only be explained by supposing that it is common knowledge that the next avatar had to be an Airbender and that another one was never born. So by that you could assume, that the last Airbender avatar must still be alive somewhere. So when she saw an Airbender, she thought "huh, guess he must be the avatar, since he is the only Airbender we've seen in forever". But yeah, it is still ridiculously mentalist of her. Who would put all that together in like 10 Minutes
@@Ayla7650Possibly, but the thing is that the Airbenders were very isolated and it had been 100 years, nobody knows they look like let alone identify them. And when an Avatar is reborn, no one really knows about it except at most word of mouth, which you're not gonna get alot from the southern water tribe because it doesn't get a lot of traffic. Granted even if she noticed he was an airbender, that doesn't mean he would have been the Avatar because he would have been too young. Most people assumed he would have been like ancient, which Zuko actually did.
Okay but Alex.... You HAVE to watch the OG animated show. It's phenomenal. You don't need to do an episode on it, but you should watch it for yourself.
Yup, that actually made me drop my jaw, that he never actually watched it! I took a long time to sit down and watch it in order, too, but still. Then again he watches so much for the channel, and if he knows he's never gonna make a video about it...
I can't help but notice they didn't make any of the characters black or gay.. apparently it's only okay to do that when the characters were originally white? 🤔
One thing I love from the original's pilot episodes was how Sokka and Katara explained waterbending. Katara starts to say, "It's not magic, it's waterbending..." like she's about to go into an expository spiel about it, but then Sokka cuts her off and mocks her for it. But in mocking her, he ends up explaining waterbending himself. Then, just a couple of minutes later, Katara gets frustrated with Sokka, and we get this neat shot where we can see the water all around Katara follow her movements. At the height of her anger, she accidentally destroys a large iceberg with her waterbending, which presumably caused/allowed the iceberg that Aang was trapped in to surface. First, they made fun of shows that like to just throw exposition in your face, then they told us what waterbending is, then they SHOWED us what waterbending is, all the while establishing the personalities and relationship of these two characters, before seamlessly introducing Aang. It's fabulous.
Exactly! The original was ALL about the little things and that’s what made it literally amazing. This one glosses over so many details and intricacies, it’s sad..
I miss the sexism in the show. Adding: I'd also mention that this aspect of Sokka and considering his environment he grew up in, all played a role in his character development. Taking away this early flaw is the equivalent of taking a piece of Sokka's identity and his character growth. He's now less narrow minded and thus, is flatter as a character. The show was amazing for the struggle and learning throughout the series. If we take away the struggle aspect and only learn, then how can we appreciate it without earning/experiencing it?
@@lmnop29 it sure does. Either way I dislike changes that abbreviate wrongfully from the original source. For instance in the show Aang had his tongue "frozen" while he was playing with the water tribe kids and it wouldn't had harmed to include a scene like that exactly like in the original material. It doesn't has to be a 1:1 replica motion to motion, at the very least it could've added these details. Actually, I'm not even inclined to call "details" because it was a literal scene. To Netflix:"get'cho shit together."
In the original, they already knew he was the avatar, and they told him when he was 12 despite his mentor wanting him to have a childhood first. Thats literally what made everything else in the story possible
Not to mention the grandmother just... _knowing_ he was the avatar? In the show they didn't figure it out until things got desperate and the power kicked in. The grandmother just showing up and saying, "You are Avatar!!" just feels so much more like random exposition. (I'm betting they didn't want to spend the money on the CG so they found a way to not have to have that happen.)
@@VraerynDaDragonespecially considering it’s been a century. It would just be folklore at that point, he could be any airbender. Netflix made it a generic superhero show lol
I think this also plays to his point about animation. Technically, the clothes in the animated shows were clean looking, but it’s a cartoon so your mind fills in the blanks. It’s the same thing with everyone wearing the same color when they are from the same place. In a cartoon, sure! In live action, what is this, communism? Or having a character wear the same clothes every day.
Especially since they look at least for the ice nation cheap and flimsy they don't look like something that would keep someone warm, get some hide not perfectly dyed blue.
I do like the Asian traditional clothes worn by some of the background characters. They event though just costume feel match the upbringing. The main character costumes I agree with how they look like costumes instead of clothes
One of the things I immediately did not like was Katara's quietness and complasaintness with Sokka. She would even lower her head a bunch of times when he spoke to her throughout the first episode. I was like WHO IS THIS WOMAN?
Her character keeps being portrayed as this fimble character. But she really is an outspoken, young girl who doesn't let anyone talk down on her or anything. She always stood her ground, idk why they keep making her this weak female character smh!
Fr I actually said “why is sokka acting like he’s the oldest” then I remembered he is actually the oldest. In the animated version, you’d easily forget katara was the youngest. It’s not hard to miss in this series.
Sibling rivalry was portrayed well. They bikered with each other and katara even said “youre not dad”. Its just that whenever sokka spoke they intentionally made it sound bad with the framing and silence. When katara spoke it was sokka who was complaisant and was made to be the fool. Damn even in episode 8 they made katara the rey skywalker of the show. Not sure what you’re talking about.
@@thesis-and-nieces6722funny bc in the OG Katara would never seriously undermine Sokka in that way, but we did have an ep with Katara being humbled in that way about mothering the team. They've inversed the roles.
The problem with this show is they fix problems that weren’t actually problems, like Sokka’s sexism, which they eliminate, but there’s a whole arc about him being humbled and learning he isn’t that guy
And its clear in the show that Sokka's sexism was a part of an established culture of the water tribe when they went to the North pole and saw that women were not allowed to learn fighting. It appeared because most of the men left and the women remained in the south that the women took more dominate roles, but I still think they shared similar culltures in that regard making Sokka more of a cultural problem than anything.
They're practically skipping character development. You're forced to be accepting and 'respecting' from the very beginning regardless of the natural circumstances in the location and time period of the show, never earning it. Just following a doctorial path that was set to you. Such ideal paths are artificial when it isn't based on learning and growing but simply following it. Reminds me almost of that anime when there was a program to literally destroy consciousness in the population in order for a ideal world. Void of complaints. A lifeless utopian world. The anime movie I'm referring to; *Harmony* Disclaimer: very disturbing. Viewer's discretion.
I love how simplistically people look at this stuff. Like small tribal cultures have the luxury of letting their women die in combat. Sorry folks but when you have a small population each woman is ten or twenty times more important for the survival of said tribe.
Right. I found it quite jarring during the interaction and fighting scene with Suki, it was forced and unnecessary, like, "why is she even trying to prove anything to him, he NEVER said anything offensive or remotely sexist?", it was just mostly awkward. They could've left that out like they did so many other parts (that could've been put in).
@@jonathan-us5jmI’ll say, I think he does a great job… for what he’s given. You can tell the writing, with them not trying to repeat lines 1 for 1, is a little messy. But he’s doing great with it imo.
I mean he wasn't robbed of it. He just didn't crack the jokes nearly as much as he used to. I will say overall the series definitely could be improved very much such as give them back their key traits but it wasn't done as bad as I expected
the live action looks better than i expected, but the writing is SO disappointing. it’s not just the plot points they’ve changed, the whole essence of the show feels gone. the brilliant wisdom of the original seems lost, it’s like the people who made this version never really understood the point of the original at all.
Exactly, it seems as if they barely looked at what made the show great. Basically, thought they could make a better adaptation Imo. I don’t think it’s awful but it’s not great that’s for sure.
will you just stop ranting on garbage live action adaptation on beloved animation!? this is still garbage than one piece! please netflix let it flopped!
Better than expected only bcuz we had that 2010 movie first otherwise from a CGI perspective it looks terrible. The way Appa and Momo look and the other animals is demonizing and not realistic in the slightest
In their so brilliant wisdom business executive way, they actually said that it needed to be more game of thrones like for the audience. And it feels like it lol. That alone ruins it for me but the tone and overall vibe is bad beyond that idea even.
Thing that pisses me off so much about the show is that it does not trust the audience. The original avatar did a great job of showing character motivations. The show just tells you.
@@bluecyclone7077I think one reason why that’s the case is because the large majority of media that’s been made for the past few years are all tell not show. Hollywood has been dumbing down their movies for a while now and as a result we see viewers who are unable to think for themselves and put 2 and 2 together based on subtle cues and micro expressions
That clip of Sokka and Katara from the animated series was so refreshing. It reminded me of how good the dialogue is in the original and made me realize how truly awful it is in the Netflix adaptation. Even though the voice acting is exaggerated because it's a cartoon, it still sounds way more like real conversation between actual siblings.
As someone who really enjoyed the new adaptation, I 100% agree with you. Aang and Katara are both far cries from their original selves. Aang is far too serious, and Katara has none of her blind optimism, or even her attitude towards the boys. They’re both very hollow versions of the characters we knew imo. Zuko and Iroh’s actors understood the assignment imo, they got the characters “right” to begin with (like got their basic energy and vibes down pact) and also managed to add more at the same time.
Tell me about it. You know you're better off just taking this opportunity to rewatch the original show again. That's what I did. Instead of watching the live action when it released I just started watching the animated one again with a newfound appreciation of just how gosh dang good it is the whole way through. I'm not even that disappointed that the live action couldn't live up to the original, because we still have the original, and it's just as great as it always has been. I really don't think it's possible to capture the personality and magic of the cartoon in live action, even with the best script and actors imaginable. You just can't reach the same levels of expression in live action without it feeling uncanny. I will never understand why Hollywood keeps trying and failing this same schtick. None of the recent live action remakes have got anywhere close to the quality of the originals.

