AT LAST! A real artist who helps, doesn't just sell books or make us feel bad because our beloved little trees are dying due to our lack of experience and knowledge. Thank you, a million times! :)
I just bought my first bonsai tree. And this is the first video. I didn’t realize all the stuff you have to buy for them. Hopefully it will survive. I’ll keep watching.
Very clear instructions. I enjoy your presentations very much. I have found that when people do not check their tree roots for many years, the growth of the roots expels the soil out of the pot. This of course is a very slow process and will not be noticed by the inexperienced bonsai-st. I have re-potted trees that had not been touched in 20 years. As a result they were pot bound with very little if any soil. The trees of course were very stressed. I was very worried they would die from what I had to do and warned the owner of the trees before I began work on them. Thankfully all the trees have really became stimulated. The only exception is a small Juniper tree. It survived the pruning, but it is not doing very well. I expect if may not make it as it has many dead leaves. Not sure if I may be able to re stimulate any fresh growth on the juniper.
Thanks for the bonsai wisdom usually not found in books. All my roots seem to grow counter-clockwise. Is this because I live the northern hemisphere? Would the roots of a tree imported from Australia get confused?
Thank you so much this is so helpful! Also I would like to ask you, how do I know my Bonsai has rotten roots or irreversible damage to them? Thank you!
I lost one of my oldest bald cypress this year and as I lost that one followed my dawn redwood. both very special to me and had for many years. come to find out they died I think from root rot. the big bald cypress had a white fungus growing on some of the bigger roots. I had notice even the entire root would break up and dissolve. I'm baffled. the only thing that changed is I moved and brought it with me. but I think those types of signs were root rot. don't neglect your plants pay attention to any little change. I had never had this happen so I notice the signs to late. I learned but confused. anyways good day I hope you find your answer. Matthew
For most trees you can see root rot, only when you are repotting the tree and remove the old soil. Trees such as Jade, if the root tor is bad, it will affect the surface roots and if corrective action is not taken, then the trunk starts to rot and the trees eventually dies. If there is root rot, the tree will show signs of stress and unhealthy appearance, That is the the time to repot it and sort the roots out.
A few hints on whether your bonsai has root rot are: the could smell rotten, the compost might be water logged another way to check would be to take the tree out of the pot and the root structure falls apart (meaning it's not strong enough to hold together). If the roots have rotted that’s it for the tree!
I NEED HELP. I got my jupiter bonsai tree 3 days ago. The soil is 40% peat moss, 30% dune sand, 15% perlite and 15% bark dust. I have been researching saying peat moss holds moisture which isn't ideal for bonsai. Sould i change my soil? Or leave him alone until next early spring? I checked no signs of root rot at all.
Is bonsai about beautiful trees or about concentrating, about mindfullness etc..About gaining confidence in your own a¡bility to design, to have and trust in your vision?
I have repotted My mame japanese maple today, the soil was permanently wet so I had to check for root rot (which didn't see to be the problem). Didn't cut any root but changed some of the soil... could you comment please? any special after care? thank you.
I have bought two overwatered junipers in unsuitable (not well draining) substrate. They are curling and beginning to yellow. Should I re-pot straight away (end of august, temperate zone), or will that just add stress and I should put the existing rootball in some draining material in a bigger pot until early spring?
Hello there, I've just moved one of my Chinese elms into a bigger pot, and used coconut soil, is coconut soil ok to use? I know this time of year soil takes alittle longer to dry out but since I've watered the soil is still quite moist and it's been just over 3 days now. Is this normal for the soil I'm using? Appreciate any help Jr
Yeah great you tube video’s.. On the back of these vids I drove a round trip of 120 miles to buy a small tree from Heron.. For £100 I get a condescending lecture from a snotty impatient gardener (I clearly wasn’t spending enough) and I take home a tree that ends up nearly falling out of its pot because it hadn’t been secured with wire.. Told me it was 8 years old but when I repotted to secure it the tree had no roots at all.. I guess the apprentice prepared this one
Between the annoying ringing and the drunken Camera, I need a drink. Too bad because the content was sooo good and informative, but the filming and sound was not.
I put a slow release fertilizer in my bonsai for repotting I have been doing this for years and know many others who do the same and have great results, thats just my opinion please research anything before doing!
Excellent information but a pretty terrible video. It shows more than anything that I need 15 years rather than 15 minutes to appreciate and absorb all this.

It's cool to watch one of your older videos and see how much your video quality has improved over the years.
Peter is the clear example of wisdom and experience. Thank you for the valuable knowledge :)
You are a fantastic Bonsai "Professor" and I thoroughly enjoy your lessons and your stories! Thank you so much for sharing your vast knowledge.
I repotted my Japanese maple and this video gave me alot of confidence in doing it😅
I need to repot my Acer, so glad I found this!
I transplanted a baby creeping juniper bonsai. My question if you know, I’m wondering if I should not water it after transplant?
Very good, lots of info in just 15 min.
Nigel Saunders nice to see you haha
Hi Nigel, what do you think of him not washing off all the soil before repotting?
Nigel saunders you dont practice this. You always wash roots. And spread the the roots
Many, many thanks. I am starting out on the jouney of Bonsai owning and growing. What you have taught me here will be put to good use. Again thankyu.

Finally realised what you meant after I fell off my chair.

Like everyone else great video, but the beeping was a little troublesome.
That tree is incredible!
Thank you for your advice about fertilizer and repotting.
Hi Peter, Good video and packed with useful info.
Thanks for the bonsai wisdom usually not found in books. All my roots seem to grow counter-clockwise. Is this because I live the northern hemisphere? Would the roots of a tree imported from Australia get confused?
Thank you for sharing ❤
So you need to repot the tree into a bigger pot? What if you want to keep it in the same pot but trim more roots and branches off?
Great demonstration. Alright already Herons.....every 30 seconds.
I love this man 🙌🏼
Please get rid of the back ground noise, radio!!!! Great information.
awesome video! very informative
Do you have any tips about the roots of pot bound, non bonsai trees from nurseries?
I transplanted a baby creeping juniper bonsai. My question if you know, I’m wondering if I should not water it after transplant?

Thank you so much this is so helpful! Also I would like to ask you, how do I know my Bonsai has rotten roots or irreversible damage to them?

Easy reduce the height and plant in a bonsai pot. To keep it small pull the new shoots out. I have a video on my channel, I hope it is helpful.

The acid was stronggg.
I thought I was having a brain aneurysm with the warping video.
Turn off the phone! Otherwise a great video

I love your videos, but you might want to take the phone off the ringer as it is distracting to what you are trying to teach.

Interesting. Peter has indian accent.
Master Chan, I admire your patience with the idiot and his ringing telephone. Some folks just have no manners at all.
I'm pretty sure that's the business's phone.
Somebody throw that phone in the toilet!!!
I feel like I’m at sea
Oh no. I cannot watch this video. I am only 1:38 into the thing and i already have a headache with all of the shapes changing form. Goodbye.

Horrible video. The video kept swaying back and forth. Made me dizzy to watch it.
What is going on with this video? 🤕

The pop up half screen ads, the rocking backgrounds, the greenhouse ambient noise are an insurmountable annoyance. Beam me outta here Scotty!
