- The 400-year-old Styrian Armoury is the largest historic armory in the world,Built back in 1642, the Styrian Armoury in Graz, Austria, is the world’s largest historic armory.
It contains approximately 32,000 specimens of arms and military equipment, which is enough to equip an army of around 5,000 men.Graz was the center of defense during the Turkish Wars, between the 15th century and the 18th century.
Styria was on the front line of almost continuous conflict with the Ottoman Empire and with rebels in Hungary.
In order to defend itself, massive armies were organized in a very short time, and they needed equipment. The Styrian Armoury was built from 1642-1645
Looking back with nostalgia from my two trips toAustria, I toured the armory and spent 7 hours in two shifts in there. Just couldn't leave. Iwas surprised by the size of a lot of the armor panoplies because we are all told that men were much shorter in the 1500's compared to now. Maybe so on average, but there were many pieces that were sized for men of significant stature at 6 feet tall. There was one full suit for a soldier who stood 6' 7". Many breast plates had evidence of battle marks from enemy (Turkish, I assume) musket balls. Ironically, the armor of a rich customer would sometimes have a test bullet fired at it over the heart, with the dent left intact rather than hammered out - in order to show the strength to the customer.