Someone who is capable, manipulative, and incredibly intelligent. That's because... She is. In the remake, however, we meet a spoiled brat who fails at even just buttering up her father, and reacts so emotionally she needs to be kept in check by those around her. Wherever they take her character, that's the first thing they show us. That's what they promised her character is. You can't take that back.
When she’s talking to Ozai was horrible. In the animated series she’s so powerful and crazy that when you see her bowing down to her father “THE FIRE LORD” every time they interact you can, without even see him move a finger, what kind of tread he represents. Now he looks so approachable and Azula is so meh. They put them so down to earth that they don’t even impact anymore.
Azula never was capable of "buttering" up her father. I guess you didnt read the comics. In book 4 Azula is mentally broken and Ozai speaks about how he always played the 2 siblings against each other. It is canon that Azula was always outplayed by Ozai. The cartoon just didnt show many moments of it. I am glad that the netflix show shows her insecurity. Although i personally dont like the way the actor looks.
In the original she was actually cold and calculated and incredibly skilled. She mostly just seems emotional now, and not really scary. We’ll see what they do with it I guess

I asked chat gbt to give me a summary of the first season of Avatar and this is what it said. The first season of "Avatar: The Last Airbender," also known as Book One: Water, follows the journey of 12-year-old Aang, the last surviving Airbender and the long-lost Avatar, whose destiny is to bring peace to the world by ending the Fire Nation's war against the other nations. Aang is discovered frozen in an iceberg by Katara and Sokka, siblings from the Southern Water Tribe. As they travel, Aang learns that he must master the elements of Water, Earth, Fire, and Air to defeat the Fire Nation. The season chronicles Aang's quest to master Waterbending, starting with their journey to the Northern Water Tribe. Along the way, they encounter various challenges, including run-ins with the Fire Nation, led by Prince Zuko, who is determined to capture Aang to regain his honor. The trio also encounters other characters, such as the rogue Earthbender Toph and the mysterious Blue Spirit. As they progress, Aang and his friends face complex moral dilemmas and experience personal growth. The season culminates in the Siege of the North, where Aang and his friends defend the Northern Water Tribe against a major Fire Nation attack. Aang taps into the Avatar State, merging with the ocean spirit to repel the invaders. The season ends with the Fire Nation retreating, but with hints of greater challenges to come, including the rise of a more menacing antagonist, Azula.
Lmao this. I told someone that it seemed like someone binged watch the whole show then tried remembering what happened to make it live action lol but saying chat gtp made is even better 😂😂.
In the animated show when aang was told he was the new avatar he was alienated by the other kids and was told he would have to leave his home in order to train. That being "special" wasnt cracking up to what it sounded like. Like imagine telling a child he has to move away from all his friends.
@UncleTom854-bm5lv Agreed. They should have just made a whole new story. But considering the current state of the entertainment industry, that probably would have been worse than Legend of Korra; and I liked Korra despite its downsides.
Let's not forget him suddenly water bending when the avatar state kicked in was _the_ signal to everyone about what he was when he didn't tell them. Because no one else can do that.
Didn’t watch the live action yet, but if Aang never or didn’t tried to waterbend yet, Netflix miss the point unless they are doing it over multiple seasons. In the animated, Aang at least tried to waterbend with Katara’s teaching and even tried to firebend in 1 episode.
My guess is that season 2 will begin with them staying in the north for a whole year learning water bending, which will explain the kid growing up and why they removed learning water bending from season 1
I'd prefer it if people pointed out their problem with the show precisely, not just saying the adaptation is bad because that's the popular thing to say
11:25 You're pretty spot on about the inconsistency with Aang's flying. In the shows and books Air Nomads lost their ability to fly after they befriended the sky bison. This is because flight is tied to a spiritual practice involving severing emotional ties that keep people's souls bound to the physical world.
Most Air Nomads are able to imitate flight though by bending air currents around their gliders but actually being able to fly is something you only see a character from the LoK series be able to do.
It makes sense for them to use gliders for more sharper and direct flying, and use air bending for more free and graceful gliding and hovering. I don’t think he was really flying, as he appeared to be bending the air around and below him to glide and catch himself, but with Zaheer we doesn’t appear to bend the air at all, he just starts flying
@@louisecram2616 I don't think he ever actually did in the series. Then he still got into a relationship with Katara after everything was over and had Teshin and Boomie.
@cram2616 Nah, to master the avatar state, you need to learn to let go. Because you can't save everyone. Avatar can never sever their ties to the world because they need to care about the world ( thus earthly attachment ) to save it.
Man, they did Gyatso dirty in that first episode. When they see his body in the original series his skeleton is sat against a wall, looking almost meditative, while the ground around him is absolutely covered with the corpses of dead firebenders which he presumably killed before succumbing to his own injuries. In the live action he knocks a few grunts to the floor, then dies screaming at the hands of a single firebender. They did the same thing with Iroh, too (and presumably Bumi, but I missed that episode). The dude fired off a few missed shots to scare away Zhao at the Spirit Oasis in the live action, whereas in the original he managed to body 4 soldiers and forced Zhao to flee in the space of a few seconds. The old masters got no respect in the live action.

