The Hussar regiments were originally a Hungarian creation. The hairstyle was one that began with their creation, but as the Hussar became a popular light cavalry entity, they got rid of the long locks as they were an impediment to close combat. Most cavalry regiments,both light and heavy, chose a Roman style of haircut.
