I watched this because I just had family photos taken and I wondered why I didn't like the B&W versions the photographer included when in my wedding album, they were some of my favorites. This explained perfectly.
I love this video! You don’t just tell us what you did…but explain your thought process behind everything you do and that is so helpful! I have two questions: 1. When you deliver your galleries, do you include both the color and black and white or just the black and white? 2. Can you do (or have you done) a video on how you know when to use specific lenses and apertures? I feel like I still struggle know what lens would be best outside of needing specific focal lengths for the size of the room, etc. I only have prime lenses and shoot mostly families and seniors and some newborns. I like to shoot wide open but sometimes struggle with not getting everyone in focus. Any tips you can provide would be so appreciated.
Hi Katelyn my first time giving you a comment, although I’ve been following you for some time and enjoy all your videos. I even bought the R6 and enjoying the quality it delivers. My only thing I would add to switching B/W is when reviewing photo’s I noticed the colors look way off or the sharpness is off but the picture and its worthy of saving over deleting. God bless all you do to share your work experience and real photography struggles. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great video on how to make the decision if a photograph can be on B&W or not. I Usually struggle to create a B&W photograph for a wedding gallery then adding it to an album that has almost all of the remaining photographs in color. I feel like i have to either make a full album spread in B&W or none.
Good advice, thank you. Where emotion is absent, or seemingly absent, say with landscapes or pet photography, would you still apply these 'rules' or perhaps something other???
I didn’t realize black and whites can go against any style. I guess i sort of see them all the same….but ill be sure to studying them more now!! And i 100% agree with the use of it for emotional moments. It makes such a huge difference!! Sometimes color is really distracting. Thanks for sharing!!!
Question for Katelyn- I have the Preset Process & often click B & W in LR and then make changes using the Preset process - can you explain how this is different? Thank you!!
I have the Leica Q2 Monochrom and you need hardly any editing if you take your time with the camera settings. It takes amazing B&W compared to switching from colour.
I'm very excited on this Wednesday... After your reply that this process is compatible with ACR I made the purchase today. I'm so excited... I'm sorry 😆 I said that already. I didn't see install for ACR. Going to try your same method as LRC.
No need to buy presets - so easy to create the looks you want in almost any image editing program - and once you get the look you like you can create your own preset for future use.
Right! You totally can! Just like you can just put a camera on manual and start trying out stuff and learn how to use it, right?! Anyone can do it... but some need some help and appreciate the guidance.
@@KatelynJames I don’t see how someone using presets created by someone else elevates their own skill or knowledge - in fact, seems like it can work in the opposite direction - why bother learning the craft when you can just purchase someone else’s process and superimpose it on your own images. In my view, guidance is better served by teaching the process of editing rather than how to use pre-packaged shortcuts created by someone else.
No one is forcing you to buy them. A lot of people buy presets, tweak them to their liking, and then save a version of that preset to use. For a lot of people, starting from scratch and learning everything that goes into a preset can be overwhelming. They might prefer to buy a preset from a photographer they admire (ahem, KJ) and then ask questions later.
@@alyssamakeseverything I agree - people are certainly free to do what they want - but I don’t think using someone else’s work to substitute for your own actually does anything to increase your own skill level. It would be like me trying to teach you calculus by doing the problems for you and just letting you then take credit for the answers.
@@Edwin1947D I have over 6,000 people in a manual editing course for Lightroom, I get what you're saying ..and I also know there is room for both. You stick with manual editing and we'll keep doing our thing! Also, do some research about the preset process, it's not what you're describing: shop.katelynjames.com/shop/the-kj-preset-process-product/
Can I ask a question?? not related to your above video. Are you by any chance left handed? you talk with your left hand very dominant..sorry I know totally irrelevant but I was just curious as I was watching this video?
I watched this because I just had family photos taken and I wondered why I didn't like the B&W versions the photographer included when in my wedding album, they were some of my favorites. This explained perfectly.
Glad it helped you understand better!
A really great video - and for me, these thoughts can be applied to much photography. Really useful and insightful. Thank you for sharing.
Halfway into this video and I’ve already learned so much! Thank you Katelyn!
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!

Really great video! I did this subconsciously but now I can properly explain it when asked! Thank you for helping! You rock!
Glad it was helpful thanks for watching!
I love your videos, and I also love B&W fotos!
Thanks so much 😊
B&W has always scared me. Maybe I should try it, your point about enhancing emotions is quite convincing! Thanks for the tips!
Glad it was helpful!
I bought the preset process & B&W package this morning! I'm so excited to put it to work!
Wonderful!
This is really good advice! I always struggled to know when to use b&w but now I know!
Glad it was helpful!!
Awesome lessons. I was always wondering about the best judgments for b/w. A very BIG help!
Glad it was helpful!

thanks for the video. I never thought about the emotional photo or extracting colors before.
Thanks for watching Teresa!
I also use b and w to help with emotions!
Totally agree!!

I think then it may come to personal preference. I am not an expert in those fields. Thanks for watching!

Black and white 😍😍 emotions, good light, the meaning of the picture, ... That's how I choose to edit an image in B&W.
Thanks for watching!
I tend to use black and white for historical buildings or if there is a threatening sky during a landscape shot.
Thanks for watching and sharing!
Question for Katelyn- I have the Preset Process & often click B & W in LR and then make changes using the Preset process - can you explain how this is different? Thank you!!
For color distractions, do you ever consider doing a color replacement?
No sometimes I just desaturate!
Awesome thanks KJ 🙏
Thanks for watching!
This is very helpful to me. Thank you!

Interesting! Thanks for sharing!
Any program that I can use to edit photos ? Please answer me
Lightroom!
Thank you 😊
I am 100% a color photographer. If someone specifically asked to PAY ME for b&w, I'd convert it. But my particular style is 100% color!
Interesting! Thanks for sharing!
Any chance these LR presets could also be used in ACR?
Yes they can!

Also, what camera do you use to make these videos?
The Canon C70!
Yes! I definitely agree with making an emotional image BW, and using BW to hide an Easter egg 😂
Haha yes!!
I don't like muddy B&W images. I like high contrast images for B&W.
Thanks for watching and thanks for sharing!
In answer to your question, I say “never”. When I first started in photography, almost 80 years ago, black and white was all I had.
Thanks for sharing Lawrence and thanks for watching!

Enjoyable but a bit too heavy sell on your product
Fair enough! Thanks for watching!
Enjoyed some older videos, but this was 30% product sponsorship. 3:30 minutes before you discuss your actual topic. 🥴