In the first episode, there's this very weird out-of-place question Aang asks Gyatso. After he's told he's the Avatar, he asks "Can't I just keep pretending to be your friend?", which is exactly what every friendship in this show feels like, pretend. The friendship- and character development of the original show are *chef's kiss**😙👌

Also I feel we all knew how special Gyatso and Aangs relationship was through the small flashbacks in the animation. This show waters it down with so much in your face stuff. Aang was supposed to feel immense guilt for shouting at him and leaving. But in the live action they reunite in spirit world which feels unearned. It was touching but it happened in like ep 5 instead of near the end of show.
The "best" part for me is that in the cartoon, everytime that a flashback of the air temple happens, aang is gooffing around, but in Netflix series he litteraly says that he likes to goofy around and we never see that. Its exactly the opposite of show not tell, its so "good" man

The first book is a little slow, but by the time you get to the end of the series you REALLY appreciate where it comes from. Animation still holds up over a decade later. Sorry to say that…I was trying to make a point here ,not to attack the show or anyone. I guess I said it in a wrong way but thats are the words I can think of for now
My least favorite thing is how they rushed anng finding out the airbenders died. In the show, he only found out after spending time with sokka and katara. But in this show he pretty much knew that the 2nd he woke up
10:22 THANK YOU!!! i dont know why the costume designer never have the idea to design some worn out clothes, they all like brand new, its just a cosplay fest and everytime someone got attacked by waterbending, they didnt get wet....like, u just need to spray some water dude, no tricks...gawd
They seem to have a hard time with that always, like when they used to go the other extreme, when they adapted those Superhero comics back in the day and made everything super gritty and such. While here they try to stay faithful to the source material, so everything just looks like plastic, basically like in the cartoon, which gets away with it, because it's a cartoon. Like you think there has to be a way, to reinterpret the clothing of the cartoon in a way that they on one hand are still recognizable as such, but on the other hand still look realistic. Like it also kind of defeats the purpose of a live action adaptation, what little there is, when you try and make it look as close to the cartoon as possible, might as well stick with the cartoon at that point.
The costume was the only thing I compared a lot to the movie, because like Katara's necklace and the blue spirit mask, they look so cheap, bright, and plastic-y it's really just like a cosplay prop. The costume itself really be looking clean and crisp all the time
You said it perfectly, I mean they arel also always attacked by fireballs, how is there no sign of burnt fabric or even ash on them. Also the time where I was crying laughing was when they introduced chubby Azula, chubby Tai Lee and especially chubby Mai in their Cosplay outfits which looked so damn uncomfortable and in no way remotely flexible enough to fight in 💀😂
@@annwbeth Honestly, after watching other live-action remakes, vibrancy and plasticity don't really bother me cause it feels like it reflects the comicky nature of the original animated show. I also had similar feelings about the special effects cause sure they're not hyperrealistic but all things considered, it seems like more of an intentional art style, and kind of reminds of c- and k-dramas set in a false historical time period. Especially looking back on other pieces of media originally geared towards a younger audience which have come out in recent times, I'm happy it hasn't been dulled down, cause it made the show more visually interesting imo. To be fair I was never expecting realistic costumes out of this, and am just happy that as a whole the pacing isn' t totally shot and while the overall tone is more serious it doesn't seem like it takes itself overly serious or is going full-on grim dark.
So, the air nomads were going to help the Earth Nation against the Fire Nation, while also celebrating the comet's passing, while also knowing it gave firebenders the power of a thousand suns??? Make it make sense...
Weren't the Air Nomads pacifists? I haven't seen the remake, but I'm a fan of the original. The reason they were killed was because they refused to fight.
They can’t have him say that , not in today’s political climate, that will *puts glasses on* “reinforce dated and harmful Asian stereotypes regarding the over importance of the concept of honor in their culture ”
*My biggest issues are only two:* how they portrayed Bumi, and they completely benched Avatar Roku. Avatar Roku is a critical character to the overall lore. It's one thing to have Kyoshi be the narrator of the intro, which I did like. Her voice is amazing, but to take Roku's big possession scene and give it to Kyoshi, AS WELL as give her the dialogue of what the Avatar is...I can't get behind that. Avatar Roku had personal stake in this whole venture, Kyoshi did not. It makes sense for Roku to essentially raise and train Aang as an Avatar so Aang could be better than he was. The two have an incredibly close connection in the OG. To remove that here? I can't forgive that. Then there's his whole personality shift in the remake. I don't know why CS Lee decided to go overboard on the humor. Yes Roku does have a sense of humor, but it's kind of like Dumbledore's, subdued. In the animated version, when Roku says "What took you so long?" that tells you everything you need to know about the past life, because of how it was delivered. He's kind, warm, inviting, has a playful side but would probably only show that to those he's close with. He's stern, but not overly harsh. He comforts vs berates Aang when Aang is at a low point. He doesn't yell even when he and Aang disagree. He's wise and that came from him traveling all over the world. He understood people, listened and heard them. To bench Avatar Roku now, is going to create huge writing problems for them later down the line if they do get a season 2 or 3. There's no relationship between him and Aang, and that is a HUGE misfire. Then there's what they did to Bumi, turning him into a bitter man who berates Aang for something outside of his control, just like Avatar Kyoshi, which is something she wouldn't do. People too often think she's like the Punisher of ATLA...When in reality she's more like Wonder Woman in terms of personality. What they did with Bumi and Avatar Roku _infuriates me._ And yet I can't get THAT mad at the WHOLE show cause there ARE really good elements. Such as seeing Avatar Kuruk for example, more sides to Azula and Iroh, seeing more of the Air Nomads was wonderful, and the actual Genocide itself was not just epic, but tragic. June was fantastic. The action is wonderful, the CGI incredible, the costuming is incredibly on point, it's nice to see COLOR again in fantasy. It sits at a C for me. Average.
It also makes sense for Roku to appear because he was the avatar directly before Aang so why would he be skipped as asking the avatar directly before you for help makes more sense and be used as your guide
Avatar Rokku helped Aang realize that the fire nation is not evil, their rulers are. With their relation sacrificed to the gods of equality and inclusion, the show loses a lot.
I felt like I was watching kids on a playground reenacting their favorite show during recess 😆 The costumes are super nice, the special effects and all that are well done, love the CGI like how great the Sky Temple and Appa look and all that, but.. the acting.. 😬 I'm sad about it. Was really looking forward to this but it's too cringy to watch.
I think the series feeling rushed is the main problem here. It was 8 whole episodes almost 1 hour each and yet, i felt like i didn't "see" any of the characters enough. Zuko and Iroh maybe yes but the main 3 characters just got lost on me. I just couldn't understand their essence. There was so much happenning in such a short time so I couldn't connect to the characters or feel their emotions. Or even the destruction of the war that had been going on for a 100 years... Like, come on. Avatar was one of my favorite cartoons growing up and it has too much depth and creativity to be captured in 8 episodes.
this is my main gripe with it as well, constricting a story into 8 neat episodes often stunts the progression and ruins important arcs. now that we're out of the pandemic and the SAG-AFTRA strike has been resolved, scripts will likely be better quality and things won't feel as rushed (especially because atla specifically got confirmed for 2 more seasons, so they no longer have any excuse to chop up storylines)
yeah the most development was in Iroh and Zuko's relationship. Everything else felt watered down and rushed, especially the relationship of the main three and Katara and Sokka's character development
You don't need to cover the animated show but oh my god you need to actually watch it. I got my dad to watch it with me as it was airing. He was so invested. Then when I got married and it came on Netflix, I got my husband the watch it and he loved it too. And he's not generally a fan of children's media. Its just...so good.
I second this. Even if there is no video made about it, it's still well-worth a watch on its own. It's a masterpiece. There's a reason they keep trying to recapture the lightning in a bottle with a live action series.
My issue was the dialogue. Every time someone spoke they had to explain everything you would learn throughout the show in one sentence. Also they said the intro at least three times in the first episode like people wouldn’t understand it. Or how Zuko explained painfully why he needed to capture Aang instead of having the arc of going from just “honor” to fixing the whole fire nation as a leader. Idk to me they had a great thing on a silver platter and changed random things that didn’t work.
Yes! They kept repeating things over and over, like we are dumb. I don't need every character announcing their motivations to me, let me figure that out myself. The animated show treated its audience more like adults than the live action.
Live action adaptations is Hollywood copying someone else's homework. They just either change the words a little or gut the whole thing and just keep the title and character names. The original of any work will always be the definitive version.
