1mz is NOT a heavier engine. IT is the lightest of all 3 options. You are thinking of the 3vz.
A 1mz can be mated up to the s54 box and all you need to do is change the stock diff. This sheds 100+kg from the rear whilst giving you a bit more power than the stock turbo.

The 3sgte has more potential to do what? Make more power with a smaller powerband? Have more lag? Be heavier? Create more heat and plumbing issues? Any turbo engine will have more potential to make power than a NA engine but people who do NA swaps do it because they want simplicity and power everywhere. That is why LS swaps are so popular. The 2GR has far more displacement than other NA engine that will fit without major fabrication in this engine bay. The result? Smooth effortless power from idle to redline.

Throttle issue can be solved by making a custom rubber banding device. basically a bungie chord that goes from pedal to the wall above your knee. This adds more resistance, which electric pedals have very little of.
For high end power, I would suggest different cams and a supercharger.

Proving once again that an engine swap is never just an engine swap. Gotta redo all the supporting stuff too, maybe even see if you can do some basic aero at the front to help fix that lift...

Liked the video! But at the end you said that the 2GRFE lacks potential... Tell that to my 2GR Turbo and Dave's 800+whp 2GR as well as the 600+ spider he built.
Heaps of potential in the motor if you have the $$$ but for cheaper power the 5SGTE or K-Swap is a good idea.

    • @SnowWhiteMR2

Yeah with enough effort and money anything is possible, and ultimately it is a larger displacement engine. Its more about at what point is it actually worth it to you. Good points, and thanks for watching!!

The 2GR is used in the lotus. Just supercharge it, and tune and it’ll put out decent power and retain decent reliability. Of course the higher you push it the less reliable it’ll get and then you’ll have to spend more money making sure it won’t blow at high boost.

I've hated driving the 2GR since 2006 when my parents picked up a Rav4. Part of it is the dynamics of the car, but it felt so eager and you just had to be so gently with throttle input. Hopping out of pretty much anything else it takes a bit to recalibrate to its throttle. Only similar thing I can think of is a late 2000 Nissan Altima. Every time I push on the brakes I lurch forward. I don't know, everything just feels wrong unless it's the only car you drive. 2GR does feel good in an MR2 though. Strangely my time with an auto MR2 made me appreciate some of the slower aspects of driving. It was still hell for an on-ramp that was up hill, but 0-30 was excellent which is kind of the bulk of day-to-day life. I think you really nailed it with the Caldina idea as the best of all worlds. I am watching the 2AR stuff with a lot of interest though.

Nice video with up front impressions of the 2GR swap driving impressions. You brought up points other reviews do not mention--as the other reviews are too glowing. The power band, electronic throttle, and true hp output is something nobody mentions. Possible better keeping the turbo, do an exhaust and tune and will be at or more power with the ability to do more a stronger internals. The 2GR has a much sweeter exhaust than the turbo. This video deserves a like.

The sw20 was never very stable at high speeds. I remember getting up to over 110mph racing a del sol and the steering felt so light I didn't really feel much in control.
I think the aerodynamics were never properly tested and optimised for high speeds. The car shape generates lift rather than downforce at high speeds IMHO.

The design does not seem to choke it either AND it has a lighter flywheel so I would bet on the factory ECU tune being the main culprit seeing as it came out of a Rav 4 rather than say, a SE camry or Es300 + restrictive exhaust. Sounds like it's mated to the stock exhaust so it's prob getting choked up top while low-mid range gets a bit of a boost from that.
