Happy memories of Exeter from the mid 80s. We used to travel down from Hull on a summer Saturday, get the first class 50 to Exeter Central, race across the footbridge and catch a return Class 50 almost immediately back to St. David's. Got a few for haulage that way
A bygone era of train travel now very much missed!! It wasnt very long after you took this that the 50's fell out of favour with InterCity and got replaced by 47's on the inter-regionals to and from the North. Its hard to belive that nowadays, those services are now a 4 or 5 car voyager with a trolley service if you're lucky! Thanks for posting this great video! So enjoyable to watch.
Wonderful vid, certainly brought my memories back to life, especially seing how all the loco hauled trains were much longer back in the day. Also the trains to Liverpool which i was on many times in the 70s as we holidayed with relatives there in my childhood
Yes I remember being at Torquay one Saturday and seeing 2 Merrymaker trips leave, one for Leeds and one for Norwich I believe...Both hauled by class 45s.....fantastic days.....my train back to reading was 50 hauled and stopped all stations to Exeter then Taunton and Reading......Many thanks for watching....Mark
remember those pacer things in that livery , only time as a little spotter i went on one was from Dawlish into Exeter for a days spotting whilst on holiday . Think we went onto Westbury that day to try and catch the 59s, it would have been in 85 or 6 !!! great video, brings back good memories
Many thanks for putting a name to the announcer, all info is valuable and most welcome Angie.....regards to you and your Dad (Deceased) and I do hope this video is a form of fond memories of him.....Mark
It certainly is fond memories of my dad Alfie Edmunds it is here for the future for my children and my grandchildren and even my great grandchildren so they can listen to his voice. I think it’s brilliant and I’m glad I found it. ❤❤😊
Great video, and certainly brings back memories. At that time Surbiton was my nearest mainline station. Loved watching the 33s and 50s on the Exeter services. What a come down today's services are for the intercity cross country services. I counted 11 coaches on at least one train, today it can be just a single 4-car 220. Also, Liverpool sadly no longer has any direct cross country services, and apart from local services and Avanti to Euston, it's just TPE services and an EMR service from Norwich.
Good job the 31 only had four Cement tanks, anything else would have been a bit of a challenge 🤭. Nice hear some good clear sounds of Pacers with the original TL11 engines. Class 47 somewhat in the minority today then? 😬
Many thanks Andrei....Class 31 may have made 5 tanks !.....There were 2 class 47's 47609 and 47620... but a haven for the 50 fan. Much appreciated.....Mark
A great film bringing back many memories and reminding us just how boring todays railways are. I’ve taken some screenshots of some of the staff featured. Would it be ok if I post them (credited to you) on our staff website so they could be identified?