What do you think an adaptation is? It's like y'all don't know what you want. An exact copy of the original? Then you'll still be mad it's the same as the original. They do something different like what the creators wanted and you will still be mad because it isn't like the original. At this point y'all are just hating for hating sake. Y'all are stuck in 2005.
@@lulu_Lm Yeah nah, thats not the problem here. I like last airbender comic books, the novels, I even like the Legend of Korra. Novel authors and comic artists have passion for their craft and respect for the source material. Like the guy in the video said, Live action creators have an undeserved superiority complex.
Part of the problem I think is that there are less episodes and longer episodes. They merged multiple episodes together and also completely removed story lines. episodes usually follow natural progression with a climax of the story somewhere in the middle and then the resolution at the end. they didn’t do that well for the combined episodes, they didn’t actually combine them properly into 1 story they were just two or three separate stories in the same episode. Which makes the longer episodes useless in several cases.
One thing I really liked was the take on Zuko and his men. Not only did Zuko stick up for new recruits, but he saved their lives, and now works with them.
yes, I think Zuko's Agni Kai and the backstory to the 41st division and how they work with him was my favorite part about the LA. And probably a change that I prefer over the OG, especially when they bow to him when he's back in the boat. I mean I liked the part where OG's Zuko saved the crewman during the storm, gave up on chasing Aang, and earned the respects of his crew member. But I thought they used the flashback really well here to save time and still managed to capture the emotion and effectively adding layer to Zuko's character.
@@L4tteholic true Zhao was much more menacing and powerful with connections to Azula, and the argument between Zhou and Zuko AFTER the better Agni Kai between them, HEATED
@@L4tteholic My single nitpick about the flashbacks is that flashback Zuko would've been 11 and 13 years old between Lu Ten's funeral and him getting exiled (assuming the LA uses the same chronology as the cartoon) but they used the same actor, so it looked like Zuko didn't age a day in 5 years lol
@@L4tteholichonestly i disliked this change bc i feel like making zuko fight ozai kinda removes the original meaning of why he was banished - for refusing to fight and refusing to play his fathers games
@@phoebesekine4783 Isn't that still the case here? He was banished because, first, he hesitated to deliver the final blow, and then, he stood up to Ozai when discussing about sacrificing the weak, effectively refusing to play his game.
Not even a "new" show can save their asses from shitty writing, we've seen it happen already (the trash known as "korra"), and they didn't even have the "writer's strike" as an excuse back then🙄
The visual are great. They should have never tried to do the last air bender story. There are so many other avatars they could have and should have shown us. Anytime you do a remake you are gonna be held to the standard of the original material.
Yea, I think this is very interesting. A story about one of the avatars Aang met on the turtle island perhaps. I also have similar thoughts on Korra (and although unrelated: Boruto). Instead of showing what comes right after, why not the past, would prolly be more interesting. In Korra's case, the series could never live up to how legendary ATLA was. Same goes for Boruto.
Yeah, there's the sequel comics, the Kyoshi books etc. They had so much they could have chosen to adapt. But the motivation was evidently never the passion of creating a good story, but to make more money off an already finished classic.
@@sindrevangenrobberstad2889 if you are going to make a remake you need to atleast stay faithful to the characters and it felt like they took away the character flaws because they were afraid of idk what. But it makes the characters dull and not worth rooting for.
Okay I know remakes and live actions are annoying af, but would it really be bad if we got a modern day Ben 10 live action? With our current cgi for the ten aliens 😬
The thing I hated most about the 2010 movie is that the firebenders couldn’t create fire out of nowhere. They needed to have a fire source nearby, making it the most situational bs ever. Some dude invents electric lighting and you’re done for.
But they did the same thing with Katara in this series. There was always a pond or fountain near her. She only got her satchel bottle bag in episode 8! Tell me why the pond water she used was never dirty and full of grime? Annoying.
I weirdly enough actually like the idea the fire benders needed to carry their element with them. The only one who could self generate it that was seen was Iroh. It suggests their bending was corrupted and weakened as a result, but Iroh learned it correctly. That’s actually interesting. Only compliment the movie gets.
@@JoshWise1010 I see what you mean but the fire benders being able to generate there own element at will was the reason they were so feared and powerful ,that's also another reason while they went after the air nomads first
@@JoshWise1010if fire benders needed to have their own fire or were unable to bend without fire being near them… that totally nullifies the whole point of why they were feared. Basically surround them in a place without fire and they’re dead meat
Gearing the remake towards an older audience really dumbed down the character’s original personalities into serious, mature, and frankly boring shells of their former selves. It was also announced before the show’s remake that the creators were making Aang more “serious” , which takes away 90% of this character that we know and love from the original show. His goofiness and curious personality is what made the original episodes so heartwarming and funny, and the team’s shenanigans so comical and cartoony. Maybe making everyone more light-hearted would’ve brought back the 2D animation “magic”.
i also don't think it makes much sense to make aang more serious, since the boy who plays him seems to perform better in comedic moments. i think making the show more fun and lighthearted could have helped the child actors feel more comfortable.
THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING THE FRESH OUT OF THE CLEANERS CLOTHES. I mean for 2D okay clothes are clean BUT if they were going for "Realism" the water tribe clothes would be covered in fish guts and lots of sweat
I've never noticed what you said about the pristine costumes but it makes so much sense. It makes you feel like you're in a theme park not in a fantasy world
Soaking a fabric in tea since it makes it look dirtier and dyed it to make it duller and using sandpaper to distress it then rubbing it in dirt does the trick. Cosplayer, not a professional but even I know how to do this 😂
Agree! The white on Sokka and Kataras coat should be brown with dirt as soon as they left water tribe. Actually it would be dirty anyway as clothes would be a nightmare to dry in such cold climates. Zuko's armour looked a bit more 'worn' but the trio's clothes not getting singed or burnt once is crazy. Obvs the cartoon things stayed squeaky clean, but you'd expect wear and tear in the show. And I wish Sokka had a no. 0 cut on the side of his head 😂
To be fair we can still just watch the animated TV show. It's on DVD and Netflix in full season right now. I personally am not against having live action things, but I do agree that there are some things that don't need to be live action. This show probably being one of them. However there's really nothing stopping me from appreciating the animated show over the live action TV series
I was so hopeful. I was like "yeah they definitely wouldn't have made the character's as intersting as sand paper. They wouldn't get rid of Sokka's misogyny, and the characters would surely have meaningful interactions. Surely that's not too hard to ask for"
@@javierlopez9789 If I had a nickel for every time some company felt the need to remake a classic piece of children’s media into a more “mature” live action show that’s better than the horrible movie adaptation but still not that great and full of exposition dumps, I would have two nickels.
The detail about the clothes looking too new and clean is on point. I couldn't put my finger on what looked off about them, and it was absolutely that.
Oh yeah. Totally. As opposed to the cartoon where the cloths look worn out. Oh wait. The costumes are extremely well done. And it’s a fantasy show. If you’ve seen any length of fantasy shows, especially ones from the East then this would be nothing new. They want you to see and appreciate the designs of the outfits. This isn’t a show about being musky and grimy. It’s an eastern inspired fantasy show.
When he was captured in the first episode he use his avatar water powers, and then sokka and katara find out. The whole point was he knew. They eliminated the chracter growth
Where is the Agni Kai??? Why is the cave of lovers already being shown? I’m confused about some elements and people from book 2 showing up in book one. It sort of feels like they are trying to put as much as possible in the show because of the possibility of being cancelled.
@@saydie6646no it hasn’t he still hates him idk what show y’all watched. And his dad is being the manipulator that he is, if you think that makes him a better dad idk what to tell you because that’s still abuse
I'd even say that showing Aang leaving before we had time to know and connect with him as a character makes him look like kind of an asshole. (especially since in that version it doesn't look like he was shunned by the other kids for being the Avatar)
Tbf tho, it's likely because most people watching this series already watched the show as kids and already KNOW about the Airbender genocide, so that's why they did it sooner. There's not really much shock when the show is pretty well-known by now. I mean, maybe from Aang's perspective but not really the audience's.
