  • The Joker is one of DC and WB's most popular and most profitable comic book villains of all time, and he has had several great incarnations on the big screen AND the small screen.
    But how do his live action incarnations compare to each other. How do Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix's versions of the Joker compare to each other?

    Man, I'm starting to think that the 2020s is the decade of DC, especially with the impact of DC Fandome. I'm a fan of both Marvel and DC and I'll still watch the Phase 4 movies, but DC is starting to branch out with their films and I'm glad they're picking up the slack from a hit or miss decade in the 2010s. And, to be honest, the only Marvel films I'm truly hyped about is the next big crossover film, especially with rumors going around about the Russo brothers possibly directing a Secret Wars movie.

      I don’t know... Their last movies even if they sounded good were terrible. Man of Steel and Batman v Superman are one of the worst movies I’ve seen. Justice League was a mess, Sucide Squad was a joke, Wonder Woman was okay in the first two acts then the third one wasn’t that good (in my opinion I know a lot of people loved that movie), Aquaman was alright, enjoyable but nothing to get hyped about, and Shazam was probably much better than I remember (circumstances of when I saw it weren’t the best) so I guess that one is okay. But compared to the last movies of the MCU these one don’t live up to that. Ofc Joker was an amazing movie but it isn’t even part of the DCU.

    Jack Nicholson's Joker was great for what it was. Yeah, he's kinda just being himself, but that's the beauty of it. Jack Nicholson is naturally the Joker, probably more so than anyone else. Of course the movie itself was very cartoony compared to The Dark Knight and Joker, so it doesn't feel entirely fare to compare his performance to Heath Ledgers or Joaquin Phoenix's performances. He was supposed to be a cartoony Joker. His performance would surely be different if he was acting in a more realistic Batman movie.
    But overall I agree with this video. Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoeanix are both amazing, but in Joker we don't get to see as much Joker as we see Arthur Fleck. That makes Heath Ledgers performance still the ultimate Joker portrayal.

      Fear, humor and style
      Humor goes to jack as he's honestly the most out of the bunch who forego it for the other 2
      Style goes to Joaquin as his style of the joker was very unseen in most media while still maintaining the feel
      Fear obviously goes to heath, watching him in the dark knight alone gives me chills

    Even though I love all the realistic takes on these comic book characters, for me I sorta prefer a bit of unrealism in some comic book movies. Films like the Christopher Reeves Superman, the Sam Rami SpiderMan, or Tim Burton’s Batman are perfect examples of that. Even though there ARE some realism in these movies, I liked how they try to go for some of the over the top stuff comics are known for. Still I love all versions of the joker. Minus Suicide Squad.

    16:59 I agree with you so much. Your words reminded me of one Halloween during my middle school years where I desperately wanted to cosplay as Jack Nicholson's Joker but my dad directly [and even the online costume stores (indirectly)] said that no one remembers that character anymore, especially when regarding Heath Ledger's Joker and I got extremely upset at the time. In retrospect, his Joker was more comparable to a fad than an enduring performance. And it doesn't help that even during the 1980s, everyone still remembers villains like Darth Vader, Palpatine, and even Nicholson's Jack Torrance more than the Joker.
    I agree with Confused Matthew in his "Batman" (1989) review when he said that if they got Robin Williams, there would have been an engaging performance than an actor showing off their ego.

    Personally I really like Nicholson's for being goofier and without a plan. Joker can be anything from a joke that is trying to steal from a bank with a jack-in-a-box to the most evil character ever, and I think the "darker" Joker's lose that complexity.

    Been waiting for this video for so long! I watched Batman 1989 before Joker, and Nicholson (like the movie) was...fine, but not memorable. IMO, for an “Agent of Chaos”, Heath Ledger’s plans rely on coincidence way too often, creating holes in that movie. Still, his is the best, because as fantastic as Phoenix was, he was simply a guy with a laugh “disorder” who spiraled into villainy because of a social outrage we get ham-fisted explanations for at best (of COURSE the first guys he killed were Wall Street brokers who just happened to know “Send in the Clowns”!). “Joker” lacks subtlety, which is a shame, but to its credit it’s left ambiguous enough. Not sure I needed to see Thomas and Martha Wayne’s deaths AGAIN, with the pearls flying in the air...
    Yeah, excellent video, man! I loved it, and agree with your Joker ranking. I personally wouldn’t give TDK or Joker a 10/10 because I think they’re both a bit overrated, as much as I love the former, and admire many aspects of the latter. Joker is well-acted, has great production values, has an unreliable narrator, and is not needlessly violent, but takes advantage of the R rating; however, it’s a miserable film, more than I even anticipated for one centered on this character, and as mentioned, there’s a lack of subtlety that keeps it from standing the test of time as one of the best comic book movies ever (or what have you). Keep up the great work!

