Agustin Barrios - Variations on a theme of Tarrega

I was surprised to find out that this fine set of variations wasn't uploaded yet on youtube! So... here it is!
It was composed by Barrios in Guatemala in 1939. The theme is the well known student work "Lagrima". This set of variations is one of his most mature compositions, reflecting a lifetime of devotion and a thorough mastery of the instrument he loved. It is played wonderfully by the great Dutch guitarist and musician Enno Voorhorst.

Barrios was a genius out of his own time in his home land of Paraguay where back in the days classical music was not entirely appreciated. That was perhaps the main reason why he never returned to his country. He died in El Salvador where he is considered like a monument to the classical guitar.

I've never heard of this before. I remember learning Lagrima as a kid but never heard Barrios' variations. Amazing musician and great sounding instrument. Does anyone out there in guitar world know who made his guitar? Hauser? Ramirez?

Allan Wells if I remember correctly Enno Voorhorst (the guitarist in the video) usually uses a copy of a guitar made by the Spanish luthier Francisco Simplicio.

I've always enjoyed playing the Tarrega original as it's very easy to play yet very effective. But I didn't know about these amazing variations until now. Now I need to get hold of the sheet music to see how much I'm able to play.