Right?! The fact that (presumably) Gran-Gran tells Aang that the Southern Air Temple was hit first doesn't give it as much impact when he actually goes there and sees the devastation. It hits harder in the animated show because everyone tells him no one has seen airbenders in a century and Aang waves them off saying just because no one has seen them, doesn't mean they're not there. Katara actively tries to hide evidence of the Fire Nation having been to the Air Temple while they're there, so when Aang finds Monk Gyatso's skeleton surrounded by dead Fire Nation soldiers, it makes sense why he loses control and goes into the Avatar state. I understand how stupid it would be to do a one-to-one remake of the animated show with live actors, but their biggest mistake is sacrificing good storytelling/writing for some lame "coolness" factor. The audience isn't stupid; you can show things, imply things, without having to dump exposition in our faces every five minutes.
@@13CrystalHeart Yeah but the OG series trusted its audience and didn't spoon-feed them, that's good writing. And even if they wanted to lead with the genocide, I feel like it should have been restructured in a way where the whole episode focuses on Aang's life before he was crystalized or whatever happened to him in the iceberg. I just feel like there's a better way to do it than how they went about it
I made a drinking game for whenever someone says some variant of the phrase "We're not in Wolf Cave anymore." It wasn't dozens of times, but it was enough to make me yell at the screen saying "No fucking shit you're in the spirit world dumbass." or "Do you not know where you are right now?"
That's why they were supposed to explore and learn that on their own that ruins the rest of the season because now I'm gonna be only interested in the action parts
Yeah it took away form Aang being sent into the avatar state upon seeing the dead air benders. It also removes one of my favorite aspects of Katara which is her maternal nature. She calmed downs aang in the air temple like someone would their spouse or child. In the la i didn’t feel it at all.
Animated Gran Gran: nobody's seen an airbender in 100 years. Live action Gran Gran: _In the beginning, there was nothing. And then Raava said, "let there be light"..._
The creators being involved does not guarantee a successful show, the Percy Jackson tv show had the author Rick Riordan heavily involved and the final product in my opinion was mediocre. I've heard that the Avatar show runners left because they wanted to treat the show as a do over. An adaptation works best when it's treated as a refinement process, not a do over.
This is what I was upset about watching this.... they removed ALL the character arcs.... everything they grew to understand in the animated version was just handed to them in the first episode.... They took away the humor and emotion that made you like dang they really are just children.... when katara got that scroll in the first episode I was like damn there goes her rebellion against being a goody tooshu which was a set up for a lot of the things she ends up doing later on including wanting Aang to kill the firelord. If your going to change stuff fine but stripping it of its soul is unacceptable....
U can't fix what isn't broken. Primary rule. Every adaptation thinks they can make a classic even better by their own ideologies and agendas. We know what is the result of that, besides One Piece. Katara character is again victim of woke brigade, similarly Aang and Sokka too
They cut Sokka's character arch out because he was slightly sexist at the start of the show, which he overcomes rather early on and grows to respect everyone he works with and becomes a strong leader type by the end. It's the most basic fundamental of his character and they just cut it because they thought it would be "problematic." The more they spoke about how they kept changing stuff, the more I knew this show would be a bust.
The thing about aang learning he's the avatar is that the council do it out of desperation because of the fire nation being aggressive and the world needs the avatar but gyatso says he's still too young to take the responsibility. The council against gyatso's wishes decide to address it to literally everyone and expose aang which leaves him outcast from his friends. And the reason why he leaves is that they plan on replacing gyatso as his master before sending him off basically taking away everything he loved just because he's the avatar which leads him to resent the title which is why thought the first book, he needs to come to terms with it and accept it because it brings hope to the world weather he wants to or not.
I wish you’d touched more on Zuko and Iroh, I feel like their characters were treated with less cheese than the others. Overall I was impressed by the dedication to recreating the action from the original series. The fight choreography was incredibly faithful and surprisingly brutal
There characters are butchered in my opinion. They pushed them to far along in there story arks way to quickly. I remembering breaking down in tears every time I watch tales form Ba Sing Se. In the live action Iroh and Zukos bond is just let out of the bag to early. I didn’t even make me want to care.
@zerk3676 I do agree with this. I also think Iroh is a character that would be very hard to get right. Too often, it felt like Iroh was starting to impart some wisdom but then just stopped before the actual lesson. I also felt like he came across more introverted, chilly (compared), and less emotionally intuned. Like, I feel like the original Iroh would have comforted and been heartbroken with the earth kingdom soldier, not so cold, like he was in the LA.
@@hotarubinariko Agreed, the scene mad me so mad. I expected Iroh to show sympathy and remorse but just acted like “your not the only one with pain buddy”
@binariko to me in that scene Iroh seemed liked he cared but he hid his emotions from the soldier. At the end of the scene you can see him change his expression when the soldiers leave him again and you can watch his expressions during the dialog. His face and eyes tell a different story than his mouth. Great acting imo
@@karesz23 I do agree with that, but that changes his dynamic within the story. Iroh is already supposed to be on the otherside of Zuko's journey and why he's so good and helping him through it, but this implies he's still on his journey for me. Like he's realizing how much suffering as been caused by his actions, but in the show, he already knows that. He enters every interaction with everyone with kindness and eqaulity in the original. It's part of what makes him so inspiring. I do think if that is what they were going for, the acting is good. It just gutted his character a bit. All that said, I did enjoy the first season and even though it is kind of missing the point of the original, I do want to see netflix follow through on this. They felt like they were getting it in the last few episodes, so I want to see what they can do with more time.
It felt like it was made for the Tik Tokers. It jumped from point to point so fast that the relationships between the characters felt barely there. Aang going from "I've mastered that already" to "I don't want to be special" in the first five minutes was something...
Aang didn’t even learn a single water bending move this season. It makes me wonder what will happen next season, will he just learn both water bending and earth bending at once or will they just act like he’s already a master at water bending now? Kind of a similar thing with katara learning water healing, she went to one lesson and did literally one thing for not even a minute so are they gonna act like she can now heal next season?
@@felixowen2693Pakku declared her a master without even once showing her proper fighting skills or even seeing what she needed to work on so I would not be surprised if she's already a master healer. I personally like it, its just some things like that, that don't make sense to me. From a tactical perspective it would make sense for Aang to learn what ever moves Katara knows because he honestly just needs to display 1 basic move and he'll then be able to pick it up rapidly. The character development is also rushed. Idk I like it but it's iffy at the same time.
@@felixowen2693I will say Netflix did it's thing when it came to bending. @@RK-cj4oc okay? That literally doesn’t disprove anything I said. if the creators themselves wrote that and then chose to not add it as a part of the show it clearly wasn’t very pivotal in anyones character arc. @@botdetector9494 I never said it was pivotal. And Azula is still fighting for her fathers approval. We now just see how he is flaming hatred against Zuko in Azula by talking down to her " because of his actions" Which makes alot of sense.
If there are 2 characters that I do feel genuinely benefitted from this show, it'd be Zuko and Iroh. There's a lot more gray to their stories. People often forget that the cartoons barely ever showed the darker side of Iroh. Lovable or not, he was still a general in the Fire Nation with innocent blood on his hands. And the Netflix show actually explored that aspect even further. I adored the flashback to Lu Ten's funeral and how Zuko showed kindness to his uncle. It was a powerful moment and shows why Iroh really wanted to accompany Zuko. The added note that Zuko's crew on the ship was the very group of soldiers he stood up for in the war meeting is another phenomenal moment.
I disagree 1,000 percent. Iroh and Zuko in this show are forced through their arks to fast. It takes all of the weight of their relationship and just dumps it on your head and says “this is sad right?”. In the animated series you you saw them develop and show parts of their past that you had to piece together. You new Iroh had a dark past, and when the episode Tales from Ba Sing Se arrives it unravels all of it in a relatable and gut wrenching moment. You see the facade of the witty, happy, wise old man turn into one of true regret, sadness, and remorse for his actions. This works so well because that episode is also tied to him showing love to the people he tried to conquer.
Iroh's "sins" certainly weren't lost on the viewers I watched some hyper-left twitch streamer's reaction to the show and ever time Iroh came up, he'd just call him a war criminal and a predator (for hugging jin)
@@USBYDProductions It wasn't lost on the viewers. But the show never actually tried to call him out on it either. Iroh never faced further consequences beyond the death of his son.
@@zerk813 Establishing character beats early on and bringing up flashbacks that already happened doesn't mean their arcs were rushed. Even if the cartoon did the same thing, it wouldn't have taken away the value of their growth or characters. That's a narrative difference. Not a character difference. Iroh had always been a heavy character whether he showed it outwards or not.