    When you actually think about it Joker saved Gotham City in The Dark Knight. All of his actions basically killed crime in Gotham and in The Dark Knight Rises Gotham became good. I am not saying he is a hero because he still did horrible things but I am saying his intention was to save the corrupt city

    • @AndrewDoom
      @AndrewDoom 3 роки тому

      My head canon for him is that he’s an ex special ops soldier that went MIA and after being held hostage, eventually escaped and came back to a country that had forgotten him

    • @SEWATEROLIUM
      @SEWATEROLIUM 3 роки тому

      The hell? His intentions were to show corruption in the system but only to expose it not to solve it. He did so not because of a sense of justice or benevolent motives but just for his own sake. If Joker would have won, organized crime wouldn't disappear it would centralize with him. Gotham would be treating corruption for anarchy and that's not a positive outcome

    • @penguinmilkshake6257
      @penguinmilkshake6257 3 роки тому

      Jon Jonz my point is to say that he is trying to save Gotham’s crime by doing horrible actions and presenting his joker persona to trick everyone into falling for what he wants. I am not saying he is good in fact I do see your point by the outcome but I will say that he is the reason why Gotham’s crime is gone in “The Dark Knight Rises”. Also I do respect your opinion

    Jack Nicholson’s joker was the most accurate
    He was random and unpredictable he had the smile the laugh and the iconic gear and the look
    In this video you perfectly describe why jack was the most accurate joker but then disregard it, a lot of the time joker is unpredictable and does stuff for no reason and jack nailed that, he does what he does because he can he doesn’t need or want motive he just does he really doesn’t want anything but to see the world burn

    With the two newer jokers, the purpose is on the surface, it's easy to see why they do what they do, both for their own reasons and what outside forces have affect them.
    With 1989 joker, you have to dig deeper to find the reasons and purpose of his actions.

    Jack is my favorite live action Joker because of the randomness, I always loved Random Joker! You’ll never know what he’ll do next and that’s the scary part about him and very enjoyable. I feel an extreme bias ness towards him because we’ve had “better” performances. Batman 1989 is my favorite Batman film, Keatons Batman and Bruce Wayne, Nicolson’s Joker, The story, the music, the action, I love it all! That along with Returns and Forever are my 3 favorites. I get hate for enjoying those three more than the Dark Knight trilogy as films and characters. It’s not nostalgia either, I saw the 90’s trilogy after the Dark Knight Trilogy and within the past 8 years I grew to enjoy them more and more. I got to rewatch Batman 1989 in the theater for the 30th anniversary and it was such a good time! I was the only teen in the theater, everyone else was an adult or older! It was such a great feeling to watch this Classic in the film in the theater. I didn’t get to see Returns or forever and I wish I was able to! Hopefully sometime in the future

    I am really interested to see what Barry Keoghan does with the character.
    I thoroughly agree with everything you've said, but it must be remembered that Nicholson's Joker had the most acreage to travel. In 1989, _Batman_ was advertised as a realistic take on Batman (and the Joker) as opposed to the only other live action Batman, which was, of course, Adam West's slapstick spoof. Cesar Romero's Joker, interestingly, was not even as threatening as Frank Gorshin's Riddler. (Oddly, it was Gorshin's mannerisms and over-the-top laugh that did it; watch the very first two episodes of the TV to get this gist. Riddler's girlfriend (played by Jill St. John) even dies by falling into the Batcomputer. This was the very darkest the show ever was and it was never allowed to get this dark again.)
    Today, Burton's take is seen a nonrealistic, but in 1989, with Richard Donner's Superman and the West TV series in the chronological background, Burton Batman was considered downright realistic rather than fantastical.
