      P. Chretien, Yeah, we have been lied to most of our lives I'm finding out. The Russian people are not any different than those in the USA. We all want the same thing, a good life for ourselves and family.Look at Lars, speaks Russian, English, and Danish, maybe more.........a real dummy that guy! Heck, I can't even speak English as well as he does and I was born here!

I have four down filled pillows from 1955 that were part of a Civil Defense hospital cache put down by the US government during the Cold War. They made good equipment back then, you have a good bag. Also, Mrs. Survival Russia can breathe all she wants, anyone who complains should try not breathing whilst watching a 10-20 minute video.

We camped for a few years with that same bag. On the West Coast US they were actually too warm to use as intended. In Yosemite Park, in the higher country, I woke up to a Brown Bear nose. I guess he was giving a good sniff into the bag to see what it had inside. What ever feathers they used had an attached odor. The bag is durable and I've used one in a Northern Temperate forest. In my area Army and Navy surplus stores have disappeared. I found one but his prices are astronomical and there isn't much gear. I was lucky enough to retain a 12 ft square canvas Army tarp. It is suited for long time deployment, excellent as a ground cover.
Enjoying your channel and the recommendations. Best wishes.

Watching you use that giant "Spam" key to open the container brought back various memories: I cut my fingers more than once opening a real spam container and I had to roll carefully and evenly or the key would wind to one side and quit working. Also, the metal tape had a way of breaking at some point before opening was completed. I used pliers more than once to finish opening the metal tape. Modern pull-tab closures are easier to use to open cans.

That's one hell of a find, these are excellent sleeping bags. The only issue I've ever had with them is the wet weather, so invest in a cover for it if you haven't one already. Keep the zipper lubed and waxed, hang dry every season. Man, that thing was vacuum packed all this time...excellent!

  • @Robert31352

I have the cold weather bag as well as the wool WWII and Korean War sleeping bags , including their bivy bags. They all have emergency egress zippers. With WWII and Korean War bags, just pull on either side of the bag at the zipper tab and in a ripping motion, it will come unzipped. You received a nice bag. It does not get any better than new out of the can, lol.

Lars, I spent màny nights in those bags...one hint: tie a square knot in those straps at the foot of the bag, as close to the bag as possible...that keeps you from tearing them out of the seam when you roll up the bag and tie it up to carry....tearing out the seam is quite easy to do by the way.

3:40 hey...I used to be a professional photographer and ENG cameraman during my mis-spent youth in Toronto, Canada. I actually LIKE your better half's camera work. I was also told I had good instinct by our TV instructor at Ryerson University...Madame has the touch, too.....one could learn all about matching action, compressing time, the 90 degree rule, shooting "cutaways" that can save your heinie later, multiple repetitions of acts and paragraphs shot at different angles, spend hours studying old Sergei Eisenstein movies .......HOWEVER, I say, HOWEVER adding that type complexity would overwhelm the innate simplicity of your style which I admire...plus you'd be spending hours editing it all together, instead of spending time with the Ninja and your little Commando....

I love that sleeping bag! My grandpa was retired US Army and he had one like that and it was a down feather sleeping bag. We called it the mummy bag. When we were kids we would crawl inside it and curl up into a ball sideways and roll each other around and then the person inside the sleeping bag had to try to unroll it and escape on their own. We had a lot of fun playing with that old thing and it did have a funky odor!! 💕💕💕👍

Way back when I had one of the U.S. Army's Down Arctic Bags. (Much like the one you are showing.) (Mine might still be in my Parents Loft.)
Rub some Soap on the Zipper and it will work a lot better.
The Grommets are for attaching a Bivy Bag or Cover on the Bag.
The Cords on the end are indeed for Tieing the Bag when you roll it up. (They will fit through a couple of slots in the end of the Bivy Bag.)
I slept comfortably in this bag down to around 10°F or around -12°C. (That was without a liner or clothing other than Wool Socks.)

I'm so glad you did the bit at the end regarding the emergency exit feature. I was going to ask you to include a clear shot of the instruction label on your next video because that part of the instructions was never clear in any of this video. I slept in one of these that belonged to my uncle when I was about 13 or 14 years old (1968) and it was almost too warm for late fall in Kentucky. It's good to know that I could have escaped if I found a rattler sharing it with me in the middle of the night. :-) Love your vids and Mrs. S. Russia should just ignore those A holes that complain because she has to breathe.

Sealed 'Spam can' sleeping bags fetch $250-300 here in the USA! Something worthy of note on actual Spam: only 'Original' is 100% pork, the low fat, low sodium, and all the flavored versions contain chicken too. They have a much shorter shelf life and taste funky too, IMHO. I'm a connoisseur and only buy the real deal: Original Spam. :)

I have a Korean era Emergency Evacuation Sleeping Bag. They are prized gear if you can find one. Lots of room, quality Down. I spent the better part of winter camping last year smoothing it with that bag. Usually the evac bags have additional zippers so Med can get to wounds with out removing patient from the bag. Zippers down the back and zipper access to the legs. Two straps on each side so four guys can carry the wounded inside.

I had one in the 90's. The full kit had a liner (mine was made of muslin) which helped to keep you from looking like a chicken wen you crawled out. It also had a canvas cover that was laced into those grommets alongside the zipper. Sadly, they wear out from all the feathers that escape.

I would wash it by hand in a tub with cold water and a Woolite like product. That will remove the dust and allow the down to fully fluff up.

why would you need to clean for dust if it was in a vacuum sealed bag and vacuum sealed metal container from the factory?

Because he found dust upon opening. It is likely crushed down from the vacuum packaging and age.

Nice hiss.... thanks, that was a great insight into something that I never expected to see or even knew about. Quality alright made to last. Unlike many a modern product.

I own two of those. They are good for Average to Small People. So I'm thinking Mrs. Survival Russia just got a new Bag! There is also a Canvas Bivy Sack that goes with it. No Waterproofing, more to keep Dirt and Dust and Sparks from the Fire hurting it. Hope this helps. Thanks again and Take Care.

The infamous green maggot, British pattern 58 down filled bag (feather mites and all) was very similar, with an added waterproof ground layer/bottom. People developed allergies to the feathers or was it the mites. Either way, it was a good day when the MoD brought out the replacement. The Sleeping System. Now that was a good sleeping bag, gortex bivi and roll map combination.

Amazing, the bag is exactly one year younger than me but it looks in better condition. The quick release on the zip is a great idea, how many times in the past I have had a 'stand to' in the middle of the night and had a real struggle to get the zip undone on my bag.
One thing is for sure, you will never get that back in the can!

I have that same bag (Mountain bag, not sure if it's M1949 or not) along with the cover. It was a gift from my older brother (he was US Army at the time) in the early 60's. Good stuff.
