    From one dad to another, thanks for posting these videos. I enjoy air travel, though economy might suck, but it's still an amazing experience and a privilege to be flown by professionals like you.

    At around 13:45 there's what looks like a massive shark just over your instrument panel. And it's keeping up with the plane right until you second last turn for the final approach 45 seconds later 😮

    • @AfricanHut
      @AfricanHut Місяць тому

      doubt it would be a shark for 2 reasons.
      1. The plane never passes over it during that time. Either it is the the planes shadow casting ( hence the position never changes) or the shark is swimming at about 300km/h.
      2. From that height , that would be about a 20m long shark.
      I would go with the plane's shadow since the thought of a 20 meter long shark that can swim at 300km/h would be frightening.

    What was shown as Somerset West was actually the Strand. Somerset west is to the left on the video.

    Very nice video, thank you. If I may suggest , the cockpit camera does not add much to the video as we cannot see the instruments. Perhaps you could position the camera to look directly at the flight display? Additionally, it would be very informative if you could patch the second camera audio into the radio to record the tower air traffic. Thanks again for the video, I landed there many times in the distant past.

      Thank you very much for your feedback. I am constantly experimenting with camera positioning, so any suggestion is more than welcome. I will try this out - cheers!

    Surprised to see CRT displays, I had thought they were all replaced. Thanks for the video. By the way, I’m a happy customer of your airline - flown dozens of times from USA to Asia. It’s good to see a cockpit video.

    • @PapaPadde
      @PapaPadde  6 місяців тому +2

      Many thanks for your comment and I am surely thankful that you are a satisfied customer! Always welcome! :-)
      As far as I know, there was a retrofit to replace the CRTs available but it was originally planned to put the A340-300 out of service and replace it with newer aircraft much earlier than they are planning to do now.
      So my guess is that it was just not worth the cost.
      There are TFTs in the A340-600 and A330 but the A340-300s that we a have still have the classic CRTs.

      Thanks for the feedback!
      I agree that would be a nice addition but I do not want to use more technical gadgets than the camera, so I have to sacrifice sound quality. Sorry!

    Great video, superb landing, love the long approach over the coast. North west was blowing, rainy day. Is this the A340 operated by Lufthansa, or the SAA one being brought out of retirement? Oh and ofcourse, my home city!

    I am curious to know what communication systems FAJO - Johannesburg Oceanic uses, do they use ACARS and CPDLC exclusively, ADS-C? Or do they still use HF radio, have not heard them on my HF radio in quite a while.

    • @PapaPadde
      @PapaPadde  2 місяці тому

      I am not sure about that area as we normally do not get to fly in that area and can only assume that they - like in similar areas - like Shanwick, Gander, Santa Maria and so on - are using the same equipment and means of communication which normally are CPDLC, ADS.B and HF radio as back-up. The latter is still being used if CPDLC or any data conncection of the aircraft fails.