Hiiiiiiiiiiiii Alex
I HAVEN"T HEARD ZUKO SAY HONOR ONCE THIS ENTIRE SEASON
He says it. One time. Which is about as many times as he says 'Uncle!'
It's like they knew he had to say those two things, so they made him say each once to get it out of the way.
RIGHT
So what does he call iroh?@@PedroBenolielBonito
@@theredandblueyakuzahe mostly doesn't. And he especially doesn't in THAT WAY. You know, with THAT inflection? Not even once.
The one time he does say it, he pauses right before, as if saying 'are you ready, people? Here it comes!' You can hear the ellipses. It's really cheesy lol
It was a complaint about the show forever is Zuko talking about his honor, kinda like how Katara talked about her mother every. Time.
Talking about it and dealing with the trauma after some time with progression makes up for the flaws of the original
Bro i hate that zuko didn't say the word HONOUR throughout the entire live action while it was like his only line in the original show
I missed that so much 😤
It was replaced by the word GLORY which changes the story more than the writers think.
Omg I literally waited and it never came :(
my HONOR!!!!
oh my gosh he never says it?!?!?
WHY IS GRAN GRAN NARRATING THE ENTIRE HISTORY? HOW DOES SHE KNOW AANG IS THE AVATAR?
Exactly...their logic is If she's old = she knows everything thts going on ,and she straight up tells the audience 😂😂😂
Grandma ex machina
Okay but Alex.... You HAVE to watch the OG animated show. It's phenomenal. You don't need to do an episode on it, but you should watch it for yourself.
Yup, that actually made me drop my jaw, that he never actually watched it!
I took a long time to sit down and watch it in order, too, but still.
Then again he watches so much for the channel, and if he knows he's never gonna make a video about it...
@@BixLovesMiley i get that for sure. But considering his fondness for animation and the quality of the show it for sure belongs on his watch list
This 100%
yes he needs to watch it before he continues this live action cause it would spoil it for him
I can't help but notice they didn't make any of the characters black or gay.. apparently it's only okay to do that when the characters were originally white?
@@VinnyUnionsounds bad out of context 😂
@@lmnop29 it sure does. Either way I dislike changes that abbreviate wrongfully from the original source.
For instance in the show Aang had his tongue "frozen" while he was playing with the water tribe kids and it wouldn't had harmed to include a scene like that exactly like in the original material. It doesn't has to be a 1:1 replica motion to motion, at the very least it could've added these details. Actually, I'm not even inclined to call "details" because it was a literal scene. To Netflix:"get'cho shit together."
the original show has had an excellent writer. sad, he didn’t work on Korra with them
In the original, they already knew he was the avatar, and they told him when he was 12 despite his mentor wanting him to have a childhood first. Thats literally what made everything else in the story possible
Don't read my name.
they also gave him his appa whistle strait away rather then him getting it at the market place
Uh okay so
@@VraerynDaDragonespecially considering it’s been a century. It would just be folklore at that point, he could be any airbender. Netflix made it a generic superhero show lol

