I was privileged to see Buddy live on three occasions. As He was leaving the stage during one of the performances I was seated at the end of the row. We were all standing and applauding. When He reached where I was standing, I shouted out to Him. You're the best Buddy! He looked up at me, smiled and said " Thanks Man."
As a working Drummer it was the thrill of my lifetime. He was the absolute best that ever was.

He had effortless chops and talent but I would MUCH rather listen to either of the joe Jones’s, art Blakey, billy cobham or tony Williams. To me BR was a machine gun chips one trick pony. Only ever played big band and the tunes always had people taking turns soloing which I find to be redundant and boring.

I have to agree and it's very hard to pick one artist over another and say this cat is the greatest and so on.....with Art Tatum it's commonly acknowledged that he was simply the most amazing and most accomplished pianist of all and as far as drummers are concerned I really do feel that whether or not he's my favorite drummer (much of the time he is not my top favorite cat to listen to but is always a top favorite) I still can say without hesitation that Buddy Rich was the greatest drummer of all time, without a doubt. He didn't just play faster and cleaner and more precise than anyone, he also had brilliant ears and a creative flow of his ideas and it was the way he put the rudiments together in making his musical statements with fills, solos and embellishing arrangements. His timing, phrasing and touch was impeccable and his whole approach to the instrument and his technique was mesmerizing. He's also on several of the greatest jazz records ever made including the Lester Young Trio record with Nat King Cole and Buddy, as well as the first Bird with Strings and Tatum, Hampton, Rich plus one of the all-time best recordings Bud Powell ever made which was the session that produced "Tea For Two" and Hallelujah for Verve in 1950.
I don't think anyone will ever really know how he was able to do what he could do night after night and get stronger, faster and better as he reached 70 years old. A true genius.

I wish I could of seen him perform in person. He is absolutely amazing and one of the best drummers the world has ever seen. My dad worked with him in the 60's but they clashed because Buddy tried to take control over my dads band for rehearsals and my dad had to put him in check. He definitely respected Buddy's talent and the perfectionist he was but it sounded like Buddy could be a bit overbearing. When your musical genius like Buddy though it's easy to see how he could be like that. His mind was going a 1000 miles a second.

Buddy was the Winston Churchill of perfect political percussion (if there is such a thing) Buddy was the "Beat" in the Beatles. And certainly the "Joy" in enjoyment of music. Thank you, Buddy Rich. You made this world a better place.. . . . thank you

I love the modern day drummer who needs 2 kick drums, 12 toms, 16 cymbals, fibre glass tips and 4 apps to tune and position them. Then I see Buddy who turns up with half a kit and a couple of sticks and blows the socks off anyone before or since! Even Steve Gadd doesn't come close. Genius.

Not one of the greatest drummers. The best greatest drummer of all time. no drummer comes close comparing anybody else to Buddy Rich is I compare ice cream to horse manure. He also was Mr Cool a true gentleman and perfectionist

I had the pleasure of seeing Boots Randolph, Chet Atkins, and Floyd Cramer as a youth in the early 70s. Ponderosa Park, Salem, Ohio. Too damned bad Buddy wasn't part of that show. Legend.

I don't care what anyone says....Buddy was the best drummer who ever lived...in my opinion. His trad grip stick technique has never been matched.
I would love to know what his cymbal set up was, especially the ride.

not to take away from drummers today but; when this Man solo'd, it felt like a drum solo... not an elongated fill. modern drummers fill that 1 two thee 4 extra... but never felt like the drums are on their own. I'm drunk, hope this makes sense.