I thought it was just me that noticed 😅
You have no idea how much I agree with the costuming. Like, they look like costumes rather than actual clothes.
It seemed like they actually got more pristine as the show went on, like they swapped in new sets that weren’t worn in at all lmao
@@vonsowards1297 i agree, some things should just be animated, it's better that way
Especially since they look at least for the ice nation cheap and flimsy they don't look like something that would keep someone warm, get some hide not perfectly dyed blue.
@@AyeleyokiedokieSame I just thought Sokka was younger but got taller because he is growing into a man after all he certainly doesn’t act older.
The anime movie I'm referring to; *Harmony*
Disclaimer: very disturbing. Viewer's discretion.
I love how simplistically people look at this stuff. Like small tribal cultures have the luxury of letting their women die in combat. Sorry folks but when you have a small population each woman is ten or twenty times more important for the survival of said tribe.
the character growth was great :(
I like that he said “Cosplayers” because some of the characters ABSOLUTELY are cosplayers picked up at a convention by the casting director. 😂
Like Sokka, i can't see the guy as a real version of Sokka, just a cosplayer

That clip of Sokka and Katara from the animated series was so refreshing. It reminded me of how good the dialogue is in the original and made me realize how truly awful it is in the Netflix adaptation. Even though the voice acting is exaggerated because it's a cartoon, it still sounds way more like real conversation between actual siblings.
i wouldn't even say it's that exaggerated lol, sokka just has personality there lmao
EXACTLYYY!

-Inferiority complex with Zuko

-Needs to be stopped by Mai and Ty Lee
In the original, we are promised a much more scary villain.

In the animated show when aang was told he was the new avatar he was alienated by the other kids and was told he would have to leave his home in order to train. That being "special" wasnt cracking up to what it sounded like. Like imagine telling a child he has to move away from all his friends.
maybe the live action didn't communicate that aspect as well as it could have lol
@UncleTom854-bm5lv Agreed. They should have just made a whole new story. But considering the current state of the entertainment industry, that probably would have been worse than Legend of Korra; and I liked Korra despite its downsides.
They also insinuated that he will be separated from his father figure, and in a way alienated from all he knows and loves.
OG show is phenomenal!
One of my biggest critiques with the Netflix version is Aang never actually waterbends. Or tries to. That makes no sense.
Let's not forget him suddenly water bending when the avatar state kicked in was _the_ signal to everyone about what he was when he didn't tell them. Because no one else can do that.
Lol literally Book 1 is water.
Didn’t watch the live action yet, but if Aang never or didn’t tried to waterbend yet, Netflix miss the point unless they are doing it over multiple seasons.
In the animated, Aang at least tried to waterbend with Katara’s teaching and even tried to firebend in 1 episode.
No it's overrated
My guess is that season 2 will begin with them staying in the north for a whole year learning water bending, which will explain the kid growing up and why they removed learning water bending from season 1

Since Ang (i forgot how to spell) had to sever his ties to the mortal world to go into tge avatar state, cab he fly?
After he's told he's the Avatar, he asks "Can't I just keep pretending to be your friend?", which is exactly what every friendship in this show feels like, pretend. The friendship- and character development of the original show are *chef's kiss**😙👌
When I heard that line I was immediately reminded of Man of Steel. When Clark says "can I still pretend Im your son?" And Jonathan replies the same way, "You are my son." 😅
Pretend in what way
Also I feel we all knew how special Gyatso and Aangs relationship was through the small flashbacks in the animation.

The main issues is they cut roku moment when he told Aang that he needs to master 4 element before the summer end because sozin's comet will arrive at that time. Without it, the live action loses the purpose of the story. Because of it, Aang never really trying to study waterbanding. We need season 1 studying waterbanding, season 2 studying earthbanding, and finally studying firebanding. All of this is because Aang must defeat Ozai before the comet comes at the end of summer, and LA didn't do it
They did this in case the LA show got cancelled. So they made s1 about saving northern tribe from invasion when the only reason they went there in animation was to get a water bending master. Its crazy, because they are all supposed to be so inexperienced even by end of s1. As Sokka does nothing but guard Yue, Katara gets better and proved her self to Pakku and Aang gets angry and becomes that ocean spirit. They all still have so much to learn. That's a good point about the cleanness of the clothes. In live action, it looks much better when it's lived in. Not a costume. This actually explain why I think cosplay sometimes feels off too. Because it's often too clean.

***Spoiler*** he does not say it for the WHOLE season.
What they did with Bumi and Avatar Roku _infuriates me._
And yet I can't get THAT mad at the WHOLE show cause there ARE really good elements.
Average.
The Roku Slander was High
It also makes sense for Roku to appear because he was the avatar directly before Aang so why would he be skipped as asking the avatar directly before you for help makes more sense and be used as your guide
Avatar Rokku helped Aang realize that the fire nation is not evil, their rulers are. With their relation sacrificed to the gods of equality and inclusion, the show loses a lot.
Bumi was ruined indeed. Crashed in 1 second instantlt staying who he is... Also being annoying and overplayed. I hated him in Netflix series! 😢
From the third episode forward it was a complete nightmare. Nothing made sense at all
It's so ironic that they made all the characters into the ember island players characters 😂
But the effects are decent and like zuko said they do get worse every year

I felt like I was watching kids on a playground reenacting their favorite show during recess 😆 The costumes are super nice, the special effects and all that are well done, love the CGI like how great the Sky Temple and Appa look and all that, but.. the acting.. 😬 I'm sad about it. Was really looking forward to this but it's too cringy to watch.
At least in the Ember Island Players Katara has some defining character traits.
omg nooo XDD now that i think of it...
Same!! I never grew up on it but I watched it all finally over the past few years and OMG IT IS SO GOOD????
usually i HATE kids anime's. but ATLA does a fantastic job of threading kids cartoon with plot and story that i can't help loving it
My issue was the dialogue.
I thought I was da only one that was thinking this I was like wha??
Like we know it and good writing takes building but I’m tired of all the exposes n shit
Yes! They kept repeating things over and over, like we are dumb. I don't need every character announcing their motivations to me, let me figure that out myself. The animated show treated its audience more like adults than the live action.
And they want to make it for the mature audience. Smh
@@RahulSingh-zo7sm they failed at most parts cause it wasn’t giving “mature”
Live action adaptations is Hollywood copying someone else's homework. They just either change the words a little or gut the whole thing and just keep the title and character names. The original of any work will always be the definitive version.

@Luke-ow9ku right, it's about Hollywood taking established IP and trying to milk more money out of it instead of trying to make something creative

Honestly I keep saying Sakka has a flinstones necklace and it throws me off everytime I see it

I hope we as people now realize some things need to stay animated. The writers leaving the live action makes so much sense now
Don't read my name.
Those same showrunners* were behind the 2010 movie. Whats that say about the showrunners if this live action was good?
To be fair we can still just watch the animated TV show. It's on DVD and Netflix in full season right now. I personally am not against having live action things, but I do agree that there are some things that don't need to be live action. This show probably being one of them. However there's really nothing stopping me from appreciating the animated show over the live action TV series
I was so hopeful. I was like "yeah they definitely wouldn't have made the character's as intersting as sand paper. They wouldn't get rid of Sokka's misogyny, and the characters would surely have meaningful interactions. Surely that's not too hard to ask for"
The creators left because they wanted to change the story and Netflix said no. It’s a perfectly inoffensive/gorgeously made adaptation.
My biggest complaint are the endless exposition dumbs. The writers of this show haven't heard about the "show, don't tell" rule I guess.
This is so annoying, they literally treat viewers as dumber than the original target audience for the cartoon.
It was way worse in percy i already know everything jackson.
I guess its better than the text scroll exposition in the beginning of the 2010 movie. idk

Especially Ang happily running around in the south pole in super crispy clean ironed monk clothes not freezing at all

Oh yeah.

Where is the Agni Kai??? Why is the cave of lovers already being shown? I’m confused about some elements and people from book 2 showing up in book one. It sort of feels like they are trying to put as much as possible in the show because of the possibility of being cancelled.

I think it’s wrong to show the fate of the Airbenders at the beginning. It ruins the shock of finding out what happened to them later. 😢
I heard this show is aiming for the game of thrones crowd 😅
@@13CrystalHeart Yeah but the OG series trusted its audience and didn't spoon-feed them, that's good writing. And even if they wanted to lead with the genocide, I feel like it should have been restructured in a way where the whole episode focuses on Aang's life before he was crystalized or whatever happened to him in the iceberg. I just feel like there's a better way to do it than how they went about it

8:22 gran gran wasn't supposed to lore dump on aang like that though 😂😂
That's why they were supposed to explore and learn that on their own that ruins the rest of the season because now I'm gonna be only interested in the action parts
Yeah it took away form Aang being sent into the avatar state upon seeing the dead air benders. It also removes one of my favorite aspects of Katara which is her maternal nature. She calmed downs aang in the air temple like someone would their spouse or child. In the la i didn’t feel it at all.
I know right? there was sooo much exposition in the live action.
Animated Gran Gran: nobody's seen an airbender in 100 years.

Avatar state, yip yip!
I think the problem has to do with them thinking they can fix the OG series, which is a fundamental misunderstanding of the source material
U can't fix what isn't broken. Primary rule. Every adaptation thinks they can make a classic even better by their own ideologies and agendas. We know what is the result of that, besides One Piece. Katara character is again victim of woke brigade, similarly Aang and Sokka too
The soul doesn't exist.
They cut Sokka's character arch out because he was slightly sexist at the start of the show, which he overcomes rather early on and grows to respect everyone he works with and becomes a strong leader type by the end. It's the most basic fundamental of his character and they just cut it because they thought it would be "problematic."
The more they spoke about how they kept changing stuff, the more I knew this show would be a bust.
@@parthachem83Katara's character has always been woke, One of the main arcs of the first book is she fighting sexism in the water tribe.
Thank you!!!! And here he accepts it by the end of episode 1... So cheap.
Everything was so rushed 😭
They made Azula an insecure kid... People ask to wait bc there's more to develop, but this isn't Azula. She was always more capable than Zuko and always more manipulative. I can't see this Azula conquering Ba Sing See at all

@@RK-cj4oc okay? Netflix trying not to exposition dump every single scene in this show
If there are 2 characters that I do feel genuinely benefitted from this show, it'd be Zuko and Iroh.
Iroh's "sins" certainly weren't lost on the viewers
I watched some hyper-left twitch streamer's reaction to the show and ever time Iroh came up, he'd just call him a war criminal and a predator (for hugging jin)
@@USBYDProductions It wasn't lost on the viewers. But the show never actually tried to call him out on it either. Iroh never faced further consequences beyond the death of his son.
